ED 2 In-depth analysis (Or me overanalyzing anime鈥檚 decision in everything and long post again yes, I just got so much thoughts, sorry for making you read a lot, but anyway I hope you enjoy)
I just want to point out 3 things that I鈥檝e noticed in this ED
1.The turning into the light
In the first part we see montages of Loid, Anya, Yor, Bond, Yuri and Fiona with the light shining on all of them. However, it was only Loid, Anya, Yor, Bond and Yuri who were facing the light. See the difference in these?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fiona seems like she doesn鈥檛 care to turn into the light source, she had her back turned into it and her eyes closed. And even though Yuri was facing the light it was only half his face that was lit, he wasn鈥檛 completely turning his head to it. Meanwhile it was Bond, Yor, Loid and Anya who turned their heads and faced the light directly, illuminating their whole face (even though we didn鈥檛 see Yor it鈥檚 evident she glanced straight into the light source)
We all know that light, generally speaking, represents warmth and happiness which the people shown in the montage never get to experience because of the tragedies they face, Loid and Fiona (because of the war and traumatic experiences that led them to being spies) Yor and Yuri (The loss of parents at their young age) Anya and Bond (Because they were experimented on)
However, the Forgers, despite being formed in the foundations of lies, secrets and deception, found that warmth with each other. The light shines full on them because they are the ones who experience that light the most since they became a family. Fiona has her back turned into the light because she wasn鈥檛 accepting that what the Forgers have is real while Yuri is still hesitant to accept her sister鈥檚 newfound family as her new source of familial warmth.
In addition, I found the symbolism of the light in the allegory of the cave quite similar. The prisoners in that cave are chained, they are unable to move, and so do the characters in this montage. Something鈥檚 holding them in seizing the light but the Forgers were the only ones who stepped out of the shadows to follow the light. The light represents self-discovery and enlightenment and each of the Forger family experiences that the more they spend time with each other. Yuri hasn鈥檛 had that kind of self-reflection (But in the manga he鈥檚 slowly starting to, thankfully) while Fiona seems like she isn鈥檛 interested in that.
2.The Sitting and Standing
I therefore conclude that WIT and Cloverworks hates Fiona more than the manga does. They just kept on emphasizing how much of an outsider she is in this family in this ED馃槀.
I noticed that in this turning around the house scenario, in this one Yor is sitting in the chair while chatting with Yuri. Both are sitting on the chair.
Tumblr media
Then let鈥檚 skip first to Franky and Anya, they were also both on the chair while talking to each other.
Tumblr media
Both of these duos are within each other鈥檚 eye level while they are talking to each other and both seem to have mutual understanding and are genuinely having fun.
Then let鈥檚 go back to Loid talking with Fiona, and notice how, even with that open chair in front of him, he was not sitting with her at the table. He is also standing just like his wife in the background. They weren鈥檛 on eye level indicating the standing one as the superior between the two of them.
Tumblr media
Clearly, this emphasizes that Fiona is a mere junior colleague in Loid鈥檚 eyes and will never be someone he could have a mutual understanding with. (Anime is really putting Fiona in her place馃槀)
3.The Colors of the Clothes
This is the one that inspired me to revisit this ED because the decision about the color of the clothes bugs me the first time I saw the ED. Why does Yor wear blue in here?
Tumblr media
I know that we鈥檝e seen Yor wear blue in the anime but we鈥檝e never seen this particular outfit in this color in the series. So why choose to dress her in blue here?
It鈥檚 because it鈥檚 connected to that chair analysis I recently posted. The one sitting in the designer chair featured in the volume and the one sitting in the same chair聽in the comedic inside cover have mutual understanding of each other the most. Like in Volume 1, Anya is sitting in Loid鈥檚 chair, Volume 2, Yor is in Anya鈥檚 chair, and in Volume 3, Loid sits in Yor鈥檚 chair. I've explained it in detail here. And they are exactly in the same arrangement in this ED but it鈥檚 their clothes that match the color of the eyes of the one who pays attention to them the most.
Anya鈥檚 eyes matches Loid鈥檚 green sweater
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anya is fond of spies like Loid and she thinks he鈥檚 the coolest, Anya often read his thoughts more compared to any other characters in the series.
Yor鈥檚 eyes matches Anya鈥檚 red dress
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yor is the one who often looks after Anya and the one who keeps her safe most of the time
And the last, Loid鈥檚 eyes matches Yor鈥檚 blue top
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yor caught Loid's attention when they first met and he only has his eyes set on her, not on any other woman because for him she鈥檚 the only fitting to be Anya鈥檚 mom and of course, his wife and no one could ever replace her in that role.
They were also in the same color scheme when Yor wore something blue in Episode 10.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even if the secrets they have kept them hidden in the dark from time to time, they know they聽 would always have a light to go home to that is just on the other side of the door and I think that鈥檚 a wonderful subtle representation of their relationship in this ED.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Addition: I wonder what these two dorks are talking about before heading to bed. They sure do love talking with each other don鈥檛 they? Maybe sharing a room could help them lengthen their late night conversations as long as they want right? I don鈥檛 know, just a suggestion.
This post longer turned longer than I've intended, I planned to talk about the color of the clothes only. Sorry I have no self control. But do let me know if you think analysis makes sense.

Have you seem the English translation of the new SxF opening?!
Well, apparently I鈥檝e discovered that I like these yawn filled days and turn them into movies.
I鈥檝e found the secret and trick to it under the sky where we don鈥檛 get along.
I closed my heart and locked it, that鈥檚 how I managed to live my life, and the melodies now overlap.
I wanted a sign no matter how small, that I could actually find better than a streetlight.
I put a ribbon on each of the sights that my eyes picked out. I collect them like souvenirs as I continue down this path home.
The seasons each say hello, and I shed a few tears as I go. Where should I begin to talk about this way home that you鈥檝e given me?
I walk and walk and sometimes rush on my way to see you.
I run and run, wait, no, I should still walk on my way to see you.
If the visuals are from Loid鈥檚 perspective then the lyrics would be too right?!

SxF 96 Analysis: Some Small Details About the Reveal
Ok, hear me out. I haven't even read the manga for Spy x Family (yet); I've only watched seasons 1 and 2 of the anime, but I've somehow stumbled upon spoilers for the last two chapters (ch. 95 and ch. 96), and other small bits here and there.
And since I am not totally caught up on the story, I hesitate to call this a proper analysis since I'm mostly going off of what I know from the anime at this point. But!
I've been following the chatter and excitement following chapter 96 and I just wanted to throw this quick analysis out there, since I haven't seen some of these details mentioned yet.
So, I'm going to focus on this particular moment, just for what it is. Down the line, after catching up and having all of the character and story details, I might revisit this scene again with additional insight.
Of course, I'm sure we've all seen this panel at this point.
Tumblr media
At first glance, this panel is beautifully drawn. You can tell that it was drawn with a lot of care and attention to detail. Typically, such manga panels are used to emphasize the fact that this is an important moment for these characters and/or the story.
There are even bits of confetti(?) flying around them, reminiscent of cherry blossom petals; this is another known technique used in manga to indicate the emotional importance of a scene for the characters featured.
That all feels pretty obvious, I'm sure. But I also wanted to point out other small details given here, which could potentially add another layer to this scene for folks.
I've seen a lot of discussion around how Anya's admission here is a big deal (and it is). But I haven't seen anyone mention the small detail here that she whispers, "I can read people's minds."
I believe that is also why we see that speech bubble transparently -- to visually show us the softness of her voice in that moment (in addition to representing Anya's willingness to be transparent about herself).
However, let's consider the conversation up until this moment. Right before, Damian had jokingly asked her, "How did you know about my dog and the pond, anyway? What, did you read my mind or something?!"
Of course, he was not expecting Anya to say, "Yes". But it's not the fact that Anya said, "Yes" that makes this scene impactful. Anya could have easily said the exact same words, at normal volume, with a smirk on her face, and nobody would think twice about it. Damian would have immediately understood that she was teasing him. And anyone overhearing their conversation would have thought the exact same thing.
But that isn't what happened. Because Anya was serious in that moment. With a genuine expression on her face, she says, "Yes" and then she whispers her secret to him.
And that is what shocks Damian. That is what causes him to freeze.
In that moment, he's able to sense her sincerity and hear the truth in her words.
His gut reaction is to believe her, whether it's because it's Anya or because of how she said it. It isn't until he has a second to think and his brain kicks into gear that he starts to notice the disparity between what he knows to be true and what Anya is telling him. In a split second, he questions this, and then ultimately rejects the notion that she could be telling the truth.
Why?
The obvious answer would be that what she's told him does not line up with what he knows to be true of reality. The rational and logical part of his brain overrides his heart and his gut, ultimately recognizing this disparity and forcing him to reject Anya's claims.
However, they are at a young enough age that it wouldn't be uncommon to easily believe in "impossible" things like magic or superpowers. So, there's also a chance that it goes a bit deeper than this.
Perhaps this sudden display of sincerity and truth from Anya didn't line up with her typical behavior with him. He's not used to seeing that side of her, and as a result, his mind resorts to him thinking that she's lying to him. He thinks that she's just teasing him. Not only because that's what he expects from her, but also because the only other alternative would be for him to admit that they've just shared a true moment of openness and transparency between them.
Anya's whisper implies, "this is only for you to know." As a defense mechanism, Damian's brain decided that it was more likely that Anya was teasing him than it was that she was being vulnerable with him in that way.
Tumblr media
Another detail from this moment stems from the fact that this reveal takes place while they are dancing together. Partner dancing is an activity that requires cooperation and teamwork. At first, we see Damian and Anya struggle with getting the hang of it, but eventually they start working together.
That, in itself, seems to be a fairly good representation of their relationship with each other. However, even more so, it follows the flow of their conversation in this moment. It isn't until they start cooperating that they start to open up to one another.
And the pinnacle of the conversation -- the reveal -- happens at the exact moment when Damian dips her. Not only does this make for a picturesque panel, but it is also a symbolic visual of what's happening.
Dipping your dance partner inherently requires a level of trust. The person being dipped has to literally put themselves in their partner's hands. Depending on the dip, they are giving up varying levels of control and safety over to their partner. They have to trust that their partner won't drop them, or bring them too close to the floor; they have to give up their balance and trust that their partner can hold the weight that they're giving up. And their partner takes on the responsibility and burden of that person's trust (as well as trusting that the person that they're dipping does not throw themselves around carelessly).
And here, in this scene, despite the bickering we see Anya and Damian do, we see that there is at least that small amount of trust between them. Anya trusts Damian to dip her, and Damian trusts Anya to be dipped.
But underneath the surface level, the fact that Anya whispers her secret to Damian while he's dipping her reinforces the idea that she trusts him with that knowledge. In that moment, she gave up some of her own control and safety, and placed it in Damian's hands. Only his. Her whisper implies, "this is only for you to know." And he's been given the responsibility and burden of deciding whether to hold it, or drop it.

I can't believe we've reached the season finale! 馃槶 First off, the key visual for this episode is too adorable and is only reminding me how much I'm going to miss my favorite (fake) family! 鉂わ笍
Tumblr media
While the early season episode where Bond and Twilight go on a mission together hints at how much compassion Twilight has for Bond, this episode really highlights what a softie he can be when he's around someone with whom he doesn't have to put on any acts.
Tumblr media
Not only does he risk his life to go after Bond in the fire, but when he finds out that Bond went into the burning building to save another dog, he gives that soft, sincere smile that's only reserved for when one of his family members does something that truly touches him.
Tumblr media
Rather than be annoyed with Bond for putting both their lives in danger, he's happy that he would risk his life to protect others...because that's what he does all the time! Plus, when he thinks Bond is acting out by "attacking" random people, instead of getting mad, he puts it upon himself to try and understand Bond better, the same as he does with Anya.
Tumblr media
It's also really adorable how much Bond wants to please Loid. Is he learning from Anya?
Tumblr media
This guy has to be one of the dumbest arsonist to stick around the building he just burned down with a hat that says "Fire" 馃槀
Tumblr media
And of course, wet Bond and "trying not to laugh" Twilight are finally animated! Twilight is lucky that Yor and Anya weren't there to catch him snickering like that...the embarrassment may have killed him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we get the pinnacle of how much Twilight cares for Bond when he tells him that he should think of himself as a family member first and guard dog second, plus how heartbroken "someone" would be if anything happened to him. And that sentiment is really a driving theme in the series, not just in this case with Bond, but for Twilight and Yor too. They're always putting the happiness of others before their own, without either knowing that the other is doing it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't think they would use this story as the season finale, since it only featured Twilight and Bond, and Franky a bit in the beginning. But they made it feel more like a finale by adding new scenes of the other characters! The scenes with Anya and Yor doing origami was cute - I love how Yor went too hard with the scissors 馃槄
Tumblr media
And the ending where Anya gives both Twilight and Bond stellas was a great addition (though maybe a bit canon-altering since Anya in the manga hasn't seen soaked Bond up to this point).
Tumblr media
The montage of all the other characters at the end was nice as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I laughed at Fiona's target practice 馃ぃ
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the final scene with the Forgers having dinner was the perfect last shot~
Tumblr media
No announcement for season 3 yet, but the episode does hint that there will be more! There's a SxF event in Japan in June 2024 where they could make such an announcement. I'm hoping season 3 won't start until 2025 in order to give the manga time for new content - as of the end of season 2, 67% of the manga has been adapted into the anime (according to my story guide spreadsheet), which is a lot. We'll see! But there will definitely be more SxF anime in the future, perhaps even another movie! So for now, only SxF Sundays twice a month will have to tide us over 馃槃

SPY X FAMILY SEASON 2 (EP. 5)
More stuff on the garden because it very much deserves to be talked about and appreciated!
While there's a lot going on visually, our attention was directed to two plants in particular: the Erica flowers and the winged spindle tree.
Tumblr media
Erica flowers, also known as heath or heather, are blooms of many colors that are commonly associated with good luck and protection. They're also symbols of love and even of familial affection, with pink and purple flowers being associated with feelings of passion and romance and of admiration and beauty, respectively.
Tumblr media
While I can't find much in terms of symbolism on the winged spindle tree, a quick search showed me that it's also called "burning bush" due to the red hue of its leaves and it reminded me of this story about the prophet Moses and how God appeared to him in a burning bush. During this interaction, God tasked Moses with the mission of leading his people away from a life of persecution and slavery into a life of freedom and prosperity.
But in the context of SPYxFAMILY, what could they mean?
I think the winged spindle tree represented Yor's mission during the Cruise Arc: she was chosen by Shopkeeper to protect Olka and her son as they attempted to escape the clutches of the Ostanian underworld to live a life of peace in a neutral country. On the other hand, the Erica flowers represented Yor's ever-growing feelings for her family. To me, her noticing these flowers first reflected how, during the mission, a lot of her focus was on thoughts of her family being on the Princess Lorelei. Shopkeeper pointing out the winged spindle tree corresponded to his and McMahon's efforts to get Yor to focus on and to prioritize her mission. Which, to Yor's credit, she does try very hard to do. But this parting shot of the Erica flowers hinted at how, despite her efforts, the Forgers would always be on the back of her mind.
Tumblr media
A less focused but still very prominent element of the Garden scene are the leaves. Like, okay, obviously they're everywhere since it's a literal garden. But I do think these leaves鈥攊n particular, the falling leaves and the ones being pruned off by Shopkeeper鈥攕ay something about Garden and its approach to the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where there is life, there is also death, and a garden is not exempt from this. To me, the leaves are symbolic of people and their removal from their tree/shrub/bush is symbolic of death. Where the falling leaves are the people who are lost due to accidents and natural causes (i.e., forces of the world that cannot be controlled), the pruned leaves are the deliberate deaths. In the world of SXF, these are the targets or "customers" Shopkeeper and his assistants tend to so that they can maintain the beauty of this world.
What I find interesting is that despite Yor being a rose in our eyes, Shopkeeper might very well see her as just another leaf. A loyal and reliable leaf, but still a leaf. And as long as the shears are in his hands, she's a leaf that could just as easily be pruned if he decides it's necessary.

About Psychiatry stuff in SPYxFAMILY. Part 1
Part 2 here / Part 3 here / Part 4 here
I'm a dumb and I just realized that ch. 29 of the manga will be animated, since Fiona appears for the 1st time in that chapter and she's in the key visual for the 2nd cour.
I'm aware this isn't the first analysis made on this chapter but so far I haven't seen anyone from the Psy world speaking about this. I'm a Clinical Psychologist grounded on Freudian-Lacanian Psychoanalitic theory and I think I can share some knowledge over several aspects of Psychiatry that are depicted in the manga. I've worked with Psychiatrists in the past, albeit for a short amount of time, in a public healthcare institution, so I have a notion of what Psychiatrists do in a public setting like a Hospital.
If there's a Psychiatrist out there who wants to refute this analysis, PLEASE DO SO. I'm more than pleased to learn and have a nice debate.
This is one of the most hilarious chapters in the whole SxF series, so if you don't want the fun to be spoiled, please skip this post!
Let's begin. 1. Working in a Hospital
Tumblr media
I'm not sure if this is universal, as healthcare systems around the world differ in several aspects, but the consensus is that a Hospital, which is a public healthcare institution, is specialized in the treatment of the most complex diseases.
In Psychiatry, this usually means dealing with psychosis, drug intoxication, major depressive episodes with suicide attempts and serious personality disorders. Most of these conditions require hospitalization, as the risk of giving just ambulatory care is not enough to guarantee the patient's safety or that of the others's.
There are Hospitals that provide ambulatory care though. Again, it varies from where in the world you are. In my country (Chile) you usually go to the Hospital when your life is at risk, but if you are suffering from a less serious condition (for example, dealing with panic attacks), you'll be transferred to a primary healthcare institution. Unless you live in a rural area.
Indeed, working in a healthcare institution means gaining access to any patient's clinical record. But for the objective of Operation Strix, and Loid being a Psychiatrist, I don't think that's of much use, for reasons that I'll cover in Point 3.
2. Specialty in Psychiatry
Tumblr media
Psychiatry has several subspecialties, like any other healthcare career. You have Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Adult Psychiatry (I believe these two are mandatory to become a Psychiatrist but I can't say it for sure), Addictions, Forensics, Emergencies... Loid said that he wants to help people affected by the war, veterans specially, so it's a polite guess to say that he's an Adult Psychiatrist. Then again, we have this panel:
Tumblr media
The sand box is a diagnostic tool used for children. It's mostly used by Psychologists, as they have more time per session to analyze it. I'll cover the sand box in more detail in Part 4 of this series of analysis, but for now let's say that analyzing it consumes a lot of time that Psychiatrists, in a Hospital, usually don't have.
This panel suggests that Loid has worked with children before as a Psychiatrist, and we see him later in chapter 67 with a child (although it's not clear if the child is his patient), so here are another 2 polite guesses:
-Loid's a General Psychiatrist -Berlint General Hospital's Psychiatric Ward is understaffed and they put their Psychiatrists to do whatever is needed at the moment, regardless of their specialties. It sure doesn't look that poor of a Hospital to me, but who knows... My bet is option 1. Poor guy.
3. Donovan Desmond as a potential psychiatric patient
Tumblr media
In the first chapter of the manga, Donovan is described as a hikikomori, meaning someone who withdraws from social interaction. This word also describes a psychopathological condition of japanese young lads that spend months, even years, holled up in their homes without interacting with anybody aside from their families (if they have). The word itself doesn't have a pathological connotation tough. In English, the closest concept to "hikikomori" as a psychpathological meaning would be Autism, which isn't equivalent at all. And, when a person is so reclused, we tend to pair it with paranoia, as it often leads to social withdrawal as well. The important thing here is, as you probably are thinking right now, the reason fo such decision. And this reason is always given by the symptoms. Paranoia is a type of psychosis in which a person suffers from delirium and hallucinations related to being endangered or threatened by something. Of course, a proof of reality is useless for these patients, as their perception of reality itself is disturbed. An UFO is watching over you at all times? I can't precisely prove that it's false, as I lack proof of the very existence of UFO, and even if I have it, the delirium would probably shift to attack me as I turn into a conspirator against the patient's truth.
Not that we clinicians waste time trying to do so, though. In these cases, the Psychiatrist kicks in and administers a dose of antipsychotic drugs. Psychotic paranoia often needs hospitalization and a strong compromise from the patient's family to constantly supervise him/her. After that, comes a long process of social rehab. A very characteristic feat of paranoid people is that THEY NEVER SEEK FOR PROFESSIONAL MENTAL HEALTH CARE HELP BY THEMSELVES. Paranoids often arrive to a Psychiatric Emergency Room dragged by a third party due to bizarre behaviour, self-aggression and/or attempts to hurt others.
There are people that is not psychotic and suffer from this kind of fear of pretty much everything as well, but it's hard to determine if they really aren't psychotics, as their reasons to recluse themselves strongly resemble a delirium. The key that helps to discern if it's a psychotic paranoia or not is finding the hole in which a patient allows himself to doubt. In paranoid psychosis there's absolute certainty, while in neurosis there is room for doubt.
These "neurotic paranoids", as we'll call them for now (it doesn't exist as a nosograhical entity anywhere; please don't waste your time looking it up in the DSM xD), tend to abandon therapy pretty soon, as they fight for sticking with their motives to recluse themselves. They don't want to realize what drive them to behave like that. Patients suffering from obsessions will probably act this way, as well as some hypochondriac and anorexic patients. Bear in mind that this is not a norm; everything depends on the symptoms.
All of this begs the question: Would Donovan Desmond ever need Psychiatric help from Dr. Loid Forger?
His interaction with Loid in chapter 38 suggests that he's not reclusive for a mental condition, but he does have a certain level of "neurotic paranoia", as he can't bring himself to really trust any other person much. If nobody is truly sympathetic to each other, they could pose a threat at any moment, right? Since he's clearly not psychotic, because he can hold an interaction with Loid in the same shared reality (not a dellirium, I mean), one can safely assume that he does trust someone, at least one single person. When a psychotic person suffers from paranoia, there's not a single hole in their life that is not filled with suspicions of others being dangerous. This isn't the case for Donovan.
We see him walking with a lot of guards, so he must trusts them. And he seems to be closer to Demetrius as he goes with him to the Imperial Scholar get-togethers, so that also counts. He even takes a detour to meet Damian. Seems like he can trust his family members, and that alone could be a measure of love, albeit in a really weird scale.
Tumblr media
Tsundere? That aside, given the social status of the Desmonds, if they ever need psychiatric help, they probably would consult a private clinic instead of going to a public hospital. Unless they find themselves in a reeeeaaaally desperate situation. So, the answer is no... for the most part. Good try, though, Twilight.
I'll cover more stuff in the next part. This one turned out unexpectedly long. It's been fun ruining the fun for those who don't know about mental health though.
