Chapter 10: Epilogue
As the Master of Shadows and King Under the Mountain, Thorin lives burdened with guilt and loss, for Erebor is dark, dead, and on the brink. That is until he finds a possible solution to save his people in a being that radiates light and life. But is it truly possible to save them all from the shadows he created? (When Darkness Shines Brightest)
“Lost your king, did you?” Roac teased, flapping his wings as if to laugh alongside his words. “He’s always been hard to keep track of, even in a land of snow! It’s how he found you, after all.” Wandering through doors and all that—not that Thorin had any say in that, which both of them were very aware of.

“I’m so sorry! I don’t even want to pretend that I understand, I can’t even fathom the hurt and the loneliness this has brought you!” Bilbo gasped, trying hard to get his words out as emotion swirled around his insides uncomfortably. “I’m…so very sorry…”

(When Darkness Shines Brightest)
“Did...did we not make it?” Bilbo asked quietly, feeling breathless and frozen all at once as his eyes searched for any sort of recognition that this was his homeland. It was snow and ice covered, from the very ground beneath his palms to the tops of the trees. He knew well enough that this was home, but accepting it was a completely different story.

CHAPTER 7 ↳ NOW ON AO3!
When Darkness Shines Brightest by LordOfTheRazzles, StarDryad
Balin had been correct. Thorin needed to enjoy the company while he had it here. It was a far cry from the world that the dwarf had grown to know, it was something different. To have someone genuinely full of life to interact with was a blessing, rather than lingering with the curse that had befallen the shadow and snow ridden kingdom. Thorin wasn’t naive to the fact that there was very little possibility that even Bilbo could change the state of Erebor as it was currently. However, the company alone was far more soothing than simply throwing his hands up and going back to normal. It was a shame to consider that lonely misery was normal. Thorin had been playing the role of the more gracious host these past few days since Bilbo decided to stay longer than his initial three-day allowance. Less glowering and glaring, and instead, actually showing Bilbo parts of the mountain and giving his perspective on it all. The walls that held several stories were one of his favorites, even if it was slightly worn and only within the Khuzdul runes that Thorin knew. Translating wasn’t hard, or at least giving a synopsis never hurt, and Bilbo had seemed genuinely interested! It was so different to have a company that reacted so differently to new information. It wasn’t the same routine over and over, and perhaps Thorin found that excitement endearing. Especially when there was that little jolt of eagerness from Bilbo that ended up with their arms brushing. Physical touch in any form at this point felt like a flame gracing Thorin’s skin amidst the cold. It was an addicting and startling sensation that he craved. That hug upon the ramparts had been the biggest blessing, and curse, that he could have asked for, and ever since, his eyes didn’t seem to stray far from Erebor’s newfound, and very lively, company.

"Thorin wasn’t sure if it was his heart that stopped first or the music. Silence enveloped him, save for the sound of those light chuckles. As his hood was lifted by an unfamiliar hand, he was greeted with a sight unlike any other."

CHAPTER 6 ↳ NOW ON AO3!
When Darkness Shines Brightest by LordOfTheRazzles, StarDryad
The first place Bilbo had thought to look was the throne room. It’s where Thorin seemed to usually be brooding and lamenting quietly according to the shadow dwarves that resided here, but when Bilbo found only an empty seat of stone, his search continued. He may not be the best navigator after only three days of various storytelling and tours, but he liked to think he could get around a little bit at least. The kitchens were a bust, just as the Hall of Kings had been, but when having crossed Balin in passing, the former dwarf had made a comment about the battlements that overlooked Erebor’s outside region. It made Bilbo’s skin crawl. Something about that view in seeing nothing but blankets of snow and isolation, it was terrifying. But it was far better than being stuck in the darkness for so long, perhaps that’s why Thorin found it a suitable place to stand and simply watch his lands collect even more of those innocent-looking, but deadly ice flakes. It was the only light to reach the mountain. Swallowing thickly as soon as his eyes landed on Thorin’s back, Bilbo came to a halt. His eyes roved over the dwarf’s stance. Everything about him seemed tense, even if you couldn’t see much of his actual body considering the thick garb he sported. Bilbo wasn’t sure if Thorin wore his mask poorly, or perhaps he himself just had a different perspective that was hard for Thorin to conceal the dark truths from. Regardless, he had a feeling that this was the normal way that Thorin carried himself. Tense, agitated, and about as unmoving as the stone itself. “You are ready to leave?” Thorin’s voice was cold and blunt, just like the snow and stone, it nearly made Bilbo want to jump out of his skin. Had he shuffled along the ground so loudly to alert Thorin? Or was the dwarf simply in tune with his world so much that nothing could hide from him? Well, he was the Master of Shadows, it would make him a poor master of his craft to not detect even the most unlikely of creatures lingering in said shadows.

For now, the hobbit was fast asleep with a patchwork blanket nestled up to his chin, a candle having been blown out long ago, and nothing but sweet dreams of breakfast or the inevitable sunshine that would poke its rays through Bag End’s windows in a few hours. Something felt off though, and at first, Bilbo didn’t stir, but as the moments ticked on, he tugged at his blanket, a new sort of chill entering the room that was unfamiliar to him. "A few moments of silence rested between the two, Bilbo stared at his sleeves and the frayed threads that were coming off of the cuffs. At least until he heard Ori speak up again, quieter than his already softer spoken voice.
“You are going to help him, aren’t you?” Not us, but Thorin."

CHAPTER 5 ↳ NOW ON AO3!
When Darkness Shines Brightest by LordOfTheRazzles, StarDryad
The hobbit had taken his leave, and Thorin remained seated on his throne, bearing the same dismal look he had when speaking with Bilbo, not finding there anything to be hopeful of for a three-day guest that didn’t believe he could help. Erebor had no ground to nurture seeds of hope, and that realization brought a new scowl to Thorin’s lips. A harsh sound akin to a hiss breathed past his teeth as his brows furrowed even more than before.
“I take it your chat with our new guest did not go as planned?” Balin’s voice was cautious, but it was by no means meek. He was a strong and wise sort of mind that often had to yank Thorin out of these dreadful moods of his. “I couldn’t help but overhear that he was planning to stay for a few days. That is nice.”
“And then he will return home where he belongs, just as I will remain here where I belong,” Thorin growled. There was an unspoken comment to be made upon his words, about how he belonged in this desolate wasteland of misery that he couldn’t make better no matter how hard he tried. “I never should have brought him here, it was a waste to think anyone or anything could turn this all around.”
“Why is that?”
Thorin remained rather shielded emotionally, but as his eyes pried open to glare harshly towards the shaded figure before him looking far too calm and cool for how Thorin felt regarding the situation, it was almost infuriating. There was no reply worthy at the moment, just a harsh glare that spoke loud enough.
“Perhaps instead of sitting here and grinding your teeth over what may never change, you go and try to enjoy the bit of company we do have while we have it. A bit of social interaction may do you some good, even if it is limited,” much like the fact that social interactions with the shades were rather limited, except in this case it was different, “you never know what you might learn or be inspired by.”

CHAPTER 3 ↳ NOW ON AO3!
When Darkness Shines Brightest by LordOfTheRazzles, StarDryad
“Where are you from, Thorin? You’re not a hobbit, nor do you give off the same aura as Gandalf, so I would like to know just what sort of beings are trickling into the Shire.” Bilbo was firm but polite with his words, wanting answers but not targeting Thorin as some sort of threat against this peaceful little settlement. “I oversee everything here, and for the safety of my own, I simply ask for cooperation. Nothing more.” So long as the other’s intent was good, Bilbo didn’t have any reason to raise alarm.
Judging by Thorin’s rather hesitant demeanor that was so hard focused on the little things, Bilbo was sure he didn’t have anything to worry about. He just seemed rather…lost, in a sad sort of way. Lost and lonely.
How was Thorin supposed to answer the question? His eyes hardened, focusing on the remaining lavender tea in his cup as silence fell between them, save for the chirping of crickets and the faint sounds from the party below. It was quiet but in a peaceful sort of manner. Not the type that made you feel like you were living in a damn tomb.
Worrying the inside of his cheek with his teeth for a few moments, Thorin let his shoulders rise and fall with the sigh he exhaled quietly. “Somewhere far away. Somewhere dark and dead and on the brink,” Thorin grizzled, unsure if he was truly talking about Erebor or himself. “It was once great. Something to admire with some of the greatest minds I’d ever met, but now…” A shake of his head and his voice trailed. There didn’t need to be much more than that, even if it hardly gave Bilbo the answer he had been seeking.

CHAPTER 2 ↳ NOW ON AO3!
When Darkness Shines Brightest by LordOfTheRazzles, StarDryad
“Why are you all the way out here by yourself?” The raven, Roac, asked with a quick tilt of his head. “You look rather glum, though if I do this,” Roac turned his head as far to the side as he could to put Thorin’s frown in a better perspective. “That’s better.”
Thorin shrugged his shoulder as if to shake the shade away, a firm scowl forming on his lips as he pulled to tug his hood over his head. The snowflakes that had gathered on his head were starting to grow a bit chilly, even for him. Plus, he was in no mood to deal with Roac’s nonsense.
“And in a foul mood to match the expression, I see,” Roac simply decided to flutter along slowly at Thorin’s side this time.
“I want to be left alone.”
“I don’t think that’s wise. A little birdie told me there was some tension back at the mountain and I wanted to check on you. I think loneliness is the last thing you need right now,” Roac lost a bit of that humored tone of his, sounding a bit more gentle like the dwarves back home. “I wish I could do more for you, but, I can simply provide you with some quiet company if that is your wish.”
“Quiet company, Roac,” Thorin reiterated firmly, shooting a glare that should have sent this shade disappearing into thin air.

CHAPTER 4 ↳ NOW ON AO3!
When Darkness Shines Brightest by LordOfTheRazzles, StarDryad
Everything felt heavy.
Each limb that Bilbo had was unable to move as if paralyzed as the cold and darkness took over him. It was a dreamless sleep that harbored very little comfort, and that chill only grew worse and worse as time went on. For a time he had to wonder if this was all some terrible nightmare. Maybe he had left a window open in Bag End that brought in the cold which sparked this terrible sleep? Or perhaps there were a lot of things about the universe that he still didn’t understand.
“Is…dead?”
The words were so garbled and disjointed that Bilbo’s own mind couldn’t make them out. The sentences fragmented beyond comprehension, but it was starting to pull him out of that thick fog that had enveloped his mind.
“Give…space…let Oin…”
“Wake…”
“What….Thorin thinking!?”
“I’m not impressed.”
Each sentence became clearer than the last, and as Bilbo finally started to pry his eyes open, everything was dark and foggy before him. A small groan exited his lips as his hands reached up to rub at his eyes. “Tired,” He mumbled, hearing a few sighs of relief as soon as he spoke. “Is it time for breakfast?” He asked, dropping his hands and wondering which family of hobbits had surrounded him this time. That would teach him to not mind his cups when it came to Gaffer’s Home Brew.
