Thalia Tran, a South East Asian girl, being cast as Mai is huge.
Not only does she look fantastic for Mai (she’s already got the bangs!), but this casting recognizes that the Fire Nation is largely SEA inspired, when the community is often overlooked. Can’t wait to see her talent on screen.
Carinderia
The term "carinderia" is believed to have originated from the Tagalog word "kari", borrowed from the Indian word "curry". The dish was adopted by Filipinos either from trades, regions or from Indian immigrants, and thus "karihan" or "kariyan" was used to describe a place where food, particularly the Filipino dish "kare-kare," was served. By observation, the hispanicization to some Tagalog words, where most store names in Spanish are formed from the name of the main product they sell and putting the ending '-ería' (e.g. panadería, frutería, perfumería). As a result, the word "carinderia / karinderya" was coined and used up to the present day.
The month of April has a lot to celebrate and raise awareness such as Earth Month, Filipino Literature Month, and Filipino Food Month, reminding us to savor our culture and be mindful of nature.
UPDATE : WB released their statement, their reason is verbatim to my post above, alas, my prideful son-of-a-gun country won't take it for anything but a lame excuse. C'est la vie, no movie for me and my like-minded girlies. It's a man, man, man world.
Where's the infamous tongue line?
.
Nothing in this map make sense anyways, because it's a child plaything. I just wanna watch the movie, idc if it's bad or good. I wanna see my Barbie girls.
.
I feel like my country banned this on a whim, there's no pre-realse showing, just straight up said on the news that she was banned due to the South Ch*na Sea Line. They don't even let the people seen the suppose scene (unlike other movie like Uncharted, where they show the scene first and then banned since it was slipped through the check). However, I highly doubt that Barbie, a movie directed, produced, made by mostly women had any message like that.
.
The map is not based on the real map, it's a child recreation of what a world map look like. There's no way to tell that's the intention was to hurt SEA people, such as I.
I just wanna see for myself, but clearly there's no way to see the Barbie movie. it was banned entirely before showing.
.
Clearly, I don't think WB will say anything about this because they made their choice that their prefer audience is Chinese moviegoers.
TLTR: Personally, I think the Barbie movie is unjustly banned on unfounded evidence and I need to rant.
About a while ago, @hphm-jeniferltheman made an OC based on the various cyprids or creatures from her culture. [Named; Kapoya] and I love it a lot! A little later, another user; @akaisenhatake made their own OC of the same theme. [Named; Aaron]
Not wanting to miss out on such a concept that can highlight some of South East Asia’s strange monsters, I decided to do a little research and something caught my eye.
Legends among village folk and fishermen in some parts of the Malaysian Peninsula tell tales of a mysterious phenomenon that they witnessed and survived to tell the tale. A creature that is suggested to be larger than the boats due to the amounts of bubbles it produces from beneath the murky waters.
- Meet Anis -
The anthropomorphic version of the Sulur Bidar (Su-lur Bi-da-r). In the actual version, The Sulur Bidar is described as a Man-eating carpet monster who looks like a normal carpet/ tikar (a type of woven mat) with snake head for tendrils on each corner. (The first picture is the official)
If you ever get too close. The creature will unleash its heads and drown its victims like a burrito and consume. Looking into it further, the Sulur Bidar is also described to have a foul odor when it surfaces. In some illustrations, they have one of the heads be replaced with a woman’s head.
As you can see, this isn’t the exact version you may think of. That is because I had to play a little fast and loose with the description. My version of the Sulur Bidar is a sort of humanized version of the creature.
In some ways a twisted version of the Lamia; The half-human and half-snake woman but instead of a snake’s tail, its a snake’s head with her limbs replaced by a pair of snake heads as well.
- Basic Information -
Anis is the human name of the Sulur Bidar. She is based on Sucy from < Little Witch Academia > Anis is beautiful and a little mysterious. When she’s not being a river mermaid, she will cover herself up in layers upon layers of cloth to hide her snakes and shop for clothes and proper food since humans to her are, junk food.
The snake heads each have names, Named after an Icebreaker game known locally among school cadets as; [Tepi, Depan, Belakang] Translation; Side, Front, Back. As for the names, Anis is a Left-dominant. So her left hand- I mean, left snake head is; Tepi. At the lower half of her body is the “Kakak” (older sister) addressed as; Depan and the non-dominant is her right; Belakang.
That is all I have about her for now. I will make her official eventually but for now, its all just doodles. As for her connection to Sadie and Hector...That is still in the works. That is all for now.
non-western art history is seriously so undervalued and not given the attention it deserves, so if you see this post reblog this with some of your favourite non-western artists or pieces of art
