Debut (Part 1)
On their journeys to find their Shadow Masters and complete their debut, the Living Dolls Qinghua and Shen Yuan cross paths and decide to cooperate for a time, but it seems both have their own concerns regarding the debut.......
(transcript of dialogue below)
SHEN YUAN: (marching forward determinedly) Master Shen is waiting!!!
QINGHUA: (following behind with a bemused expression) ...You know, I've been wondering this for a while, but... Could it be, you... Actually, really get along with your shadow?
SHEN YUAN: (turns back to look at QINGHUA, puzzled) Well, doesn't everyone?
QINGHUA: (turning a sardonic smile to the ground) ...You're kidding, right? My Master... I have no idea what he's even thinking. He doesn't speak to me. He never even gave me a name. (His expression turns resentful.) I don't know if he even cares about passing the debut or not. He certainly doesn't care about me.
(SHEN YUAN stares at QINGHUA with an increasingly solemn expression.)
QINGHUA: I can't imagine what it's like, being so close with your shadow. I could never approach him like that.
SHEN YUAN: (looking away) ...To be honest, I sort of... Feel bad for Master Shang.
QINGHUA: (head whipping up, incredulous) ...Ah???
SHEN YUAN: It's bothered me for some time, but for us living dolls, we spend our time surrounded by other dolls, cleaning and working together. But all day, the only person Master Shen can talk to is me. It's only now, after all this time, that he is even allowed to leave his room.
(QINGHUA looks away, expression bitter and closed off.)
QINGHUA: ...So? What's your point?
SHEN YUAN: I just think, maybe the reason he doesn't talk to you is because he really doesn't know how?
(QINGHUA looks back at SHEN YUAN with growing apprehension.)

Shang Qinghua is the quietest of the Shadow Masters of the current debutant class--even his Doll has never heard him speak. Shang Qinghua produces very little soot, and so Qinghua (as the Doll calls himself, lacking a formal name) finds himself frequently with an abundance of time and nervous energy. In his prolonged stress, he's taken to writing short stories in the library, though whether this actually helps is anyone's guess...

Considering how jealous LBH is, just how jealous is Bing-ge that HIS Face can hold hands with SY in public and get head pats? Because of how their society is, Bing-ge has to stew in vinegar until they're behind closed doors and he can get his head pats from SY. One time SY combs Bing Mei's hair and leaves a plait in it, and Bing-ge nearly DIES from sheer jealousy.
it's okay!!! dolls need to match their shadows, so of course sy will braid bingge's hair too!!😊
bingge's also going a special kind of insane bc of course he would try to win sy over in classic bingge fashion and sy would simply not pick on any of it. and yet somehow he's still so genuinely sweet? half the time he's around sy he's arguing with sj (and isn't that something, for someone whose mo is flattery and backstabbing--being openly disagreeable is not something he DOES) and yet sy seems to like him just fine. it just--he doesn't GET it, and also he's zeroed in on it like a starving man who's spotted food

so like, what is this shadow au? What's going on here?
well first and foremost, this au is based around the concepts in Shadows House, an anime which i consumed like a starved man earlier this year(?? time isnt real) and then tore through the whole fucking manga in a desperate deranged state. it's very good and the plot is SO juicy and i cannot recommend it enough. there are also certain themes or plot points this au parallels (sj is running a similar origin to kate, sqh has a similar fate as rum, etc) which are easier to spot when you've seen the source material.
if you'd like a quicker (spoiler-free) explanation, though:
imagine there is a grand mansion atop a cliff in which lives a "family" of beings called Shadows. These beings are entirely pitch black, and emanate a smoke-looking substance they call soot. The Shadows Family is a family of elite nobles, where the Great Grandfather, lord of the Shadows House, is absolute in their corner of the world. However, these beings lack the fundamental ability to emote or visibly express themselves, and so every member of the family has what is known as a Living Doll; a human-like being created by the Great-Grandfather, meant to serve both as a personal housekeeper, and more relevantly, their Face. Living Dolls exist to represent their Shadow Master and express their emotions for them, and to take care of the house. Prior to "debuting" with their face, Shadows are not permitted to leave their room or interact with the rest of the family, and Living Dolls are not meant to question their Master or the House, or have any real interiority. However, it quickly becomes apparent there is more nuance to the Living Dolls than advertised, and more to the Shadows, and the House itself, than first appears...

Thinking about your Shadow House AU again and wondering if ZZL is the Anthony expy. Assuming there IS an Anthony expy in the first place.
I was GOING to say there sort of is and there sort of isnt an Anthony expy but halfway through articulating that thought i had an epiphany and i have just now decided!!!!! that Yes He Is
normally i might keep big plot ideas like this to myself until executed, but since your ask is the only reason it ever even occurred to me i think it is fair to divulge my thoughts!! warning for spoilers etc etc (also for my rough draft stream of consciousness)
now see the thing is. i have MOST of the characters pinned down in the overarching timeline. but up until this point i have had very little idea how i was going to tie zzl in. i wanted him to be connected to sxy, i had some tentative ideas of him being a couple gens below and around before the sxy + yqy class was invited.
but i am of the sort that if im to refuse a suggestion i want to at least consider how it would work, so i can know im choosing the best (coolest) option. so i took a moment, and thought: if zzl was anthony's expy, that, of course, means he needs a shadow. for plenty of character i have simply made up their shadows, but that's only been if the shadow amplifies part of their already existent character. the thing about anthony is that he has a shadow who is very different than him. charming and inspiring and not actually so sharp as his face, but clearly with a sense of justice and kindness. these characteristics are rather different from anthony's, and more importantly, rather different from zzl. if the shadow is a foil, id rather use an existing sv character rather than construct an entire oc
this immediately led me to another point very important to anthony and christopher's dynamic: the whole bit about christopher killing himself upon discovering what he was expected to do to his doll. if you would like my Hot Take on the matter, i very firmly believe that anthony killed him and just painted a beautiful word picture for rose. i could go into my thoughts on that, but its rather tangential so i wont here. what's IMPORTANT is that this conviction led me immediately to where i am now. i know what i must do.
zhuzhi-lang human, gongyi xiao shadow. i think its a fun reversal of canon in a way, but more importantly, gongyi xiao could assume christopher's role splendidly. his charm and perfect role model golden boy vibes. his unfaltering sense of justice which does NOT keep up with the corruption of his immediate surroundings.
this means gyx's comparative age would be notably older than in sv, except he's dead so it doesn't matter. for it to be viable he would NEED to be connected to sxy, which ties up that requirement great. it would be much harder to finagle the timing of everything if zzl/gxy debuted after sxy, and them being older would be. weird. so instead it would work best if they were slightly younger children but of the same debutant class.
whether gyx's death is suicide or simply framed as such, it holds up startling well i think. and now we can have zzl slithering around in the shadows :]c

And now I'm imagining Bing-ge trying to woo SQQ just to get close to his Face, and SJ being like "cut the bullshit, I know full well that it's my Face you're interested in." *through gritted teeth* "I will allow you to court my Face, just as long as you respect his choice. Also be my ally." Bing-ge. "Ok." I'm going to bet that the Qing gen will eventually become Star Bearers, though Idk who're the current ones.

that is more or less how it goes, although they do sort of have. a thing. of some kind. there. ive also toyed with the idea of sqq and bingge getting officially engaged ("""so that it would be easier to meet for communication""" and """it would make them less suspicious in general to appear as though they plan on advancing to adulthood some day""")
heres a relationship endgame chart i made while drunk a while ago:
they all get very involved with one another in some way or other as they grow older, and a lot of that has to do with being the only people they can trust in a hostile place for a very long time. a lot of it also has to do with sy being. Like That. its kinda messy and complicated but it Works.
as for the star bearers-- ive not put too much thought into the star bearers at the time the qing kids arrive, but its not particularly important. of the star-bearers before THEM, however, two were Yue Qingyuan, and Su Xiyan.
of the qing kids, inevitably mqf will become head of the relief team sooner or later, and sqq is currently gunning for a star-bearer position as well, and considering both his goals and skills, if he makes it, he'll be the leader of the star-bearers

frankly this au is like two of my brainworms had a beautiful brainworm baby and i cannot get enough of it, so thank YOU for enabling me to talk endlessly about it. i sometimes take a hot minute to answer bc i prefer to handle asks on desktop, and i might abstain from answering certain things if i have Plans for them underway which i want to wait to share, but make no mistake i LOVE being asked things, especially about my little projects!!!!
as for the bingys, they are Suffering... both of them are the type to want to completely monopolize the person they like, and in this setting in particular they were doomed from the outset... rip
