Pirot Kilim ornaments
Tumblr media
Чурлињак (čurlinjak) - The most basic motif, representing a cross section of the lower part of the whisk for mixing ingredients (called čurlinjak).
Врашко колено (Devil's knee) - The motif comes from the pre-Christian Slavic religion. It symbolises movement in circles (kolo dance) and the flow of life, and provides strength, bravery and defense against evil.
Корњача/жељка (turtle) - The most popular pattern of the Pirot Kilim. It symbolises durability and longevity and brings fertility, healthy life and protection from danger.
Ченђели (čenđeli) - Represents a grappling hook mounted on a wooden pole, used for hanging things.
Бомбе (bombs) - It beard this name due to its semblance to handgranades, but the motif has existed since before handgrandes were invented. It provides strength and energy, especially to men, so the kilims with this motif were usually gifted to boys for their life milestones.
Tumblr media
Гуштер (lizard) - This pattern probably originates from modified depictions of dragons. It represents laziness and indifference, but also change, flexibility and adaptation to the world.
Ђулови (roses) - It represents a stylised cross section of a rose, showing both the exterior as well as the pistils, anthers and seeds inside. It is symbolises a young woman and her beauty. Kilims with this motif are often gifted to daughters by their mothers. Different variations of this motif exist, some of which (the roses on shackles) were, according to legends, made as rebellion of kilim weavers against the Ottoman repression.
Ђаволчићи (Little Devils) - The devil is represented as a human figure turned upside down, with the devil's head turned towards the underworld, and a bird on the other side representing the heaven.
Tumblr media
Гугутка (dove) - Birds protect from evil spirits and diseases and connect the earth and sky. It represents family harmony, love, peace and joy, and as such kilims with this motif are often gifted to new homeowners. This motif can often be seen arranged around a pole, representing a tree full of birds.
Атапот (atapot) - It represents an octopus, and the name probably came from a distorted pronunciation of the word oktopod (octopus).
Француске бомбоне (French candies) - This motif was probably inspired by silk candy wrapped in decorative paper and brought to Serbia from distant lands. According to a folk story, when the French soldiers liberated Pirot in the First World War in 1918, the kilim weavers designed this pattern as a sign of gratitude.
Столица (chair) - It represents an antique chair and the inspiration for this pattern came from the everyday life of the kilim weavers.
Тиче (tiče) - It represents a small bird.

Re-watched Mountie and Soul for fic research purposes, and I just really love the buildup to the motb conflict. It's so fascinating to watch because Ray feels So Much and expresses that, while Fraser keeps his emotions at bay - he's stoic. Not only that but it's so interesting to watch their cultural differences play out, because Ray - while being emotionally intelligent - is still in this American Macho mindset. Fraser's still in his arrogant 'I'm Canadian so I'm smarter than Americans' mindset. And we know over the course of the show they both break away from those things. (Seriously love how Ray's already getting under Fraser's skin and Fraser gets that 'you are such a dumbass but I'm restraining myself from screaming' tone. And Ray saying he's gonna pop him one and Fraser not wanting to hit Ray - foreshadowing)
I also found it a little heartbreaking in that scene when Ray's getting beat up by Mason it's supposed to be a joke, but to me it looks like Ray's coping mechanism is pain? Like, there's a running theme with Ray where a lot of the ppl he trusts betray him or leave him. Hmmm... perhaps that's why he and Fraser get along so well?

The fact that Marxists still deny that Marx was an anti-Semite is remarkable given how incredibly obvious it is. You don't even need to read the private correspondence where he calls people "Jew n*ggers" repeatedly and talks about how grotesque, for example, an art trader named Moishe's "Jewish hooked nose" is in great detail over half a page. Just read the text explicitly about the subject matter, which Yes is an argument in favour of Jewish civil rights but which also contains clearly and obviously anti-Semitic ways of thinking about Jewish people. A degree of sophistry is really necessary to be able to turn-
"Let us consider the actual, worldly Jew – not the Sabbath Jew, as Bauer does, but the everyday Jew.
Let us not look for the secret of the Jew in his religion, but let us look for the secret of his religion in the real Jew.
What is the secular basis of Judaism? Practical need, self-interest. What is the worldly religion of the Jew? Huckstering. What is his worldly God? Money.
Very well then! Emancipation from huckstering and money, consequently from practical, real Judaism, would be the self-emancipation of our time.
An organization of society which would abolish the preconditions for huckstering, and therefore the possibility of huckstering, would make the Jew impossible. His religious consciousness would be dissipated like a thin haze in the real, vital air of society. On the other hand, if the Jew recognizes that this practical nature of his is futile and works to abolish it, he extricates himself from his previous development and works for human emancipation as such and turns against the supreme practical expression of human self-estrangement.
We recognize in Judaism, therefore, a general anti-social element of the present time, an element which through historical development – to which in this harmful respect the Jews have zealously contributed – has been brought to its present high level, at which it must necessarily begin to disintegrate.
In the final analysis, the emancipation of the Jews is the emancipation of mankind from Judaism."
Into something which is not anti-Semitic. It is as clear as any other example of Christian society thinking through its social problems through thinking about Judaism and Jews; of using Jews to think about the world, which in and of itself is extremely questionable even aside from the blatant, obviously anti-Semitic nature of rhetoric around 'money and hucksterism' being the true religion of the Jews. In essence, here Marx is making a direct association being Capitalism and Judaism, and saying that they are one and the same. It is hard not hear echos of the Nazis in the call for "the emancipation of mankind from Judaism", although that is not what he means.
And yes, Marx was halakhically Jewish, this is true - as anti-Semites like Bakunin never tired to point out - but at no point does he himself claim any affiliation or self-identification with Judaism or the Jews. It's just not a functional defense of this stuff.
Anyway, Leftists (marxist and not) read Anti-Judaism challenge.

I was reading a book about the proto-bulgarians in which they say that there is a theory (even not very popular anymore) that proto-bulgarians are coming from a Finno-Ugric nation. Just imagine if that was true. I picture it like that:
UN calls Nikolay, Bayan, Kotrag, Kuber, Alcek and Rumen, when they come they see Estonia and Finland and the UN's like "Um, by the way you are relatives..."
/ It's kinda the same with other theories in which Nikolay's not Slavic.
Something about Nikolay not knowing if he is actually related to his other siblings (the South Slavs) will explain why is he not so close with them (most of them because Nikolay's pretty close with Croatia). /

Znojmo beef. An extra plate for the ancestors at Koleda. Also the first use of this table runner based off of two patterns from a 1970s Czechoslovakian embroidery book.
Zjonmo is the district that my great-grandparents emigrated from.
