Horse-- was?

Tumblr media

Detail of “The Death of Napoleon” by Charles de Steuben. Arthur Bertrand is peeking over Napoleon’s left arm.
Napoleon was fond of all the children in his entourage on St. Helena, but Arthur Bertrand (born on January 17, 1817) became his favourite. Glimpses of the two of them provide an amusing contrast to the often formidable portrait of Napoleon as Emperor.
One day, the Emperor wanted to have the noisy company of Countess Bertrand’s children at lunch. Saint-Denis told me the luncheon had gone very well, but that towards the end they started throwing bread balls at each other. The Emperor had taken the youngest on his knees, and was kissing and teasing him as he was pulling at his ears.
When Napoleon insisted that Arthur's sister Hortense have her ears pierced in an outdoor operation, Arthur was greatly alarmed.
He clinched [sic] his fists, and stamped with indignation, declaring that he would not allow his sister to be hurt. ‘You little rogue,’ said Napoleon, ‘if you are not quiet, I will have your ears bored also. Come, be obedient.’
In January 1821 Napoleon had a seesaw installed in the Longwood billiard room. Napoleon at first claimed it was a swing to amuse the children. He then admitted it was for his own use, to get more exercise. General Henri Bertrand recounts:
Arthur Bertrand went to see the Emperor, who showed him the seesaw and told him that it was a gun. Afterwards he and the Grand Maréchal got up on it to amuse the child. Napoleon had been on it for a quarter of an hour in the morning and didn’t feel any the better for it.
In the best-known vignette, Napoleon gives Arthur a pony. This was recounted by Napoleon’s first valet, Louis-Joseph Marchand.
A city resident had come to Longwood riding a small pony, and Arthur…asked the Emperor to buy it for him. As he spoke only English, the Emperor told him in that tongue: ‘Come at noon.’ But as was his habit, he went back inside, leaving the children to continue their games, got undressed and soon fell asleep. I was leaving the Emperor’s bedroom quietly when the fort cannon announced the hour of noon, and in the bathroom I found young Arthur fighting with Noverraz to enter the Emperor’s bedroom. I feared my refusal would make him cry and awaken His Majesty: I therefore made him understand that the Emperor was sleeping, and if he agreed to be good, I would let him enter and wait for His Majesty to awaken. ‘Yes,’ he answered; I took him by the hand, he went near the bed where the Emperor was resting, saw he was sleeping, then sat on the rug and stayed with me almost an hour, playing alone and noiselessly. When the Emperor awoke, he was quite surprised to find him there: ‘There you are, Arthur, what do you want, my boy?’ ‘You tell me gun fire.’ I was not aware of the promise made to him. ‘What does he say?’ the Emperor asked. ‘He is telling Your Majesty that he told him to come back when the gun went off.’ ‘Take him to Montholon, to find out what he wants.’ At that very moment, Count de Montholon was announced at the Emperor’s bedroom; he learned that during lunch he had told the child to come at noon, and he would buy him the little pony. ‘Gun fire’ was the cannon announcing that hour, and he came to claim the promise made to him. ‘Indeed! What a memory,’ said the Emperor, ‘is the horse still there?’ Count de Montholon, who had discussed the price with the owner, assured him it was. ‘But,’ said the Emperor, caressing the child and embracing him, ‘do you have any money?’ ‘Yes, I have two dollars.’ ‘That is not enough.’ ‘Papa give everything!’ ‘But Papa Bertrand has no money.’ ‘I have plenty gold.’ ‘Will you be good?’ ‘Yes.’ “How much does he want for this horse?’ the Emperor asked General Montholon. ‘Fifty louis [1000 francs], Sire.’ ‘Give this boy 1,200 francs,’ the Emperor said to me. I went upstairs to get the money that was locked up in a bag. The child was four years old, and on seeing me arrive, he held out his pinafore to catch the money. ‘You won’t be able to carry it.’ ‘Yes, yes.’ I put the money gently in his pinafore to test his strength. He turned rapidly and, accompanied by Count de Montholon, he went to purchase the horse he wished to buy. Riding his horse, and held up by Count de Montholon, he came back almost immediately to the Emperor’s door, to thank His Majesty. Later on, having fallen from the horse, he no longer wanted it and switched back to his burro, a much quieter mount and more responsive to his wishes. The horse was given to Napoleon Bertrand, the eldest of the children, who sometimes accompanied the Emperor when his mother rode in the carriage with him.

Year in fic review 2023
Total number of completed stories: 4, I finished Spare Parts in 2022, just finished posting in 2023.
Total word count: About 50 k (published, god knows how many words of unfinished WIPS and abandoned one-shots)
Fandoms written in: BBC Sherlock, I'm a one-trick pony these days ;-)
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected?
Hm, I suppose less? And not the things I expected. I started writing a lot of long, plotty fics but apparently, it wasn't the year for long and plotty fics. I suppose I didn't have the brain space for long and plotty.
What’s your own favorite story of the year?
Probably Nothing Gold Can Stay, because I had this idea months and months ago, of John having a bit of a crisis before his wedding. I had this one piece of a core of a fic, the whole nucleus where John tells Sherlock nobody ever sticks with him, ever. And then I had three different fragments of fics trying to make it work, and every one had something amazing in it, but I just couldn't make it gel. And then I thought of the famous The thing you wanted to say, say it now, and the scene on the bench in TSOT, and bam, I had a fic. It came out in stops and starts of 200-word chunks, while John laboured with whether and how and when to trust enough, to have faith enough to actually say how he feels. I'm really proud of how it came out in the end, and I'm very happy you guys responded to it the way you did.
Did you take any writing risks this year?
I don't know about risks, but I wrote 31 ficlets in pretty much a month, which came out to 26000 words, and that was no mean feat. And I actually still like most of them. Gave me a bit of writers' burn-out, I won't lie, but what a ride!
Do you have any fanfic goals for the new year?
I want to finish my Christmas fic. I would like to re-visit the Nothing Gold boys because I think there's meat on these bones and I always wanted to do a series of shorter fics that hang together. So maybe I can do something with that. But last year was so stressful at work and I don't see this year going any better (we have three big conferences this summer, so it's probably going to be So Much Worse). So, I'll be grateful for what I can accomplish, and accept that it might not be everything I want.
Most popular story of the year?
Nothing Gold Can Stay for sure.
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Hm, I got a lot of lovely feedback this year, so I generally feel loved and appreciated by fandom. My May ficlets especially got a lot of responses here on tumblr, and I loved that dynamic interchange between writing and reading and commeting, especially with the others who did the challenge.
If I had to pick one underappreciated story, my Spare Parts 'verse January 29th fic The Stars Walk Backward didn't get a lot of eyeballs, but it's understandable given that it's a one-shot in a 'verse that not that many people are famliar with in the first place. It's a bit of a stepchild of a 'verse, but I love it, and I love this story for its unabashed sentimentality. It's very sweet and very calm and has a lot of 'we're back together and I don't want to fuck this up again' energy. I love re-visiting this fic if I need a quick pick-me-up, so. You know.
Most fun story to write:
Most of the ficlets were fun to write, and Tipping Point was somehow the opposite of Nothing Gold Can Stay in that it came out in a big rush over four days, like a writing tsunami. But my Christmas fic is also super fun to write, I just hope I can sustain the fun and actually finish it.
Most unintentionally telling story:
Probably Nothing Gold Can Stay, I suppose. Grief is really complicated, and it's difficult to come to terms with the fact that you can sort of stumble into pockets of it, and that you sometimes grieve things that are technically still there but have changed a lot. Essentially, the story is about a John who has to stop running away from his grief and turn around and face it, and a Sherlock who sees that if he wants to truly get John back, he has to face it with him.
Biggest disappointment:
With myself for being unable to finish the many, many, many fics I've stared but didn't remotely finish. But also gracious to myself for letting life happen.
Biggest surprise:
Not surprise but gratitude for the love and support of this fandom. You guys are awesome. I'm so grateful whenever someone tells me that something I wrote made them Feel Something(TM). It's the greatest compliment a writer can receive, and I feel truly blessed that I heard this a fair bit this year. I write because it makes me happy, and if people reading my fics experience something similar, then that makes me even happier. So thank you, fandom.

bro it hurts seeing ponyboy start acting like dally in the books after twobit told him to not try and be like them he said “what’s the matter with Two-Bit? I knew well as he did that if you got tough you didn’t get hurt. Get smart and nothing can touch you.” LIKE PONYBOY NOOO. “You’d better wise up, Pony.. you get tough like me and you don’t get hurt. You look out for yourself and nothin’ can touch you.” THATS WHAT DALLY SAID IN THE CAR TO PONYBOY AND LIKE STOP THIS HURT
Ponyboy needs to go to therapy bc boy what u mean johnny isn’t dead and how your the one who killed him?! take him to therapy rq plz, In the movie johnnys AND dallys last words had ponyboy in it stop this madness when dally realized that he still had someone to live and protect for but it was already to late for him, i doubt Ponyboy will ever know how much dally also loved him too. Dally wasn’t a hero but he still cared for his family, Johnny was a hero but all he wanted was to be loved and ponyboy didn’t stay gold maybe if he just read the note a bit earlier he would of realized what johnny meant
He thought about every other boy like johnny and dally saying how maybe if someone just told them that theirs still good in the world to live for things would change. I HATE THIS BOOK SO GOD SMAJISWODODOIEKFOWODOAIOIWKDJFKJJSIDUWQHISIEOKFNF

@positively-peachy-143 Actually been dying to answer this question tysm<33 Also I apologise for the ramblings, it will probably happen again
5) The pre-rumble scene
Underrated scene, we need to talk about it more. This is the first proper glimpse we get of the gang and their dynamics since Pony was jumped, outside of Pony’s recounting, and it’s just a very fun scene that’s constantly contrasted by the seriousness of the impending rumble.
The juxtaposition between Pony’s desire and desperation to fight, to prove himself as a greaser and man, to prove a point against the Socs, to help out the gang, and the nagging feeling of ‘wrongness’ as realisation dawns on him that fighting and violence is pointless (later hammered in by Johnny before his death). The positioning of this scene as right after Pony has already talked to two Socs and no longer despises them or sees like as an ‘other’ is also important.
We get more depth into the individual characters (including quite a bit of Steve which was nice considering that he plays a small role overall) as Pony asks them why the fight and concluding the only good reason to fight is in self-defence.
4) The Final Curtis brother argument and aftermath
I really like how we see that even though Darry and Pony did resolve their first fight, expressed their care and have grown to be more understanding towards each other, this doesn’t immediately mean that they are fine forever. They’re still two fundamentally different people with enough similarities that lead to them clashing.
Sodapop has constantly been a mediator and seen as someone without problems or worries. This is the first time we see him as an actual person who always had problems and worries but pushed them away because he couldn’t support Darry and Pony if he was too wrapped up in himself. We see how everything has taken a toll on him and leads to him breaking down and opening up.
And this is the catalyst that finally causes Pony and Darry to understand each other and, whilst they always will have their point of differences, they promise to try to be better for each other and Soda
3) Johnny’s Death
The character death of all-time, I have cried over it and will cry over it again.
The way this takes place after the rumble, which Dally had dubbed in Johnny’s honour. There’s this frantic energy and tension throughout it all, especially with Dally who joins in last minute and immediately grabs Pony to rush to the hospital. Dally gradually becomes more erratic as he rambles to Pony about how he should’ve let Johnny become tough, implying his belief that it’s his fault, and advising Pony to become a ‘Dally’, so tough no one could ever hurt him.
And yet when they get to Johnny’s room, Dally’s devastatingly soft and cautious, telling Johnny that they won the rumble, the rumble Dally wanted to fight for Johnny. And yet Johnny rejects fighting and violence. Dally telling Johnny he’s proud of him, which was all that Johnny wanted. Having already accepted his death as a just exchange for the lives of those children and knowing Dally is proud of him, Johnny’s final act is to ask Pony to ‘stay gold’. It’s a plead from a dying boy to his friend to not let the world change what’s good about him, his softness and ability to love a world despite of its cruelty, and it hits every single time.
Dally’s final exchange with Johnny, as he goes through all these conflicting emotions, begging Johnny to not be dead, tethering the edge of break down. But boys like Dally don’t cry or feel vulnerability. They’ve forgotten how to. So instead of breaking down, he blows up. He’s always been akin to a ticking time bomb, self-destructive and destroying everyone around him. And now his time is up. (This allows paves the way to the line ‘Johnny was the one thing Dally loved. And now Johnny was gone’ and I need to mention it at least once a post)
2) Ponyboy, the Socs and the glass bottle
This is arguably the most important scene in the entire book. The Outsiders is about growing up in a society that dictates who you should be according to its standards. It’s about how the system breeds resentment between different people all the while oppressing and subjugating them all.
Ponyboy’s someone who knows and wants to live up to society’s expectations but always falls short. But the events of the book have shaped Pony into someone who could become ‘tough’ as he has always wanted and been expected to. From someone who could never use the a glass bottle, he ends up threatening the Socs himself, to the shock and dismay of Two-Bit.
And yet, Pony remains true to his statement; ‘the only good reason to fight is for self-defense’. When the Socs stop bothering him, he disposes of the glass bottle and its shards, so that nobody can get hurt from it. He’s no longer that helpless kid who couldn’t hurt anyone but instead someone who chooses not (mirroring Johnny’s advice rather than Dally’s)
1) Johnny’s letter
I don’t have too much to say despite this being my favourite scene. It gives us and Pony some closure to Johnny’s death but more importantly this is the catalyst to Ponyboy deciding to write the Outsiders.
Johnny dies knowing the world can be good and beautiful despite its cruelty and pain, and sees this in Ponyboy. He asks Ponyboy once more to remain ‘gold’ and to prove to Dally this sentiment. Pony laments that it was too late for Dally, that even if he hadn’t died, he still wouldn’t have listened.
And then it hits him that there must be so many Bobs and Johnnys and Dallys in the world, and how big a problem it was and that someone had to something about. It’s just such a great scene GOD-

about me: a writeblr re-re-re-introduction
Hello! My old pinned post is officially over a year old and makes me cringe whenever I'm on my blog, so it's time to freshen things up again!
me
I'm Teri, I'm smack dab in the middle of my 20s and figuring out life. My writing is pretty exclusively original stuff, a lot of novels and a lot of fantasy, but I play around with various genres in short stories. Sort of a jack-of-all-trades in regards to hobbies - aside from writing, there's anything from baking to drawing with my ancient art tablet to cross-stitch to playing music to rambling around the patch of woods near my house to watching long-form D&D let's plays.
my goals
I recognize that every time I post something like this, it's with the intention of finally becoming as active on writeblr as I was during the pandemic. I also recognize I've never quite managed that.
So here are some more general goals to get me through 2024:
Finish my 2nd draft of Beyond Alder Creek
Write as cringey and brutally honest as I never allowed myself to as a teenager.
Speaking of, a large reading/writing goal of mine is to go back through every NaNo draft I've ever written (I've participated since 2011). So aside from just reading that and likely turning it into a whole spectacle on here for people's amusement, generally just survive reading through the writing from 8th grade. Stay tuned for more on that in the coming weeks lol
Finally, I have a general goal every year of reaching 100K words, between writing and editing and the like, but I'd happily be a little looser with that goal if it meant getting through others.
And now, without further ado:
my writing
Before I get specifically into WIPs, a general overview of the kind of writing you can expect from me:
As I said, I'm a fantasy nerd. I love worldbuilding, both on a large scale (nations and cultures and political relationships) and a small scale (a magic shop in an otherwise contemporary setting).
There's not a lot of romance in my writing, but there Are a lot of transformational relationships and codependency. Friendships, siblings, guardians, general ride-or-dies.
Thought experiments. I've been trying to catch and indulge more in my 'wait, what if?' ideas. Sometimes, that's fun little snippets of silly ideas, sometimes it's a majorly emotionally heavy scene for a story I'll never write. Sometimes, it's coming up with ideas to 'combine genres'. It's all about expanding the range.
wips*
Beyond Alder Creek /// draft 2 /// tag: bac
Winnie Pewitt has never believed in the fae. That is, until her little brother disappears, and she stumbles upon a faerie ring on the edge of town. Inside, a man seemingly carved from gold suggests that he knows who took the boy. With everyone else around their hometown accepting her brother's fate as certainty, Winnie takes it upon herself to craft the perfect deal and enter the realm of the fae with her new companion in tow.
The Lies in the Legend /// draft 1 /// tag: litl
The fictional autobiography of an elven noblewoman who rose rapidly in station and influence from an unremarkable youth to a diplomatic powerhouse. Spanning centuries during the prime of her life, Lady Ghislaine Agassi charts the course of her career and reputation, and highlights the dangers of making myths out of our idols.
*Though these are my primary WIPs, I have a page that covers various other WIPs and projects that I've brought up over the past few years.
I think that about covers everything! As always, I can't make any promises about how the year will wind up and where it takes us. But I will say, I've actually been writing recently, and yk I'm just gonna ride that high.
And for fun, here's some random facts about me:
fun facts
I have degrees in psychology and music!
I've lived across three continents, but currently live in upstate New York for whatever reason lol
The animals I've ridden on the back of include: horse, pony, elephant, and ostrich. The horse was my least favorite. By far.
I got diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes a couple months after Covid landed stateside (in May 2020) and am Always ready to talk someone's ear off about it.
The first story I ever wrote was on PowerPoint and was about war breaking out between humans and aliens that had taken refuge on Earth after their planet was destroyed. I was 8. There was a Lot of Clipart involved.
I've never been published, but I once secretly planned out, wrote, edited, and self-printed a couple copies of a novel about my best friends and our college apartment. They received it for Christmas last year and loved it (or at least were kind enough to tell me they did)!
