Plz tell me you're still doing the strawberry shortcake reboot idea p l z
I am! It's slow-going at the moment, I'm kind of waiting for Netflix and co to get their shit together before I work in earnest. For now it's a scrivener document where I'm worldbuilding and mapping out arcs and character development.

[I.D: A clip from a John Mulaney stand-up, shown in five screenshots. The captions are edited to say: Your opinion doesn't matter on Facebook or Twitter either; It matters on tumblr. Tumblr is just your opinion; Just raising your hand and being like; "I think Strawberry Shortcake's a lesbian"; And they're like "thirty-two likes." And that's a whole thing. End I.D]
Edit: Congrats, guys, this meme inspired me to make this a thing.
Edit 2: Since this post has evidently found the radfem circles:

Okay, here's my Strawberry Shortcake reboot pitch:
It's a pretty afternoon in the big city. People are going about their days on their phones, chatting with each other, hailing taxis, heading down into the subway.
Among them, crossing the street, we see our heroine—a teenage girl in a red hoodie and jeans, with messy red hair she probably cut herself, a backpack on her back. She isn't doing a very good job of hiding that she's a runaway.
Our heroine heads down into the subway herself. Everything is brightly lit and cheerful as she gets to the station; bright screens displaying schedules, some vending machines, good lighting, a colorful variety of clothes on the passers by. She grabs herself a bottle of pop from the vending machine, a strawberry cream soda, and leans against the wall to wait for the subway to come.
Train arrives. Our heroine tosses the empty bottle, pockets the cap, and boards. She looks out the window as the train takes off, then looks over sharply as someone says "careful, honey"—it's a mom showing her daughter how to hang onto the bar so she doesn't fall over. Heroine looks dejected for a moment, then the train stops and the mom leaves.
It starts up again. Heroine starts to zone out, until-
"Barry?"
She whips around, making eye contact with an adult guy that has her same red hair, and freezes for a moment before taking off. The man—her older brother?—follows after her, worriedly calling the name. She opens the back door between cars (to the alarm of her fellow passengers), then moves between the train car she's in to the next one and slams the door behind her.
The train makes its next stop, and she races out the door, pushing past the other passengers and bolting up the stairs, frantically jamming her train pass into the turnstile card reader.
"ERROR"
The man looking for her races to the bottom of the stairs, looking around frantically, and our heroine panics and vaults the turnstiles instead. In her wake, we can see wisps of blackish-purple smoke chasing her shadow.
She races up to street level, now with security guards ALSO running after her, and hurries into a clothes store to hide. She hides among the clothes—cameo to 1980 dress beside her—and the security guards pass right by her to go talk with the staff and put them on the lookout.
She backs into the clothing rack and out the other side, in front of the fitting rooms, then enters a room and locks it to hide. She peers through the gap between the door and the fitting room wall, then sighs in relief once the security guards leave. She turns around—
—and comes face to face with a wooden door, set in the wall behind her, that is definitely NOT supposed to be there. It looks like something out of a fairy tale, with carved ivy around its edges, a gold handle, and three strawberry blossoms painted on its surface. She stares.
Her shock is interrupted by a staff member knocking on the door and demanding she come out. She jumps and says she's coming, just a minute, before quickly opening the strange door.
It leads out into darkness.
She hesitates, intimidated, but the staff member knocks again and calls her by that name—"Barry." And that's all the prompting she needs to brave the darkness and go through the door, shutting it behind her. Right before she closes it, the black smoke darts in after her.
The staff member sighs and opens the fitting room door. The runaway is gone, and there's no sign of the mysterious door she went through.
Back to our heroine. She stumbles through darkness, tripping over things she can't see, until light starts to bleed through from above. She's in a forest, full of thorns and thickets, with trees so tall they HAVE to reach the clouds. She looks back behind her—only more brambles. The door has disappeared.
She takes a deep breath and starts walking, calling out for anyone that can hear her, and hanging onto the strawberry bottlecap for good luck. There are several things that spook her while she's in the woods—owls, bats, a particularly large cat, and some things that are definitely tricks of the light—until she comes across a cozy little cottage at the edge of the woods. She's just so relieved to find a place to stay that she walks in without knocking and collapses on the soft fluffy couch and takes a nap.
She gets woken up a bit later by someone shaking her shoulder, and looks up to find two people about her age looking down at her in concern—a well-dressed girl with bright yellow hair, and a boy wearing patched overalls and a striped green scarf. They make sure she's okay, tell her a little bit about the world she's in—Strawberryland, a small corner of Confectia, right outside of Bramble Woods.
They then introduce themselves as the Pie Twins, Lemon Meringue and Huckleberry. She laughs at the absurdity of it all, they banter back and forth for a bit about how those are perfectly normal names, what's HER name, anyways?
"Barry—" she automatically replies, then stops herself. This place is already so weird, and she doesn't want that name following her. She looks at the soda bottlecap still clenched in her fist, at the little strawberry picture on it.
"STRAW-Barry. Call me Strawberry."
End introductory scene.
The first arc is all about her making friends with the locals—Ginger Snap, Angel Cake, Peppermint Fizz, Blueberry Muffin, Orange Blossom, and Plum Pudding, and finding out who these people are and where they came from. Lemon helps her figure out a look that fits the world—that’s how she gets her strawberry hat, and she keeps her red sweater tied around her waist from that point onward (design based heavily on 2003 Strawberry).
Worldbuilding moment: people here are TINY compared to the rest of the world (a strawberry is as big as a beach ball for scale), and the locals are born from flowers in a meadow that sprawls across the center of Confectia (Strawberry is, effectively, the only actual human (that she knows of) here). When Strawberry accidentally bumps into a flower bud that isn't ready to bloom yet, out comes baby Apple Dumplin', who Strawberry quickly adopts as her little sister.
People in Confectia get their name by making something sweet to share with the rest of the world and presenting it to their community. Peppermint Fizz is bitter because nobody thought what she made was sweet enough (peppermint soda is an acquired taste), Orange Blossom was unconventional in that she brought something sweet to SMELL, not to taste, and so on.
Strawberry gets her full name as Strawberry Shortcake when she finally figures out how to bake, which is its own mini-arc of frustration where she has to learn from her friends how to be patient, nice to plants, etc. And then Apple Dumplin' gets her name because Strawberry's determined to help her with anything she needs, teaches herself how to make apple dumplings, then walks Apple through it step by step.
Meanwhile, the shadows that followed Strawberry through the door portal start creeping in, destroying the crops at the fringes of Confectia. And once they're discovered and identified, Strawberry gets blamed for them.

Main Cast (at the moment)
Strawberry Shortcake: A runaway from Galleria City, who wound up in Confectia after going through a strange door. She struggles with being social and gets frustrated easily. She's very task-minded, and likes to get things done as soon as possible, no matter if they're unpleasant or tedious, and despite her shortcomings, she has a big heart and likes to help people—she just needs to learn HOW to. Highly competitive.
Lemon Meringue Pie: Huckleberry's twin sister. A fashion designer that lives outside of Dulcie Village, on the edge of Bramble Woods. She dreams of going to Big Apple City someday to design for models, but stays where she is so that she can look out for her brother. Has problems putting herself first in anything, is very much a "trying to pour from an empty vessel" person.
Huckleberry Pie: Lemon's twin brother. A rescue captain (person that takes up missing person reports) that handles missing persons in Bramble Woods, along with his dog, Pupcake. He's brave—too brave—and keeps getting himself into predicaments because he's not careful. The inhabitants of Dulcie Village think he's spooky and mysterious, and they only know him as the guy that willingly goes into Bramble Woods and brings back wild berries about once a month.
Peppermint Fizz: A very contrary girl who doesn't get along with people and takes perceived insults VERY personally; resents a LOT of people in Dulcie for how they reacted to her name ceremony offering. Very lonely, very cautious around new people, and highly competitive. Quickly becomes rivals with Strawberry.
Ginger Snap: A very socially oblivious girl with a knack for machinery, is known for hiding away in an old abandoned pie factory for weeks at a time. Very peppy and bright, loves a challenge, and does odd repair jobs around Dulcie.
Angel Cake: An artist, a perfectionist, and a very well-mannered girl from uptown Big Apple, went out to the countryside to escape the loud noise and constant busy atmosphere, so that she'd be able to do her work in peace. Is a bit too dainty for her own good, but really REALLY wants to be friends with the people around her.
Blueberry Muffin: A detective that has a (one-sided) rivalry with Plum Pudding, loves mystery novels and is good at what she does. Tends to analyze things a bit too closely and can't stand being wrong. Easily distracted, gets really absorbed in her books, and loves to teach people—was going to be a newbloom teacher (someone who teaches new Confections about the world) until she found detective work.
Orange Blossom: A quirky girl who likes to approach every problem from a different angle—hence why she brought flowers to a dessert festival. Tries not to show it, but has easily hurt feelings; conversely, she's VERY easy to make friends with. Oversimplifies things sometimes. Her puzzling and outgoing nature is a little offputting to the other Confections (she gets really friendly really fast), and she knows that, but she doesn't understand WHY. She needs a hug.
Plum Pudding: A very organized enby who works as Dulcie's proposal registrar (someone who takes surveys, formats proposals to changes in society, and brings them up for vote), hates not knowing what to plan out, is always on the job even when they're not on the job—they can be on a picnic, sit at a table, and then whip out a notebook to write down plans to have the benches in the park get a maintenance trip. REALLY needs to learn how to relax. Dislikes Blueberry Muffin's disorganized way of doing things.

Going to pitch an idea for a Strawberry Shortcake reboot that’s taken as seriously as My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. It sounds cool in my head, but it’s a very different mood change from the original lighthearted ‘03 and ‘80.

Note
(not into the Shortcakeverse but this is cool so) what would a Link in your Strawberryworld look like/be called?
Pumpkin Cheesecake!
Tumblr media
Link's fondness for pumpkin soup (or stuffed pumpkins, or pumpkin pie—take your pick) plus a reference to Twilight Princess in cheese.
Tumblr media
Pumpkin Cheesecake is a train engineer in Confectia (that's from Spirit Tracks), with fluffy ginger hair that has platinum streaks in it. He's a bit shorter than most Confections, about on par with Plum Pudding, and he wears a button-up amber uniform + gloves and carries a train whistle on his belt.
He's VERY shy, mumbles his words and pulls pulls his hat over his eyes when speaking, and is really easy to make blush.
Now, I don't know if he'll be canon. If the story allows for it, maybe he'll make a cameo. But that's the picture of him I have in my head atm.

Confectionary Life Cycle: Sweet Serendipity Worldbuilding
When a Meadowbloom blossoms for the first time, in early Summer, a newborn Confection falls out of the flower and makes their first steps into the world. These new Confections are called Newblooms; they're composed of stored sunlight, glowing gold until their naming ceremony, and are born wearing a skirt and shawl of Meadowbloom petals.
Newblooms spend the first few months or so of their lives in Newbloom school, where they learn how the world works and are given the tools to figure out what they want to do in life. As Autumn approaches, they start figuring out what sweet thing it is they want to give to the world, and are welcome to anything in the school greenhouse, kitchen, and library in order to make what they want to.
Summer's end is heralded by the Summer Sweet Festival, which has games, dancing, music, and finishes with the Newblooms presenting their sweets to the world and Prince Sunshine making his appearance.
Each Newbloom steps on stage, introduces themselves by what school they're from and what they've brought, says what they hope to be in life, then takes Sunshine's hand and is led off the stage. As they walk, the Prince takes back his sunlight, and the Newbloom is left behind with the human appearance that they most wish for.
When Apple Dumplin' introduces herself and her light fades, she has Strawberry's same hair and cute freckles.
Once every Newbloom has made their introduction, they stand at a buffet table and serve out what they brought to the partygoers—everyone's eager to meet them, so most of their creations are gone within moments. Confections in the profession the Newbloom wants take the opportunity to invite them into apprenticeships. Autumn begins with the newly made Confections settling into their new lives and homes.
And that's how their life kicks off! Everything from that point onward is dependent on their choices—whether they stick with the job they picked, whether they want to move towns, and so on.
It's important to note that Confections don't "grow up;" they don't even have a concept for the phrase. If they really, REALLY want to change how they look to be more comfortable, then they can approach Sunshine to ask to borrow his light, then return it once they've settled on a new appearance. But since they don't ever naturally become adults, there's no drive to change that appearance TO an adult.
But if they don't age, how do they die?
A Confection's lifespan is determined by their memories. The longer they live for and the more memorable things that happen to them, the less space they have for new memories. And when they can no longer remember anything new that happens in their lives, they "fade," vanishing into magic that returns to Confectia to make new Meadowblooms.
How much space a Confection HAS for memories depends on a LOT of factors—how naturally forgetful they are, how strong their flower was, how well they took care of themselves, how much excitement they had in their lives—it's practically impossible to predict how long a given Confection will live for. It is, however, possible to see the early warning signs of a fade: unusually high forgetfulness, zoning out, and glowing softly in the dark.

Ok worldbuilder (sir), what's Confectian government like? You mentioned MLP FIM, so is there royalty like Celestia?
Not exactly.
People in Confectia vote on matters that concern them. For example, accepting a new person into the neighborhood would be a vote between the Confections that live in that neighborhood, while a vote on what to do during a drought would involve the whole town. There are some Confections whose job it is to propose ideas TO be voted on—Plum Pudding is one of those.
As far as leadership goes, all the Confections look up to Prince Sunshine. He's the one that gives the flowers they come from enough magic to grow, and grass springs up wherever he walks. He only lives for a century at a time, though—when that century's up, he fades away, and a new Prince Sunshine takes his place, like a phoenix being reborn as a little chick. With every sun that passes, another star appears in the night sky.
He doesn't hold any actual ruling power—votes still come first. But the Confections love him enough that they'll respect more or less whatever wishes he has.
