Sorry this is my first time to post anything here on tumblr, I initially was just happy being a silent observer(lurker), and i have been here for almost 3 years. The thing is this post are for my 3 pets Oreo(tuxedo), Meatball(tabby), and Rolly Polly(white with blind right eye). All three had a bout of Upper Respiratory Infection(URI), that we have to go back and forth to the vet. Thankfully all 3 recovered but a few days later they stopped eating, went back to the vet to find out all 3 have Stomatitis triggered by the URI, a chronic inflammation of the gums and the insides of the mouth. The vet suggested tooth extraction, I already incured alot off bills during their bout with the URI, I hope anyone who comes across this post can help me or at least post it out there to others. I was hoping to go set up a Gofundme but it does not work on my country(Philippines). Thanks to everyone who have the time to read this post. Pls reblog if you can.

Auto-immune induced stomatitis in cat.

Most cats are presented with reluctance to feed, despite clear signs of good appetite (hungry but can't eat because it's too painful). Signs of mouth pain (salivating, sometimes blood and puss might flow from the mouth). It is more often than not that the cats who develop this disease have really poor dental condition, as seen in this cat with all the plaque build up around the molars.

As stated earlier that this is an autoimmune disease. The cats with this condition respond really well with immune suppression. Be it the simple steroid like Prednisolone, or preferably the safer option (unfortunately much more expensive) Cyclosporin.

Most cats will respond very well with a complete recovery if they receive a full-mouth teeth removal, as the teeth are the target organ of immune attack. The vet must be sure to remove ALL of the remnants of teeth. No residue teeth pieces must be left behind.

Most clients I have cared for decline this option, and opted for long term cyclosporin, with acceptable results of good quality of life.

We often recommend older cats to get a regular dental cleaning care to prevent development of this disease. It is not 100% preventable, but the chances are much better for cats who has good dental hygeine.

Little baby Duncan went to see the doctor today. He has some gingivitis so we’re gonna try some meds for him. Doc said it is possible it ends up being stomatitis, which is an awful chronic inflammation of the gums. Hopefully not, but just something to be aware of

had to bring my african fat-tailed gecko to the vet (this is my first time at this clinic because my old exotic vet left the practice), and the doctor gave me a care sheet about leopard geckos and I ???? they do look very similar and have similar husbandry in some ways but AFTs are from Madagascar… where it is humid… and leopard geckos (which I also have) are from like Iran and Afghanistan… where it is decidedly not humid. and he was talking to me about keeping humidity down and???? again??? he’s from the rainforest??? 😭 I think this man doesn’t realize this is an AFT he’s looking at, not a leopard gecko and I’m ???

…that new powerful pain meds, dehydration, lack of enough food, and minimal sleep can lead to sudden sweaty passing out on the bathroom floor? Because I did not.

I’m okay I swear! Just stuck on the cool floor with my feet up and an ice pack for the overheating. Hey at least my mouth doesn’t hurt as much. It was pretty scary, and Momther Muppet was incredibly freaked out, but I’m going to be fine. I’m just glad I wasn’t at work.
