Okay I'm captivated by Hyacinth Dumond. Why did she run away, and what makes her realize she can never go back? What makes her earn her place in Maleficent's heart? Any random headcanons welcome ♥︎

You act like I have anything for Hyacinth planned and I’m not just thriving off of mystery and vibes. 😝

For real though, she’s one of the OCs where I don’t have a lot of actual plot to go off of, so watch me make it up in real time as I type this. (It’s where I do my best work, tbh).

She ran off due to a siege on her castle. A major celebration was taking place before the attack and she’s scared to go back, fearing that the rest of her family didn’t make it out, or that her kingdom has been overthrown completely and she won’t have a home or a family to go back to. Of course, she doesn’t immediately confess all of this to Maleficent or Aurora. Once she does, however, Maleficent goes to survey her homeland, and finds it in ruins. No information on her family, but her home is essentially gone.

And this is what first endears Maleficent towards her. She sympathizes with Hyacinth's fear and grief over losing something so important to her and so she attempts to give her a real home in the Moors. Though Hyacinth had initially reacted to her in fear, she quickly changes her opinion, and Maleficent becomes a comforting presence to her and she never treats her like she’s some evil creature as so many have in the past. They understand each other's differences, acknowledge them, but don’t let them put a barrier between them, which, I guess, ultimately leads them to being perfect for one another.

It seems in Joker: Folie à Deux (2024), Harley's "theme song" will be That's Entertainment! by Judy Garland, which I think is an interesting choice because of how it relates to the first film and Harley's character herself. For one, Joker's theme in the first was That's Life by Frank Sinatra, which was about the ups and downs of being an entertainer, but serves as a mostly positive message of not giving up. In Joker (2019) it's used for Arthur Fleck's character in a darker way, with the message being warped. Now it's about the ups and downs Arthur faces as a mentally ill adult, with his way of getting "back on top" being to kill people and ruin himself completely, fully becoming the entertainer, the titular: Joker.

That's Entertainment! seems it will be used similarly, with it being a rather cheerful song about showbiz and Hollywood, although there are some darker undertones about how entertainment is just a form of escapism for audiences, using film, music and performance art to cope with, and sometimes even forget, about how harsh life is. Since a majority of Joker (2019) was about Arthur's own coping mechanisms and forms of escapism through comedy, the Murray Franklin show and Sophie Dumond, it wouldn't suprise me if the sequel follows suit. Whether it be another story of Arthur trying to cope with reality, or it focuses more on Harley and her own form of escapism, it seems clear that one way or another the two will turn to entertainment to distract them from their lives, and perhaps will be the entertainers themselves, likely as their Harley Quinn and Joker persona's. Hell even the titles make sense. In the first film, Arthur's trying to cope with his life and the song is simply saying "That's life!" In the sequel, he's already gone crazy and become the Joker, his entertainer persona, alongside Harley, thus: "That's entertainment!"

At first frightened of her, Hyacinth bursts into tears, thus softening Maleficent's rage. Maleficent relents and offers her shelter in the Moors for the night. When morning comes, Hyacinth comes to realize that she has nowhere to go and Aurora convinces Maleficent to take pity on her and let her live amongst the creatures of The Moorlands, eventually earning her a place in Maleficent's heart.
