Theres something really insidious about how gastric bypass advocates deny that essential organ mutilation is unhealthy.
"I've lost so much weight I'm so healthy" your stomach is mutilated.
"My doctor is praising my progress" your stomach is mutilated.
"I fit in so many more clothes now"
Tumblr media
Because an essential, life sustaining organ in your body was cut up and your digestive system rerouted.
Health isn't the end all be all of value, humanity or importance but I feel like there is a huge lie here when this is "healthy" and it's just ignored.
Sorry to just bring this up out of no where but I was reminded of how little this is really talked about in bypass circles. Like, no matter what, you are now unhealthy. The spector of health continues. The Ouroboros is unbroken. Only this time it's doctor approved.

Okay, I’m just gonna say it… yandere doctors and surgeons using tools of the trade to write their names, or maybe just the word “mine” all over and inside of their Darling. Scalpels or dissolving stitches for your skin, little cauterizing tools for internal organs…

I've gotten some messages from folks wondering where I went, my apologies for my absence but I have been very ill for a long while now, then in the hospital, then surgery. I'm home now, recovery is going okay but it's going to take some time, if you've sent me asks or messages I'm sorry for the delayed response, hope to respond to everything soon.

AITA for doing surgery on my colleague?
[CW: non-consensual surgery, something that could be interpreted as ableism]
My colleague (30sF) went on a trip to India a few years ago, and while there she was shot. She went to the hospital, but was told that she was fine, and a couple years passed, she was mostly fine and she started working for me (30M). This didn’t really affect anything, I couldn’t get her fired, or change what she was paid, but we worked in the same department.
She didn’t know, however that the bullet was in her leg and causing an infection that affected her mood, made her more violent (threatening me on multiple occasions, killing someone (quite viciously) in self defense, my other colleague (30sF) said she was uncharacteristically angry), and while I don’t think it would’ve killed her, it would have significantly changed her, in a way that’s impossible to come back from.
I discovered that she still had the bullet in her leg and it was causing the infection — it’s not important how — and told my other colleague. My other colleague suggested that we do surgery to remove the bullet (I’m not a surgeon, but I knew that I could do this for certain). I agreed, and we got everything we needed to do it.
I managed to get the bullet out (which would work to stop the infection, trust me) but she woke up and stabbed me in the shoulder with a scalpel. My colleague was unharmed. I managed to get away before she could stab me more, and my colleague — who she didn’t want to kill as much — took care of her.
I know that it was awful, what I did, but believe me that the alternative would’ve been worse. I know I said she wouldn’t be dead, but honestly, it might as well be. So, AITA?

So, I was doing some research for fanfic writing and I was looking for real life examples of doctors, in particular surgeons, who use wheelchairs. I don't want this to come across as inspiration porn, but I feel like everybody should know that there are doctors who use wheelchairs. There are surgeons who use wheelchairs. Any medical school or hospital that claims that they can't accommodate wheelchair users just doesn't want to.
Look at Dr. Muraszko doing pediatric brain surgery in her wheelchair. Some able-bodied surgeons operate while sitting down so why should it be such a big deal that a surgeon needs a wheelchair?
Tumblr media
She's just doing her job and helping kids. There is so much ablism in medical schools that wheelchair users aren't even given a chance, no matter how intelligent and capable they are. And look! Alls what they had to do is lower the operating table a little. Accommodation achieved.
Here's Dr. Okanlami. Many surgical procedures require the doctor to be able to look down into the patient's body so he uses a type of wheelchair that supports him in a standing position.
Tumblr media
I mean, of course it is possible to look down into something from a seated position if it's low enough. Really, he's accommodating everyone else by having the operating table high up.
Here's Dr. Jim Post. He's chief of internal medicine at his hospital. He is an incomplete quadriplegic. Many medical schools rejected him even though he was at the top of his classes at frikin Harvard. How does he practice without the full use of his hands you may ask? It's as simple as having access to an assistant. Here is a picture of him listening to a patient's heart with an assistant holding the stethoscope in place.
Tumblr media
Able bodied doctors in the hospital, unlike on tv, are assisted by medical staff all the time and they may not have the particular skills of those staff ex. being able to start an iv line without covering the patient in bruises and then deal with the finicky iv pump. Total double standard.
This is a smaller sample of the article I read about doctors who use wheelchairs. There's a second one linked to it about nurses too!
Again, the point isn't "wow look at what these people have achieved despite their disabilities," it's "look at how fucking doable it is to accommodate doctors who use wheelchairs."
Anyways, back to writing dystopian star trek fan fic about Dr. Parmak with his bad back and heart problems. Poor guy really needs to let himself sit down but he's such a masochist.

Yas I love Dia and I love question time!! <3 I will ask the questions.
What is disabling about Dia's condition? If she is immortal, will she nevertheless die without unicorn flesh or will she become weak, etc? She eats her own flesh and regenerates, yes? What is keeping her from choosing a non-valuable part of herself like a tail or an ear and allowing it to regenerate?
Ah thank you!
Dia has lupus alongside of her immortality, just as an aside, if that furthers this answer !
Dia's immortality will block her from completely dying of starvation, however she will essentially experience the physical effects of it - i.e. weight loss, weakness, etc. She can keep some of it at bay from eating raw deer meat, as deer are the closest mortal relatives to unicorn, but it is not an absolute solution.
So, the magic that works to keep unicorns alive after cannibalization is not effective with autocannibalism, as it requires at least two being present to work. Dia's loophole is to eat part of her liver, which has natural regenerative capabilities which are then aided by her immortality.
She's only been in a situation once where she could not get external help with the process of getting a part of her liver. She did consider cutting off an extremity like you said, but was too afraid of living without them, and preformed the surgery on her own, which was traumatic, and made her very unwilling to stray too far from her homebase going forward. Regeneration doesn't work on full amputations, she can lose body parts permanently if not through the magic process of multiple unicorns practicing it together, though she is able to heal superficial things like scars completely overtime.

Yesterday on my theater blog I ranted abt Crutchie and how he can be baby-ifed by the Newsies fandom.
This is infact ableism and I want to discuss why I’m very loud about this.
CW - Ableism, medical experience, ileostomy, surgery, GI issues
Since I was a baby, I struggled with GI issues. My doc thought I could control it but I in fact couldn’t. I wasn’t taken care of until my older sister had graduated. Then, I was 10-11 I got a diagnosis that was wrong and got a surgery that made things worse for me.
Up until this year, I got the correct diagnosis and I went under an ileostomy surgery. Now my family treats me as if I’m 100% able bodied and get mad when I take care of myself.
My experience has been with medical ableism, ableism with an invisible illness and not being cared for medically by my parents.
It’s been hell, I’ve gotten better but I need those to know that those with visible illness should be cared for but not babied. And those with invisible illnesses need to be cared for but understood that we aren’t always able bodied.

This is now a stan account for The Artful Dodger. It had my husband and I gasping at the screen, wide-eyed, hands holding out faces. I'm gonna start writing dodgefox fanfiction. SEASON 2 WHEN?! I'm telling you, it's so good.
