I had the realization I could travel on the cheap by simpely sleeping in my car a few years back, and now I get ESPECIALLY strong impulses to do so during the winter (even after a time where I woke up to hypothermia symptoms from sleeping in a cold ass car and had to drive 30 miles to a gas station while disoriented and shivering) and I think it's because my corolla wants to kill me and absorb my human soul. And someday I will let her

With this extreme cold hitting New England the next couple of days, don't forget to:
Turn one of your faucets on to a very slow trickle, this helps prevent pipes from freezing.
Open your cabinets where exposed pipes are to keep them warm.
Tick the temperature up a few degrees to also prevent pipes freezing.
Use a hairdryer to melt a pipe if one does get frozen.
If they are frozen and you can't do anything about it, drain your pipes of all water to help keep it from getting worse and keep your home warmer longer.
Check your car engines for cats, they like the warmth of car engines.
If you have to use a space heater, remember to give it space. Ideally 3 feet from any flammable material.
Keep a close eye on your space heater and do not run it while you sleep.
If you have no heat but have a tent, sleep in that for insulation.
In this weather, you can get frostbite in as soon as 10 minutes. If you have to go out in this weather, cover your skin completely.
Your pets cannot tolerate this cold and you must limit time outside.
Please feel free to add more advice. I know this is by no means an exhaustive list. Most of it's been what the news has been saying.

Surviving in Cold Weather / Snow is considered to be the most difficult to survive. Hypothermia = the major threat. 1. Dirty clothes may prevent them from breathing & insulating. Keep them clean to stay sanitized & warm. 2. Limit strenuous activities to avoid exhaustion & sweating. 3. Wear clothing loose to breathe. Layer for better insulation. 4. Stay dry. Wear water-resistant clothes. Avoid snow and melting ice. 5. Most body heat is lost through the head. Keep it covered to stay warmer. 6. Avoid frostbite by covering your ears and fingers. Place hands under arm pits or somewhere warm. 7. Shelter: Out of the way of avalanche chutes. On the edge of a clearing. Dig a pit in the ground to avoid freezing winds. If you can't dig, build a framework first, then cover with debris. Allow shelter to breathe. 8. Stay warm. Keep hydrated. Snack on food to keep energy levels and body temperature high. Coats
Layer up early,
Where you coat a while,
Don’t leave it till you’re leaving,
Get it warm before you go.
Layer up early,
Before walking out the door.
The warmth is made by you alone,
So get some there before you go.
Layer up early,
Wear your coat while sitting around,
Layer up early,
So outside you’re warm, safe and sound.
