Found some excellent horror-related and horror-adjacent books to read this month! Not a common genre for me, so this was fun. Really can't recommend Grady Hendrix as an author enough, Horrorstör was definitely my favourite novel from this month

Eric

I hate saying it because I love the Discworld and Terry Pratchett is easily my favourite author, but man Eric did not do it for me. You could see some good bones in it, but as far as I’m concerned all the interesting bits that appeared were done significantly better in later books. It had some humour moments, but the only bits that I really enjoyed were when the Luggage was around.

This story followed a young, teenaged, would-be demon summoner who, instead of summoning a demon, accidentally winds up with the incompetent and fearful wizzard Rincewind. Obligated to answer this kid’s wishes, they end up bouncing through time and space while attempting to survive what each wish had to throw at them.

Fantastic Mr Fox / Esio Trot / George’s Marvellous Medicine / The Enormous Crocodile

I went on a Dahl kick this month, I wanted to work through some of his shorter works that I’ve never bothered to read before. All of them were honestly delightful, I had a blast. Esio Trot was probably the weakest of the lot, but the other three were so much fun. The Fantastic Mr Fox may be my favourite just by virtue of being the most fleshed out, but listening to The Enormous Crocodile be read by Stephen Fry is an unparalleled experience.

Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy

A story I enjoyed more than I expected. I have a strange soft spot for hockey narratives, but that might just be the Canadian in me. Alix’s one true love is hockey, it’s the one place she feels competent and happy, but her team captain is making the space increasingly hostile until, unable to take the bullying, she strikes out and punches her captain. Shocked by her own violence and given an ultimatum by the coach to get her temper under control, she ends up going to popular and poised Ezra, hoping that he could show her how to deal with harassment without losing her cool in a way that scares her.

Horrorstör

Easily the best book I read this month, this book was amazing, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a “haunted house but in a knock-off Ikea” and I mostly picked it up as a joke because the premise sounded hilarious. But I was familiar with the author (I’d read The Southern Book Club’s Guide To Slaying Vampires a couple years ago) and trusted him to do something interesting with the premise. And wow. Just wow. It is very much a classic, grisly, nauseating horror premise, but in a way that explores capitalism, exploitation, and treatment of prisoners and the mentally ill. It’s been a long time since I read a book that actually gave me chills, but I had to put this book down and walk away from it occasionally, it was intense enough.

The Kaiju Preservation Society

As a Pacific Rim lover, this book was everything I’d ever wish for it to be. It’s such a love letter to the kaiju genre as well as environmental conservation, and it’s speculative biology is fascinating!

After being fire from his job at the beginning of the Covid pandemic lockdown in New York City, Jamie Gray is barely making ends meet by acting as a delivery driver. He doesn’t know how he can possibly continue on like this, until he runs into an old friend who offers him a strange and intensely secretive job offer. With nothing to lose, Jamie agrees and finds himself on an alternate Earth, helping to study creatures that he only knows from campy monster movies, now very much real.

The Last Wish

Felt an urge to reread a Witcher book, so I’ve been picking my way through the short stories. They continue to be a lot of fun, and it felt good to reconnect with the original narrative voice again after reading a lot of fanfiction over the years. For anyone who has someone existed post-Netflix version without picking up the general premise: Geralt of Rivia is a "witcher", a person who was specifically trained to wield weapons and magics to hunt dangerous monsters that threaten humans. This is a collection of short stories that show Geralt on some of the various hunts he's had during the decades of his over-long life. (It's significantly better than the Netflix version, very much worth the read if you like classic high fantasy and/or fairy tale retellings.)

Mortimer: Rat Race to Space

A very dull youth novel. Mortimer is a lab rat at Houston who has aspirations to go on the space program and prove that rats are better suited for colonizing Mars than humans. If you’re a seven year old who wants to consume space facts, this is the book for you. For everyone else, it’s a bit of a slog.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism

Another Grady Hendrix book. This book was undeniably well-written, just as masterful as his others, but I didn’t enjoy it as much. A bit too much high school narrative and not enough all out horror. The conclusion was pretty decent, but the rest was… fine. A fun love letter to the 1980s though as you learn about two best friends and how they grow up together. ...A bit of a debate whether or not it warrants a queer marker or not, I'm not even going to make that attempt.

The One and Only Ruby

The newest book from the One and Only Ivan series. Much like The One and Only Bob this book was… fine. The original of the series was really wonderful and felt quite inspired, inspired by the real life story of a gorilla that’s kept in a small cage in a mall complex. The next two books take place after that one and each follows one of Ivan’s friends (Bob the dog and Ruby the baby elephant). A fun enough addition to the series, the art is still cute, and it has decent things to say about the hunting of endangered animals, but it was nothing amazing.

Paperbacks from Hell

Look, I really just felt the desperate need to read a bunch of Hendrix novels after being so violently consumed by Horrorstör. This is a nonfiction book in which Hendrix dives into the evolution and popular tropes of horror novels throughout the 1980s, with the cover art being the driving thesis throughout. You can tell how much he loves these weird, pulpy horrors and it makes you want to go and find a bunch of these and read them yourself. It really is an interesting book, even if you aren’t a great horror lover (which I wouldn’t consider myself).

The Salt Grows Heavy

Now this is a fucking novella. An absolutely unhinged, body-horror rich retelling of both The Little Mermaid and Frankenstein. Yeah. After the complete destruction of her husband’s kingdom at the hands (and jaws) of her own children, the Mermaid finds herself travelling with a mysterious Plague Doctor. I won’t go further into this except to say that the way it portrays morality, life, death, and the mutability of flesh is just… something else. Would recommend. But not if you have a weak stomach.

Scott Pilgrim

A classic. I watched the new animated series with my brother and felt the need to go back and reread the entire original series. Absolutely perfect, no notes, continues to be one of my all time favourite graphic novel series. The magical realism is just *chef’s kiss*.

I graduated a few years ago with a degree in writing & rhetoric, but I've never been brave enough to share anything online. I am a lover of fantasy, sci-fi, mythology, and crime stories. I am also obsessed with manga/anime, especially HunterxHunter, Naruto, and Jujutsu Kaisen. My favorite book of all time is Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Game of Thrones and Dune are both in my top five favorite books of all time. I am not a huge fan of romance stories, but I love stories with well-written romance subplots. Action scenes are fun, but I am here for the great dialogue and character interactions. Internal conflict is seriously underrated.

I am a huge history and mythology buff, so much of my writing is inspired by these two things. I love writing dark fantasy stories and exploring themes of class, power structures, dysfunctional families, friendship, forbidden love, angst, etc. But, really, I just get such great joy from creating my worlds and creating characters that feel alive. My characters become like my imaginary friends.

I want to use this blog to showcase my writing and connect with other writers in the community!

I have two current WIPs listed below.

Traitors of the Nation

Genre: Urban Fantasy

In the nation of Astoria, the cold carves bone deep and its citizens are divided by blood—those with the golden blood type are called the magia, people with super abilities that manifest themselves when the user is thrust into dangerous situations. The noble elite wants to control this power with a class system that ranks its citizens based on the nobility of bloodlines and the usefulness of one’s abilities. Commoners with the golden blood type are forced into labor assignments, and the elite have created a device to suppress the abilities of an individual should they prove to be defiant.

Izan Ashida and Satoshi Nishimura are childhood friends who find themselves on opposite sides. Izan sits among the highest elites, serving as a bounty hunter who does the Crown's bidding, while Satoshi is placed in a lower class and branded a danger to society. War is brewing between the classes, and it has the royal family on edge. Revolution is coming. But when an elite military officer orders Satoshi be executed for treason Izan must confront a past he was desperate to leave behind and decide where his loyalties truly lie.

The Immortals' Gambit

Genre: High Fantasy/Mythos

Casimir Kozlov has lived his life in hiding, afraid of being discovered as a cross-blood in a world where humans struggle as mere mortals and the vampiric hemomancers known as the Zegoshi reign as gods. But the nine immortals are not the only thing to fear.

The Watchers, a highly trained military faction of the Zegoshi, are everywhere. They are tasked with maintaining social order and executing any cross-bloods they encounter. Beyond the wall, there are dragons, violent beasts who are enemies to Zegoshi and humans alike. At least, that’s what he had always been told.

Tired of living within the confinements of the wall and wanting to escape his Zegoshi father, he runs away from home on his eighteenth birthday. But his venture outside the wall proves to be lethal when he has an encounter with a dragon, discovering that the beasts have been disguising themselves among humans.

A rogue Zegoshi intervenes, sweeping Casimir into a world of intrigue and danger. Forced into an alliance with an enigmatic young Watcher captain, the trio embarks on a mission to investigate the surging dragon threat in society. But as he begins to delve deeper into this world, he uncovers hidden truths about humanity’s history with the dragons, the true intentions of the gods, and a prophecy that reveals the role he must play in this deadly game of power and politics.

Sorry this might be incredibly long lmao

Ok ok Sebastian is an 1000+ year old vampire who was sealed away in a magical coffin after being lied to by his best friend, Codrin. Basically Sebastian is obsessed with magic and wants to know as much as he possibly can. So sometimes Codrin would find spells and give them over to Sebastian but the last time he lied abt what the spell could do. The spell ended up killing a lot of people and the magic council (I don't have a name for them yet) decided it would be better to seal Sebastian away rather than to kill him. The coffin came with a handler too, that handler ended up being Codrin. And since Sebastian has a vast knowledge of magic, the council decided that they could let him out to kill monsters no one else could. But afterwards he couldn't just walked away, Codrin would make unbreakable deals that wouldn't allow Sebastian to leave. However, after centuries Codrin thought that they wouldn't have to make the deal anymore bc its been so long, he was very wrong. The moment Sebastian was able, he turned on Codrin and put him in the coffin then he buried him.

So then afterwards, Sebastian has to get used to this completely different society. But while he's trying to figure it out he got thrown in jail lmao and his guard is a guy named Apollo. Anyway Sebastian was able to escape fairly easy, which got Apollo fired (he was on his last strike). But when Apollo went for a walk he ran into Sebastian and was like "hey you got me fired so you owe me a job asshole" and Sebastian was like "fuck no I do not." So Apollo ends up joining him instead.

Anyway, the next village they went to was dying, there was some sort of sickness going around. But they don't have a lot of doctors or anyone who knows medicine. The only person who knew a little bit abt medicine was an apothecary in training, Lydia. She always had an interest in medicine and she wants to be able to help her younger brother. But she comes from a very small village, that's incredibly hard to find so doctors and apothecaries aren't common sp she had to leave to learn more. Anyway, Sebastian has knowledge on plants too bc most of them have some sort of magical property. So he was able to help the village and train Lydia a bit. But she also decides to tag along too.

And finally, on their way to the next village, a werewolf, Maria, attacks them. Sebastian was easily able to stop her and all he really wanted was to ask her questions. He's heard lots of rumors throughout his time, so he wanted to clear them up. Then after he got all the information he wanted, he just let her go. This really shocked Maria bc she is so used to violence and being on her own. But Lydia convinces her to join them (much to Sebastians dismay but overtime he starts to enjoy having them around).

Some extra lore:

As much as Sebastian hates Codrin, he's also scared of what he can do.

Sebastian gets a hug for the first time from his new friends and he just breaks down, like full on sobbing

Codrin gets dug up later by a group of farmers and makes it his mission to find Sebastian

Apollo wanted to own a library but his father wouldn't let him and instead forced him to be a guard

Maria got taken from her family at a young age and has been on her own for a long time, Sebastian and his group are the first people to show her kindness in a really long time

Sebastian acts cold and aloof but he's actually a sweetheart but it takes him a very very long time to trust people now (for obvious reason)

Lydia makes fantastic tea and she's hoping she can introduce her friends to her family. She didn't have a lot growing up

🌸 (i know astarion has a canonical scent but i'm curious what alternatives you think he should have!)

For all these asks, I'm going to append these resources below for anyone reading so they aren't just lost by all the perfumery terms I'm throwing around. Plus, highly recommend them if you wanna start figuring out more about fragrances and what you may enjoy in one! The science is really something else and is one of the oldest out there, arguably, in terms of cosmetic use in history! \o/

The Perfume Society's Introduction to Fragrance Families

This HUGE chart describing Fragrance families and subfamilies with examples and all kinds of good little notes (it's from the /fa/ board on 4chan; yes, I know. Sometimes, good stuff comes out of that nuclear dumpster fire).

Wikipedia's quick run-down of Olfactorive Families/Terms used in perfumes isn't half bad if you just want a very quick run-down.

Fragntica's Giant Compendium of notes used in all kinds of perfumes to look up and see examples of along with a small description of the note!

OOC. I've always had a weird hate-love relationship with the devs' choice of scent notes for Astarion. On the one hand, bergamot, rosemary, and aged brandy all point to a classic gentleman's airy, light cologne with a nice undercut of something more deepier and muskier... I just felt like they could've gone harder with it, you know? While all that fits for the profile of a charming, noble courtier, it almost feels too light for the character Astarion is. Too lacking for what lurks underneath. With all the imagery you can connect to Astarion on top of his archetypal, elven handsome rake image combined with the gloom, darkness, and intrigue and Gothicism vampirism innately presents? I think they should've gone with a much more 19th Century to 17th Century fougère style of cologne. Personally, if I was deciding on the notes and the accords... Gosh, there's so many smells you can assign to a character but the main component is keeping to a general type of accords/family/overall scent profile. For Astarion, I'd continue with that herbaceous type of profile but undercut it with something that almost makes you feel profane yet wanting to see what truly lurks beneath, be it pleasures or tragedies. Throw more into the notes of bergamont, rosemary, and aged brandy, those can be the top notes of the refined image he puts forward but it should be laden with something much more musky, dark, almost heady but dangerous. Below is my little list of scents I'd pin on him and such, be they examples or me going through notes as I ramble about more.

Wicked but beautiful. BPAL's Dorian Grey is almost my poster child for what type of smells I'd give Astarion as a basis: "Inspired by and created for my beloved Tedwin: my eternal, beautiful, wicked Dorian Gray. Refined, elegant, and lovely, with a noble bearing and seemingly gentle air. This blend is an artful deception: a sweet gilded blossom lying over a twisted and corrupted core. A Victorian fougere with three pale musks and dark, sugared vanilla tea."

Playing up that image of the forbidden vampire who lurks in the night? Darken the refined notes even further. Ambers, sandalwood, or red musks. Laden with the sweet, poisoned throb of a gourmand note like red cherries, vanilla, maybe even honey, before opening up to an intense, hot wave of dragon's resin and blood red wine. You could do all sorts of combinations but I'd keep close to heady, hot notes than simply deep ones like pure vetiver, leather, or black opium.

Clove can be surprisingly intense on the nose and can be combined to evoke a lot of emotions and images I can see on him. I also see him as someone leaning towards more herbal scents overall given his first two choices; Morrocan roses and narcissus flowers for that almost sweet touch, maybe with a crisp white linen touch to lighten the notes on him.

When I think of his scent profile, I think of reds against bone white, with touches of colour in-between like spattering of flowers. He very much strikes out to me as very warm yet very crisp.

Jin Verses

MAIN VERSES

THE UNFORGIVEN (MAIN VERSE)

Based off events similar (though not identical) to those of the Bount Arc, Jin leads his fellow Bount and a collection of others against the Shinigami and other powers that be within the Soul Society, with the aim of wiping them out, and potentially more over the course of many years-- a tale of revenge, justice, and bloodshed.

While threads in this verse can technically take place at any point from Tale of the Lost Agent onward, it is mainly Post-Blood War and Post-CFYOW, as in around the 10-year timeskip / No Breaths From Hell (i.e this verse envisions Jin, the Bount, and others associated with him as being antagonists farther down in the timeline, rather than in the beginning as was the case with the actual Bount Arc).

DEAD SOULS (PAST VERSE)

Deals with events that occurred in the years preceding Jin’s Main Verse, threads here can take place during the events surrounding Aizen / Ryoka Invasion but can also include setting’s hundreds of years in the past, when Jin was still growing his power, and collecting his core followers.

AU’S AND OTHER VERSES

ON GREATER WINDS (CROSSOVER VERSE)

Same as ’THE UNFORGIVEN’ but with the added inclusion of Crossover shenanigans.

VERMILION (FANDOMLESS AU)

Jin belongs to the ‘Bount’, a nearly extinct clan of Vampires (who feed on Souls instead of blood), and is at present it’s eldest, and most powerful figure. Jin has walked the earth for thousands of years trying to (at first) unite his clan and Vampires as a whole against their common, oppressive foes (Holy Orders and the like but mainly a specific group of Supernatural Hunters), and then later, planning vengeance against those foes with the remainder of his Clan at his side, while also running and dealing with seedy underworld business on the side (that may well tie into his vengeance goals).

LAST THREAD. DANCING DEAD (JJK AU)

In ages long past, a mysterious group known within Jujutsu circles as the 'Bount' inhabited the Western World. Their true nature was never fully discerned, as it was said they possessed qualities that likened them to Curses as well as Humans, but due to their mannerisms and the way they operated, these 'Bount' would inspire the myth of the 'Vampire' within regular human society, further sinking them into infamy, whether they truly deserved it or not.

For centuries, those who counted themselves among these 'Bount' found themselves at odds with regular society and groups of sorcerers who saw them as nothing but monsters, and sometime during the middle ages, this struggle came to a head. With help from the burgeoning Jujutsu Headquarters in the east, a coalition of western sorcerers led an 'Inquisition' against the Bount, which led to their systematic eradication over the course of five years.. or so it was thought.

While scores of Bount were indeed slaughtered during the 'Grand Western Inquisition' (as it was later named by those in Jujutsu circles), reports of 'Vampire' activity continued to pop up every now and then within regular society the world over. While many of these 'Vampire' sightings and incidents were likely nothing more than hysteria, there was truth to some of them....

A small group of Bount had indeed survived the almost-wholesale eradication set upon the rest of their ilk, and these individuals were led by an ancient soul, a man named Eugene Kurier, or as he later came to be known after moving east, Jin Kariya.

Seeking to take revenge against the Jujutsu world and the organizations within it that saw to the Bount's genocide, Jin has been biding his time and building strength, both his own and that of his followers. How Jin aims to fully implement this vengeance is still unclear, but the recent events unfolding within Japan might provide him with the perfect opportunity to do so...

STORMS ON THE HORIZON (GENERAL AU VERSE)

[this is basically a placeholder AU, for fandoms I don’t have a specific AU verse setup in yet– Jin’s status as a vampire-like entity or perhaps even a legitimate kind of vampire depending on the Fandom who’s lived for the last 1000+ years remains, but *INSERTED INTO WHATEVER WORLD*]

FOR THE KILL (FATE AU)

Of the Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors, Jin is perhaps the first to dip his toes in the arcane ritual known as the Holy Grail War, seeking to take the Grail and its power for himself, with the aims of using it to fulfill his desire of revenge against the Holy Church and a handful of individuals within the Mage’s Association.

Jin, being a Dead Apostle Ancestor, one of the few beings on earth who could stand up to Servants, likely wouldn’t need a Servant at all to win this war, but he summons one anyway, for the necessity of the ritual itself, and sets out on his quest...

Threads in this AU can take place across the typical Fate timelines, such as Stay/Night, Apocrypha, Strange/Fake, and maybe FGO (during certain Singularities),etc.

THE RED (DEMON SLAYER AU)

Where ‘Demons’ have plagued Japan for centuries, other creatures, other monsters, have stalked the streets and nights of lands far away-- in Europe and its closely neighboring regions, one of those creatures, the ‘Bount’ (one of many subspecies that make up the greater phenomena of ‘Vampires’), has lived alongside (and at times preyed upon) the Human populace for thousands of years, though the Bount’s numbers have considerably dwindled in recent times, thanks to an extermination campaign waged against them.

One man, however, one Bount, by the name of Eugen Kurier, vowed to take vengeance for his people’s near eradication, and set out into the world with a group of loyal followers in a quest for power, power that they could one day use to destroy those who had hunted them, and avenge their fallen brethren.

Recently, that quest has taken this Bount all the way to the shores of Japan, and after adopting the pseudonym ‘Jin Kariya’, and laying a bit of groundwork, ‘Jin’ believes its time to go out and seek the next puzzle piece to the power he and his followers so crave-- the souls of Japan’s so-called ‘Demons’.
