#streaked tenrec
Lesser known small mammals (or mammals whenever i bring up people have no idea what im talking about)
Tumblr media
Quoll ..a carnivorous marsupial native to Australia that spends most of the day sleeping in its dens. there have been 111 recorded events of quolls eating human remains (x) (pictured here is a spotted-tail quoll)
Tumblr media
Numbat..an insectivorous marsupial from Australia that is diurnal (or is primarily active during the day). unlike other mammals that primarily eat termites, they have a jaw with 50 very small teeth. they live in tree hollows and block the openings with the thick hide of their rump
Tumblr media
Hyrax ..a small thickset herbivorous mammal that is more closely related to elephants and sea cows than pikas and marmots. theyre found in africa, and they have rubbery paw pads that help them climb up rocks (this is a rock hyrax)
Tumblr media
Solenodon... a venomous, insectivorous little mammal that is easily provoked into a frenzy of squeaking and biting. it uses echolocation to compensate for its poor eyesight, and females have two teats almost located on its backside (above is a cuban solenodon)
Tumblr media
Sengi (elephant shrews (or better known as the get a look at the snout species))...is another insectivore that is more closely related to elephants than true shrews. they live in southern Africa and have relatively large brains for their size (a respectable 11 inches) (this is a black and rufous sengi)
Tumblr media
Tenrec..omnivorous little mammal that lives in land, sea, underground, and in trees. there are many different subspecies of tenrec that can look like hedgehogs, opossums, rats, and shrews (this is one is a lowland streaked tenrec from madagascar)

Talented Tenrecs
The lowland streaked tenrec (Hemicentetes semispinosus) is a member of the extraordinarily Tenrecidae family, which is found exclusively on Madagascar. This particular species resides on the east side of the island, in tropical rainforests. Their range can also overlap with their cousins the highland streaked tenrec, which inhabits both rainforests and savannas.
This species is quite small, ranging from only 140-172 mm (5.5- 6.8 in) in length and weighing 280 g (9.9 oz) at maximum. Despite their stature, they are hard to overlook as their coloration-- black with a bright yellow or orange crest and stripes-- can be quite striking. In many ways H. semispinosis resembles shrews and hedgehogs; the body-shape is round, with an elongated snout and large claws for digging. Like hedgehogs, the lownald tenrec also sports large quills along the length of its body as a means of protection. However, tenrecs are not at all related to hedgehogs and the resemblence is entirely due to convergent evolution.
In addition to acting as an impenetrable defence, the lowland tenrec's spines are also used for communication. When rubbed together the quills create a high-pitched sound that members of a group use to alert each other and warns away potential predators like snakes, fossas, mongooses, and civets. This species is the only known mammal to use this method of communication, which is more commonly found in insects and snakes.
H. semispinosis can be found either on their own or living in groups of up to 25, all of whom reside in underground burrows. Individuals spend most of their time foraging for their primary food source, worms, and is active both during the day and at night. However, during the winter months of June and July they may enter a state of hibernation known as torpor, during which they decrease their heart rates and metabolism.
Reproduction occurs during the rainy season, from November to May, though in ideal conditions the lowland streaked tenrec can breed year-round. Reproductively active males will spar one another for access to females, though females will also resist mating if they aren't receptive to the male. Pregnancy lasts about 58 days, after which the mother gives birth to an average of 6 young. The babies take less than a month to wean, and become fully mature at only 40 days old. On average, individuals can live about 30 months in captivity.
Conservation status: Within their range, the lowland tenrec is highly abundant and has a stable population, so is rated Least Concern by the IUCN.

WHAT SPECIES OF TENREC IS SURGE?
Tumblr media
Most people don't realize that there are several species of tenrec on Madagascar some being mole tenrec or otter tenrec and hedgehog tenrec but the one I found fits surge and it's the lowlands streaked tenrec
Tumblr media
This little guy is what surge is and this little guy has two interesting things about him, the first is that he can rub his quills together to make ultrasonic chirps like a cricket which may explain why surge has electric powers like static electricity also probably because this little guy looks like he lost a fight with a light socket XD, second is that all species of tenrec have cloaca like lizards and birds a cloaca is were urine and feces are excreted at once I will say no more on that front.
So tell me your thoughts in the comments did I get it right or do have other ideas on what species of tenrec surge is.

VOTE LOWLAND STREAKED TENREC FOR THE @WEIRDANIMAL-TOURNAMENT
Tumblr media
more closely related to elephants and manatees than to shrews or rodents. yep, you heard that right.
only found in madagascar, which automatically gives it weirdness points
has specialized quills on its back that rub together to make high-pitched noises. no other mammal makes sound like this, but its how crickets, grasshoppers, and cicadas sing. why is this the only mammal that makes noises like an insect? its from madagascar, what do you expect
the rest of its quills are more porcupine then hedgehog - they will detach and get stuck in predators!
mostly eats earthworms, of all things. somehow is not the only mammal on madagascar that specializes in eating earthworms (check out the falanouc)
tenrecs in general are awesome and super underrated! they drifted over to madagascar from africa several dozen million years ago and are the only little-insectivore-mammals found in madagascar. there are little tree climbers with prehensile tails, basically moles, mini-otters, mini-otters but still in africa for some reason, and multiple types of “basically a hedgehog,” both with and without rolling-up-into-a-ball behavior and with either hedgehog-like or porcupine-like spines. all of them are adorable and i will throw hands with anyone who says otherwise
i also found this on wikipedia:

please please please vote for my precious, she is too pure for this world. there are a lot of truly excellent little insectivorous mammals in the world, but these guys are my favorite.

[ Sona ] Explosive, mischievous and pretty chaotic, meet my sona King! He is Estrelendas' king of explosion and is obsessed with explosives, big or small. Solves everything with explosives, gets in trouble because of it, but it's worth it cus the tuna can is now open
His "tail" fuse isn't actually a tail, but a bomb fuse. Lighting up causes King to explode, launching his yellow quills to the sides like a bomb of needles. Worry not, he doesn't die from the explosion, just stay furless for a few minutes
He can also curl into a ball and use his quills to hook himself onto a wall surface. By rolling slowly, he can go up the wall using his quills this way King has a pretty good smell sense and can find explosives with his nose with ease, sneef snoof!

thank you so much!!!!!!! I just looked up "what the sneef I'm snorfin here animal" and your tags from a year ago informed me that it was an elephant shrew!!! those are such delightful creatures!!!! you are responsible for bringing so much joy into my life!!!!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!! I love their silly little snouts!!!!
See, it's moments like this that are the real reason why I tag everything!
And yeah elephant shrews rule.
Tumblr media
Look at this little freak. It owns.
Elephant shrews (aka sengis) are related to aardvarks, manatees, and of course, elephants. (They aren't especially closely related to true shrews though.)
They belong to the taxonomic clade Afrotheria, which are basically a bunch of mammals that evolved in Africa in the Cretaceous period when it wasn't connected to Eurasia, so they diversified and spread out into lots of different environmental niches.
Presumably a lot of these Afrotherians died out as a result of competition with animals in the same niches from Eurasia when the continents came together, but thankfully we are still left with megafaunal elephants, big ol' sea cows, tiny insectivorous elephant shrews, semi-aquatic giant elephant shrews (potamogalidae), golden moles, and probably my personal favorite: tenrecs which are funny little hedgehoggy mouse-lookin' things that are basically only found in Madagascar.
Like, look at this picture of a lowland streaked tenrec.
Tumblr media
It looks like an electric type Pokemon dude.

Lowland streaked tenrec
Tumblr media
Lowland streaked tenrecs live in the tropical lowland rainforests of Madagascar. They are small with yellow or brown stripes going down their backs, and quills to protect themselves against predators. They make their homes in burrows and feed on worms. Lowland streaked tenrecs have an interesting behavior where they’ll stomp their feet on the ground, supposedly attracting worms, making it easier for them to hunt.
