The last photos of Stan Lee, the Cameo peacock.
I like to think he had a decent last day. We tube fed him early this morning so he would not feel hungry or thirsty despite that he could no longer find food or water. He spent the rest of the day loafing in the sunlight, surrounded by hens that liked him a great deal because he was always super gentle and sweet to his ladies. He always loved babies, and Aurora's 2023 kids were no exception, and I caught both of them cuddled up to Stan at one point as well. Even though he couldn't see them, I hope he knew he was not alone. I hope that they feel they got to say their goodbyes- I haven't heard anyone calling for him, so that's a good sign.
As the sun began to set, I came out to get him, and he was by himself for the first time, sleeping along the wall in the sun. He didn't fuss when I picked him up, and rode quietly in the car to the vet. He laid quietly in my lap in the waiting room, and I watched a rainbow crawl across his wing and back while we waited. As he fell asleep from the initial sedation, some of the vet staff that had seen him often the last 7 years for his many issues came to say goodbye quietly. They let me stay with him through the Final Sleep, as well, and he went just as quickly and quietly. Perhaps he thought it was time as well.
I am going to miss him like crazy. I never wanted a cameo bird, partly because I know they are prone to carrying health issues and blindness in particular, but he wobbled his way right into my heart once he was in my hands.
I set aside his final train of feathers, along with a good deal of his saddle and some of his neck feathers, as keepsakes. One primary from each wing, some of his actual tail feathers. I will make myself a feather vase from it when I am up to it.
Sark helped me to bury Stan's body beneath the weeping willow sapling we planted last summer. It's near the coops, rather than in the death orchard, as he never particularly liked sleeping near other birds at night, only by day.
It has not been an easy two days, but I know once I have some distance, his memory will certainly be a blessing for me, and for everyone whose lives he touched along the way. His train was always full of hearts from all the love.

Hi......if you don't mind me asking, can I ask, who are your top 5 favorite characters from MDZS? And why? And what are your top 5 (or top 3) fav moments from the novel? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks.....
Hello!! No need to apologize, I adore talking about MDZS!
My top favourite characters:
1. Wangxian: It is very unfair to make me pick between Wangxian. Wei Wuxian is everything I adore. He is funny, empathetic, mischievous and brilliant. I love how he faces everything in life, how confident he is in himself and how adorable he is in love. Lan Wangji is everything I admire. He is strong, righteous, as passionate on the inside as he is perceived as cold on the outside. His character arc is my favourite, and every version of him from the Teen LWJ to the revered Hanguang-Jun who went where the chaos is with no desire for prestige or rewards is just so good, so human. I could write a thousand verses on how he loves WWX, how WWX loves him, on how their love is so beautiful.
2. Wen Ning: Wen Ning, is without a single doubt, my favourite character after Wangxian. I love everything about him, the stuttering, fierce, protective brother that Wei Wuxian deserves. He commits treason for WWX, for the kindness WWX offered him, and the friendship and faith they both have in each other brings me to tears every single time.
3. Lan Sizhui: Lan Sizhui, Wen Yuan, the bestest boy. Who suffered so much, but was loved so deeply that even when the world wanted him dead, that love saved him. I loved A-Yuan from the very beginning, for his kindness, his diplomacy and how observant he was. Finding out everything about his past, reading the Burial Mounds arc, everything, only made me adore him all the more.
4. Jin Ling: Oh my beloved peachick. Jin Ling is someone I want to wrap up in a thousand blankets and keep safe from the scary world. I loved his growth, how he flourished under WWX's care and guidance, how by the extras, he is taking on night hunts no one else will, like Hanguang-Jun.
5. Wen Qing: When I say I stan Wen Qing, I mean I STAN Wen Qing. Brilliant, kind, and protective, I liked Wen Qing the moment we are introduced to her. Pragmatic, and yet soft-hearted, she commits high treason to protect WWX and JC, and then helps WWX with the core transfer, on someone she knows is going to come to slaughter her sect. Her last words, thank you and I'm sorry, had me sobbing.
Top Favourite Scenes
1. Rabbits Scene
Everything about this was so adorable. WWX gifting LWJ rabbits, cleverly making him accept said rabbits, LWJ breaking the rules for WWX and keeping the rabbits such that there is an entire warren of them by the time 13 years come to pass. Adorable kids with their adorable crushes. 馃挄
2. Dinner in the Burial Mounds after Wen Ning's Revival
The Burial Mounds arc is without a doubt something I adore very much, for the tiny place WWX carved out for the Wens, far from the world that would see them dead. I love this scene especially because WWX says he will walk the dark single path alone, but the Wens light lanterns for him, welcome him into their family, and he no longer feels that it is dark at all.
3. Trip to Yiling
WWX imagining LWJ and himself as happy as his parents were, imagining a future with LWJ, falling in love, and LWJ is so indulgent, so utterly in love, and gods... I cannot put into words how much I love this scene.
4. Confession Scene
LOVELY. STUNNING. A MASTERPIECE. The narrative? The hostage situation? Life threat? Irrelevant. WWX will confess to his HGJ dammnit and no one is going to stop him. This is a moment when both WWX and LWJ knows, for sure, that the feelings they held for the other is not simply tolerated, it is returned. The gentle love they hold for each other burns as bright in the other too, and gods... it is beautiful.
5. Dream Come True Extra
The fluff!!! They're married and in Love, your Honour!!! LWJ and WWX are so soft with each other, so utterly blissful, and they deserve it. The dates, the boat ride, a dream in cloud recesses come true, something both their young selves yearned for and yet could not have, but now they are happy and free and in love, in a way they never imagined to be as teens.

Okay hear me out here, I had yet another awesome concept!
So fans of the brothers are called (brother name) stans.
But I had a more specific idea with Lucifer. Based on his animal.
So... like... we're peahens. And if it so happens that someone's into this certain kink that gets thrown around a lot on this blog, then you're a peachick.
Cause I like the idea of being a peachick.
That's my morning insanity. Thank you for listening.

When I first got Stan, I wasn't sure he'd make it more than a few days, but he did. When I first took him to the vet as a baby, they told me not to expect him to make it to maturity, but he did. The last time I took him to the vet, a different vet from his usual vet saw him and had to sort through the list of known health issues to get to what was wrong this time, and was impressed he was even alive, and that was over a year ago. He's beaten a lot of odds, he's gone farther than even the most hopeful of speculation.
Unfortunately, a line in the sand comes for any animal Time doesn't take. For us, that line was him losing his ability to walk, or his ability to see, and both have been slowly worsening over the last year. Today, it has finally come down to the latter, as his vision has gone completely in his remaining good eye. For peafowl, that's a hard-line quality of life factor- it affects their ability to get food and water (which would mean stressful and uncomfortable tube feeding sessions 3x a day), as well as their ability to move into or out of shelter, and their ability to socialize. As they are HIGHLY social creatures, feeling like he's constantly alone would be absolutely miserable for him. I can't put him through that and still call myself a responsible owner, so he'll be going in for his final vet appointment tomorrow afternoon.

I know a lot of you have loved Stan over the past 7 years, and I know you're going to miss him nearly as much as I will. He's been a Very Good Boy, and this place is just not going to be the same without him.

The person I love left my life this year.
For a while back then I wasn't really sure I wanted to survive, but having a history of depression helped me realise what was happening, so I finally decided to go to therapy for the first time ever. I'm proud of myself for 1) realising the danger in time 2) sticking through therapy despite how hard it is for me 3) getting to the point where I am not in active danger anymore!
This year was not kind to me in several other aspects, and yet: 1) I discovered loose-leaf tea!! It helps with a lot of things 2) as a side-effect of therapy, I am opening up more to people, and this means that I actually now have more friendly acquaintances than ever! May I have a photo of Stan and his beautiful train? I also love Bug and Indy, but Stan is my favourite!! <3 <3 <3 Thank you so much!
Congratsssss I'm happy that you are here and getting help!!
I'm very sorry I cannot give you Stan's beautiful train, as it's winter and SOGGY right now, but please have a photo of this idiot after he attempted to take a dust bath in the MUD outside instead of the dry sand inside the coops:

I had to rescue and clean him up, absolutely filthy wet beast hours over here.

SOMEone thought the big birds were REALLY scary and kept running to me to hide. Meanwhile Artemis just wanted pettings and Stan wanted to protect Bug from me. Stella actually did want to kick her butt, as did Eris, but Eris listened when I told her she had to be nice.

Well, that storm could have gone better.
Tumblr media
The netting pulled off the barn roof (which is mostly fine, it was loosely attached because we hadn't gone back to secure it properly yet), so that will have to be re-attached once it warms up and calms down. For now, Polaris and his ladies will be in the barn only. The HEAVY and WET snow we got also pulled Pen 3's netting down strongly enough that the support posts punctured it, so Pen 3 is also confined to quarters until we can get that stapled back up. I put in an order for new netting, but it doesn't get here until the end of the month, and likely won't be able to go up until spring.
At least the birds are safe and well. They have a lot of fresh straw in their coops to bed down in, and Stan and Artemis have got a heated perch they're smart enough to use.
Tumblr media
We have more weather and colder temps coming, so wish us luck.

Since some people are wondering about size of peafowl, I dug up some comparison photos of birds.
Tumblr media
Joslin (left, turkey) weighs 9lbs. Eclipse (middle, peahen) weighs 8.5lbs. Orion (right, peacock) weighed 9.5lbs at 4 years old (maturity is at 3 years, full grown is 5-6 years).
Tumblr media
Helios, Orion's son (yearling peacock on the right, peacock), weighed about 10.5lbs as a yearling. Orion (peacock on the left, middle bird), weighed 9.5lbs. Ursa Major (hen) weighed 8.5lbs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stan (peacock on left) is tiny for a peacock, weighs a smidge over 8lbs. Helios (peacock on left) weighs 10.5lbs.
This is one of Helio's toes next to my hand, and a toenail next to my index fingernail. Also, my hand beside a footprint from Polaris, a yearling cock:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is a primary from Stan, the small 8lb cock:
Tumblr media
Here is the center tail feather of Octavian, a 10lb opal cock:
Tumblr media
And a visual of where this feather goes on a live bird, here's an arrow where you see the top of the tail fan behind the train, and a line indicating the length of the feather to where it attaches on the body (moved to the side so you can still see the feather):
Tumblr media
And the difference between an 8lb hen center tail feather and a 10lb cock center tail feather:
Tumblr media
This is Stan (again, an 8lb SMALL cock) on an xray table next to two adult humans:
Tumblr media
And the same 8lb bird sitting on my hand (I am 5'3" for reference):
Tumblr media
Vs. a 9lb hen standing on the knee of a 6' tall man:
Tumblr media
3-month old babies on my hand, weighing about 3lbs
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And some random Item size comparisons? A 9lb hen inside of a 50g aquarium, on a normal pillow for a bed, on a regular 3-cushion couch, and in a bathtub next to some shampoo bottles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway. Peafowl are Big Fucking Birds and I think sometimes that gets lost when you either see them too much or too little. This amount of bird (really any amount of bird but especially fuck-you-up quantities of bird) deserves respect for their size, both in living space and in handling.

Stan, please... You are giving Callisto a run for her money here.
[video description: a tan-colored peacock stands waiting behind a flight pen door. Off-camera voice says "waiting patiently at the door to be let out." Camera pans and then backs up to reveal the door is already propped wide open, all the bird has to do is go around it. Video ends after a heavy sigh from off-camera]

We had a wind storm this weekend and these two took offense to the wind making Sounds and injured themselves. Artemis (bottom) bruised one side of her face up, but she's acting fine otherwise so she'll probably be back to normal in a few days.
Stan, on the other hand, bruised his left eye socket and was acting Off with a capital O. He's normally not very active, his legs don't work all that great and he can't catch a deep breath because of his messed up ribs and stuff, but he was lethargic and not eating/drinking normally, so I swapped him into Joslin's appt slot today and took him in.
It wasn't my normal vet again, and I told her that Stan is a hot mess, and she felt him up and told me well his abdominal cavity sounds weird, I said yeah he's got messed up air sacs. She goes well, one of his legs is atrophied more than his other, and I said was it his right one because that's the one that was worse as a baby and doesn't work right, and she goes yeah it was the right one. She goes, it feels like his kidneys are too big, this could be a case of gout, we can xray to look for it. Now, I know it's not gout, but an xray will either enlighten her on the fact that I'm not joking about how messed up this bird is, or it will show her what's actually injured, or both.
So she does the xray and she calls me into the back room and she goes well. it's not gout. his kidneys are actually small and I was feeling his messed up air sac. there's a lot wrong here, but I'm looking at his last xray and there's a lot wrong there, and most of it is the same. he got a little better in some ways and a little worse in other ways, but the issue is that it looks like he jammed his hip joint and injured it a little, possibly from landing wrong.
you know. an injury. like from the ultimate panic of the Wind Making Sounds.
Anyway he got some antibiotics against infection and some pain meds and we'll give him a couple of tube feedings until he's not feeling crappy. For now he's asleep in my room on a roost.

Went out to check on the birds and spotted Stan and Artemis cuddled up. As I got closer I saw Aurora loafed beside them. As I got to the pen I noticed Eris loafed too. Hanging out by the pond all together.
