new insane ronance analysis for your viewing
so i was watching the season 4 v2 finale, as one does, when i recognized some background music that appeared in a possible significant way. after playing the scene, the song, and looking it up, i was right in guessing that the track was from the score of season 3, and entitled “Tammy”. It appears in these 3 episodes: (look under the cut for theory this is kinda long)
Tumblr media
first of all, tammy and nancy are already sort of connected, and if you don’t believe me, read this analysis that put it better than i could
in the first, its in the bathroom during Robin’s coming out scene, specifically the part where she admits she had a crush on Tammy. Okay, cool. ALSO OF NOTE: Nancy is mentioned twice in this scene. Once, before the song plays, during the track “You’re a Fighter”, which specifically appeared in a scene about Nancy’s place in the world (her mom gives her a pep talk about the horrible old dudes at the paper). Steve mentions he was in love with her once. The next time, while Tammy is playing, Robin says she isn’t like Nancy Wheeler. (These statements deserve their own analysis, as the “she’s such a priss” statement was later disproven and robin’s view on nancy changed, perhaps giving way to possible subtext about robin and nancy being similar in the sense of queerness, which was the theme highlighted in robin’s coming out scene as a given) Okay, so Nancy, in a scene about coming out, has a noticeable impact despite not being there physically.
In the next scene, in the next episode: Joyce talks to Will and says he’l be fine with Johnathan. Keep the fact that he is mentioned in mind. Also while the song is still playing, Hopper tries to get El to be careful. She responds by saying “I’m a fighter.” So, in both scenes so far, the idea of a fighter is mentioned. This brings about the idea of identity and Nancy Wheeler herself, as both are tied to the song’s original appearance.
for the final scene it appears in: nancy and johnathan catch up, still dance around certain topics, etc etc. first off i would like to point ou the interesting decision that is to have them hammer things in, while johnathan lies about his college status, perhaps alluding to a “nail in the coffin” when it comes to their relationship. also to point out: steve is mentioned here was well, described as having grown up. nancy also mentions being sort of glad johnathan wasnt there over spring break, before saying it was so mike had someone to watch out for him, but you can connect the dots that that is only a half truth given that the later statement was hastily tacked on. In this scene, nancy, as opposed to being subtextually connected to scenes, is actually in it.
Now, together, what does all of this mean? First, we must acknowledge that the song ultimately refers to unrequited love given it’s placement in the scene it appeared in. So, j//ancy or st//ancy endgame then, right?? Or at least no ronance, right??? Wrong. You see, in the original Steve + Robin + Tammy + Nancy scenario, Robin had a crush on Tammy, but Tammy didn’t like her because she liked Steve, and he didn’t like her because he was with Nancy. So, four people, the outcome is two people in a relationship and two people burned.
What does this look like now? Currently, we would have Nancy + Johnathan + Steve + Robin. How can I prove that Robin is the one who will end up with Nancy according to this theory? Spread over three scenes, Steve and Jonathan both appear in one significantly and are mentioned in another. All scenes include both Nancy and Robin in subtextually ways, such as mentions, the whole “fighter” thing, and the fact that Tammy is ultimately a Robin song, just as You’re a Fighter is a Nancy song. This matches as both also are scenes surrounding one’s place in the world, especially in the face of adversity (sexism and homophobia discussed respectively for Nancy and Robin). It starts with a full Robin appearance, and ends with a Nancy one. Not only are they omnipresent, they also come full circle- a well rounded relationship.
Comparatively, Nancy and Robin would be Nancy and Steve, while Steve and Johnathan would take the spot of the originally rebuffed: Tammy and Robin.
Now, if we are comparing Nancy and Robin to Nancy and Steve, doesn’t this mean that even if they do get together, they will break up? No, this analysis/theory only deals in the whole getting together thing, while Nancy and Robin have proven in separate threads of both text and subtext that they generally work better as a duo and therefore a couple, and don’t fall to the same inevitable pitfalls as Steve and Nancy (Nancy and Robin have similar dreams, are willing to alter their first impressions on eachother, listen, etc etc wheras Steve and Nancy will always be haunted relationship wise by Barb and directly conflicting plans for the future, as in screw suburbua, i want independence vs six nuggets suburbia). TL;DR, this does provide evidence for Nancy and Robin getting together, but not staying together; however that does not negate the existence of evidence that proves that they could indeed be a healthy couple that does stay together.
To conclude: musical cues, known to be important subtext in Stranger Things historically, points to signs of Ronance endgame. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk

They had no reason to not reveal which scene it was from. I think they just put themselves in a corner by first admitting it’s one of their favorites songs. There was no way they could follow that with, “so we used it for Will & Mike.” 🤫👀😅🤣

i know it’s been a while since my analysis but it’s still absolutely fucking wild to me that the song “being different” is a combination of the first lie and the first i love you, and LITERALLY plays during will’s first lie and first i love you to mike.
like what the fuck. combining songs from seasons 2 and 3?? that played in situations that work for the context of byler?? that display a deep level of care and attention to detail over the seasons for a pairing that may well be not only the endgame of the show but also the pairing that perfectly displays the overall message of the show? that our differences are what make us unique, and it is love in all its forms that make our differences so important? that amongst all the chaos and hatred in the world, two childhood friends falling in love is not the (forgive me) strangest thing that could ever happen? it’s just so…. wow.
with what the duffers have been saying about season 4, that it’s them “peeling back the layers” and “showing their hand” to the audience, all of this just makes so much sense. it’s going to be really beautiful to watch this story come to fruition. i’m so excited :’)

the original score x byler
season 1 (1/3)
1x01 “Kids”
Tumblr media
this song begins right as will throws a fireball in the opening d n d game. it continues as the kids leave mike’s house and go home. will shows his honesty and loyalty towards mike as this plays while he reveals that his roll was indeed a 7. this emphasizes will and mike’s relationship with each other in comparison to the rest of the party. they’re all best friends, but mike and will have something different. this is also the catalyst into the mind frame that being a kid and playing d n d is an analogy and representative of the relationship these two share. byler’s first shown to the audience with “Kids” playing. (this will be a mini-series)

Music In Stranger Things
and how it is used to queer-code Mike and Will
Music is integral to what makes the show so great and both the soundtrack and original score is used throughout every season to sometimes parallel scenes or imply things about the characters or plot
OST
The First I love You
This piece first plays in season 3 episode 7, during the scene in the bathroom where Steve confesses his feelings for Robin and she turns him down and comes out to him as a lesbian (it doesn't start til after the coming out scene, when Steve starts joking around and making fun of Tammy)
Tumblr media
The same piece plays again in the final episode of the season, when the Byers and El are leaving Hawkins to move to California and El talks to Mike, saying she loves him and kissing him. Mike says nothing in response and stands still, eyes open the whole time and has a confused expression on his face afterwards.
Tumblr media
This could imply a parallel between the two scenes; that Mike, like Robin, is gay and can’t love El back the way she wants him to. This is even represented in the title, with ‘love’ being the only word not capitalised to show that it is a different type of love.
In the closet (at Rink O Mania)
I don’t think much more evidence is necessary after this piece, it's literally titled ‘In the closet’. This piece plays during the scene where Will and Mike argue in Rink-O-Mania, after El gets bullied on the rink and Mike is annoyed at Will for not telling him El was being bullied.
While the piece does play into the next scene and the title is literally referring to El hiding from Angela and her friends in a storage closet, it begins during the Mike and Will scene, specifically starting as Mike is talking, implying the double meaning – that Mike is closeted and hiding from his own feelings.
Tumblr media
Being Different & You’re The Heart
The piece that plays in the van scene is called ‘Being Different’ (referencing Will’s line about how when you’re different, sometimes you feel like a mistake).
‘You’re the Heart’ plays in the scene with Mike’s monologue to El in the final episode. I find it interesting that this specific piece is titled ‘You’re the Heart’, a Will line, rather than something Mike says to El in the scene, like ‘I Love You’ or ‘You’re My Superhero’. This kind of leads us to think Mike wasn’t being entirely honest with El and is actually just repeating a lot of what Will said the episode prior to cover up the truth.
What’s interesting about these two pieces is they both feel like they’re missing something, much like how the scenes themselves aren’t entirely what they seem (Will talking about himself but not saying it and instead lying that it’s about El, and Mike talking about how much he loves El, covering up the fact he feels their relationship is falling apart and that his feelings may not be genuine).
I first found this next part on tiktok (@causeineedu) and I think it’s such an interesting detail. If you play both tracks, and scenes, so that they end at the same time, the music actually completes itself and is really beautiful. It would be really cool if both pieces together was a new piece in s5 used in a significant byler scene. The scenes the tracks are used in also parallel to show the truth of Mike’s feelings when synced up, the tiktok linked goes into a lot more detail on that and it's really cool so go check it out (also that whole account is amazing)
Soundtrack
Heroes – David Bowie (cover by Peter Gabriel)
Probably one of the most recognised songs used in the show, Heroes is a song about two lovers who are under constant fear of death dreaming that they are free, and is very queercoded.
The Peter Gabriel cover has been used twice throughout the show in pivotal moments:
1. Will’s fake body is found in the quarry at the end of 1x03 – this scene is primarily from Mike’s POV and the song is inherently romantic, especially the lyrics that play when he gets home after biking back in tears and hugs his mom:
“And the guns
Shot above our heads
And we kissed
As though nothing could fall
And the shame”
"And the guns shot above our heads” could reference the bullying they face for being gay (Troy and James do mostly bully Will but they also direct it at Mike more than Dustin or Lucas, as if taunting him as well).
“And we kissed as though nothing could fall” could reference the strength of their relationship before Will went missing; they were inseparable, and even if they never kissed beforehand, this line would still represent that.
"And the shame” references both Mike’s internalised homophobia and the stigma around being queer in the 80s, and how neither Mike nor Will would be comfortable admitting their feelings for fear of attack.
Tumblr media
2. The second time the song is used it in the final scene of season 3 as El and the Byers move away, after El reads Hoppers letter.
The song is reused to parallel to the first scene, mostly to hint that while everyone believes Hopper is dead, he survived, much like how everyone thought Will was dead in 1x03
While the song doesn't play over the exact scene, Hoppers letter does, the repeated use of the song also brings the direct parallel of Mike returning home and hugging his mom, but he doesn’t cry or let out much emotion this time. I think this is the moment he truly realised how much he loves Will and the internalised homophobia really started to hit and he doesn’t think he can be emotional about Will leaving without 'being caught'.
The lines of Hoppers letter that do play over the hug scene do also reflect how Mike is feeling:
"I don't want things to change. So maybe that's why I came in here - to try to maybe stop that change. To turn back the clock. To make things go back to how they were."
Mike wants to go back to when he didn't know about his feelings for Will, because that would have been a lot easier. He doesn't want their friendship to change.
Tumblr media
The next bit isn't exactly in the show but...
Mike’s Spotify Playlist
Mike's official playlist, Mike's Bassment Beats, contains a lot of musical hints that Mike might be queer, even from the very first song.
The first song on the playlist is Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat, which was described as a ‘cry for gay liberation’ when it was released in 1984 and was about how many queer men had to flee small towns due to the intolerance and homophobia.
Season 2 of the show was set in 1984 and I think this is when Mike developed a crush on Will, even if he didn’t fully realise it then. He was a lot more protective of him that season, rightfully so after season one, but he was always there right by his side, somewhat separated from people like Dustin and Lucas when it came to Will, implying their relationship was different.
The lyrics:
“Pushed around and kicked
Around, always a lonely boy
You were the one that they’d
Talk about around town as they
Put you down
And as hard as they would try,
They’d hurt to make you cry
But you never cried to them”
These lyrics can actually apply to both Mike and Will quite easily.
“Pushed around and kicked around” represents the bullying they face, mostly Will, from kids at school like Troy and James, and even his own father Lonnie.
"Always a lonely boy" represents them both, they've always been the outcasts, the loners. Mike specifically mentions he was all alone before he met Will in kindergarten.
“You never cried to them” is a very Mike line, representing how after season 2, he started to realise his actual feelings and pushed them down, suppressing his emotions until they got too much and were forced out, like during the rain breakup in 3x03 where he absolutely projects onto will with the "it's not my fault you don't like girls" line.
The 11th song on the playlist is Don’t You Want Me by The Human League and was originally on the playlist with a cover from a ‘Celebrate Gay Pride’ album (Steve also has this song on his playlist but the original album cover so this was very likely intentional). Since, however, it has been changed to the original, perhaps to be more subtle.
One song on the playlist is Are ‘Friends’ Electric?’ by Tubeway Army. The lyrics themselves aren't intentionally queercoded but the title and in the context of Mike's character they are. Electricity is mentioned a couple of times in season 2 to allude to a romantic relationship; Steve tells Dustin that once you feel the electricity you know something is going on between two people, and Dustin then tells Lucas he can feel the electricity between him and Max (one of the main couples that have always paralleled Mike and Will).
Some songs on the playlist could link to hiding in the closet, such as Cars by Gary Numan:
“Here in my car
I feel safest of all
I can lock all my doors
It’s the only way to live in cars”
The car represents the closet and how Mike is hiding from his own self and who he really is behind his ‘straight boy’ cover act - the closet is safe for him as it hides him from the reaction of the real world.
Many other songs on the playlist are about running away:
I Ran (So Far Away) by A Flock of Seagulls
Running in the Night by FM-84 + Ollie Wride
Destination Unknown by Missing Persons
Run Away by International Music System
These could all be metaphors for Mike running away from his own feelings and identity out of fear, or even running from his parents and their reactions, specifically his dad's - Ted has made a couple of homophobic micro-aggressions throughout the seasons, mostly in season 1.
Mike's playlist overall is really interesting as so many of the songs could be linked to his feelings about his sexuality and running away from himself.
The next point is also not entirely in the show itself, but links to a set piece.
Will’s Vecna Song – Theory
Although Should I Stay or Should I Go by The Clash has been a song associated with him since season 1, I don’t think it would be the song that would save him from Vecna. He probably has a lot of trauma from it as it is what he kept singing when he was stuck in the Upside Down. While it is linked to happy memories and Jonathan distracting him from his parents’ fighting, it has always also been linked to the negativity and trauma in Will’s life.
Instead, I think Will’s Vecna song would be Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure.
For starters, he has a poster for the song on his bedroom wall in season 4 (visible in the first scene he’s in when he’s painting in 4x01) so we know he at least likes it.
Tumblr media
He would probably like the song so much as he'd relate to it a lot:
“I try to laugh about it
Cover it all up with lies
I try to laugh about it
Hiding the tears in my eyes
‘Cause boys don’t cry
Boys don’t cry”
These lyrics would specifically fit one particular scene that is key to Will and Mike’s relationship in season 4 – when he admits his feelings to Mike in the back of the van but uses El’s name (“cover it all up with lies”), to help Mike in his struggle with his and El’s relationship. He turns and looks out of the window so Mike can’t see him crying (“hiding the tears in my eyes ‘cause boys don’t cry”)
Tumblr media
The song could also link very clearly to Mike’s character too. He is also “covering it all up with lies” as his whole relationship with El is covering up his true feelings for Will, and he also pushes down all his emotions so he doesn’t have to open up to anyone.
Tumblr media
Another reason I think this would be the song that would save Will from Vecna is the lyrics have similar ties to his trauma as the lyrics of Running Up that Hill have to Max's. Max relates to Running Up that Hill as she feels guilty about Billy's death and wishes she could go back and rewrite that day. It's the thing that makes her hate herself. The thing that makes Will hate himself the most is his sexuality and his feelings for Mike, which the lyrics would reflect; him knowing he can't open up about how he really feels out of fear of both rejection and being attacked, as well as the thought of truly losing Mike, even as his friend.
There are so many more examples of music being used to queercode these two characters and I'll add onto this if I find any more but this post is really long anyway so ill stop 😭

“Boys and Girls” playing when El calls Mike in season 3
Why the title? Unless it plays during a different scene in s3 as well? I feel like it might two different meanings for being placed there? Idk I need opinions and takes on this

In a surprising turn of events, it was Will that got Steve and Eddie together. He’d noticed their blushing gazes, stilted flirting, and lingering touches. He knew they must’ve been dating in secret from their friends, perhaps because they weren’t comfortable enough to tell anyone. So, he pulled them aside at one of Steve’s pool days and gave them some advice.
“Hey guys, I um. Look, I know you’re dating each other.” They looked at each other in panic but Will continued. “It’s fine, I didn’t tell anyone. But you can tell us when you’re comfortable. The whole Party will be supportive and it’s really inspiring to see the love you two have for each other. So uh, thanks. I’m happy for you guys.”
Will ignored their shocked pallor and pulled them each into a quick hug. He gave them one last smile and darted back outside to the pool party feeling good that he was able to congratulate his friends for something so important.
Unknowingly to him, he left Steve and Eddie inside to deal with impromptu coming-outs, small crises, and plans for first dates. Because before that conversation, neither Steve nor Eddie realized the other was interested.
So Will got them together and he was proud when he found out about it… until they did the same thing to him and Mike. Then his joy about the situation became horror (although the method did work once again).

I couldn’t get my earlier post out of my head, and then this happened so… I hope you enjoy a little famous!Eddie and dingus!Steve ficlet (ft platonic soulmate Stobin)
Part one | part two | part three
Steve and Robin had lived in Indy all of their lives. They shared the same schools, same teachers, same jobs, it would never end. They were platonic soulmates in a way they understood but couldn’t explain to anyone else, and that was okay. It worked for them.
Since they graduated, they’d been ice cream scoopers, movie rental employees, pizza makers, delivery drivers, movie theater security, bartenders, and now - surprisingly - musicians.
They had originally started messing around with song covers during their bartending era. Every Thursday was karaoke night, and they were both too competitive to see it as anything other than a chance to win, both trying to upstage the other. After a while, Steve started writing songs in his free time and Robin wouldn’t let anyone but her sing them. She posted their songs on Tiktok and Instagram just to see what would happen, and eventually they made their way onto Spotify and other streaming services.
A few of their songs went viral enough that they had a steady stream of listeners, and spent their free time putting more and more songs together. Their boss even let them play live at the bar on Wednesdays (and of course they’re still just as passionate about karaoke night).
It was a few months into their Wednesday shows when he showed up. Eddie Munson. It was just another bar in Indy, just a stop on their tour, just a coincidence that he happened to choose Robin and Steve’s bar. Steve noticed him during their set, and he was so glad in that moment that Robin was the lead singer because he was absolutely sure his voice would have cracked. Corroded Coffin was one of Dustin’s favorite bands, the kid wouldn’t shut up about them any time a new album or single was released.
Steve knew they were in Indy on tour, he’d witnessed Dustin’s spiral about not being able to afford a ticket, but he couldn’t believe they stopped in this bar. Dustin was gonna freak.
Once Robin and Steve finished their set, they went back to the bar to resume their actual jobs and Steve was once again stunned when Eddie Munson walked right up to him for a drink. Obviously Steve should have expected that, what else was someone going to do at a bar? But seeing someone he knows from the multiple posters plastered over Dustin’s bedroom wall, right in front of him - in the flesh, was beyond anything he could have predicted. Internally, he was absolutely freaking out.
Externally, he tried to keep his professional mask on. Munson was a regular customer, just a guy buying a drink, Steve could handle it without a meltdown. But man was the guy attractive. His band tee was ripped at the hem, jean vest with all its pins and buttons catching the light, and Steve could see the tendon in his neck pull as he laughed at something his band mate next to him said. Steve wanted to bite it.
He finished a customer’s drink, collected their card, and braced himself as Munson stepped up to the bar, a dimpled smile on his face that made Steve’s heart flutter like a dying butterfly in his chest.
“Nice set, man, your friend’s voice is gorgeous,” he said. “Can I get three rum and cokes?”
Grabbing three glasses from the bar, Steve began on the drinks. “Absolutely,” he said, his smile probably nowhere near Eddie’s level. “Are you here often, or just visiting?” Steve asked, attempting to play it cool, like Eddie was just any other person. This is ridiculous, Steve’s gonna throw up. Keep calm.
Eddie looked him up and down and smirked, “Just visiting for the weekend,” he said. A growing lump in Steve’s throat made him want to scream ‘I know!!! I know why you’re here!!! I know who you are!!! Hi!!!’ but he shoved that down as far as it could go, ready to choke on it if need be.
Steve set the finished drinks on the bar in front of Eddie, the musician handing over his card in exchange. “Open or closed?” He asked.
“Open. So, are those songs originals?” Eddie leaned into the bar, putting his face just a bit closer to Steve’s. He was gonna have a heart attack before the night was over, for sure, if Eddie kept this up.
“Oh, yeah, I uh… I wrote them,” Steve stuttered out. This was insane, he could pinch himself, there was no way this situation was happening. Eddie was gorgeous, dimples firmly in place because he wouldn’t stop smiling or smirking, his curls just begging for Steve to bury his hands in them and bring their faces closer. If Steve hadn’t been on the receiving end of hundreds of Dustin’s rants about Corroded Coffin, he knows he’d still want to drag Eddie out back and see what those lips tasted like, if they felt as much like sunshine as they looked.
Eddie nodded appreciatively and looked Steve up and down once again. “I’d love to hear more some time,” he said as he turned to leave, three glasses balanced in his hands.
“Well there’s karaoke here tomorrow night,” Steve blurted out, all attempts at remaining calm flying out the window because was that Eddie flirting with him? How did we get here? “You could stop by if you’ve got any free time.”
Eddie laughed, amusement flickering in his eyes and suddenly Steve remembered chasing fireflies in Robin’s backyard when they were kids. He started walking backwards towards his friends, “I’ll see what I can do!” he said with a raised voice, flashing one more smile that made that butterfly in Steve’s chest absolutely flip out. He was frozen in place, the shock of the whole situation settling deep in his bones. Honestly, Steve wasn’t sure he was still alive. Did he choke somewhere between the stage and the bar? Did he even make it to work in the first place? What day was it?
“Earth to Dingus!” Robin shouted at the other end of the bar. “A little help here?” she frantically gestured around her to the rising number of patrons.
A pretty decently sized mob was forming around the bar, snapping Steve out of his rock-star-induced-coma. He could freak out later in the privacy of his own home, right now he had work to do. And if his brain short circuited every time Eddie ordered drinks, that was nobody’s business but his own (and Robin’s).
Thank you so much for the encouragement !

Same score.
I know it might seem like a stretch to assume this was intentional.
However, I do find it interesting that this score plays while Mike reunites with El at the airport in 4x02, only for it to cut out instantly afterwards as Mike is reuniting with Will.
And in the scene in 2x01, outside of the middle school, Mike is annoyed with the other three over their interest in Max. This same score then creeps in as the boys look at each other, before they start running curiously towards whatever Max threw in the garbage, and with Mike running after them. While the score continues, Mike waves along with the other boys as a few girls walk passed them.
Basically the only parallel I can find between these two scenes is Mike waving awkwardly at girls…

I think Mike and Will’s first kiss should be in a quiet moment with little to no stakes — just a gentle, yet emotional, “hey, I want you to know how I feel” kind of moment. I think it would really showcase how different their relationship is from Mike and Eleven’s because Mike’s big, romantic moments with her tend to be dire or frustrating. His love for Will has never been like that. Sure, there have been dire circumstances, but even in those moments, love was soft and unprompted.

the original score x byler
season 3 (2/3)
3x03 “Ruins”
Tumblr media
though this song is mainly used for plot-heavy purposes dealing with the upside down and other antagonists, i think it’s significant that it plays while mike is knocking on will’s door, (crawling back and begging hehe). the vibe of this track feels very s3 in the way it has fun little synth noises sounding in it! it starts playing while hopper is investigating the noise he heard and we get the shot of him cocking his gun in shadow. then, it cuts to down pouring rain outside and bike tires leaving imprints through mud. kyle and michael chose the title ‘ruins’ and all it gets me thinking about is what the state of castle byers is going to be like by the end of the episode. i believe it also symbolizes the state of mike and will’s relationship by this point. the song draws suspense as we, the audience, do not know where will is yet either. mike and lucas are pounding on his doors and windows only for no one to be home. i can’t imagine what was going through mike’s mind in this scene, because will left from his garage alone just like ep 1, and he’s not able to find him.
