Summary: Based on Aching Hearts by SKAM Virgil struggled when the Dark Sides learnt that the Light Sides could directly interact with Thomas and Janus was there to comfort him Now Janus is struggling with how his role fits in after being accepted.

The Dark Sides, as they'd later become known all reacted differently when they learnt the 'Light Sides' often spoke and were well known to Thomas.

Remus had been the one to discover it and if anything treated the revelation as an excuse to get even crazier in his ideas. He never held back on suggestions after that point, trying to get any of them heard, no matter how obscene, how horrific, or simply disgusting. It was a game to get attention from the person life made most important who'd only sent rejection his way, after all, any attention is good attention in Thomas's mind.

When it had been shared to Janus the deceitful side had honestly been surprised that it wasn't something they themself was doing. It had always just been a matter of reason that they weren't acknowledged given their role was essentially hiding things Thomas wasn't ready to understand about himself away. To hear that it was part of the make up of their separation from the other sides had quite frankly offended them, but Janus was well prepared to still influence Thomas as necessary.

The first to actually find a way to have contact with Thomas had been the one to have the worst reaction to learning that they were being denied a chance to talk with their person face to face. Virgil had learnt it at the same time as Janus, Remus having found them talking together to share his discovery and had screamed about it being a lie. He'd insisted for weeks that no Side could talk to the person they built up and to think otherwise was nonsense.

Virgil only accepted that Remus hadn't been lying while in the imagination. Creativity hadn't realised he was another side yet and must have said something about discussing an idea with Thomas. He didn't share what happened with Remus or Janus though so they couldn't help as all Virgil's attention was poured into Thomas's life.

Janus left it for a week before cornering Virgil in the kitchen, late one night. “So you look perfectly calm.” they stated, casually wandering past for a glass of water as if that had been their original purpose for being there.

“Shut it Dee!” Virgil snapped on reflex, before glaring over at him, “How are you so calm about being shut in this darkness?”

“Nighttime?” They queried raising an eyebrow, smirking and continuing just as he went to speak again, “Well, I'm by your side, aren't I? Never going to stray, even if you're in the darkness, for want of a light switch. Afraid something'll happen if you look away?”

Virgil scoffed, turning away from them, “I'm making Thomas afraid of the things he can't see, not actually scared myself.”

“You are. It's why you're so annoyed that I don't care about being hidden.” Janus stated, rolling their eyes when Virgil looked affronted as if he'd forgotten their role.

“Oh, Slither off and leave me to it then.” Virgil snapped.

They pulled out a seat to sit beside him instead. “This is real, and perhaps I'm not right, but aching hearts, such as the Light Sides, are hard too fight.”

“It's too late for your riddles.” He grumbled, half-heartedly shoving at their shoulder.

“Got you to relax a bit though. Next time I'm going to get you to sleep.” They quipped, smiling slightly when Virgil nodded.

Before Virgil had become known by Thomas, it had been a bit of a slogan for Janus to use whenever he was stressed. They'd never stray away, no matter the situation Virgil was in when they stepped in to comfort them. They hadn't registered that he'd never returned the sentiment.

Now though, they'd both reached some level of acceptance and even Remus was known and included in the group, but Janus couldn't stop fulfilling their role. They found that becoming known made them even more aware of the lies all of the sides were telling and how they were hoping their lies would help Thomas.

They hadn't meant to remain up late, cleaning the kitchen as something to occupy their hands. Really they were just trying to make sure Thomas could sleep safe in the belief everything was okay for a night and being in the common space usually helped their influence get felt.

“So you're trying to play pretend that everything is fine for Thomas?” The dismissive tone had them startling, twisting to face Virgil in confusion.

“Despite his aching heart, I will not fall. Not in this.” Janus resolved, pushing the dishes they'd been rearranging back into the cupboard.

He scoffed, shaking his head, “Seriously? One, there's multiple sides struggling and two, now who's putting themself in darkness? Afraid to breathe without your lies so y'know what, I'm gonna stay just here.” Virgil snuck an arm around their waist, planting himself there.

“That's my job.” They protested.

“I strayed, things changed.” He waved his free hand as if dismissing their old roles. “I'm telling you, this is not the end. Only time will tell what's next, but it's not found in repeating that everything is fine.”

Janus leant into his shoulder, looking around them. “This isn't real.” They muttered, letting their repetitions of 'everything is fine' stop being pushed towards Thomas's drifting thoughts.

Virgil huffed an amused noise, “It is and that's what makes it so. Come on. The best way for Thomas to sleep is if we all rest too.”

Janus let themself be led out of the kitchen. “I remember doing this for you. It was precious.”

“Funny how the precious memories of that time are all of you.” Virgil murmured in reply, quieter now they were in the hallway of the sides rooms.

“It's nice to have you helping me this time.” Now they'd relaxed from trying to use their role, their thoughts were spilling out in a tired mess but Janus didn't quite care when they got a small smile from Virgil.

He nudged them into his room before replying, “Well I guess that no matter where I am, you'll be there as well. Even when we fell out you found a way to never stray.”

“If I'm one of Thomas's aching hearts then I guess I ache for you.”

“Then don't let go and we'll never fall.” With Virgil's reply it was a decision made to be together.
