Episode 3 of “Spy x Family” was much better than the first two episodes. The pacing was a lot smoother and the stuff they added in the episode actually elevated the original chapter. It definitely feels more inspired than the direction of the first two episodes, which is a possible good sign for the rest of the season.
Also, I think I’m starting to get what the direction is for the anime. It seems like CloverWorks and Wit Studio are focusing on the wholesome family aspect of the series, as well as the romance. The tone is a lot more serious while the romantic scenes are given more attention (there wasn’t this much blushing in the manga). Two things:
1) It’s a decent direction for the series. I mean, “Spy x Family” is about romance and family. However...
2) ...“Spy x Family” is also a zany comedy. And as we’ve seen in the previous two episodes, the comedy is being lost because of the current direction.
Still, episode 3 was a definite improvement over the first two. I’m worried that the comedic elements will still be hit-or-miss in later episodes, but for now, it feels like the series is getting its footing after a rocky start.
EDIT: Forgot to mention. Because of how serious the tone is, even though the pacing is smoother, it’s a lot slower than the manga. The episode felt like a stroll in the park while the manga felt like a quick breeze. And this goes back to my point about the comedy being lost in the anime. Because the manga’s pace was faster, it made things more funny. Because the anime’s pace is slower, it’s less funny and more serious.

never really got to see all of anya's room before. i know they said the place was fully furnished when loid bought it, but i think it'd be very cute and funny if he had to agonize over what to buy for anya's room.

SPY X FAMILY SEASON 2 (EP. 1)
Yeah... I need to gush about this episode.
We kick off the season with the infamous Bullet-in-Butt Date where... well, I think the name itself is telling lol. This was originally a cute extra chapter (one that came before Twiyor's date at the bar post-Campbelldon Tennis arc), but I love the idea of using it as an introduction to Season 2. Story-wise, I'm pretty sure it's much the same as the manga chapter it's based on, but I'm mostly just very much in love with how everything looked and moved. You can tell that a lot of thought went into planning how this should be animated to really make the manga come to life.
Let's take that opening scene as an example: in the manga, the chapter opens with the bodies in the background as Yor talks on the phone with a representative of Garden. Distracted by the call, she doesn't notice that one of her victims was still alive, and he takes the opportunity to aim his gun and shoot. It cuts away to a shot of the building where they're at before moving onto the panels at the Forger family home.

The anime doesn't really deviate from this sequence of events, but they added things to the scene to bring more color to it. There's suspense in the way they started the scene in darkness punctuated only by flashes of gunshots and the sounds of a fight, and creepiness in the unsteady and sweeping motions of the camera as if they're dragging our gaze across the carnage before we could tack it onto Yor's back. Instead of cutting from a shot of her face to one of her shooter's, the shooter comes into focus from where we see him in the background. We even see him shoot Yor from his perspective, the unsteady camera cuing how the shooter is pretty injured, planting uncertainty into whether or not he'll make the shot. Every second is packed with detail, and this whole scene is barely 60 seconds long. Just... wow.

There are plenty of other examples in the episode, but it'll be better to just watch and see for yourself! Honestly, it feels like the episode was shot the way a movie would be, which gives it a more dynamic and interesting feel. I especially like the long shots and the uninterrupted vibe for some scenes. My favorite is definitely that long shot between Loid and Anya when they were processing Yor's behavior. Snappy shots would've still been funny, but I think the long lingering shots helped set the tone, especially with Loid's growing sense of dread.

Hello can I interest anyone in Heymann/Vides (the two dudes who are Yor’s coworkers in the cruise ship but they’re civilians) I love them so much and they only appear in this one arc (so far!)
omggg tbh! to be very honest!!! i thought about it briefly, and thought about searching for them but was like. nahhhhh idk if i'll find anything. (foolish! silly! i underestimate the power of fandom!! im honestly gonna go down the list of characters in sxf on the wiki or something and sift through as much as i can hehehe, but that's another conversation)
ANYWAYS i love this idea, my brain is already goin in all sorts of directions. 👀 they have a whole day to themselves on that cruise after all! they go gambling together! heymann hits the jackpot! vides loses terribly!! heymann can take him out for drinks to comfort him, or something adfkj they're a little drunk and spend the night together and well. what happens on the cruise ship stays on the cruise ship 🤫 (or so they say, they cant stop thinking about their time together when theyre at work, eyes accidentally meeting and blushing..) OR one follows the other to their room and he's like ugh this is MY room/bed but he's too drunk and passes out and he's like ugh whatever *just shares a bed anyways*
i totally went off on a tangent whoops but yeah they have lots of potential!!
