Magic Cookie Bars – Roaring Forks and Riverside Mill

I was so on the fence about doing this recipe. I know that these are super popular at the two spots where they’re served (Roaring Forks at the Wilderness Lodge and Riverside Mill at Port Orleans, Riverside) and there’s no denying that they taste amazing. The thing is, though, the recipe for these isn’t exactly hard to find… Growing up, I had these bars every year for Christmas (though we called them Seven Layer Bars), and I’ve heard them referred to as everything from candy cookie bars to kitchen sink bars. I think a lot of people, in some form or another, have a variation of this treat in their recipe box. More Delicious Recipes You Will Love: - Magical Star Cocktail – Disney Parks - Mahi Mahi Tacos: A Delicious Seafood Delight - Mealie Pap – Tusker House The thing is, though… These are my favorite bars, hands down, of all time. Every Christmas, I think I put away at least a pan of these suckers. When I found out a local bakery near where I worked a few years ago sold these, I got one every single day and never got tired of it. And Disney? They put mini M&M’s on top. I don’t do that with my recipe… So that was all I needed to justify to myself that I had to make the Disney version too.  While my diet didn’t thank me, I have no regrets.  Well, none that the treadmill couldn’t cure. My only reminder for to those making these is to really grease the pan before assembling these bars. The sweetened condensed milk on the top really melds to the dish and is super hard to chisel out. Foil-lining the dish may be the way to go… To make these like they serve at Roaring Forks, top with the mini M&M’s, but leave them off to re-create the bar from Riverside Mill. To keep them from cracking, put them on while the bar is still warm, don’t bake them with the bar.  That’s what I did. Lessons were learned. tusker is sold throughout east africa, so they could be going to any East African country. Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi are closer to Rwanda than Kenya, but I don’t know Burundi or Uganda to have much animal or nature tourism. I would guess too that they’re heading to kenya or tanzania, but I kinda hope they visit both since they’re super close and the nature/animals are unbeatable. Tanzania also has Mt. Kilimanjaro, which is a big pull around this time. I’m a little biased because I’m Tanzanian-American, but I’m honestly super happy Lewis and his friends are going this trip, visiting your possible ancestral home country does something to a person lol.

Well I thought they could be going to Tanzania too, bc I read somewhere that Sir wanna go a safari. And if I know right, Tanzania is the best place for that. But anyway it seems they headed to Kenya. :) Let's see what will be the next stop.

Synthwave act Super Tusker has released its debut album, Earth Noise. The 13-track effort is only $1 on Bandcamp, with 100% of proceeds being donated to the no-kill animal shelter MaxFund. It's also available on all streaming services.

Fans of Stranger Things, Vangelis, and John Carpenter, the synthesizer-based instrumental band draws inspiration from dark electronic music while fostering an upbeat, major-key ambience.

Super Tusker is the latest project from Denver, CO-based multi-instrumentalist Jacob Belcher (Its Teeth, ex-Drop Dead Gorgeous), who handles all synthesizers and programming as well as engineering, mixing, and mastering.

Earth Noise was written throughout 2016 and 2017, but it wasn't until the pandemic hit in 2020 that Belcher was able to dedicate the time to completing the album. Appropriately, the release focuses on the beauty that the world has to offer even in dark times. Belcher explains:

I think the most important thing we can do as a species is to protect the natural world. Although I have no lyrical content, every song has a meaning and tries to convey a message. The entire focus of Super Tusker is on the Earth and the many amazing things on it.

How to Make Chef Mickey's Breakfast Pizza: A Delicious Recipe

I’ve heard a lot about the breakfast pizza at Chef Mickey’s… Next to Mickey Waffles and Dole Whips, the breakfast pizza is one of the most talked about “must have” foods at Walt Disney World. While certainly most commonly attached to Chef Mickey’s, I can say that I’ve also seen it in various forms at Tusker House, Crystal Palace, and other breakfast buffets. Clearly, I didn’t get what the fascination was and I was OK with that. My son, however, talks about when he went to Chef Mickey’s and had breakfast pizza with the same enthusiasm that people reserved for when they met The Beatles. There were three things he could share about his trip… He went to Animal Kingdom Lodge, he saw lots of animals, and he had breakfast pizza with Mickey at Chef Mickey’s. Could he remember what rides he did? Nope. Did he remember which parks he saw? Nope. The characters he saw?  Kind of. Where he ate? To listen to him talk, it was Chef Mickey’s and breakfast pizza the whole trip. Considering how wild he was about the pizza and that yesterday was the first day of school (we start after labor day in our area… Don’t be too jealous, we go to school until about July), I figured it’d be a nice treat for him. This really was a “the kids will like it, just make it” recipe.  Even my husband was kind of “yeah, I’ll try it” but overall not to excited to eat it. I realized that this wasn’t exactly what I thought it was as I was putting it together. It’s more of a really thin, cheesy quiche than scrambled eggs baked with cheese on a pizza crust, which is what I thought it was. Putting it together was super easy and fast (big plus) and it didn’t create a lot of dishes (super big plus). When I served it, the kids went nuts! I didn’t get half as much fanfare for doing a full Thanksgiving dinner as I did for this pizza. Everybody had at least 2 slices… Obviously this means this passes the kid test with flying colors.  It also got the thumbs up from my husband who also had more than just a couple slices. After eating it, I have to say that I’ve judged breakfast pizza wrong for all these years. It’s actually really, really good!  You can really taste the different cheeses and there is an undertone of quiche-like eggyness to it that’s not dominating or overwhelming. Personally, I think copious amounts of bacon or sausage would make this the perfect meal (isn’t that how it’s served at Tusker House?  I think it is, actually), but it’s really good just with the cheese and eggs. Something fast, kid-pleasing, and easy to put together? For sure my dinner table will be seeing this meal again. Conclusion After putting it to the test, we can confidently say that Chef Mickey's Breakfast Pizza is a delicious and unique dish that is perfect for breakfast or brunch. This pizza is topped with a blend of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and cheese, making it a perfect combination of savory breakfast flavors. The crust is perfectly crispy and chewy, adding a perfect texture to the dish. Whether you're a fan of pizza or simply looking for a fun and delicious breakfast option, the Chef Mickey's Breakfast Pizza is definitely worth a try. Südafrika 2021/22 - Tag 11 / 1

Herrschaften und Oukies!

Heute verlassen wir das Foxy Crocodile Bush Retreat im Marloth Park und es geht tatsächlich “richtig” in den Kruger Nationalpark.

Es hat uns super gut gefallen und wir sind froh, dass wir hier den Aufenthalt verlängert haben und dafür auf eine Übernachtung im Skukuza Restcamp verzichteten.

Wir können diese Unterkunft zu 100 Prozent weiter empfehlen und haben uns fest vorgenommen noch einmal wieder zu kommen.

Für Sparfüchse gibt es aktuell 20 Prozent Rabatt bei Direktbuchung, denn auch diese Unterkunft ist von den ganzen übereilten Stornierungen der Auslandsgäste stark betroffen.

Jetzt, wo die Feiertage vorbei sind, werden es immer weniger Gäste. Ab dem 8. Januar ist für die nächsten Wochen gar kein Tag mehr vermietet. Es ist ein Elend.

Bis jetzt haben wir es nicht bereut diese Reise angetreten zu haben. 

Unser Auto ist wieder beladen, die zusätzliche Übernachtung bezahlt, wir haben uns bei Gail & Mark verabschiedet - auf geht es in den Kruger Nationalpark.

Zuvor müssen wir aber noch am Security Gate des Marloth Parks auschecken und unsere Aufenthaltsgenehmigung wieder abgeben.

Wir fahren durch das süd-östliche Gate mit Namen Crocodile Bridge in den Kruger NP. Doch vorher sind noch einige Formalitäten zu erledigen. Neben dem  üblichen Confirmation Letter über die getätigten Buchungen bei SANParks, gibt es nun noch ein erweitertes „Gate entry Form“ mit Corona bezogenen Gesundheitsfragen, das man bei Einreise in den Park vorlegen muss.

Da wir bereits vor einigen Tagen die Wildcard für uns gekauft hatten, entfallen für uns jegliche Eintrittszahlungen in den südafrikanischen Nationalparks für das kommende Jahr.

Die Formalitäten sind schnell erledigt und so fahren wir in den Park, um auf der Crocodile River Road am Fluss entlang zu fahren. Noch vor dem eigentlichen Camp begrüßt uns ein Big Tusker:

Unser Ziel ist die S28, die durch zumeist erfreulich offenes Grasland führt und im Vergleich zur, in etwa parallel führenden Hauptstraße, weitaus weniger befahren ist.

Im Süden des Kruger National Park wechseln sich Marulabäume und Akazien mit ebenen Weideflächen und sanften Hügeln ab. Hier findet man eine hohe Tierdichte, viele Camps und Gates und somit auch die meisten Parkbesucher.

Wir kommen nicht weit und stehen plötzlich mitten in einer gigantischen Herde Büffel.

Rechts Büffel, links Büffel, Büffel rennen über die Straße - es sind mehrere hundert Tiere. An ein Weiterfahren ist nicht zu denken.

Auf einigen Hauptverbindungen gibt es manchmal Stau. Besonders an Wochenenden, Ferien oder Feiertagen kommen zahlreiche Tagesbesucher hinzu. Heute wurden nur noch Gäste mit bestätigter Übernachtung eingelassen.

Wir biegen später in Richtung des Sabie Rivers ab. Die Region rund um das Main Camp Lower Sabie ist im Gegensatz zum Norden des Kruger National Park sehr gut besucht. Hier hat man allerdings die Sichtungen an der Straße mit Sicherheit nicht für sich allein, schnell sammeln sich zahlreiche Autos an. 

Der Süden des Kruger National Park wird auf Grund seiner Tierdichte und der besseren Erreichbarkeit viel mehr besucht als das Zentrum oder der tropische Norden. Dennoch lohnt es sich auch hier Ausschau zu halten und manchmal bieten mit Glück auch ein paar Tiere eine Privatvorstellung.

Der Sabie River entspringt auf 1.100 Meter am Fuße des 2286 Meter hohen Mount Anderson im Hochland von Mpumalanga in Südafrika. Er durchquert die Provinz in Richtung Osten, fließt durch den Kruger-Nationalpark, überquert die Grenze nach Mosambik und fließt dort als Nebenfluss in den Komati. Dieser mündet dann in den Indischen Ozean. Einer der wichtigsten Zuflüsse ist der Sand River. Entlang der Strecke stehen einige der schönsten und ältesten Bäume im Kruger.

Die wunderschöne Lower Sabie Road, die sich direkt am Fluss entlang schlängelt, ist sozusagen die "Rennstrecke" des Parks, da sie asphaltiert ist und die beiden wichtigsten Camps des Südens miteinander verbindet. Kein Wunder, denn an den Ufern des Sabie gibt es eine sehr artenreiche Fauna und Flora.

Durch die Nähe zum Fluss hat man hier oft die Gelegenheit einige Antilopenarten wie Impalas, Wasserböcke, Buschböcke, Klipspringer, Nyalas oder Kudus zu sichten. Die hohe Dichte an Impalas und Perlhühnern macht die Region auch für Leoparden sehr attraktiv.

Große Pavianherden spielen gerne auf der glatten Straße und lassen sich so gut beobachten. Dabei sollte man darauf achten, die Fenster möglichst geschlossen zu halten, sonst hat man unter Umständen einen frechen Mitreisenden mehr im Innenraum.

Auch Elefanten halten sich gerne am grünen Flussufer auf und gehen hier baden.

Am frühen Nachmittag erreichen wir unser erstes Kruger Camp, das Skukuza Rest Camp. 

Mit wenigen Schritten sitzt man weiter vorn auf einer Bank mit Blick auf den Fluss und erreicht auch den Weg weiter unten, der direkt zum Restaurantbereich führt.

Für den Abend haben wir eine Tischreservierung im letzten Jahr neu eröffneten Restaurant Kruger Station (Krüger Bahnhof).

Die Kruger Station ist Teil des neuen Kruger Shalati Train on a Bridge Hotelprojekts, die ein modernes kulinarisches Erlebnis auf dem riesigen Bahnsteig bietet, auf dem die originale Dampflokomotive der SA Railway Class 24 im Mittelpunkt steht. Die Selati Eisenbahnbrücke stammt aus dem Jahr 1912.

Das Restaurant steht allen Besuchern von Skukuza offen, um eine Mahlzeit oder einen Drink zu genießen. Der an die Lokomotive gekoppelte alte Zugwagen ist als privater Essbereich mit Platz für 16 Gäste gestaltet.

Der Wagen kann für besondere Anlässe oder Feierlichkeiten gebucht werden. Das nach der Lokomotive benannte Restaurant 3638 hingegen ist ein Restaurant mit 95 Sitzplätzen.

Beides war hervorragend und, wie so oft hier in Südafrika, ein top Preis/Leistungsverhältnis.
