I just want to ramble about birds because I worry I might annoy those I love. My favorite birds are 1. The harpy eagle, have you seen it? What a big glorious bird. The largest eagle I believe, wing span of up to 7 ft and talons as big as a grizzle bears claws!! 2. The Dracula parrot. So cool. What a goth little parrot. But not so little, they have a total length of approximately 18 inches! They are at risk due to deforestation and hunting for its feathers. 3. Cassowary! It’s a fricken dinosaur, makes an insane sound. Large flightless bird, same family as the Emu! Speaking of emu’s, in 1914 Australia launched a war to kill emus that were destroying crops. They lost because emus are resilient and elusive, they jump high into the air. Thank you for reading about my special interest 😊
Hello dear!
I absolutely love birds and love learning about them! Harpy eagles are unbelievable! They feel like a magical creature to me. From what I know they don’t vocalize very much at all, but it would be such a treat to hear one. I’ll happily keep my distance with claws that big though!
I had never heard of the Dracula Parrot before and had to go look it up! They are amazing, I love the deep red of their feathers. It reminds me of red wing black birds, but far more mysterious and vampiric. I find it very cute that despite the name, they eat figs and nectar. What lovely fellows.
I am genuinely terrified of being trapped anywhere with a cassowary. That is a velociraptor!! It will eat me! And their vocalization is also wild. I didn’t realize they’re related to Emu’s. I’m not surprised the Emu’s won the war, they are powerful birds! It just goes to show that nature will always persevere.
Thank YOU for sharing your special interest with me! I love hearing about things that make people happy. I hope you meet many amazing birds soon!
Best,
Evan

no but it's been like a week and I'm still obsessed with how the National Museum of Denmark did their The Raid viking exhibition. whenever I have idle time my brain starts chewing on it like my dog when she dismantles a new toy. see, part of their viking exhibition is a film called The Raid, and all the marketing for it hypes up this idea of joining the Vikings on an adventurous raid led by the legendary Björn Ironside! You face danger! Find out if you and björn survive the deadly greek fire!
but the actual raid you "join" is nothing like that. you move through a series of curved canvas screens, led from scene to scene by softly glowing light. it starts with the death of björn's father, interspersed with scenes of a young björn playing with a toy ship, and him mourning his father at a sacrificial bog. his decision to seek Rome isn't framed as some grand, bold venture, but as the choice of a young man struggling to live up to the violent and glorified legacy of his father. you watch as 62 ships set sail in search of Rome, plundering and pillaging new lands as they find them. the violence is suggested – but scenes of trade and communication are also shown. the narrator makes it clear that these ships are heavy with slaves. when the voyage stretches on, you see björn openly mourning his comrades who have died from dehydration and sickness. when the fleet encounters resistance, the audience is invited to join the raid not as a fierce viking warrior exalting in conquest, but as an exhausted seafarer slowly drowning. you do not go to Valhalla, but to dwell in the drowned depths with Rán until Ragnarok.
and the wonder of it is that it's very, very cleverly done. see, there's this subset of people who say they're interested in Viking history, but what they're actually interested in is the stereotype of this aggressively masculine Aryan warrior. unfortunately, people like this have co-opted the popular image of vikings for a long time, and although the study of viking history is shifting away from the biases that have perpetuated this myth, the image persists. this makes it very difficult to have a nuanced conversation about who the Vikings actually were. by showing a collosal failure, devoid of any gilding of glory, The Raid very pointedly smashes all misinformed expectations the audience might have had. It's just. so haunting.
