Watching Avatar on Dis+ and I think what really made me connect to Jake's character so much is how being in his Navi body becomes more real than his daily life. How he finds a new purpose and something more beyond what he's known all his life.
Is the story built on the foundations of others? Yes. Is it reminiscent of the whole white savior line of storytelling? Yes. Does it have some over-acted stereotypes? Yes.
But it is enough of an escape, with such detail into the planet and the animals and the people, that makes up for it.
Am I showing how cliché my interests might be? Yes. But I am entertained and that's enough for me in my short life on this earth. But the idea that the world is all connected and can hear the people, and that the good people defeat the bad, is never a bad story to tell.
