Fandom: Detroit become human | Ship: Reed900 [Part1]
As they laid in bed not much later, covered by thick blankets and encased in each other’s arms, it felt like a crime to disturb the silence. What had happened that day lingered between them, the words unspoken weighing them down and threatening to break the peace once voiced and made reality. Nines would rather just stay silent and continue to hold Gavin in his arms and feel his hands hold him, too. And the human seemed to have the same idea. Nines shifted a little and studied Gavin’s face, relaxed and half asleep. At his movements, the man opened his eyes and just watched him back; aware of his staring and that there was more than just adoration prompting him to do so.
The android retracted a hand from Gavin’s chest and instead used it to hold the cheek he wasn’t lying on. The human hummed at the contact and closed his eyes with a long exhale. Nines extended his thumb to brush over the scar on the bridge of his nose and his eyes quickly lost focus, taking in the information of his sensors as a whole. He continued to brush his thumb back and forth the scar as his other hand traced the scars on his back until he could feel his heartbeat through his ribs. He listened to it for a little while, then clenched his eyes shut as if in pain, retracting his hands and pulling out of Gavin’s hug.
‘Nines? Nines, love, what’s wrong?’ Gavin’s hands tried to reach out for him again, but he just sat up, evading them. The human sighed and sat up too. ‘Nines, please. Talk to me.’ ‘You are still alive’, Nines whispered with almost undetectable static underneath his voice. ‘You are still alive. They couldn’t kill you. I saved you.’ ‘You did’, Gavin confirmed. ‘You saved me and I’m still alive.’ ‘But I killed people. There would have been other ways to save you, but I blanked out and I killed.’ ‘Listen Nines’, Gavin tried. ‘This mission went wrong, hell it was already going to shit when they found out Allen’s real identity. Mistakes happen.’ ‘That’s not it’, Nines said desperately, hands clawing at his head. ‘Gavin, no matter how I look at it, there is no regret I killed them. I know there had been other ways, but you are safe now. You are safe and that’s all that matters to me. But that is wrong. I should-‘ ‘Shhh’, Gavin shushed him. ‘Nines. Nines, c’mere.’ He pushed himself over to the android and leaned against his side. He took it as a good sign that he didn’t do anything to stop him when he hugged him from the side.
‘Nines, that’s normal. At least for human standards. I don’t blame you and I’m sure neither would anyone else.’ ‘But I’m blaming myself’, Nines sighed. ‘I should feel something. I killed them.’ ‘No, you didn’t. I saw it. It was your soldier protocol taking over. That’s not you.’ Nines shook his head once again and pushed out of Gavin’s embrace to look at him. ‘Gavin, that’s me. This is who I am, I can’t change it. I come with this… problem, there is no me without it. Enough emotional turmoil and that’s who I become: inhuman, entirely machine and a ruthless killer.’ ‘And you think I am any different?’, Gavin asked. ‘Have you seen me? I just punched a Federal Agent several times because he was racist towards someone I love.’ ‘That’s not the same, Perkins is still alive.’ ‘For now’, Gavin huffed and that at least managed to make Nines chuckle despite everything.
‘Gavin, I appreciate the sentiment, but it doesn’t help. I love you. Seeing you in danger just triggers the killer to take over and I have no control then. I could have killer innocents. Hell, I could have killed our own people. Had you been hurt, I could have killed the paramedics trying to help you.’ Nines sighed deeply. ‘I don’t know if I can X with my consciousness working a job where I will see you in danger quite often.’ ‘Well, I think Fowler will have us on deskwork anyways for a while’, Gavin joked. ‘Not what I meant and you know it.’
The human next to him sighed. ‘Yeah, I know, but what else can I say? That you should quit your job? I know you love it. You said it often enough: this is the perfect way of challenging your advanced systems and doing good.’ ‘But I’m more of a threat than a helpful tool to do good.’ ‘Not a tool’, Gavin reminded him with warning undertone. ‘And you may be a risk, but not a threat. Hell, Nines everyone makes mistakes. In five years, you did two. But so did I! Letting myself get captured twice? In your logic I’m at fault too then. And I highly doubt I deserved to die for that or lose my job. Shit happens. We can only try to do better next time.’
But Nines seemed too riled up to listen. ‘When will you finally understand I am not human?’, he near shouted. ‘I can’t try to do better. I know for certain I will react exactly the same should something like this happen again.’ ‘Then I will do better for both of us!’, Gavin called back, fed up with Nines’ self-pity. ‘You said yourself there is no way of eliminating errors.’ ‘Oh, phck you, Nines. If you just want me to listen, say so. If you want my help, don’t find excuses why it doesn’t apply to you! I know you are a machine! I know you are not human. I don’t care. You are still a person. And a person can always change. You already proofed that by being this troubled about the whole ordeal, when you were designed to be like that full time. If you want to quit police work, fine. I will still see you at home and I fully support you. But before you do so, give me one good reason besides being stuck in a thought spiral. I somehow doubt that you wouldn’t react the exact same way would you not work at the DPD and I was in danger. And I won’t quit this job, so that will happen someday.’ He sighed deeply, knowing they were both arguing about something they would solve that day or even that week.
He deflated and reduced his voice to a soft murmur: ‘Isn’t it better to do this together? So I can be there and help you should you lose control again?’ A wave of relief washed over him as he felt Nines’ shoulder press into his side at that. ‘Maybe’, the android admitted. ‘I think you are the only person in this world to stop me should it ever happen again, considering you at least partially caused it both times.’ Gavin’s huff ended in a groan at Nines’ hint of a smile. ‘Getting confident again?’ ‘Not really. Depends on whether Fowler allows us both to continue working as Detectives after me slaughtering half a gang to protect you and you punching Perkins bloody to protect me.’ ‘Come on, I’m safe on that and Allen’s fine, so you are probably fine, too’, Gavin waved the issue away, but his tone suggested he wasn’t too sure about that himself.
‘If you are right, we both owe Fowler big time’, Nines remarked, snuggling closer to Gavin already. ‘Oh, yeah, that will come to bite us in the ass someday’, Gavin agreed with only slight worry as he was sinking back against Nines, exhausted from one of the shittier days of his life, but happy to still have the chance to just lie here. Next to the love of his life.

***
The shrill ring of your phone pierced through your room, disturbing you from your whole two hours of sleep. You groaned, rolling over to grab it, wondering who in the hell would be calling you this early in the morning.
Connor. Reluctantly, you answer the phone, knowing that this likely wasn’t a friendly hello. If Connor was calling you at one in the morning, there was a good chance you’d be getting ready to go to a crime scene.
After a brief conversation confirming your suspicions, you hung up, a heavy sigh escaping your lips. You figured it wouldn’t be the best idea to keep the android waiting, so you slipped out of bed and threw on some clothes before stepping into the bathroom to give your teeth a quick brush.
You slipped on some shoes before wandering out into your kitchen, grabbing your badge from the counter and latching it onto your belt. You made some coffee, pouring it into a thermos when it was finished. A faint honk sounded outside.
“That’s my cue Sammy, see ya later,” you called out to your cat, getting a muffled mrow in return. You smiled to yourself, grabbing a jacket, your thermos, and keys before heading out the door, locking it behind you.
You hopped into the car, barely having time to shut the door before Hank was speeding off again.
“Jesus Hank, never seen you in such a rush to get to a crime scene at this time,” you mumble, taking a sip of your coffee.
“We don’t always get a call where the suspect is still confirmed to be on the scene either,” the older man replied, glancing at you in the rearview mirror.
You hummed in agreement, taking another sip of your coffee before tapping the android sat in front of you on the shoulder. Connor turned to look at you, tilting his head to the side.
“I’m more awake now, gimmie a briefing sweet cheeks.”
Ignoring the nickname, Connor went over the known information with you, a light shade of blue tinting his face the whole time.
A comfortable silence settled over the car as Connor finished, no one breaking it as the ride continued.
***
Hank cleared his throat as he pulled up to the scene: a dreary looking apartment building already surrounded by cops. You set down your coffee, stepping out of the car and following Hank and Connor towards the front doors.
“Suspect still hasn’t left the building, to our knowledge,” a lower ranking officer said, walking inside the building with your group. “He’s likely still on the 12th floor where the murder occurred.”
“Thanks for the info Davis, we’ll take it from here,” you said, nodding to the officer in question.
“Just… Be careful. We don’t really know what we’re dealing with here but all the info we have right now shows this guy is definitely not someone to be taken lightly.”
Hank grumbled out a “great”, stretching out the word with an eye roll.
“I’m detecting a bit of sarcasm, lieutenant,” Connor states matter of factly.
“That’s because danger is your middle fuckin’ name, kid. Always seem to be getting yourself almost killed.”
You smirked at their antics, nudging past them and towards the elevators. The two followed you, and you leaned over to press the ‘12th Floor’ button when you were all packed into the elevator.
As the elevator neared its destination, Hank took out his gun, aiming it towards the elevator doors. You followed suit, steadying your aim as you glanced over to Hank.
“Now remember,” the man said, switching off the safety on his gun, “they think this piece of shit is still up here, but they don’t know where. Keep your guard up, I’m not in the fuckin’ mood to file more paperwork today because one of you idiots decided to get yourselves shot.”
Connor nods, and you turn off the safety on your gun in response. The elevator doors open to a quiet, empty hallway.
Slowly, quietly, you all step out of the elevator, Hank taking the lead and you trailing in the back. Hank knocks on the first door, and the mind numbingly slow search of the evacuated floor starts.
***
You’ve searched the whole floor, only to find it’s completely empty, save for the victim’s body. Hank mutters something about wasting his time and a drink, and heads for the elevators. You go to follow, but a hand on your shoulder stops you.
Connor nods his head towards a door back further down the hallway, and you understand. He’s heard something. You creep towards the door, gun pointed and ready. Poking your head into the doorway, you motion for Connor to lead the way, stopping him with a hand on his arm to give him a stern look.
You mouth the words ‘be careful’ before releasing him, and following him towards a room further back in the apartment. Slowly, carefully, you push open the door to the room and peek in. Empty.
“Shit,” you mumble, but before you can turn around you hear a small ‘click!’ behind you. You let out a slow breath, locking eyes with Connor before turning around.
“Drop your weapon, or I’ll shoot!” The suspect shouts, gun aimed directly for your head. You swallow hard, taking a moment to weigh your chances of survival before tossing your gun towards the much taller man.
He switches his aim, focusing on Connor’s head now.
“If you have any weapons, drop them now or I’ll blow your head off.”
Connor shakes his head. “I’m unarmed, but you’re not making a good choice,” he says, voice even and smooth as ever. You elbow the android in the side, a sign to stop talking before he pisses off this guy even more.
The suspect takes a second to glance down at the gun you tossed to him. He bends down to pick it up and you turn to Connor.
“If there was ever a time to start running, now would be it,” you say tugging on his hand and dashing into the room behind you. He gets the picture, and follows you quickly, taking a second to close the door behind him. You’re already on the fire escape, motioning for him to hurry the fuck up and he complies, wasting no time in hopping out of the window and rushing down the fire escape.
You follow close behind, noticing his LED is a steady yellow, and Hank’s muffled voice can be heard. It quickly turns red as gunshots can be heard above you, and he grabs onto your hand, pulling you faster and faster down the fire escape. He takes a moment to stop and call Hank again, uttering a frantic, “He’s outside!” as more gunshots are heard, this time aimed down at the two of you.
A bullet grazes Connor’s shoulder, barely missing you. You hardly have time to react before another bullet from above hits you, tearing through your arm in a matter of seconds. You let out a strangled whimper, but push Connor forward and continue your descent, glancing up momentarily to see the suspect leaning over the edge of the fire escape, already aiming to take another shot at you.
You rush down to the bottom, descending the ladder into an alley filled with cops, guns all trained towards the man who was shooting at you seconds ago. One cop ushers the two of you inside and up into the lobby where Hank and some paramedics are waiting.
One of them ties a tourniquet around your arm, giving you a second to glance around the crowded lobby. You notice the SWAT team has been called, and Captain Allen stands in the corner giving directions to his men. You look over at Hank and Connor, giving the two a tight lipped smile as the paramedic sets a hand on your unhurt shoulder.
You turn to follow the paramedic out to the ambulance, gingerly holding your arm as you climb into the back. The ride to the hospital is silent, and when you arrive, you’re quickly brought into a room so doctors can get to work on your arm.
***
A few hours later, you were released from the hospital. You reached into your pocket for your phone, but sighed when you remembered you had left it at home. You start the slow walk back to the police station, hoping Hank and Connor are there so you can let them know you’re okay in person.
You’re fairly cold, as the hospital took both your bloodstained shirt and jacket, giving you only a paper thin shirt to wear instead. You breath into your hands, rubbing them together in an attempt to warm them up and continue towards the station.
A few minutes into your walk, you hear screeching tires behind you and the slam of a car door. You turn towards the noise, and right into the chest of a very worried, very warm android.
“Thank ra9 you’re okay,” he breathes, wrapping his arms around you carefully so as not to disturb your injured arm.
You melt into him, welcoming the warmth with a smile on your face.
“Take me home, please,” you mumble into his chest, and he picks you up in response, gently setting you in the back seat of Hank’s car and sitting beside you. He keeps an arm wrapped around your shoulders and you lean into him. You notice the bullet wound in his arm has been fixed, but before you can comment on it you drift off to sleep, the stress of the night along with your lack of sleep finally catching up with you.
***
When you wake next, you’re back in your bed, a warm blanket wrapped around you and your cat curled up at your feet. You shift, about to roll onto your side before you realize there’s someone in bed with you. You glance up to see Connor, a peaceful look on his face. His eyes are closed and his LED is spinning, a pale yellow color washing over you. Smiling to yourself, you settle back down and wonder if he’s sending a report to the station, or if he’s just resting.
“What would I do without you, Con…” you sigh, closing your eyes and drifting back into the first peaceful sleep you’ve had in awhile.

Police killings spark protests in Trinidad's capital
Tumblr media
Police killings in T&T have increased by 86 percent this year
Screenshot of a video shared via WhatsApp and broadcast in a TTT Live Online video, showing police officers returning fire against protestors in east Port of Spain, Trinidad, on June 30, 2020.
On Saturday, June 27, hours after police officer Allen Moseley was shot dead in Morvant, a depressed area in the east of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago's capital, officers from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service's (TTPS) Guard and Emergency Branch—the unit in which Moseley served—went into the district and killed three men. The police claim they were fired upon by the occupants of a vehicle, but security camera footage of the incident circulating via WhatsApp shows at least one of the men raising his arms in surrender. Following the deaths of the three men, who have since been identified as Noel Diamond, Joel Jacobs, and Israel Clinton, protests erupted in the Morvant area on June 29. Residents blocked the road, burned tyres and other debris, and compared the deaths of the three men to the murder of George Floyd. Clinton, who was acquitted of theft charges laid against him a few years ago, was suing the state for police brutality over a related beating incident that left him in hospital for weeks. Lawyers representing the families of two of the deceased referred to their deaths as “extra-legal,” “arbitrary” and “summary executions,” and demanded that the officers involved be suspended from duty while the investigation takes place, a call that was echoed by at least one newspaper editorial and the NGO Womantra. Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith and Alan Miguel, Chief Investigator at the Police Complaints Authority, the statutory body charged with independently investigating complaints against the TTPS, stated that an investigation the killings had been launched, but on the morning of June 30 the protests continued, blocking main transportation routes in and out of the capital city as people processed through the streets demanding justice and chanting “Don't shoot!” Some demonstrations reportedly turned violent; at least one video shared on social media channels showed protestors shooting at the police and officers returning fire. A third-floor window at the attorney general's office was shot at. Protest actions also mushroomed, spreading to areas outside of the capital. At about 11 am on June 30, Minister of National Security Stuart Young held a press conference in which he stated that community residents were being paid to cause civil unrest. He suggested that citizens should consider “who stands to gain” in such circumstances, making the point that “criminal elements are not always who we call gang members”. One aspiring politician, Fuad Abu Bakr, son of Yasin Abu Bakr, the leader of the insurgents who staged an unsuccessful coup d'etat in 1990, was arrested, allegedly for disturbing the peace. Trinidad and Tobago is scheduled to hold general elections later this year. The unrest was quelled by the authorities shortly after noon Trinidad time (UTC−04:00) on June 30, but the online discussion continued. Youth activist and law student Kareem Marcelle, who has been advocating for justice in the deaths of three men, condemned the violent protests, explaining that responding to acts of illegality with other acts of illegality is counterproductive. In a public Facebook post, he pleaded:
Personally, I don’t support not encourage violent or destructive Protests! I’m begging y’all let’s not take away from what we want! We need Public Support for this! We can’t hurt nor distress the very same people we want to support our Cause! Let your voices be heard but PLEASE operate within the confines of the LAW! Don’t defeat the Purpose PLEASE! Right now the families are cooperating with our Legal Team, the PCA and the TTPS! Let’s not mess this up! Justice have to and will be served! #MorvantBlackLivesMatter
The unrest is also happening against a disturbing backdrop: over the past year, police killings in Trinidad and Tobago have increased by a startling 86 percent, with 43 people shot dead by police officers so far this year. Facebook user Terry-ann Roy was disturbed by the statistics:
Yal sharing a pic of one of the victims with a gun as if that negates the fact that we have a thing called DUE PROCESS and that the police aren't judge jury and executioners! All that shows is you have no understanding of what justice means. #morvantblacklivesmatter
Such protests are also happening within a social system that makes it difficult for people from depressed communities to rise above their current circumstances, reigniting conversations about equitable wealth distribution, systemic racism and police abuse. According to Kareem Marcelle:
Once you’re a young black man from a ‘Hotspot’ and you’re killed by Police Officers; there are many persons in society that AUTOMATICALLY Presumed that: 1. You’re a Criminal 2. Police deserve to kill you 3. Police are always right 4. Your life don’t matter 5. You’re Guilty by default You know what is the WORST part of it all? Many times its our OWN Black Brothers and Sisters pushing this agenda! And THAT is PRECISELY why many Police Officers feel as if they a Judge, Jury and Executioner! YOU Empower them when you defend their Actions!
One Twitter post attempted to explain why the protests were happening:
For all those who are wondering why protests are happening pic.twitter.com/Lzob1fhv9j — Nyomi
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(@ThomasNyomi) June 30, 2020
Still, many social media users remained at opposite ends of the divide:
Riots are the language of the unheard. We expect the police to treat them like human beings BECAUSE they ARE human beings. Stop policing the people who are the victims of police brutality and instead police the actual police. It's their actions under scrutiny… Not protestors. — Ronelle King (@IAmXilomen) June 30, 2020
Meanwhile, Minister Young has tried to focus on the “robust” investigatory process of the PCA even as businesses in and around the capital city made the decision to close early, and the US Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago issued a security alert related to “civil unrest”. Adding fuel to the fire was yet another police killing, this time of a woman in the disadvantaged area of Beetham Gardens. The incident sparked fresh protests in the presence of police officers. The police service put out a press statement shortly thereafter:
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) wishes to assure the public that the well-orchestrated plan to destabilize the country by a few, has been quelled. So far, 72 persons have been arrested, and others are expected to be charged when investigations are completed. There has been one casualty — a woman — and investigations are underway to determine the cause of her death. Intelligence has revealed that this was an orchestrated plan that was led by several gang members, whereby the intention was to use the shooting of the three young men a few days ago, as a front to cover the planned plot to shut down the country.
The release also stated that the police force remains on high alert, with the nation being kept “under heavy police surveillance” for the next 48 hours.

Junkyard Pirate – Jamie McFarlane
Knocking at death’s door. Bargaining for a second chance. Seems like a heck of a way to find out about an alien invasion…
Vietnam vet Albert Jenkins is battling a bulging waistline and a passion for drink. So when a towering pile of scrap rocket parts falls and crushes the stubborn curmudgeon, he thinks it’s finally the end. But just as he’s about to take one final breath, a snarky alien parasite offers him a deal: his life in return for sharing his body.
With a little coaxing from his new pop-culture-loving inner resident, AJ’s broken carcass improves so much that even an old flame is impressed. But his bright outlook fizzles when he discovers he’s at ground zero of a galactic conspiracy to strip Earth of precious resources humans don’t even know exist.
Can the unlikely partners join forces and use AJ’s rusty military skills to raise the alarm? Or, will the alien invaders put him down once and for all?
Storm Clouds (The Four Horsemen Universe: Guild Wars #1) – Chris Kennedy and Mark Wandrey
The Omega War ended, not with a bang, but with a whimper.
The Peacemaker-enforced ceasefire brought an end to the hostilities, but not a resolution, and now it’s up to the Four Horsemen to forge a lasting peace. Alexis Cromwell, despite her pregnancy, heads off to Capital with Nigel Shirazi to obtain justice from the enigmatic Mercenary Guild Council, but when they arrive, they’re quickly embroiled in galactic politics, and find out the situation is far, far worse than they could possibly have imagined.
On Earth, Jim Cartwright has been given the task of ‘fixing’ the world government, which was complicit in General Peepo and the Merc Guild’s invasion. He has some good ideas, but so do Peepo’s agents who have stayed behind to foment rebellion. Sansar Enkh has her formidable intelligence service to watch his back…but will it be enough?
Additionally, a new force is emerging on Earth, and it is raising far more questions than it is answering. What is the enigmatic Section 51, and what are their ultimate goals?
As the Horsemen work for peace, the clouds of war are on the horizon. A greater war is looming as the other guilds, sensing weakness in the Mercenary Guild, begin their fight for supremacy. Who will be left when the storm clouds clear?
Void Horizon (Ruins of the Galaxy #4) – J. N.Chaney and Christopher Hopper
An enemy with otherworldly powers. A war fueled by insatiable bloodlust. No one will be spared.
Following their first victory against a rogue unit of Repub Marines, Magnus finds his newly trained gladias pinned down by a squadron of Talons. But when he discovers that their prisoners may hold critical answers to bringing down the enemy, Magnus must stop at nothing to get his team to safety and interrogate the enemy combatants.
Once aboard their new Novian starship, however, Magnus isn’t prepared for the intel he uncovers. The enemy’s power is growing stronger by the day, and their claws have found their way into his own team members.
Forced across the void horizon into his home universe, Magnus must search to find Awen’s mentor and famed Elder of the Luma, Willowood. But finding the old woman before the enemy unleashes the next stage of its plans could mean the end of Magnus’s fledgling resistance.
