The best places to feed your hunger for pasta porn
Tumblr media
Sadly, there's a cap on how much pasta a person can safely ingest in one day. Thankfully, there's not a limit to how much digital pasta content a person could hypothetically consume.
The internet gives us boring internet drama, but it also graces us with infinite pasta content. The epicurean pasta content consumer needs to be selective about what goes into their feed. They can't just follow any old food Instagram or recipe blog.
They need to follow the internet's best pasta content creators.
SEE ALSO: Never cook soggy pasta again thanks to this cheap kitchen gadget
Below is a list of some of the best places to find pasta erotica on the internet. You don't need to know how to make pasta in order to enjoy these sites. You can be someone who just enjoys the aesthetics of pasta, its global history, or how good it tastes microwaved in BPA-free Tupperware the next day.
Pasta Grannies

YouTube channel Pasta Grannies features older Italian women making their original pasta recipes in their own homes. Who doesn't want to watch 95-year-old women make macaroni? The channel currently boasts over 373,000 subscribers.

Missy Robbins is considered one of New York's premiere pasta chefs and her most famous restaurant, Lilia, is one of Instagram's most premiere pasta accounts. It's not exclusively a pasta-based account, but it does feature some heavenly dishes, including this one involving mafaldini, pink peppercorn, and parmesan:

Langoustine Mac & Cheese
Note to self: Stop editing and copy/pasting things in the middle of the night. I am so exhausted, you guys.
Tumblr media
Known as the Dublin Bay prawn or Norway lobster, the langoustine is not a lobster but close relative that lives primarily in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. The flavor is sweet but more delicate in texture than the lobster although its just as meaty. I like langoustines better than lobster, crab or shrimp simply because of the flavor and texture. Putting it in mac and cheese however, is something I’ve never done before. I’ve made lobster mac and cheese, and the meat holds up well, but I figured I would give langoustines a try. They ended up having the perfect amount of sweetness that compliments the saltiness of the cheese. Because they’re easy to cook, the langoustine does really well as a textural contrast against the pasta without the rubberiness you can sometimes get with lobster if it’s not cooked correctly.
Tumblr media
Go ahead and try this dish for lunch or dinner one day. Your mouth hole will thank you.
For 8 servings (adapted from Ina Garten/Barefoot Contessa):
1 lb. cavatappi
4 c. milk
6 tbsp. butter, divided
1/2 c. all-purpose flour
4 c. grated Gruyere cheese
2 1/4 c. grated white cheddar cheese
1/2 tbsp. salt
1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1 lb. cooked langoustine meat
1/2 c. seasoned bread crumbs
Preheat the oven to 375F.
Drizzle oil into a large pot of boiling salted water. Cook cavatappi until al dente, according to package directions. Shock with cold water and then drain well; set aside/
Heat the milk in a small saucepan until simmer. Meanwhile, in a large pot, melt 6 tablespoons of butter over low heat; continuously stir mixture with a whisk while slowly adding in flour. Continually whisking, add the hot milk. Whisk and cook for about 1-2 minutes, until it is thickened and smooth.
Remove creamy mixture from heat and cheese, 1/2 tablespoon salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Add the cooked cavatappi and lobster; gently stir well. Place the mixture in 8 individual gratin dishes. Sprinkle seasoned bread crumb on the top.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

29 Pop-Ups To Know About Right Now added to Google Docs
29 Pop-Ups To Know About Right Now
The way we eat in San Francisco has changed dramatically over the past few months - and with all of the constant shifts and uncertainty, restaurants and chefs have had to get creative. Tons of pop-ups have, well, popped up, in the Bay Area recently, especially as we adjust to a more takeout-focused lifestyle. From bottomless wings to cheesy, gooey pupusas, here are 29 pop-ups that you should know about right now.
THE POP-UP SPOTS  Reed Davis Eko Kitchen $$$$ 130 Townsend St
Last year, Eko Kitchen became SF’s first and only Nigerian restaurant. And after a fire burned down their commercial kitchen in July, they’ve since moved operations to Merkado’s space in SoMa. The menu at Eko Kitchen changes, but they have combo meals, which include things like smoky jollof rice, chicken with roasted pepper sauce, gizdodo, and puff puffs, available to-go every Sunday. You can use apps for delivery, or place an order for pick-up by phone or online.
Popoca $$$$ 411 26th St
The Uptown Oakland pop-up serves excellent Salvadoran food - pupusas, enchiladas, and trout smoked over a comal - out of Classic Cars West Beer Garden. They’ve also got a “dinner for two” (it comes with four pupusas and sides), and pints of escabeche, beans, and hot sauce to-go. They’re open Wednesday to Saturday from 5:30-9pm.

Miguelito’s $$$$ 2000 Hyde St
From Wednesday to Sunday, Abrazo in Russian Hill is hosting a pop-up called Miguelito’s. They’re selling charred octopus tacos with chorizo aioli and citrus slaw, carne asada street tacos, carnitas, chicken, elotes, and more out of Abrazo’s side door on Union Street. And if you want an extra kick, ask for their house-made habanero salsa, which they’re selling by the bottle.

Come check out the new Mexican Pop-Up, located at the side door of Abrazo restaurant on Union@Hyde in Russian Hill. #sfrestaurants #eatsf #eatthissf #ieatsf #eatlocal #russianhillsf #hydhydestreet #sfchefs #sffoodie #sffood #eatersf #sfchronicle #sffoodies #nomnom #eaaats #foodgasm #bestofsf #russianhillsanfrancisco #foodofsf #sfdining #popup #sftogo #sanfranciscofoodie #sanfranciscofood #covid19 #bayareaeats #bayareagoodfood #bayareafood #abrazosf

Malibu's Burgers $$$$ 3905 Piedmont Ave
In July, the pop-up spot for massive vegan burgers, sandwiches, and milkshakes secured a brick-and-mortar location on Piedmont Avenue. And since their truck is temporarily out of commission, they’ll continue operating as a pop-up until they open their store permanently (hopefully, in the next couple of months). You can find updates, current hours, and location on their Instagram. And look out for their next pop-up on August 31st at the vegan café Timeless Coffee.

It’s hot, here’s a burger we devoured and quickly ran away from our kitchen. Tried @miyokoscreamery cheddar for the first time. It was really good.
A post shared by Malibu’s Burgers (@malibusburgers) on Aug 15, 2020 at 5:57pm PDT
Raphael Latrache Beretta Pop-Up $$$$ 661 Divisadero St
Our favorite Italian spot in the Mission for small plates and cocktails is now on Divisadero, and offering outdoor dining and Happy Hour specials every day. So if you’re in NoPa and are suddenly hit with the all-consuming need for burrata, right now, you’re in luck. They’re taking brunch and Happy Hour reservations online, and also have a waitlist for dinner.
Al Pastor Papi Al Pastor Papi $$$$ 601 Mission Bay Blvd N
If (and by if, we mean when) you’re in desperate need of some al pastor, check Al Pastor Papi’s Instagram to see where their truck is at. The location changes every day, but they’re typically around SF. If, by some miraculous force, you don’t want al pastor, they’ve also got carne asada, chicken, and nopales - all of which you can get in tacos, open-faced quesadillas, burritos, or bowls.
The Vegan Hood Chefs The Vegan Hood Chefs $$$$
Since 2017, The Vegan Hood Chefs have been bringing plant-based soul food to SF, and healthier options to local Black and brown communities that have historically lacked access. They’re mostly catering right now, but are occasionally popping up at community events and breweries. The menu varies, but expect to see things like lobster mac and cheese, oyster po’boys, or sweet potato and black bean tacos. Check their Instagram for pop-up updates, or head to their website if you want to place a catering order.
 Chancho's Chancho's $$$$
The team behind Low Bar, a new cocktail bar that’s put its opening on pause due to the pandemic, recently launched a Mexican pop-up called Chancho’s. The current lineup includes: Kona’s Night Market, Smuggler’s Cove, Wildhawk, Sea Star, and California Gold, in that order. Head to Whitechapel’s Instagram for updates.

Mostly offering fresh seafood, the best Floria Keys restaurants are focusing on sustainability and, obviously, key lime pie
1. Café Marquesa
This restaurant in the Marquesa Hotel, which just added a stunning 14-room annex a skosh down Simonton onto its already bespoke bedrooms, has long been one of the swankiest spots in town. Still, even the elegant climes of this upscale staple were ripe for a refresh, which has come in the form of Iron Chef alum Graham Daily, who cut his culinary teeth at Charleston’s famed Peninsula Grill. He’s brought some of that South Carolina flavor with him, too, in the form of crispy local yellowtail snapper on parmesan grits and seared sea scallops with a bit of spicy Andouille sausage, but Marquesa classics like seared duck breast and high-flavor ribeye are still in regular rotation.
2. Bien
Although it’s blocks off the main drag on the northern edge of Old Town, it’s hard not to notice this former gas station painted in shades of pale pink with splashes of turquoise and fuchsia. Put your arrange at the small indoor counter and grab a spot at one of the slender rectangular tables outside where cars used to fill up beneath the tolerant sirs (to assist check that southernmost warm and humidity) for decadent marinated, slow-roasted pork sandwiches stacked with pickled jalapenos, caramelized onions and garlic mayo that will forever change you. Order it on a tortilla if you like, but the plush Cuban bread option is where it’s at.
3. Lost Kitchen
Now that Uber has come to the land of conch, getting out of Old Town isn’t such a swim upstream, but it might make this in-the-know, reservations-only dockside supper club a hard ticket to score in short time. Sign up for the monthly mailing list and you’ll get a proper heads-up on local chef Martin Liz’s giddy, delicious exploration of the world in themed menus – think the flavors of the Mexican Yucatan, for example – or dive into balanced aromas of Indian Thali.
4. Little Pearl
In the modest space that once housed Seven Fish (which moved to Eaton Street), enchanted two-year-old Little Pearl is the kind of spot that feels at once like a special-occasion treat and somewhere you want to be all the time. Owners Tommy Quartararo and Kristen Onderdonk followed the successful compass of their sister spot, Thirsty Mermaid, with fresh flavors and techniques that let them shine. But where the lovely Mermaid floats along on a casual wave, the Pearl shines like a precious stone. Start with the seared, tender Bangkok octopus curled around a posey of mung beans, mint, basil and cilantro and gently draped in a coconut-chili sauce, or take a cue from the eatery’s name and order the baked oysters with bright pickled onion, mustard seed and wilted greens. The sufficient shrimp on stone ground grits with savory, salty lardon and a buerre blanc sauce is sigh-worthy, but you might need to order an additional crab, shrimp and lobster pot pie to spoon into at home after you find yourself thinking about it in the center of the night.
5. Nine One Five
Nine One Five is known for its forward-thinking menu of Asian-influenced flavors (think Thai curries, Sichuan peppers and vibrant basil oil), but it’s also a great option for vegetarians who grow weary of single, tossed-off menu options: dishes like the Sichuan eggplant and tofu with ginger, cinnamon, garlic and soy will satiate the sensory desires and appetite of carnivores and veggie devotees alike. For a Duval Street spot, it retains a decidedly unchaotic atmosphere, if not a downright romantic one anchored by the white picket fence draped with bougainvillea on premise. Many plates are deemed shareable, and you should share them, but the dreamy house-made pastas, which come in half and full serves, are worth a visit alone.
6. Thirsty Mermaid
Founded by husband-wife duo and longtime Key West restaurateurs Thomas Quartaro and Kristen Onderdonk, Thirsty Mermaid’s prime focus is always good ingredients, well highlighted in their bright, fresh seafood-heavy menu, where oysters and daily-changing ceviche are a must and dishes like the cool-you-down green gazpacho with a dollop of crème fraiche are well-complemented by the think-outside-the-Sauvignon-Blanc wine list and nicely curated craft beers. The driftwood-gray floors and white walls, inadequately decorated in nautical antiques and modern sea-skewed art, permeate a casual, breezy kind of sophistication in which you're feeling completely comfortable tipping back a flute of bubbly in your beach cover-up.
7. Bad Boy Burrito
Really, the name is kind of a misnomer: there’s nothing bad about the fresh, organic ingredients at Bad Boy Burrito. Heap on the house-made salsas and toppings like pickled red onion escabeche and ancho chili relish because it’s all about building your own “phattie” with meat and veggie options including kobe-beef, duck confit or Key West pink shrimp. The taco trio is also a good choice, as well as the variety of salads, entrées, smoothies and juices on offer. Best of all, most items on the menu hover around $10.
8. Pepe’s
Established in 1909, Pepe’s – with its white wooden fence with peephole cut-outs, funky brick courtyard and massive hand-juicer pumping out fresh lime juice for some of the best margaritas in town – has been doing things right for over 100 years. From fresh fish sandwiches with a side of al dente mac salad to truly excellent key lime pie (ask and they will gladly give you the recipe), Pepe’s is the kind of place that feels like your regular go-to even if it’s your first visit.
9. BlackFin Bistro
The less-is-more casual vibe at Blackfin, with its white-on-wood banquettes and the work of Keys artists on the wall, makes it a perennial favorite among locals and tourists alike, but it’s their excellent fresh-catch sandwiches, hand-cut fries and great fish tacos that make this a spot to return to over and over. They serve both brunch and dinner every day and, if the climate permits, the palm frond-framed back courtyard could be a tasty respite when the Key West blue sky is in full splendor.
10. 5 Brothers Grocery and Sandwich Shop
Stop into this corner Key West staple on Southard Street for a hot, hardy cup of café con leche or, if you’re on your way to an off-shore fishing excursion, for the famed Cuban sandwich.Because if you have got to decide on a bit of Key West to wait on your senses, pickles, pork, ham and cheese on oh-so-soft Cuban bread is just about the best choice you can make.

10 Top Weight Loss Tips For Women
As a woman in today’s society, I’m aware that there’s this constant pressure for us to not only look good, but feel good. We all want to feel confident, and from one woman to another, I want you to feel just as confident as I want to feel myself. If you’re like the majority of women, part of feeling confident is learning to love your body on the outside, as well as in. This may include losing weight, so we’ve compiled a list of the 10 top weight loss tips for women to help you reach your goals.
Despite the fitness world’s motivation, inspiration, and love and support for one another (especially on social media), it’s still difficult for us women to lose weight. It’s difficult, but not impossible. You can lose weight, look good, and feel good with these weight loss tips.
These tips are especially designed to help women who are craving that all-too-common feeling of “Wow, I look good”. Each and every woman out there can implement these tips into their daily lives easily. And, if followed, each and every woman out there can look and feel as good as the next. Follow these 10 Top Weight Loss Tips For Women and show them to your friends so that they, too, can feel confident and accomplished!
Tip #1: Start small
Have you ever gone on a diet and put everything you had into following that diet only to find that you’ve fallen off the bandwagon after only a week? So many of us have been there and done that, so you are not alone. Want to know the reason for that constant falling off of the bandwagon?
Well, the reason is simple. Diets force us to start off too big. We restrict ourselves far too much and when our cravings can’t hold off any longer, we give into them–and we don’t give in lightly. Before you know it, we’re on our kitchen floor with a double cheeseburger, French fries, and a large milkshake after a full week of eating straight salads.
Just like the reason, the solution is simple. Start small. You’re much more likely to stick to a clean eating plan when you’re filling yourself up with foods that are healthy, yet full of flavor. The same goes for exercising. You don’t have to run seven miles your first day of working out. Start out with walking for 30 minutes a day. When that doesn’t get your heart rate up enough, move on to jogging. Then, when you’re ready for something more intense, move onto something like weight lifting.
Tip #2: Make your favorite foods healthier
This is one of my favorite top weight loss tips for women because it means that we don’t necessarily have to say “goodbye” to our favorite foods. Before parting ways with them for good, try making them healthier. Here, at SkinnyMs, we take pride in making normally unhealthy foods healthier. Eating your favorite foods that are made with nutritious ingredients will help you to stay on track and continue to lose weight–but it will help you to lose it happily.
Check out these recipes to get you started:
Red Lobster’s Cheddar Biscuits
Healthier Olive Garden Garlic Rosemary Chicken
5-Ingredient Instant Pot Mac and Cheese
Bonefish Grill Bang-Bang Shrimp
5-Ingredient Chicken Parmesan
We can be confident, healthy, and HAPPY women losing weight with this top weight loss tip!
Tip #3: Eat slowly
The third item on this list of top weight loss tips for women really speaks to me. Whenever I eat too fast, I find that I also eat too much. The slower you eat, the easier your body and mind will be able to register the fact that you’re full. Once your body and mind alert you that you no longer need any more food to feel satisfied, you’ll stop eating and, therefore, eat less. Eating the correct portion sizes and stopping yourself from feeling overly full will help you to lose weight.
Tip #4: Meal prep
I know that you may very well be a busy woman. You might even use the excuse “I’m too busy” when conversing about losing the weight you want to lose. Well, if that’s the case, then this weight loss tip for women is for you. If that is the case, then hear me out. I’m going to tell you something, woman to woman: There is no such thing as being too busy.
We are all busy bees in one way or another. Plus, the things that you usually don’t think you have time for (like meal prepping) will actually save you time in the long run. By taking time out of one single day a week, you can save yourself tons of time during the other six days of the week.
Plus, meal prepping is worth it when it comes to weight loss. By preparing your meals in advance, the chances of you eating foods that aren’t good for you and could hinder your weight loss journey are so slim. Don’t believe me? Check out How to Meal Prep for Your Weight Loss Plan and 21 Meal Prep Ideas to Lose Weight, and see for yourself! You’ll have delicious, healthy meals on hand for an entire week in no time!
Tip #5: Get rid of unhealthy foods
If you’re trying to lose weight, you have no use for cookies, unhealthy chips, or anything of the sort. The only thing that those foods will do for you in the long run is make it take longer for you to reach your weight loss goals.
Besides, I guarantee that anything you crave junk food-wise, can be made healthy. You want cookies? Check out our healthier recipes here. You’re craving salty chips? Find some healthier ones here. You saw someone at work slurping some ice cream up during break? Make your own healthy ice cream with these recipes.
Point proven! You can have your favorite foods even while losing weight. These top weight loss tips for women just keep getting better and better, don’t they?
Tip #6: Eat more protein
Protein keeps you full for longer. So, if us women fuel our bodies with healthy proteins like lean meats, eggs, and Greek yogurt, we’re more likely to eat less during the day. We’re, therefore, more likely to accomplish our weight loss goals.
Tip #7: Workout with a friend
There’s no better motivation than a friend who’s after the same goals as you are. I, for one, love going for walks with my friends, with my mom, and even with my brother.
So many people use the excuse that they’re too busy to find much time to see their friends and family that when they do get free time, they’d rather go spend it socializing than exercising. Well, by working out with your friends and/or family, you can do both at the same time AND feel amazing afterwards! Yes, that’s right. Us women can gossip while we exercise! What a great weight loss tip!

7 Foodie Road Trips That Won't Kill Your Healthy-Eating Goals (or Your Wallet)
This article was created with Chase Auto as part of Road to Better.
The dilemma: You want to travel and eat your heart out Guy Fieri style, but you’re on a budget. And you're trying to stay healthy. How do you make it work? How do you say yes to your taste buds, your abs, and your wallet?
The answer: a healthyish food-themed road trip. Road trips are one of the best ways to travel—they don't have to be expensive; you can customize them based on your tastes, interests, and time; and you get to see the world as you drive. Plus, there's nothing better than jumping in your beloved car, throwing on your favorite playlist, and hitting the wide open road.
That's why we teamed up with Chase Auto to track down the best routes that won't break the bank—or put you in a food coma. Each of these scenic drives ends in one of the healthiest cities in the United States, so you can enjoy every bite of the journey without the guilt.
1. The Road Trip That Has It All
The Route: Aspen, CO --> Estes Park, CO --> Denver, CO Distance: 278 miles Food Budget: $$
Take in breathtaking mountain views with a side of incredible food on this road trip from snow-capped Aspen to mile-high Denver. Nosh on Thai coconut soup and roasted cauliflower with garlic chutney at Meat & Cheese in Aspen before making the four-hour drive to Estes Park—a mecca for American bistros serving up locally sourced, organic fare. Since you're probably ready to eat again, order the bison enchiladas at Ed's Cantina & Grill.
After a pit stop in Boulder (stretch your legs on the famed climb to the top of Bear Peak—bonus, it's free!), move on to Denver. Consistently ranked as one of America's healthiest cities, it's known for its hiking trails, bike-sharing programs, and good eats. Try Santiago's for cheap breakfast burritos, Mercantile Dining & Provision for seasonal sandwiches, or Comal for Latin and Syrian food. End your trip with a frosty beer from one of Denver's myriad of breweries (Star Bar is a great dive with an impressive tap list, karaoke, and games).
2. A Drive for the Dumpling-Obsessed
The Route: Los Angeles, CA --> San Francisco, CA Distance: 381 miles Food Budget: $
San Francisco might be known for Ghirardelli chocolate and Los Angeles for green juice, but one of the biggest reasons to visit these West Coast hot spots is the dim sum. First stop: Lunasia in Alhambra, just outside of L.A. proper. The dumplings here are huge (and cheap—starting at $6.99 for six pieces), so grab a friend and balance out a plate of pork siu-mai with a round of shrimp-and-spinach.
If you have an extra day or three, take the Pacific Coast Highway up the coast (more on that road trip here) and drive through the Muir Woods before swinging down to SF. Or put on a podcast and cruise up Interstate 5. Either way, make your next stop Dumpling Time in SoMa. Try the $5 pickled lotus and the boiled, vegetarian Xi'an dumplings, which are packed with local greens. Then hit up Dragon Beaux in Outer Richmond for stuffed eggplant and the pea shoot dumpling, both excellent for meatless munchers.
3. Tacos Every Day of the Week
The Route: Albuquerque, NM --> Tucson, AZ --> Phoenix, AZ Distance: 562 miles Food Budget: $
We love nachos, but they’re not exactly your-body-is-a-temple food. If you need a little spice in your life without inflaming your body, check out New Mexico and Arizona. Often overshadowed by the booming Tex-Mex scene, New Mexico's spicy dishes get their heat from the state's signature ingredient, green chiles, while Tucson and Phoenix are home to some of the best Mexican restaurants in the country. This is a long one, so fuel up on breakfast burritos in Albuquerque (locals swear by Frontier Restaurant) before you head out. If you aren't in a rush for your next taco, detour to the White Sands National Monument for Dunes Drive, an eight-mile stretch through pure-white sand dunes.
Taco time again! In Tucson, visit Guadalajara for a table-side salsa that'll make you weep. Just outside of town is Saguaro National Park, where you can see the largest cacti in the U.S. End your trip at Tacos Chiwas in Phoenix for made-to-order Chihuahua-style tacos ($2.50 each) and frijoles charros (bean soup).
4. Pit Stop-Worthy Barbecue Loop
The Route: Austin, TX --> Taylor, TX --> Lockhart, TX --> Luling, TX --> Austin, TX Distance: 156 miles Food Budget: $$
Almost out of vacation days? This one's for you. Each of the stops is less than an hour from Austin, so if you're feeling ambitious (and really, really hungry), you can do it all in a day. Or pace yourself and take one or two as day trips. Sure, you could argue barbecue isn't the healthiest cuisine, but we say everything in moderation—just order an extra side of veggies and hike the Greenbelt.
Austin has enough good joints to be its own barbecue trail. Franklin Barbecue is perhaps the most well known, but Micklethwait Craft Meats, Stiles Switch BBQ & Brew, and Kerlin BBQ are good options as well. Get in your car and drive 40 minutes northeast to Taylor, where Louie Mueller Barbecue is your best bet. But be sure to save room for your next stop—the Barbecue Capital of Texas (a.k.a. Lockhart).
Cue up "On the Road Again" and fly down Highway 130 (speed limit: 85 mph). Once in Lockhart, you'll have to decide between Kreuz Market (where the meat's so good they don't serve sauce) and Black's Barbecue (run by third-generation pit masters). Full yet? Keep heading south to Luling, where you'll eat mustard-sauce ribs with your hands (no forks allowed) at City Market.
5. Sea-riously Good Seafood
Destination: Portsmouth, NH --> Salem, MA --> Boston, MA Distance: 70 miles Food Budget: $$
Start this New England day trip at one of Portsmouth's delicious buck-a-shuck oyster bars (that's dollar oysters, people!) before driving south to historic Salem for crab cakes. We suggest skipping the highway and driving the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway for at least part of the trek—after all, the beauty of a road trip is being able to take the long, scenic route.
End the day at the Yankee Lobster Company in the Seaport District. The lobster roll isn't cheap cheap, but it's relatively inexpensive ($24)—and isn't drowning in mayo. Or you can grab a small cup of clam chowder (you know, balance) and grilled swordfish for about the same price.
6. A Healthy Dose of Southern Comfort
Destination: Jacksonville, FL --> Savannah, GA --> Charleston, SC Distance: 246 miles Food Budget: $$
It's hard to say no to a big bowl of mac 'n' cheese, but the South does have its share of lighter (but no less flavorful) options. Make your stomach and your Insta happy with an açaí bowl, rainbow toast, or salmon eggs Benedict from First Watch in Jacksonville. Then cruise up to Savannah for surf lessons and a vegetarian feast at Kayak Kafé.
Highway 17 will take you near the eerily beautiful ruins of Old Sheldon Church, by Carolina Cider Company, and through Low Country landscapes. In Charleston, ditch the hot spots in the center of town and check out the Westside’s Gnome Café, where you can order classic Southern favorites turned vegan. The fried “chicken” sandwich (made with seitan) and the Southern grit bowl packed with tofu and portobello “bacon" will satisfy all your comfort-food cravings.
7. I-Can’t-Believe-It’s-Vegan Must-Visits
The Route: Eugene, OR --> Hood River, OR --> Portland, OR Distance: 235 miles Food Budget: $$ Oregon might be known for its cheese artisans and wine bars, but the vegan scene is one even meat eaters will be happy to explore. The Cornbread Cafe in Eugene turns tofu and veggies into creative burgers and barbecue. After you've eaten your fill, explore the city's many natural wonders—from hot springs and waterfalls to scenic byways that make the drive a destination in itself.
Next, make your way to Farm Stand in the Gorge, a local roadside stop with organic, vegan takeout. And while you can't really go wrong with any vegan restaurant in Portland, Jam on Hawthorne is a classic for brunch. Sweet tooth? Grab a scoop of Salt & Straw's roasted strawberry coconut sorbet.

Where To Pick Up Food Before Heading To The Beach added to Google Docs
Where To Pick Up Food Before Heading To The Beach
In the event you haven’t looked at a calendar in a few months, we have an important update - it’s officially summer. And while that has a vastly different meaning in 2020, one LA activity that isn’t going away are beach days. Whether you’re heading out solo, with your family, or tagging along with a socially distant group of friends, every stretch of sand in LA County is open and ready. You just need to make sure you show up with good food to eat. From jerk chicken in Inglewood to calamari in Malibu, here are 15 great places to get takeout before heading to the beach.
THE SPOTS  Blessed Tropical Jamaican Cuisine $ $ $ $ Jamaican  in  Inglewood $$$$ 901 S. Prairie Ave. 8.3 /10
Not only does Blessed serve our favorite Jamaican food in LA, their central Inglewood location has quick access to several great South Bay beaches. We love the jerk chicken with its extra spicy house-made sauce on top, but it’s the goat curry and oxtail that remain the stars of the show for us. Portions are also quite large and easily shareable, meaning you can pick up a few different things and feed the whole group for the day.
 Ali'i Fish Company $ $ $ $ Seafood ,  Hawaiian  in  El Segundo $$$$ 409 E Grand Ave Not

Eating raw fish at the beach is perhaps a bit macabre for some, but for us, it’s just another opportunity to order lunch from Ali’i Fish Company. Simply put, this order-at-the-counter cafe in El Segundo serves some of the best poke in the city. From spicy ahi to ponzu-soaked salmon, the menu here is on par with anything you’d get in Hawai’i. Which makes sense - they source their seafood directly from the islands. Order here for pick-up.
Swift Cafe $$$$ 4279 Crenshaw Boulevard
Today is your summer swimsuit debut, and the last thing you want to do is spend it at the beach eating unhealthy food. Order takeout from Swift Cafe instead. The order-at-the-counter spot in Leimert Park serves fresh, tasty food that’ll fill you up without making you feel bad about it. The menu changes regularly, but you can expect everything from turkey burgers to spaghetti squash to blueberry protein shakes. Check their Instagram for the latest information.
 Malibu Seafood $ $ $ $ Seafood  in  Malibu $$$$ 25653 Pacific Coast Hwy 8.9 /10
Malibu has no shortage of great seafood shacks (Reel Inn, Neptune’s Net), but our first choice will always be Malibu Seafood. The tiny shop is only a few minutes down the road from Zuma, and is a great place to pick up some food before spending all day lying on the beach. Their fried fish and calamari are some of our favorite versions in town, but if you want to make your friends really happy today, show up to the beach with a few pounds of the peel-your-own steamed shrimp.
 Il Romanista $ $ $ $ Pizza  in  El Segundo $$$$ 829 N Douglas St 7.8 /10
If there’s one thing you know about your friends, it’s that they all have very strong opinions about food. If there’s one thing you know about yourself, it’s that you aren’t dealing with it during a day at the beach. And that’s why you’re ordering from Il Romanista. This tiny pizza spot in El Segundo serves tremendous Roman-style pies, meaning square-cut pieces, focaccia-like dough, and minimal Italian toppings. Get the potato, sausage, and rosemary-loaded Curva Sud.
Little Belize $ $ $ $ Belizean  in  Inglewood $$$$ 217 E Nutwood St 7.9 /10
Little Belize is a family-run Belizean restaurant right in downtown Inglewood. They’re currently only doing takeout and delivery, but that’s fine, because you have to get to the beach anyway. As far as the food goes, start with the panades (fried masa stuffed with hash fish) and garnaches (crispy tortillas topped with fried beans, tomatoes, and onions), and end with either chicken or oxtail stew (trust us, it’s so good you’ll want it even on the beach). Both are immensely savory, but it’s the fried plantains on the side that all your friends will be trying to keep for themselves at the beach.
Ms. B's M & M Soul Food Restaurant $ $ $ $ Southern  in  Inglewood $$$$ 801 E Manchester Blvd 7.8 /10
Ms. B’s is an Inglewood institution, and though they moved out of their original location on Manchester Blvd., the Southern soul food spot hasn’t missed a beat. The food is still good and the new space on Imperial Hwy. means even quicker access to the beach. The breaded catfish will always be our go-to here, but frankly, as long as you pick up some mac n’ cheese and their house yams as sides, there’s no such thing as a bad order. Tip: Skip the sweet tea in lieu of The Obama - a lemonade-and-peach-tea mixture that’s ideal for gulping down in a beach chair.
 Gjusta $ $ $ $ American ,  Sandwiches ,  Deli  in  Venice $$$$ 320 Sunset Ave 8.7 /10
If you’re planning a day at Venice Beach, stopping for sandwiches at Gjusta is a necessity. The popular deli/cafe on Rose Ave. has transitioned into a full marketplace selling everything from ceramics to books to pantry essentials. But today, your eyes are on their sandwiches. We’ve found it consistently impossible to order poorly here, but that said, the tuna conserva, porchetta melt, and anything that involves lox are our go-tos. Call (310) 314-0320 for takeout.
 FishBar $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Seafood  in  Manhattan Beach $$$$ 3801 Highland Ave 7.5 /10
In all of Manhattan Beach’s increasing opulence, FishBar remains one of the few places where you can roll in with a few friends before the beach, pick up some fresh fish, and not empty your entire bank account in the process. The dive-y spot north of MB’s downtown has a big menu full of bar food, but we recommend sticking to the fish tacos and shrimp skewers.
 Wexler's Deli $ $ $ $ Sandwiches ,  Deli  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 616 Santa Monica Blvd 8.6 /10
You can’t quite remember why you agreed to meet your friends at the beach at 10am, but at any rate, your best hope for a hangover cure is a stop at Wexler’s in Santa Monica first. Open every day at 8am, this modern Jewish deli has excellent food across the board, but on those hazy weekend mornings, we go right for the Uncle Leo. Lox, egg, onion, and cream cheese, all on a bagel of your choice. If this doesn’t clear things up for you, you might just have to head home.
Sky’s Gourmet Tacos $$$$ 5200 W Century Blvd Ste 1
Sky’s is one of our favorite taco shops in town, and now with a second location in Marina del Rey, you can easily do takeout on your way to the beach. Admittedly, the taco menu here is pared down compared to their original Mid-City location, but they still sell their signature shrimp taco with “sassy sauce,” plus there’s an entire marketplace to pick through as well. Whether you’re looking for salads, sandwiches, or specialty pizzas, Sky’s has everything you need to complete your beach picnic.
Quality Seafood $ $ $ $ Seafood  in  Redondo Beach $$$$ 130 International Boardwalk 7.8 /10
Quality Seafood has been open since 1953 and is a Redondo Beach institution. Located right on the pier, this is the kind of place where you pick your seafood, decide whether you want it roasted, steamed, or fried, and wait for your feast to arrive. If ordering individually feels like too much of an undertaking, however, go for either the seafood paella or lobster and clam bake. Both are excellent and ideal for big groups on the beach. Order here for takeout.
 ASAP Phorage $ $ $ $ Vietnamese  in  Playa Del Rey $$$$ 303 Culver Blvd 8.2 /10
Located inside a convenience store in Playa del Rey, ASAP Phorage is a tiny counter serving quick, delicious Vietnamese food. We absolutely love their pho, but when it comes to a day at the beach, head for the banh mi section of the menu instead. The lemongrass pork is a classic, but the ground beef curry banh mi is our favorite sandwich on the menu. Tip: Grab a green papaya salad for a much-needed cool down later in the day.
Family Fish Market $ $ $ $ Seafood  in  Carson $$$$ 18503 S Avalon Blvd 7.9 /10
This old-school fish counter is in a strip mall across from the StubHub Center in Carson. It’s Louisiana-style, meaning you’ll pick between snapper, sole, catfish, or shrimp, and they’ll fry it right in front of you. Everything is available a la carte, but we like the combo specials, which get you several pieces of fish and two sides (you want the hush puppies) for under $10. From there, it’s only about a 15-minute drive to Redondo Beach.
 Tallula's $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 118 Entrada Drive Not

This modern cantina just a few blocks from Will Rogers State Beach has gone through a couple different iterations over the last few years, but we like this current one the best. The menu is now a combination of Indian, Burmese, and Mexican influences, so think tandoori chicken fajitas, crispy rice salad, and curried beef tacos. Call (310) 526-0027 for takeout.

There are only so many moments throughout history that create a window for long overdue change. Thanks to the hard work of protesters and activists over decades and generations, now is one of them. One way to celebrate and support the Black community right now (and consistently in the future) is by learning from Black activists, listening to Black stories, and spending your dollars at Black-owned businesses. That’s why we put together a list of movies and documentaries that celebrate Black history and culture, and paired each one with a Black-owned restaurant in NYC that’s open for takeout right now.
Don’t let your learning stop at this guide. Follow accounts like Color Of Change, The Dream Defenders, We Are Your Voice, Gal-Dem, and others to learn more about these issues. This is just one way in which you can support the Black community right now - along with donating to local and national organizations dedicated to fighting for racial justice.

Movie Pairing: The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson (Netflix)
“If you’re unfamiliar with Marsha P. Johnson, activists in this documentary describe her as the ‘Rosa Parks of the LGBTQ movement.’ She was a key leader of the Stonewall Riots, a two-day series of demonstrations at the Greenwich Village’s Stonewall Inn in 1969 - a movement that evolved into what we now know as The Pride Parade. Along with Sylvia Riveria and many other trans people of color, Marsha P. Johnson paved the way for present-day activists to push for legislation like the Supreme Court ruling, which made it illegal to fire someone for being LGBTQ+ in the U.S. Victoria Cruz, a contemporary of Marsha P. Johnson, shares personal accounts from this legendary moment in history through in this stunning documentary.” -ND

Movie Pairing: If Beale Street Could Talk (Hulu)
“James Baldwin only needs to use about four words to make me cry. So it makes sense that a Barry Jenkins directed movie based on Baldwin’s 1974 novel _If Beale Street Could Talk_produces the same weepy-beautiful result. This movie is about the immovable love of two Black teenagers in Harlem in the ’70s. You’ll know it from the very first scene when Tish (played by Kiki Layne) visits her love Fonny (Stephan James) in prison after he’s been wrongfully arrested for a crime he did not commit in downtown Manhattan. Tish says in a voiceover, “I hope that nobody has ever had to look at anybody they love through glass.” This line is especially painful because, as much as Tish hopes others won’t experience this same feeling, we know so many people have.” -HA
Order: Spicy shrimp tacos and flourless chocolate cake from Extra Virgin in the West Village (near where Fonny and Tish go on a big date).
Maxine On The Boulevard $$$$ 11333 Farmers Blvd
Movie Pairing: Get Out (Hulu)
“In Jordan Peele’s 2017 Get Out, he confronts those who say they “don’t see race,” or, “I would have voted for Obama for a third term if I could have,” but end up other-ing people of color in detrimental, though not always overt, ways. In this case, lead Daniel Kaluuya as Chris gets trapped at his white girlfriend’s family estate where they [spoiler alert] hypnotize him in hopes of transplanting their blind, elderly gallerist friend’s brain into his seeing and able body. Whether Get Out is a comedy, horror film, or something else entirely is beside the point. This somehow hilarious look at contemporary racism probes a hazier form of bigotry.” -AS
Order: Fish and Chips from Maxine On The Boulevard

Movie Pairing: American Son (Netflix)
“American Son is probably one of the most powerful performances of Kerry Washington’s career. I say that because she performed it for three months on Broadway before Netflix decided to create the film version. On the surface, it’s a story about a mother and a father who spend a night at a Florida police precinct while trying to find their missing son. But as tensions rise, themes of race, gender, parenting, and policing come to the forefront. Whether you miss Scandal or want to learn more about how American families suffer from the issue of racial bias within our country’s police force, this is a great watch.” -ND

Movie Pairing: The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 (Hulu)
“In the late ’60s and early ’70s, several bowl cut-flaunting Swedish journalists filmed a series of interviews with some of the most influential leaders of the Black Power movement, as well as scenes from everyday life in Harlem, Brooklyn, and Oakland. As outsiders, these Swedes wanted to better understand how Black folks lived in America at the time. That footage was later found and edited into a series of nine different stories, each paired with voiceover commentary from artists like Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, Sonia Sanchez, Questlove, and Harry Belafonte. By the end of the documentary, you’ll realize there is no better word for what you’re witnessing than a “mixtape.” Even though each story is distinct, they all become contextually informed by what precedes and follows. In case you haven’t spent enough time getting to know the minds of Angela Davis, Stokely Carmichael, and Louis Farrakhan, let this treasure trove of lost footage be a way in.” - HA
Order: Create a mixtape-esque meal from Ponty Bistro in Harlem. We see no reason a crepe with nutella and banana shouldn’t go nicely with some poulet yassa and a lobster BLT.
Milk & Pull $$$$ 778 Seneca Ave
Movie Pairing: Tangerine (Hulu) “It’s Christmas Eve in LA, and Sin-Dee is looking for clients. When it comes to her attention that her pimp boyfriend hasn’t been faithful, she and her best friend Alexandra set out to seek revenge. At its heart, Tangerine is a hysterical and touching buddy comedy, but I can’t think of any other buddy comedies starring Black trans sex workers. The film, which was shot entirely on an iPhone 5S, covers a different kind of glamorous Hollywood than we’re used to. It’s subversive, hilarious, and the final, tense scene in a donut shop where everyone spills each other’s tea will probably make you really want a donut.” - AS
Order: Donuts from Milk And Pull

Movie Pairing: Foxy Brown (Prime)
“Foxy Brown might be the most famous Blaxploitation film of all time, and it’s all thanks to Pam Grier. If you’re not familiar, the term “Blaxploitation” refers to a ’70s film genre that includes movies about black people who aren’t afraid to go after what they want by any means necessary. This film follows Foxy, played by Pam Grier, on her road to avenge the killing of her lover. No one had ever seen a black woman as captivating and tenacious as Grier on the big screen, which is why Foxy Brown made her an icon of the genre. If this film isn’t on your list of ‘100 Things To Watch Before You Die,’ add it now.” -ND

Movie Pairing: Love & Basketball (Prime)
“I don’t know how else to say this, but watching Love & Basketball on Vh1 was a seminal part of my sexual awakening, and I hope it was part of yours too. This was one of the first movies where I saw a female lead character run sh*t with fervor, while still being considered attractive by a hot man (upon reflection, I now understand that’s what happens when women direct movies). If you missed out on this early 2000s classic, all you really need to know is that there’s an iconic scene where the two characters play one-on-one strip-basketball in a USC dorm room and Monica says, “all is fair in love and basketball.” Major swoon.” -HA
Order: An Ethiopian feast for two from Bunna Cafe, even if it’s really just for one. When you’re in the presence of a movie with this much tension, you should only eat food with your hands.
Field Trip Fieldtrip $$$$ 109 Malcolm X Blvd
Movie Pairing: Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am (Hulu)
“Few people have ever spoken as poetically and radically about the black experience in America as Toni Morrison. The Nobel Prize- winning storyteller published her first book in 1970, while occupying her position as the first black woman editor in fiction at Random House, but she didn’t stop there. As this documentary gets across, her influence on the world extends well into the 20th century and will continue to change lives for generations. Before her passing in 2019, she helped create this documentary about her life, in which she narrates her own story, including juicy details about her work with activist Angela Davis during the civil rights movement of the 1960s.” -ND
Order: Fried Fish Bowl and Dragon Fruit Lemonade from Field Trip
The Bergen $$$$ 1299 Bergen St
Movie Pairing: 13th (Netflix)
“Are you a white person with a Netflix account you may or may not pay for? Me too. Have you spent many hours watching British Bakeoff and the new season of Dating Around? Me too. Let’s make a pact to pause those shows and watch Ava Duvernay’s 2016 documentary 13th - even if you’ve already seen it. This film is a required 101 on the causes and effects of the mass incarceration of Black people, and an excellent explanation of how the constitutional amendment abolishing slavery mostly privileges white people with Netflix accounts they may or may not pay for.” -HA
Order: Something to gorge on during the whole movie, like fries and wings from The Bergen in Crown Heights.
Ode to Babel $ $ $ $ Prospect Heights $$$$ 772 Dean St
Movie Pairing: The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution (Prime)
“It would be a mistake to ignore the impact of The Black Panther Party on American culture. And with all of the myths surrounding their legacy, I found this documentary to be an extremely thorough deep dive into what really happened in the early 1970s when this anti-capitalist organization expanded to 68 cities across the U.S., providing social welfare programs like free breakfast for children and community health clinics. All while making a mark in the fashion world with their militant uniform - a black leather jacket, black beret, and dark sunglasses - which Beyonce references in her 2016 Super Bowl performance.” -ND
Order: Sorrel Not Sorry Bottled Cocktail (with Mezcal, Hibiscus, and Lemon) from Ode To Babel
