I made a comment saying "Congratulations on your purchase!" on a post about Paris Hiltons new surrogacy baby
And BOYYY are the "Be kind!" women out in FORCE today
You know what is "kind"? Not purchasing a baby. Not forcing a woman to carry a child because you don't want to.
Having a baby is not a *right*. There are many options available to those who want to parent and can't/won't give birth - options that aren't trafficking in human children.

This tragic surrogacy case is being reported on by pro-life groups as a reason to be anti-abortion, but in my opinion it deeply exemplifies why women's bodily autonomy is so important. It protects us in both ways!
This woman carried a pregnancy and then was given no control over its outcome BECAUSE surrogacy strips women of their bodily autonomy. She felt like a "rented womb" because that is all she was viewed as, legally and culturally. I cannot imagine the trauma she is living through.
I also am looking through the tweets on this case and trying to determine how these pro-life folks read their own writing and reach the conclusion abortion=bad and not the conclusion thar no bodily autonomy=bad. But regardless! Info below.

I went to the comments to hopefully see left leaning folks reaching the same conclusion I was, and was deeply saddened by what I found.

There is some cognitive dissonance happening with the left and I don't know how to resolve it. If you understand a woman has a right to choose whether or not she carries a pregnancy to term, then certainly you understand we have fundamental rights over our own bodies and their outcomes. How are you then comfortable with that disappearing in the case of organ rental? How are you comfortable with the concept of organ rental?
It's frustrating. I don't think I have more to say other than I'm frustrated.

A few days ago, the Greek police dismantled a human trafficking network that was exploiting women, calling it "altruistic surrogacy." The victims were mainly Romani women from Bulgaria and Romania (source).

The absolute dystopian horror that is commercial surrogacy where western privileged women buy the bodies of poorer women in the Global South. The way so many celebrity women have done it. Just the absolute height of patriarchal capitalism, in a world where we’re so disconnected from our bodies, and our communities, and everything must be a commodity. It’s all so banal and surreal and people are so focused on the hypothetical situation where it could be moral instead of the reality. How can you see Ukrainian women being made to “rent out” their wombs in a war and condone this.

Surrogacy is the continuation of millenia of men claiming that they are the life force/source of the soul for babies, and that women are just the mindless vessels for them. Only now that men have learnt more about genetics, they’ve decided to use this to continue the exact same line of thinking “I own the genetics and the surrogate is just a vessel who has no legal or moral right to her body or her children.” There is no justification for men owning women’s bodies regardless of whether it’s a priest or a scientist claiming otherwise.

The path to peace calls for respect for life, for every human life, starting with the life of the unborn child in the mother’s womb, which cannot be suppressed or turned into an object of trafficking. In this regard, I deem deplorable the practice of so-called surrogate motherhood, which represents a grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child, based on the exploitation of situations of the mother’s material needs. A child is always a gift and never the basis of a commercial contract. Consequently, I express my hope for an effort by the international community to prohibit this practice universally. At every moment of its existence, human life must be preserved and defended; yet I note with regret, especially in the West, the continued spread of a culture of death, which in the name of a false compassion discards children, the elderly and the sick.

IVF and surrogacy aren't just intrinsically wrong because there can be embryos discarded or dead in the process; it's also intrinsically wrong because each child deserves to made in the marital embrace of a married couple.
While yes, each child born from IVF and pre-marital sex are still made in the image and likeness of God, that doesn't negate the fact that those actions are still wrong.
If conservatives are against children getting mastectomies and puberty blockers because they're too young to make irreversible decisions, then they should also be against experiments being done at the most vulnerable stage of human development.
There are ways to treat infertility without resorting to IVF and surrogacy.

Payment for surrogacy gets really complicated because on one hand paying for it means most surrogates will end up being lower class women who need the money and will be easier to exploit, something which is rife in the current implementation of surrogacy, but on the other hand being pregnant is genuinely like body horror to me and I think that if you go through that for someone else you should get a billion dollars.

Too many people are okay with surrogacy being legal. It’s just another form of patriarchal violence and exploitation of the woman’s body i’ll never ever support it, it’s disgusting.

Anonymous surrogate mother
I was an altruistic surrogate a few years ago and was abandoned by the intended parents (IPs). We were really close before and I allowed them to get close to my children. My UK surrogacy agency instilled in me that I had to be close friends with the IPs to reduce the risk of the arrangement breaking down. I regret this now, I only hope my children aren’t feeling too much of a loss from being used by the IPs.
Anonymous midwife
During my 13-year career as a midwife I witnessed many negative consequences of surrogacy for women.
The first time I encountered a surrogate mother was when I was caring for her when she was unwell in the high dependency unit. She had been commissioned by two gay men to carry a baby for them. It was her egg. There was a vast age gap between the two men and one of them died during the pregnancy. The younger one no longer wanted the baby. This young mother was then left to bring up the baby by herself. She was vulnerable, poor, and had previously been a victim of domestic abuse.
I have also been involved in the care of a young woman who was carrying a baby for a heterosexual couple who divorced. It was their egg and sperm. They no longer wanted the child. She was bullied into a termination at 22 weeks gestation.
Another horrifying story was of a mother of three children in her 30s who discovered she had a terminal condition and had to terminate the pregnancy at 20 weeks. She later died leaving three children. The surrogacy did not cause the condition but it hastened her death.
There are many other stories of trauma which I cannot share due to them being identifiable.
In my experience it is only poor and vulnerable women who choose to become surrogates. Wealthy, educated women never choose to become surrogates. If it’s only poor women, how can it truly be a choice? It is exploitation.
In the UK we are not meant to have commercial surrogacy but it is evident that we do. Women are given vast sums of money as “expenses”. When they are using their own eggs, it can only be described as human trafficking.
I have also cared for women after “successful” surrogacies. These women feel immense loss and sadness after giving birth and handing over the child. Even if it’s not their genetics the mother-foetal dyad is still powerful. Women are not microwaves. We tell pregnant women to bond with their babies in utero and to talk to them to help brain development. The babies bond with the mother as they grow. Then they are ripped away at birth. Some never see them again after the first day. It is barbaric.
Share your story
We believe that there are many women who are suffering in silence after having an unhappy, damaging or traumatic experience of ‘donating’ their eggs or being a ‘surrogate’ mother for the benefit of others. If this has happened to you and you’d like to share your story anonymously, please see our Share your surrogacy or eggsploitation story page.

i dont know if this has been shared to radblr yet, but first news piece I read today on reddit - Fernando Alves Ferreira, a man from argentina, murdered the surrogate mother of 'his' 2 children - and now identifies as a woman so he is not charged with femicide. you will not see tweets with thousands and thousands of likes and retweets over these news - but you will see them of the new contrapoints video whining about JKR. www(.)reddit(.)com/r/fourthwavewomen/comments/12rgg9u/fernando_alves_ferreira_and_his_boyfriend/
i know TRAs have been using argentina as proof that there’s no risks of self-ID, well… i guess they’ll be downplaying trying to get out of life imprisonment for femicide using self-ID laws somehow.
this is disgusting and is also a good reminder that gay men are still men and will take advantage of female bodies and male privilege when they need to.
