He pulls himself from Christopher’s doorway and pads into the kitchen. Buck knows that sleep will evade him, because the exhaustion he felt when he left the station after they got back from the scene of the accident left him as soon as he got home. Something vibrates under his skin, buzzing next to the blood in his veins.
He can’t sleep, but he can cook.

One piece of paper slides towards him. Eddie stops it with his hand, lips tilting when he sees one of Christopher’s famous cat drawings surrounded by hearts.
I love you, Dad. You are doing so good and you’re so brave. We will always be here for you no matter what. Like you said, you will feel better soon. You are my hero.
…or, the drawings keep coming.

"He’d once reminded Chim that tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone, and while the past couple of years have only proven him correct time and time again, Eddie’s spent a lifetime running from his own good advice, and he’s barely learned how to slow down long enough for it to catch up to him now. And arguing with Frank about it – Chim and Maddie were actually dating, Buck and I are very much not – had only earned him a tired stare in response, one lasting long enough for Eddie to admit that his heart hadn’t bothered with that same distinction.
So, yeah, he knows he’d been right to encourage Chim then, and thinks maybe Frank’s right to do the same for Eddie now, but however much progress he’s made in the past several weeks of therapy, whatever trauma he’s begun to untangle, being honest with Buck about this might be the only thing more overwhelming than being honest with himself."

When Eddie tells Buck how he feels, it's only the beginning, both of them having work to do before they're finally ready for happily ever after. Still, they're never very far apart while they wait. Set at the end of (shortly after?) 5b.

Bobby is oblivious. “What’s the damage?”
“Not much, cap,” says Buck. He has a smear of soot across his forehead, which if anything makes his blue eyes even bluer. May has long since gotten over her dumb girly crush on him, and of course she now has Darius, but she can’t deny how good-looking he is. Next to him, Eddie rests his helmet against his hip, pushing the hair off his forehead, and someone actually sighs.
“He’s so hot,” May hears her whisper to a friend.
If only you knew, May thinks amusedly.

“Oh,” Greg says, his face falling, “that’s Lucifer.”
Buck lets out something between a laugh and a cough.
“Lucifer,” he repeats.
“It's a long story,” Greg says, tugging on the collar of his polo, his name tag clinking. “He's—not exactly well socialized, and he really, really hates—“ he starts, except he’s interrupted by Eddie’s voice, the first words Buck has heard him say since they dropped Chris off at Hen and Karen's.
“Hi,” Eddie says, crouching right under the bright red sign – which, now that Buck’s close enough to read it, says DO NOT PET – and reaching his fingers toward the bars.
“—men,” Greg finishes, his voice weak, frozen mid-step like he’s not sure if he should be hauling Eddie away while there’s still time. “He hates men. Usually.”

If anyone would ask Buck, he might say it all started the day Eddie’s not-so-ex-wife up at the firehouse to confront him.
If Carla caught Buck at the right moment, he’d probably admit that it actually started the day Eddie ended up bringing Christopher to the firehouse.
If Hen ever asked him, with that look in her eye that Buck could never give a name to, he would likely agree that it started getting a little out of hand for him the night he and Eddie took Christopher to see Santa.
If Maddie were to push him on the matter, he’d have to admit that it really started to click for him the night she called him out on it.
When Eddie asked him when it all started, Buck had to be honest with himself.

“You stayed,” is all Eddie says a little dumbly, a little in awe, and Buck’s quiet soft rambling comes to a sudden stop.
“Yeah, I was just—” he starts to explain about the mail again, gesturing to the door, when he seems to get the gist of what Eddie’s really saying, and his shoulders slump down a little then with a release of tension; “Eddie, of course I stayed.”
Of course.
Of course, because his son called him. Christopher called Buck, and Buck came running. Buck busted down the door. Buck got Eddie on his feet. He got Christopher settled, and reassured, and then he led Eddie out of the rubble of his room and over to the dining table.

And of course, because the universe is always looking for new ways to fuck with Eddie, all of this stress and anxiety has decided to take the form of the worst possible symptom a single father who works 24 hour shifts could experience:
Insomnia.
It’s past 3am and Eddie is scrolling mindlessly on his phone when he first stumbles across the ad.
Some people, when they go online shopping at night, buy things they don’t need. Like a Fitbit or a novelty t-shirt.

Eddie needs a hug and some sleep. Buck, quite literally, offers his services.

Happy new episode day everyone! 🎉🎉🎉
I wanted to get this out before the episode goes live and I’m hopin o can get everyone else done this week so I can then do a more general costume post for the episode looking at all the characters rather than individual focus! I’m sorry it’s ended up as an Uber long post! As always thanks to all the gif makers who’s gifs I’ve shamelessly stolen to make my mountain of text look prettier and show my points!
As ever this is a continuation of my costume metas which you can read here, here, here and here.
I’m going to look at Christopher in two separate parts - firstly the suit shopping scene because I have a suit Goldilocks theory (and this is partly because kids only wear suits at certain events - not in more day to day and work scenarios like adults!)
- his old suit that he wore to his mother’s funeral is too small.
- new suit he’s trying in to please his fathers girlfriend is too big and doesn’t fit properly (telling that he’s tried on several).
- the next time we see Chris in a suit I expect it to fit him perfectly (Manifesting at Buddies wedding 🤣)
- These suits are a literal metaphor for where Chris is mentally and emotionally and his costuming is important because he’s a character we don’t really often see away from Eddie or Buck.
I’m not saying the old suit is too small because he doesn’t still love his mom, because he absolutely does and he always will, but she can never come back into the picture. We as humans continue to grow and develop and change even, and especially, when we loose someone close to us (I speak from personal experience here - I lost my mum at 18 - I will always love her and she will always be a part of me, but I know I’m a different person than I would’ve been because she is no longer a physical presence in my life providing support and guidance - I wonder if she’d be able to recognise the me I am now.) Chris may not be cognisant of this yet, because he’s still a child, but to us as the audience the suit is a physical representation of his personal growth as well as his physical growth as a child, the fact it doesn’t fit properly shows us he’s not yet there.
Tumblr media
The suit shop suit is also showing us, the audience, Christopher’s opinion on Eddieana as a couple - it doesn’t fit and he is manifestly uncomfortable! The only other time we’ve seen him act out in any way when Eddie told him in s4 that he was dating Ana and this suit is a continuation of that.
- an ill fitting suit and it’s interesting that it’s grey - he won’t be the focus of the scene even though other aspects of the mise en scene initially pull you that way (that it’s supposed to be Chris they’re shopping for, shop assistant and everyone are focused on him - except the camera and sound etc) - an aside to say I love the use of mirrors and both Eddie and Chris being seen in reflection - the representation of not being one’s true self (911 uses this concept really effectively- think Bobby getting back into the dating game in s1 and all the times the mirrors on the fire trucks or mirror reflections have been used!) - they are both trying to make the other happy by projecting what they think the other needs - neithers reflection looks comfortable in that moment even though they’re trying - an indication that they’ve not spoken with each other about it, they’re just following along with a projected image!
Tumblr media
On to the rest of Christopher’s outfits!
we have no real idea how he felt about the break up - because we haven’t been shown his reaction, but we can make some assumptions based on his clothing. This season Chris has had some different outfit choices from previous seasons and they reflect what I’ve previously said about Buck being in smart and patterned shirts around Taylor. I should also add that the outfits Chris has worn in previous seasons are really interesting in relation to how his personality is developing into a blend of Eddie, Shannon and Buck (I might do an entire post on this alone when I get some time!!) Chris has had 5 scenes thus far and they all reflect his comfort levels (and also to a subconscious extent his fathers) especially related to Ana and Eddie - hard to get a read on anyone else because he’s not really been around anyone else yet.
Tumblr media
Green poisonous creatures tee - aside from the rather obvious poisonous creatures, the shirt is green - not quite the army green of Eddie’s, but it’s in that tonal area - he’s going into battle for his dad - the brighter shade is also interesting because it sits in the spectrum between the subtle shades of Eddie (reflecting his quieter more stoic personality) and the brighter tones of Bucks clothing (again reflective of Bucks more outwardly loud personality) - perhaps, and I might be reading more into this than is there, but it’s something I would’ve done, (and the costume designer will have been involved in season arcing conversations so will know where Buddie is headed at this point - lucky Alyana!!) as a way of showing that Chris’s personality is becoming a blend of both Eddie and Bucks - that Chris is prepared to be a it louder when he needs to be - that Chris is the one that drops the info to the Dr about the shooting holds this theory up and it’s his way of fighting for his dad and getting him both some support and for Eddie to acknowledge he needs some help - that it’s being instigated by chris is an important and wonderful thing because Eddie will always do stuff to make sure his son is ok so for them to signal chris is willing to do the same is just amazing and shows the father son bond and all through a t-shirt, never doubt that designers do thing intentionally (even if it’s to play with the audience’s minds). 😍
When Chris and Ana visit the firehouse we see Chris in a pretty formal outfit for a 10 year old considering it’s also a heatwave (we’ve seen Chris in shirts before, he does wear them fairly frequently. When around Ana he never wore t-shirts in previous seasons which makes the green tee from above the exception and the reason why is obvious!). Again the shirt is slightly over sized, but it’s also patterned - the pink and blue check which from a distance reads as a purply red colour and is pretty busy, this all matches what I’ve said previously about Bucks shirts indicating his discomfort around Taylor - formal = not comfortable - putting up a front or presenting an ideal, and the pattern = disordered thinking and lack of mental comfort. All of this is signalling that Chris is not happy being left with Ana so he’s putting up a front. We know if he’s been with Carla he’d have been much more casually dressed - we’ve seen it in previous series, which is why this outfit was so important and jarring!
Tumblr media
I can never never never get enough of this hug btw!!
I can’t find a Gif so you’ll have to take my word for it or go watch the (cringe fest of Ana) scene again. Chris’s yellow shirt is an acid almost neon yellow - it’s super bright - the brightest thing in the whole scene by a long way and it’s meant to draw our eye - it’s as much a signpost for us as it is for Eddie - Chris is the way out of the darkness, he is Eddie’s guiding light, a route out of the mental darkness that has preceded, the blackout (which is a metaphor for most of the main characters internal turbulence at this time) and in some ways ties in with the green shirt from the hospital (I wish I could fully see the design on it to see if it revealed more).
We’ve seen Chris in yellow a couple of times, and they’ve been important.
Tumblr media
the tsunami - which cemented his bond with Buck, separate from Eddie.
Also at Mays graduation party - where we saw Buck stepping into a fatherly role (mays message board) and cementing the Buckley-diaz family dynamic (that this is happening at a time when we now know Eddie is changing/ has changed his will makes it even more pertinent!).
Tumblr media
The blue tee Chris is wearing bed is super interesting to me - this is one of the few times we’ve seen him in a single colour t-shirt (especially when he’s in pyjamas!). Normally Chris is either wearing multi colour tees (such as the striped ones we’ve seen him in previously), patterned pyjamas, or t-shirts that have logos on them. In fact (off the top of my head) the only instance prior to this I can remember Chris wearing a single colour t-shirt is when Eddie comes home from the hospital (and fun fact it was a mini Henley in army green!). There could be several reasons for this - blue is considered a calming colour and Eddie is seeking the calming comfort of his son, he’s not in need of guidance at this point in time (the universe doesn’t need to scream at the moment for more than one reason) so there is no graphic logo (as an aside we don’t even see the solar system mobile in this scene!) also the fact that it’s what I term a ‘jewel’ shade (which is the colour spectrum they tend to put Buck in fyi,) is designed to re-emphasise the importance of Christopher to Eddie - the importance of family.
Tumblr media
I can’t wait to see what Chris is wearing in future episodes, his costumes are always so interesting and I’m expecting a return to graphic tees and colour ways that match both Eddie and Buck at different times! I’m definitely going to have to run a closer look at his outfits since S2 in more detail, especially around when he is and isn’t wearing stripes because I have a theory about 911 characters in stripes, but I need to check it holds up I’ve just not had the time to look at it yet!! And one other thing I need - Eddie in yellow, to support another theory I have (and the yellow from the crossover doesn’t count even though it made him look so pretty 😍)

why you can't compare buddie to destiel (from someone who ships both)
this is kind of addressing the recent negativity in the buddie tag, but it's also a collection of my thoughts and reasoning for being buddie-positive despite my experiences with destiel and spn in general. the text of 911 is not really discussed at all, and this is relatively spoiler-free, so if you're thinking of watching 911 I encourage you to read it. if you haven't seen both shows it probably won't make perfect sense, but I wrote this with spn fans who haven't seen 911 in mind, since that's most of my followers (and also seems to be where much of the negativity was coming from) pretty long post under the cut to save your dash
I just want to prepare y'all for the fact that buddie could be the slow burn will they/won't they mlm romance we've been waiting for practically forever.
at this point it's not fair to call it queerbait because where their relationship is now fits the characters and their development. this is not like destiel, where there were many moments over the years that could've ended with them getting together and it would've made sense with the story. buddie right now is in this sweet, wholesome pre-relationship kind of place, which on its own is a compelling dynamic and so fun and good to see. a resolution of it right now would feel out of character—they both still have some development to do before that would feel natural. and so, I don't think we can really call it queerbaiting unless the characters get to that point and there is still no resolution.
also I'd like to point out the overall positivity from the cast when it comes to buddie. both Eddie's and Buck's actors have said (I'm paraphrasing cast statements in this post unless they are in quotations) positive things about the pairing, and Buck's actor has said that he likes the interpretation of Buck as queer, and he would be happy if the writers took his character in that direction. also Eddie's actor with "that's what they all say" when buddie was referred to as a "bromance". Jennifer Love Hewitt, who plays Buck's sister (another main character), is very supportive of buddie, saying she's "rooting for it", that it would be "amazing", she doesn't "see how it couldn't happen one day". this was in response to hearing that a fan insists Buck and Eddie will be a couple. She flat-out said "I think so, too." She jokes about buddie with Buck's and Eddie's actors all the time. Also, my favorite bit from the video of her saying all this, "Let's manifest it together!"
It's safe to say this is a VERY different environment to spn. I don't think I've ever seen a cast this positive about a show's main non-canon queer ship before. NEVER. I think it's safe to say that if/when buddie is canonized, the cast will be just as excited as the fans—at least JLH will be! Add into the fact that the show's PR seems to be leaning into bi buck and buddie right now, it's a VERY different vibe than spn had, definitely. There's no gaslighting of the fans here, at least not that I've seen. also, although 911 has a large casual viewership, I think it's safe to say the GA would not be upset by buddie—there are only 3 serious, long-term romantic relationships involving main characters in this show, and one of them is a lesbian marriage with two children. And yes, the characters are shown being lesbians, it's not just a stated fact; the audience is privy to their relationship (and their interactions with their adorable kids). I think it's safe to say that buddie would go over well with the fans, even the casual viewers (of which there are many). buddie doesn't seem to be a huge divider in fandom like destiel is, either. reactions generally seem to be either "I ship it" or "I don't care either way."
Also I'd like to point out that while yes, it's possible that buddie is only bait (which would be disappointing), there's a reason queerbaiting works. people WANT to be queerbaited, because it's nearly indistinguishable from a slow burn will they/won't they queer romance. queerbaiting allows fans to make theories, create fan content (including fic), and keeps them engaged with the dynamic and the show. fans who are vulnerable to queerbaiting want a slow burn will they/won't they queer romance, which is currently an almost completely untapped market. spn could've tapped it, but despite the huge fandom they did not. there are SO MANY people outside of spn fandom who want a slow burn mlm romance, one that keeps the audience guessing, one that's will they/won't they, one that is not guaranteed, and that is why queerbaiting works so well. the audience doesn't just want the payoff, they also want the build-up. the longer the build-up, the higher the payoff, and the suspense of the build-up is gone if you know from the start that the payoff is definitely coming. that's part of why malec from shadowhunters didn't fully tap this market—there was no question of if, only the question of when (which wasn't really a question either, given there was an episode in season 1 literally titled "malec" when they got together.) the characters were always queer, the show being an adaptation of a book series where they were in a relationship and eventually had children together.
this was why November 5th was such a big deal—fans were so far past the will they/won't they aspect of destiel, firmly believing that destiel would always end as a "won't they" and not a "will they" that when cas confessed his romantic love for dean, destiel trended on Twitter over the US election. you all know that story, but maybe not everyone reading this knows that after Nov. 5 there was a case of hundreds if not thousands of spn fans experiencing love sickness because of the confession scene. the payoff of making destiel fully canon (and reciprocated, in English) would've been huge. fans would've been throwing their money at the c/w.
which leads me to the possibility (this is not at all me saying that I think this happened or even is likely, just that it's one possibility that /could/ have happened) that buddie started as bait, that the writers never intended for them to be a couple, but saw fan reactions to buddie during season 2 and started to lean into it in season 3 (and 4 so far, but it just started so I don't want to make any generalized statements about it) possibly still as bait or maybe not deciding yet if they'll go anywhere with it. and then maybe they saw destiel trending on November 5th, realized just how BIG the market for a slow burn will they/won't they mlm romance is, and said "hey, we already have the foundations for one of those. why not go for it and draw in all those viewers who clearly want one so badly?"
if buddie goes canon, because the cast and PR have been so positive about it, unlike spn, and because of the text of the show itself, the show's creatives could VERY EASILY claim that they were never baiting, that it was all an intentional slow burn will they/won't they romance from the beginning, and most people would believe them; there isn't really any evidence to the contrary, although I am sure there would be at least a few fans convinced it started as queerbaiting, and there might not be any evidence to refute that, either.
the point is that 911 is currently sitting on a gold mine. if they play their cards right, and execute buddie well, they will monopolize this market that old straight white men serving as network executives have failed so far to really tap into. they queerbait without the payoff, which gives the show a reputation among those in the market who haven't seen it, guaranteeing they will never watch it. shows in this vein: sherlock (huge reputation for queerbaiting and a finale fans didn't like) and spn (huge reputation for queerbaiting and a finale fans didn't like). spn got so, so close with cas's confession but then continued to gaslight its fans, and PR did not lean into destiel AT ALL. if 911 did buddie? the PR team would be all over it. it would be a moneymaker, big time, and Fox knows it. if buddie, or even just bi buck, went canon, tumblr would be all over it. viewership for the show, which is already impressive, would skyrocket. 911 would monopolize this market, because fans wary of queerbaiting would watch it with the knowledge that the payoff is there, and there really wouldn't be a competitor until other shows saw the success of buddie and followed suit with their own pairings, and given the fact that the market specifically wants /slow burn/ queer romances, that might take a couple years. that puts 911 in a really good position, where suddenly the fandom of the show, not just the GA, is very large and likely very dedicated to the show. the success of canon buddie might just change the landscape of TV in the coming years, showing execs that while queerbaiting does work, actually going through with it is really where the money is. 911 would not just monopolize the market for a while; it would pioneer it.
if buddie never goes canon, I would probably be a bit disappointed at the wasted potential, but unless the characters get to that point where canon buddie seems like the most logical outcome and they /don't/ go for it, I won't be truly upset because I don't think it's fair to claim its queerbaiting until then. I can't tell you how likely it is that buddie will be canon at some point, but it seems FAR more likely than destiel /ever/ did, and we ended up getting cas's confession in the end. I have hope, despite being hurt so badly by spn. 911 is a genuinely great show with some fantastic writing, and they don't leave chekov's gun unfired, unlike spn.
really, it comes down to this: if Jennifer Love Hewitt is allowed to clown for buddie, then so am I, and I'll enjoy this show—which is amazing even without canon buddie—while I apply my clown makeup.

Hey quick question did you catch what someone on here in a text post was talking about in that scene with Eddie and Ana at the store? Basically someone said it seems like that scene was weird and maybe Eddie wasn’t acting like his usual self because he was uncomfortable maybe with how Ana could possibly be using this (this, as in their relationship or whatever they are- whatever she wants them to be- this, why they’re suit shopping and trying to present themselves a certain way in certain clothing) to her family who Eddie and Chris will be meeting? To show them that ‘yeah I didn’t take the whole married and have a kid route and I went to school and did good and now have a good job with a handsome man and his son is sweet too and my life is great too’ - as if to prove a point? Idk what she’s thinking because her personality, emotions, and backstory are so flat and barely there and that’s not even me being mean it’s just a fact blame the writers and Tim. And the way she was flirting with him and I forget exactly what she said but the person on here who brought all this up also pointed out that Ana is discussing Eddie’s handsome looks in a flirty way and how she undresses him or whatever idk but they brought that up because yeah Eddie is handsome and hot as fuck. He really is but in the past we have seen a few times where women have flirted with him and told him to his face that he’s hot and it visibly made him uncomfortable. Eddie isn’t stupid he knows he isn’t ugly but he doesn’t seem comfortable with women pointing his good looks out like that even if it’s harmless flirting. He doesn’t like it. And whatever Ana said, Eddie seemed to brush it off and this person discussed that as well and I thought that was interesting
Firstly, sorry it took me so long to get to this🙈
I don't recall that text post but I have a hard time believing through all my perusing that I didn't see it 🤣 I think it's a very interesting point! I hadn't thought about it like that, but given last episode, I think it's very possible this is all a performative act on Ana's part as well. Last episode was the first time I could get some kind of read on her character (and the first time I was actively aware of her existence LMAO) and it was all very much .... Disjointed. So, yeah. It will be interesting how it plays out when we get to actually hear some of her own opinions on the matter.
In a larger sense I know it'll most likely be a serious convo and about more that what Eddie's heart wants, but man I'd love for her to just be like "Ill never be Buck, nobody could ever replace Buck, and I see that now," and just leave Eddie fucking Error 404'd.

Prompt Buck starts working at 126 after the trial. Eddie comes to Texas to get him back
“Sounds sad” Yeah Grammarly I know
Read on ao3 here
Eddie’s hands shook as he stepped off his plane into the Austin airport. Even inside the building, the humidity was a stark contrast to Los Angeles, something he hadn’t missed.
He maneuvered his way through the airport with little trouble, it was smaller than most, and not many people were coming and going on a Wednesday afternoon.
While he waited on his Uber to arrive, he sent a text to Bobby telling him he had arrived and another to Christopher to tell him he was safe and that he loved him.
His finger hovered over the name below Bobby’s, Buck. All of the texts he’d sent to Buck in the last week had gone unanswered, and his read receipts were off so he didn’t even know if he’d gotten them.
Two weeks after Buck had taken them to court and the team had shunned him outside of the lawyer’s office, Buck had disappeared.
No one had heard anything from him in three days when Maddie came to the station with a box of Chimney’s things from her house, informing them that Buck had moved to Texas.
None of them had known what to say as she stormed out of the station. Hen’s eyes were wide, Chimney was clutching the box uncertainty and Bobby had a distinct look of self-hatred that Eddie shared.
Eddie whipped out his phone and dialed Buck’s numbed but the call went straight to voicemail.
“Buck please pick up. Call me when you get this. Buck, I’m so sorry.”
*****
Every message he’d sent to Buck was met with radio silence. He couldn’t take it anymore, he’s packed up, dropped Christopher off with Bobby and Athena, and taken off to Texas.
Athena’s final words of warning rang in his head, “Fix this.”
Those two words scared him more than any war zone. He feared Athena’s wrath if he didn’t come home with Evan Buckley right behind him.
The 126 was not what he expected. The outside was a traditional brick, industrial-looking firehouse. But the inside was sleek and modern, metal and dark colors.
The house was seemingly empty except for a tall man who turned to look at Eddie when he entered.
“Hey man,” he said, deep Texan accent startling but also not surprising.  “Can I help you?”
“Yeah uh, I’m looking for someone. Evan Buckley? His sister said I could find him here.”
“I guess that makes you Diaz then?”
“Uh yeah.”
“I’ll be right back.”
Eddie nodded as he turned on his heel and ducked into a back room.
*****
“Hey, Buck.”
Buck turned from his conversation with TK and Marjan when Judd called his name.
“What’s up Judd?”
“There’s someone here to see you.”
“Who? No one knows I’m here.”
“Apparently your sister snitched to Diaz. I can tell him to get lost if you want. Just say the word kid.”
“Nah it’s fine. I’ll do it myself.”
“We’re here if you need us,” Mateo said pushing off the counter and puffing out his chest.
“Thanks ‘Teo,” Buck chuckled.
Buck left the kitchen and headed back out into the main garage. Eddie was standing nervously between the two rigs.
“Hey Buck,” his voice was small and his smile was weak.
“What are you doing here Eddie?”
“Groveling?” Eddie’s laugh was just a little self-deprecating. “Maddie came to the station and ripped us a new one and we sure as hell deserved it.”
“What makes you think that?” Buck scoffed.
“We were all terrible to you,” Eddie admitted. “Especially me. And you totally reserve the right to punch me in the face and tell me to go to hell. I deserve it. But I also really wish you would hear me out.”
Buck glanced down at his watch, “Okay look. I get off at ten. If you want to talk, we’ll do it then. Neutral territory, I’ll text you the address.”
“Okay. Thank you, Buck.”
“Yeah. I’ll see you then.”
*****
At ten-thirty, Buck ducked into a downtown restaurant that he’d been introduced to by TK and Carlos to find Eddie waiting for him in a booth with waters for both of them.
“Hey Buck,” he greeted as Buck sat down.
“Hey,” Buck took a sip of his drink. “So what did you want to tell me?”
“We miss you, Buck. And I can’t speak for everyone else, but I know Bobby is beating himself up for how we treated you. And so I am. I don't expect you to forgive us now, or even ever, I understand why you wouldn’t. But Maddie misses you, Chris misses you, Buck I miss you. And I’m sorry for never letting you know how much you mean to me. Buck, you’re my best friend, you’re my family, you’re the only one who holds me together some days. I love you Buck, more than I’ve ever told you. And I’m sorry for not saying that sooner. Buck come home, please. Come back to your family.”
“I don’t know if I’m ready to come back yet. There’s a lot of things in LA that I’m not ready to face yet.”
“I understand,” Eddie said.
“But what if you stayed here?”
“What?”
“Stay here with me. Let’s work out whatever this is,” Buck said, gesturing between them. “And then maybe we can go home. I don’t want to stay in Texas forever, but these people are like family too. And I don’t want to say goodbye to them or you.”
“What about Christopher? I can’t just leave him in LA.”
“Then go home and get him. Bring him back.”
“Buck I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”
“Why not?”
“Obviously we both have some things to work out. So stay in Texas as long as you think you need to. I’ll still be there when you get home. I’ll be waiting for you when you’re ready.”
“I love you, Eddie,” Buck’s voice was thick with tears.
“I love you too,” Eddie stood and pressed a kiss to Buck’s head. “I’ll see you soon.”
**Two Months Later**
“What’s that?” Chris asked when there was a knock on the door.
“I don’t know buddy. Probably Amazon or something.”
Eddie went to answer the door and gasped when he saw Buck standing on his doorstep.
“Buck?”
“Buck’s here!”
Christopher pushed past Eddie and crashed into Buck’s legs.
“Hey buddy,” Buck crouched down to hold Christopher tight.
Eddie followed suit, kneeling to wrap his boys in his arms.
“Hi,” Eddie whispered.
“Hi.”
“Welcome home.”

24 from the prompt list pleaseeee 😊
god, i love this prompt sfm, thanks, nicole!
#24. “I know it’s the middle of the night, but can you come over, please?” [when you can’t sleep at night- of mice & men; this song never gets old]
It always takes him time to fall asleep but tonight, for some reason, it feels insurmountable. Usually Eddie can relax his tired, overworked mind long enough to trick it into shutting down. That isn’t the case now and it drives him mad the way he can’t get his brain and body to fall in line with each other. It’s one in the morning, a time when he should be like his son down the hall: fast asleep and shut off to the world for a few hours. But he can’t get that now, despite his best efforts.
Every sound outside his window is magnified. The weight of his blanket doesn’t sit right against his skin. The mattress underneath him feels like a stranger’s despite the well-worn groove it has made that fits his shape. Nothing feels right and it’s making the simple task of sleeping impossible.
Eddie reaches a hand to his nightstand, disconnecting his phone from the charger. He squints against the bright light of the screen, his eyes soon adjusting. He knows he shouldn’t reach out now. It’s late. He’s probably asleep by now and yet, Eddie’s finger hoovers over Buck’s name in his contact list, quickly pressing his thumb against the screen to place the call before he loses his nerve.
“Eddie, is everything okay?” Buck asks after three rings, concern clear as day in his voice. Eddie cringes; perhaps he should have sent a text instead. The suddenness of a late night call is more than enough reason to make anyone worry.
“Everything’s fine, everything’s alright,” he insists. “I just...I can’t sleep. I don’t know why I called you, that’s hardly your problem.”
Buck laughs softly. “I don’t mind it though. I was awake, too.”
Eddie wonders at what could be keeping Buck up but he doesn’t press the matter. He’s just grateful he was around to answer the call and is indulging him in conversation. It’s nice to have Buck’s voice in his ear but, admittedly, he would prefer to have his physical company instead. It’s why the next set of words go tumbling out of his mouth before he can stop himself and apply reason to the situation.
“I know it’s the middle of the night, but can you come over, please?”
He hates how desperate the request must make him sound, how childlike or maybe even foolish but he can’t help it. If Buck would even consider the notion for a second, Eddie would count it as a win. But he barely even takes that long; his answer is swift and clear.
“I’ll be there in ten. Hang tight.”
Eddie’s chest feels lighter already and he tries to reel himself in but he can’t help the sense of elation that floods through him. To have a friend like this who would drop everything just because he needed him meant the world. But if he’s being completely honest, at least to himself, he knows that the gesture carries more significant weight than that in his eyes.
To simply matter counts for a lot. To matter to Buck means everything.
~*~
Ten minutes later Eddie’s phone buzzes against the mattress with a text from Buck saying he’s right outside the front door. Eddie hurries out of bed to let him in. Buck is in sweats and a plain white t-shirt but to Eddie, he may as well be dressed to the nines with how appealing he finds him. The shirt is form fitting, hugging each muscle in his taut frame. Buck’s face looks softer at this hour and it endears the man to Eddie all the more.
“Thanks for coming. You really didn’t have to,” he says as he steps aside to let Buck in.
He’s been over more times than Eddie can even begin to count but never in the middle of the night and certainly never for a reason like this. Still, they move with ease around each other despite the fact that this scenario is a new one for them.
“Maybe not but I wanted to.”
Eddie isn’t sure what to do with that, he isn’t sure if he’s reading too much into it and coming up with a meaning to the words that isn’t truly there. He knows the danger that comes in wishing for impossible things.
And yet, he hopes anyway.
Eddie’s gaze lowers briefly before pulling back to Buck’s face. For the first time he isn’t able to look into Buck’s eyes and read his thoughts. It’s so unlike them that for a moment Eddie’s brows furrow, as if he can concentrate hard enough to see into Buck’s mind.
He gives up the effort with a timid smile. Now that he has Buck in front of him at this hour, he isn’t quite sure what to do. In an ideal world they’d rest and wake up in each other’s arms but the idea feels far-fetched. Calls in the middle of the night usually mean something else entirely but that’s not the kind of relationship they have with one another—though Eddie would be lying if he said he had never thought about it.
He figures Buck picks up on his uncertainty because he’s the first one to breach the silence, giving them some clear instruction and something other to do than stand in the foyer looking at one another.
“Why don’t we try actually getting some sleep? Couldn’t hurt, right?”
Eddie nods stiffly and waits to see where Buck thinks this should happen. Buck turns and for a moment, Eddie is so sure he’ll veer off to the living room but he walks right past the opening and down the hall to Eddie’s bedroom. The blinds are somewhat twisted  and there’s enough light coming in from the streetlamps outside to make it easier to see. Buck sinks onto the bed with such familiarity, as if this is a place he rests his head every single night. It makes Eddie’s heart flutter, the ease to which Buck operates inside his home. He always wants this to feel like a safe place for him, too.
Buck settles against a pillow, letting a deep contented sigh escape his lips as Eddie climbs into his side of the bed. Eddie stares up at the ceiling, so acutely aware of the warmth of Buck’s body beside him. At the start of the night this had seemed like a great idea but now that Buck is next to him, sharing his bed no less, Eddie finds his inability to sleep has just increased tenfold. He places his hands against his stomach, still keeping his eyes trained above him, his hands to himself. There’s no telling where he’d let them wander if given the chance.
“Am I making you uncomfortable?” Buck asks, turning to lay on his side in order to face Eddie. Unable to ignore the question and the shift, Eddie follows suit and faces him in turn.
Eddie shakes his head and sighs. “No, it’s not you. I guess my head is a bigger mess tonight than I thought.”
Buck searches his eyes and Eddie stares openly at him, the striped effect of the light through the blinds casting parts of Buck’s face in shadow. It isn’t enough to downplay the curiosity in his expression and Eddie realizes he’s pushing this conversation to places he isn’t sure he’s ready for it to go.
“I’m just glad you’re here. It’s nice...having someone next to me,” he says. “It’s even better that it’s you.”
This time of night makes his lips loose but he can’t find it within himself to regret the words he’s saying.
Buck reaches out a hand and strokes his cheek. Eddie’s heart trembles like an aftershock. Surely Buck has to know what a touch like that would do to him. Eddie’s eyes close and he tilts his head just a bit, allowing his lips to rest against the inside of Buck’s wrist. He can feel the man’s pulse quicken against his mouth. The reaction is enough to make Eddie brave enough to look at him again.
Buck’s mouth hangs slightly agape. “Eddie,” he says softly, a plea or prayer Eddie can’t say for certain but in those two syllables there’s a want.
Eddie tips his chin forward and Buck’s mouth is right there, ready and waiting. Eddie starts out slow, tentative as if making sure this is truly what Buck wants. But from the grip of Buck’s hand on his hip and the not so subtle pull he makes to draw Eddie nearer, there’s no doubt this is everything the other man desires as well.
Buck’s mouth is warm and welcoming, inviting Eddie in. He allows himself to get comfortable, sinking into the moment fully. Maybe they’ll both regret this come morning but here in this present moment, Eddie wants to lose himself entirely, give everything he has and lay it at Buck’s feet. Yes, maybe they’ll feel differently in the light of day, but all Eddie can do is focus on the here and now.
He feels drunk off Buck now, so intoxicating is the rush that comes from being this close to Buck. After a few moments he breaks away, trying in vain to settle his racing heart. He looks to Buck, takes in his bashful smile and soft eyes.
“You don’t know how long I’ve been dying to do that,” Buck says. All bets are off at this hour and Eddie appreciates their ability to be candid with each other now.
Eddie buries his face against the side of Buck’s neck, breathing him in and placing a soft kiss there. He feels as Buck swallows thickly, stunned that he’s able to work his way under Buck’s skin, never mind to this degree. He pulls back and looks at him.
“I wouldn’t be opposed to you doing it again,” he replies, surprising himself with boldness.
Buck chuckles, a throaty quiet laugh that reverberates in the pit of Eddie’s stomach. It’s easily his favorite sound. Buck leans in and kisses him deeply. Sleep has gone from being the thing he wanted most tonight  to the absolute last thing he wants now and Eddie couldn’t be more pleased with that.

If The World Was Ending 14/?
If The World Was Ending Chapter Fourteen: A Lethal Side
Read on AO3.
- ~ - ~ - ~ - ~
“Some things I just cannot change Are you waiting for me to show you the way out? This love has a lethal side I would take the bullet, ah
You feel just like you're wasting a lifetime on me Just give into the feeling we got something real, yeah 'Cause every love song needs somebody to sing
So let me show you I'm what you need before you run away...
Can't hear what those people say Telling you that you're crazy believing in me now And if we march on the front line I would take the bullet...”
~ Runaway - James Carter

‘Because you’re exhausting!’
The words had been playing on repeat in his mind for the past hour, and it didn’t look like it would stop any time soon. Buck felt, not for the first time, that he had made a mistake for filing that lawsuit. That was especially true since it had solved nothing. His friends, his family, had pulled away further. That was none more true than Eddie, who had started to pull away from him even before the lawsuit. Now, he was sure he had completely lost him.
Buck cleared his throat, wiping hastily at his eyes. He decided that he needed to clear his mind, and that it was time to fall back on his usual coping method. So, he stopped briefly at his loft to get changed into his hiking gear. He’d added to the collection in the last two years that he had been with the 118, especially since he was trained in rescue and knew what was needed in case of an emergency.
He’d been part of a lot of hikes, so he knew that things that might seem like overkill, were essential. That meant his headlamp since it was almost sunset, and made sure he checked the batteries on it and brought extra ones just in case. He also made sure he had his LifeStraw Water Filter that he’d recently purchased, since he’d taken to hiking a lot during his recent shifts as the Fire Marshal.
The man sent a text to Maddie telling her he was going for a hike at Griffith Park, which would be open until 9pm, so he had plenty of time for a few hours to go on the hiking trail. When he arrived at the park almost 40 minutes later the sun was almost completely setting, he grabbed his backpack with his supplies but first slipped on his hydration backpack, which was small enough to fit on his front, against his chest. He had enough water for at least a two to three hour hike.
He was twenty minutes into his hike, not having seen anyone on the dark trail this whole time, when his playlist cut off as his phone started to beep furiously. “JARVIS?” Buck asked as he detached his phone from the strap of his backpack.
‘Sir will be with you shortly, Mr. Buckley,’ JARVIS told him. Buck knew that J was an AI, but he had always been pretty expressive. However, he wasn’t sure he’d ever heard him sound as strained as he did now.
“What? Why? What’s going on, J?”
The AI was silent before he started to speak again. ‘Sir was attacked two hours ago by an assailant that I’ve been able to identify as the Winter Soldier.’
This alarmed Buck and he lifted his head, looking for the armor but the dark sky was empty thus far. “Is Tony hurt? Why are you bringing him here?”
‘Sir didn’t have a combat ready armor with him at the time and though he managed to evade capture, he suffered a head injury that’s rendered him unconscious.’
“Why didn’t you take him to the hospital?” Buck demanded. “He could have a concussion!”
‘My protocols are to bring him to the closest person he trusts, and since his healthcare proxy is currently in D.C., you were the closest person to his location.’
Buck ran a hand through his hair, his cap getting knocked off in the process, but not that he noticed in that moment. “Alright… alright,” he muttered. He turned back and started to run back the way he had come, and was glad he hadn’t gone too far down the trail. He reached his Jeep in less than ten minutes, glad that he had kept to his training regiment after he’d started his light duty. After all, lying around doing nothing was more detrimental to his health.
He heard the repulsors then and he lifted his head to see the armor coming in from the west. That meant he had been in Malibu when he’d been attacked. The armor touched down more gently than he would have thought, but then again, JARVIS was the one flying it. It also appeared to be an incomplete armor, so that’s likely why he’d been mostly unprotected from the attack.
“Alright, open her up J,” he told the AI. When he did, Buck was ready to catch Tony as the unconscious man tumbled out. He’d opened his passenger side door ahead of time and easily lifted him and put him inside. “Tony, hey,” he said as he rubbed his sternum and patted his cheek to get him to wake up.
Tony moaned weakly and his eyelashes fluttered but didn’t open. The was blood caked on the side of his head from where he’d been hit and Buck didn’t have time to wonder what exactly it had been. Tony whimpered when he shifted him up further in the seat, making Buck wince.
“Sorry, sorry, but I need you to wake up.” Finally, his eyes opened and Buck couldn’t help grin at him. “There you are.”
“Ev?”
“Yeah, it’s me.” He took his headlamp off as an idea occurred to him, and used that to shine in his eyes. He flinched at the light and that wasn’t a good sign, especially since his pupils were dilated. When the man suddenly leaned out the open door and threw up, narrowly missing Buck’s hiking boots, he knew that he had a concussion, and needed to get him to the hospital to make sure it wasn’t anything worse.
That’s when he noticed the blood at his side and when he lifted his shirt, Buck saw that he’d torn his stitches. “Shit,” he hissed. He reached under his seat for his first aid kit, being thankful for his sister’s paranoia after the truck bombing. He quickly patched the wound, since he didn’t have the supplies to restitch it there and then he buckled him in and ran around to the driver’s side. Buck was relieved when he pulled up his maps amp and saw that there was a medical center less than ten minutes away. As he drove, he had JARVIS call the hospital.
“Tony? Are you awake?” The man groaned. “Do you know where you are?”
“M’in y’r Je’p?” Tony slurred. That didn’t sound good.
“Can you remember what happened?” Buck pressed, needing to see how bad the concussion was.
“Dunno… g’t hit?”
“Do you remember what hit you?”
Tony was silent for too long that Buck reached over and shook him, and sighed in relief when the man flinched. “No… no,” he said, shaking his head but moaned in pain at the movement. “Hurts.”
“I know, but I got you, Tony,” he reassured him. He looked behind him when he saw the blue lights and a cop car, which then pulled along side and then he motioned for Buck to follow him. It seemed JARVIS had also contacted the police department for an escort. Buck gave a thumbs up and followed the black and white cruiser.
As soon as they pulled into the ER, a few nurses and a doctor rushed out with a gurney. Buck told them about the head injury and the torn stitches as they loaded Tony onto the gurney. The cop told him that he’d be guarding Tony as per the instructions of someone named JARVIS. Then he was left alone, not knowing what to do except look at the hospital doors for a few moments before the siren of an arriving ambulance snapped him out of it. He closed the passenger side door of his Jeep and then got back in to find a parking space.
He was lucky to find one, even if it was further away than he would have liked. However, before he could leave the Jeep, JARVIS spoke up again. ‘Mr. Buckley, sir is being tracked.’
“What? By who?”
‘The Winter Soldier.’
“Who is that?” Buck asked a bit hysterically. He didn’t know what was going on. All he knew was that someone had hurt Tony and now they were likely coming to finish the job.
’He is an assassin that’s been sent by HYDRA.’
“Hydra? What is Hydra?”
‘HYDRA is an authoritarian paramilitary subversive terrorist organization bent on world domination. It was very active during World War 2 but with the efforts of Captain America and the Howling Commandos, they were able to destroy it.’
“I’m sensing a but,” Buck groaned where he’d laid his head against the steering wheel. This was spiraling into very dangerous territory, and Buck felt that he was barely keeping his head above water.
‘It seems to have survived and infiltrated SHIELD. Sir discovered this several days ago, as well as a plan to use an algorithm created by a HYDRA scientist to identify people that posed a threat to them and thus be able to eliminate them.’
“He stopped them and then they came after him?” Buck hazarded a guess. He took in several shaky breaths, trying not to have a panic attack right that moment. He was a first responder, a fire fighter that was used to running into a burning building, but this was more Athena’s area. Only, he couldn’t call her, couldn’t call anyone for help.
It was in that moment that Buck truly felt alone. He was alone in this.
‘Yes, that is correct.’
Buck contemplated on what he should do now, wondering if he should go inside, or call the police to warn them. It was just, would they believe him at all? Buck seriously doubted it. He was worried, because right now Tony was unprotected. “What do I do, J? I’m just a firefighter... or rather, I was.” He sighed and ran a hand through his blonde hair. “I can’t help him.”
‘There is a way, Mr. Buckley.’
The man’s head lifted in surprise. “What? How? What do I have to do?” He’d already lost his family at the 118 and didn’t want to also lose Tony. If there was something that he could do, then he would.
‘The Rescue Protocol.’
Buck frowned. “What’s that?”
‘Sir designed armor to your measurements and called it the Rescue armor.’
“What?!”
Before he could ask more, he heard the sound of repulsors once again and rolled down his window as he stuck his head out of it. He saw the suit coming from the east, which he found was weird. “Where is it coming from, J?”
‘Sir designed it and had it built at his lab in New York, because that lab had the equipment for it. He activated the protocol almost three hours ago, but since it was on the other side of the country, it is only now arriving.’
Buck stumbled out of the Jeep and saw not one armor, but two of them. “Wait, that’s two armors.”
‘It is War Machine, Mr. Buckley.’
“Holy shit,” Buck gasped, not believing that he was about to see Rhodes after all these years.
The two armors touched down and the face plate lifted on the War Machine armor. “Evan Buckley, is that you?” the man asked incredulously. The War Machine armor gave Rhodes about four inches, so they were about the same height.
“Rhodes, hey man,” Buck greeted him weakly. As he turned to what JARVIS had dubbed the Rescue armor, he saw that it would likely give him four inches as well. That explained why the Rescue armor looked taller. It was also colored the same blue as his LAFD uniform.
Rhodes pointed at the other armor. “Is it safe to assume this is for you to use?”
Buck ran a hand down his face as he nodded. “I don’t- I don’t know the first thing about how to use it. I kinda just found out literally a minute before you got here.”
“Lucky for you, FRIDAY informed me about the situation going on with Tony, so you might not have to use it.”
“Who’s-?”
‘Colonel Rhodes, incoming from the west,’ JARVIS interrupts them suddenly, voice urgent.
The Rescue armor is opening and Buck yelps as it lunges at him and incases him. He staggers back as the HUD turns on, breathing heavily and an alarm is suddenly beeping. Buck is stunned as his Jeep suddenly explodes in a ball of fire as it is flung to the side and into another car. The instincts he learned from his time in the SEALs kick in as he jumps away, rolling with the momentum, and is shocked at how easy the armor moves around him.
“Evan!” Buck hears Rhodes panicked voice and his vision is suddenly filled with a man with long hair wielding a grenade launcher, which is aimed right at him. He jerks to the side to avoid the grenade, which sails dangerously close to his face and it hits another vehicle that also explodes.
‘Mr. Buckley, may I suggest leaving the area before the hospital takes damage,’ JARVIS tells him.
“How do I do that?!” He yelps as the repulsors at his feet suddenly turn on and he waves his arms around wildly as he starts to lift off the ground, which makes the take off shaky and almost flies into another car.
‘Keep your hands at your side, Mr. Buckley,’ the AI instructs.
Buck quickly does that and the armor shoots into the sky, and it’s only because he’s jumped from a helo into the ocean during the BUD/S training that he doesn’t scream. Of course, he hadn’t made it much longer after passing Hell Week, because he hadn’t been able to turn off his emotions. So, he was very terrified in that moment. Especially when he saw a motorcycle following them with the long haired man on it, and did he have a fucking metal arm?!
“Evan, this way,” he hears Rhodes call. He follows JARVIS’s instructions as he angles his body to follow the man and almost whoops when he’s able to do it without veering too much off course. “We need to get away from the city before we engage.” They’re heading toward the Hollywood Hills, more than likely where there are very little houses.
Buck is totally onboard with that, since the last thing he wants is for someone to get hurt. He tries not to think too closely about what engage actually means, and that he was going to actively attack someone. And shit, he’s thinking about it now.
Then an alarm starts to blare through the speakers and with J’s warning, Buck twists in midair to avoid being hit as their pursuer shoots at them, which sends him into a sudden barrel roll that has him giving a choked off scream. He some how manages to regain control of the —his?— armor and gasps when he sees that the grenade had missed him, but managed to hit a building. Buck becomes alarmed when he sees that it was a house on the edge of where the hills start.
“Shit!” Buck exclaims as he turns, forgetting his fear and even that he’s way out of his element. There are people in danger and he can’t just do nothing. “JARVIS, is there some kind of fire suppressant system in the suit?” He sees as the AI selects the systems but curses when he sees its aimed for it to be used in case the suit is on fire or sparks. “I need something to stop the fire!”
‘There is a water gun on the shoulder,’ JARVIS tells him. Of course he had seen it, which resembled the one that Rhodes had on the War Machine armor, but he had assumed it was a weapon. ‘If you land in the pool beside the house, there are compartments that will open to suck into the suit and that will be directed to the water gun.’
Buck grinned despite himself, because he hadn’t been expecting that. “Wow, I thought it was a gun!”
‘That’s why Sir called it the Rescue armor. He designed it especially for you.’
And Buck could see that now. He hadn’t designed it like a weapon the way he had for Rhodes’s War Machine armor, but like a tool used to rescue people for Buck. Because that is what Buck did, he was a firefighter and he rescued people, and now the name Rescue for the armor made sense. “Alright then, J. Let’s see what this thing can do.” He had the AI connect him to Rhodes and told him that he needed to keep the assassin off his back while he went to put out the fire and see if there had been anyone inside the house.
“Roger,” Rhodes tells him. The War Machine turns and heads toward where the motorcycles is still following them. It also appears as if there are two police cars and one police motorcycle following the man. Whether they were alerted because he was breaking laws to catch up to them or because someone saw him shooting the grenade launcher is unclear, but that doesn’t matter at the moment.
“J, is there like some kind of autopilot on this thing? I don’t think I can land softly enough not to damage the pool.” Buck asked as they fly toward the house. He grins when the AI takes control of the suit and they land. JARVIS relinquishes control almost immediately after and he grins when he sees that the water can also come out of the hands by three individual tubes that can open up at the palms. It’s a good thing the pool is fairly large, and the gallons in it are likely enough to extinguish the flames. If not, there is another pool next door he can use.
“Aright, let her rip, J,” he tells the AI. He braces for the pressure to hit, use to doing it when he handles the hose as a firefighter, but it seems that he doesn’t need to as the suit is immovable. The water leaves the gun and the palms of the armor, and he aims at the worse of the flames. He cuts off the flow when the flames frizzle out, but makes sure there is enough left inside the suit in case there is more fire inside. There is a hole on one side of the house, and he rushes in like he usually does. “LAFD! Is anyone in here?” Buck shouts, forgetting that he isn’t a firefighter with the department anymore.
There is smoke and ash from the destroyed wall in the air and he kicks a few chucks away as he goes further inside. “Hello! Is someone in here?” His voice sounds mechanical and almost resembles what Tony’s does whenever he speaks while in the suit.
That’s when the suit’s HUD displays a scan of the house and it detects three heat signatures. Even then, he keeps calling and soon he hears a voice calling for help. The first person is a man in his early fifties which is the owner, judging by the information that JARVIS is displaying, and that he lives there with his younger wife and fifteen-year-old son. He brings the man out even as he protests. “I’m going to get them out,” he tells him with certainty.
He finds the wife next in a bathroom, a woman in her early forties who is unconscious from a hit to the head. Buck needs to secure her neck and substitutes a towel gently but tightly around her neck, making sure its not enough to strangle her. He then sees a bathrobe and uses the tie of it to secure the towel in place. Now that the neck is secure in case she has a spinal or neck injury, he carries her out.
“Evan, are you clear?” Rhodes calls over the coms, hearing the strain in his voice.
“Almost, Rhodes. I got one more victim inside the house. Give me ten minutes.”
“You got five,” he gasped. Buck jerks his head up as he hears an explosion, but sighs in relief when he sees War Machine still in the air.
“Copy!” Buck yells as he runs back into the house. JARVIS had pulled up the information, so he knows the name of the young man. “Jake! Jake, are you there?” He hears the house groan and knows the explosion caused the whole structure to be unstable, but he doesn’t want to leave until he has the teenager. Buck heads to where the heat signature is coming from, glad there isn’t any more fire, but there are sparks and if the gas line was damaged it could get really dangerous really fast. So he hurries. “Jake!”
He comes upon a room for a teenage girl and decides that he obviously isn’t there. Then he sees movement and turns. “Jake?” he calls as he rushes in. He finds a teenage girl huddled in the corner, confused by her presence there and wondering if he’ll have enough time to find Jake, but knows he can’t leave her there.
“It’s Jenny,” she whimpers as the house shudders.
Buck is confused. “What?”
“That... that’s not my name. It’s Jenny.” She cries out as the house shakes again. “J-Ja... that’s not my name!”
He realizes what she means almost immediately and nods as he kneels. “Alright, Jenny,” he soothes. He holds out his armored hand. “Take my hand, sweetheart. I’ll get you out, alright?”
Her eyes, bluer than even his own, dart up to his face. Then she nods and takes it. Buck lifts her up and carries her out. He deposits her into her father’s waiting’s arms who sobs a thanks for getting his daughter out, and Buck takes a moment to smile.
“Evan!”
“Shit!” he curses when he sees another grenade coming their way and instinctively lifts his hands and lets the water go with all the pressure the suit has, from the water gun as well. It must be more like a water cannon, because it knocks the grenade out of its course, and it hits the house. Buck turns and shields the family from the debris as it seems to hit another support beam and the whole structure comes down.
When he makes sure the family of three is okay, he goes a few steps away and his second take off is more smooth than the first one. He sees the lights of the emergency crews as he goes, and now that he knows the family is safe, he decides to concentrate on the fight that’s coming. Buck had never been a violent person, had never seen combat during his SEAL training, but he also knows that he can’t stand by while this assassin wrecks havoc and harms more people.

Athena had gotten a call from one the police officers in East Hollywood. While she wasn’t able to put any kind of official alert on her family or the 118’s vehicles or homes, they each knew the names of the people closest to them. When one of them was involved is an accident or any kind of incident. Mostly it was her kids, Michael and Bobby. Oh, and Buck, of course. It was because that kid was always getting into trouble, and because despite what Bobby said, Buck was his son. He was his son even while he was suing Bobby and the man was mad at him.
So, when the East Hollywood police were contacted by Iron Man’s associate to be an escort and given the license plate of Buck’s Jeep (which he’d just gotten back from the body shop), Athena had found out about it twenty minutes later. Naturally, she told Bobby, who was off shift and both of them raced over toward Kaiser Permanente regardless that they couldn’t contact Buck due to the lawsuit.
They were horrified when they found that area around the hospital parking lot cordoned off by police. Athena got off to try to find out something, telling Bobby to circle around and she’d call him when she knew something. She was able to pass through the police line easily enough, and even if she wanted to go immediately to the hospital and find out about Buck, something drew her to the scene.
There were several vehicles that had been on fire, which meant the another fire station, mainly station 6, were on the scene. There was a lot of destruction, like a bomb had gone off, and as she walked closer to the scene to try and see what was happening, she stepped on something.
The woman frowned and bent down to pick it up, seeing it was a California license plate, covered in soot and half burned. She wiped at the numbers, the curiosity getting the better of her. The moment she did, the sob felt like it was punched out of her.
It was Buck’s license plate.-

I’m With You (15/?)
Summary:
Having a crush was nothing to be ashamed of…lying to the family and friends of said crush about being the guy’s boyfriend, that was a whole other problem. Based on the 1995 movie While You Were Sleeping.

Notes: This chapter was originally over 6k long, so during editing when I found a particularly good stopping point I decided to cut it into two. That also meant that i could post this today and not once I finish editing the rest of what used to be this chapter. So, here we are. Enjoy.

The first person to call Buck’s new phone was Hen and he agreed to meet with her for coffee after he left the hospital because she insisted that they go and because Chimney had overheard the conversation on her end, he invited himself too. For good measure, Buck had gone ahead and invited Josh along.
“I just wanted to see how you were doing,” Hen said. “Christopher getting hurt on your watch must have felt horrible.”
“It did,” Buck admitted. And it was still bothering him a little. He knew logically it wasn’t his fault, but Christopher had been crying and whimpering in pain and Buck should have been able to protect him from it. Seeing him and how well he was handling his healing wrist had made Buck feel a little better.
“What happened?” Josh asked.
Buck explained with Hen piping in.
“It was just a sprained wrist,” Chimney said. “Very minor, right Hen?”
She nodded. “And things like that can happen at any time, especially with kids with CP. It’s really not your fault, Buck.”
“I know,” Buck said. Eddie didn’t even blame him for it. “It still sucked.”
Hen pat his hand on the table. “I know. I remember the first time Denny got hurt — I don’t know who was crying more, Denny or Karen.”
Chimney and Buck grinned at each other and Josh laughed. Some of the weight from what happened to Christopher fell away as Hen started asking Josh questions about dispatch and Josh had plenty of stories.
Eventually, the topic switched over to Andrew.
“I stopped by last night,” Josh said. “He’s getting discharged tomorrow, right?”
Buck nodded. He didn’t want to think about it too much. When Eddie had told him while they were visiting Andrew, Buck had tried not to show how panicked it made him to hear it. It was just that so far things had been a little strange. Andrew had to know Buck wasn’t his boyfriend...or if he didn’t know, he likely suspected something, and yet he wasn’t questioning anything and instead acting like Buck was his boyfriend. It was strange.
Josh met his eyes and there was a question there about what was happening that Buck couldn’t answer.
“That’s good, then,” Josh said. “He’ll be back to normal in no time.”
“Yeah,” Buck said. Everything would go back to normal. Including how much Buck didn’t belong.
“We should throw him a welcome party,” Hen said. “I don’t want to overstep, Buck, but it’d be nice to get everyone together to welcome him home. Think it’s alright to do at his place?”
Chim looked like he was having too much fun with that going by the way he wiggled his eyebrows at Buck. Josh coughed to hide his amusement and it was lucky that Hen didn’t realize what they were on about.
“Uh, that sounds like a good idea,” Buck said.
“Good, good,” Hen said and then she started to plan.
“She loves a good welcome back party,” Chimney explained. “In our line of work there’s always someone out for an injury. And I’m sure we’ll have another party when he gets back to work.”
Hen nodded with a small smile.
Buck was struck yet again by how much love there was among these people whose lives he’d shoved himself into. Something about it must have shown on his face because Josh nudged him.
“Okay?” he mouthed at him.
Buck nodded. Hen was talking about picking up a cake and Chimney was texting and presumably inviting anyone that should be at a welcome home party for Andrew.
“Eddie says he won’t be discharged until sometime tomorrow and he can stall bringing him to the house for a little while if we need him to,” Hen said. “Good thing we’re not on shift tomorrow.”
“And look at that, neither am I,” Josh said.
They looked to Buck. “Working early in the morning,” he said and it wasn’t something he could miss after the day of work that he’d already missed this week.
“And we have to clean up the place a bit?” Hen asked, looking at Buck.
“I did a bit of cleaning yesterday when I stopped by to feed Legolas but it’s still a bit of a mess after the earthquake.”
“Okay,” Hen said. “So we’ll have to get there early to set up.”
Buck nodded along and as all the details were ironed out, he tried to figure out if maybe this party might end up being the perfect time for him to come clean. They would all be there and he could explain the whole thing. And then when it was all over he could walk away and maybe things wouldn’t be that bad. If Buck mentally prepared himself for it, then it would be okay even if it hurt. It was definitely going to hurt.
Josh hung back after Hen and Chimney headed off. “So, what is going on? Like, the truth?”
“I have no idea. He doesn’t remember everything yet so I’m pretty sure he just thinks he’s forgotten me. The whole thing is messed up but I have to tell him, right? I can’t let him keep trying to remember me when he won’t be able to? I just haven’t been alone with him since that one day when he was pushing me to become a firefighter and I don’t even know what to make of that. I just — this is so weird.”
Josh pulled him into a hug. “Everything will be okay, Buck. Even if it blows up in your face. I’ll still be your friend.”
“Thanks,” Buck said and he meant it because he needed to know that he wouldn’t lose everyone.
“And I don’t think you’ll lose everyone either after it all comes out,” Josh said.
Buck didn’t agree, but he didn’t feel like arguing that point.
He and Josh parted ways and Buck headed towards his Jeep.
—-
Eddie went on his own to pick Andrew up from the hospital because everyone else including Abuela and Pepa were at Andrew’s house for the surprise welcome home party. When he arrived at the hospital room, Andrew hadn’t been discharged yet.
“Waiting on the doctor,” Andrew explained.
So Eddie sat down. “And how are you doing? Remembering more?”
“A bit,” Andrew said and then after a short moment, “quite a bit.”
“The dog? Buck?” Eddie asked at once and maybe he was a little too eager.
Andrew chuckled. “I don’t even like Lord of the Rings, Eddie. I have no idea whose dog that is.”
“I thought you liked the movies. Wait, you used to read the books when we were kids...and I remember a very long rant about The Hobbit movies”
Andrew just blinked at him. “I don’t remember everything,” he said with a shrug. “But, I remembered your ex. Christopher’s mother.”
“You don’t remember your own boyfriend, but you remember her,” Eddie said incredulously.
Andrew chuckled. “He’s great, though, isn’t he? Buck. I really like him. I haven’t gotten to spend too much time alone with him, but as far as I can tell he’s a pretty great guy and I wouldn’t be here without him, would I? I was actually trying to push him into joining the LAFD. I think it would be a great fit for him, wouldn’t you?”
Eddie nodded. “Yeah, I guess it would be.”
“And he’s nice to look at, isn’t he? Really well fit, I’ve been meaning to ask him about his workout routine. Everyone seems to like him. I kind of get it, I guess, even if I don’t remember. Mom and dad seem to like him more than your ex.”
It wasn’t surprising that Andrew liked Buck. Somewhere deep down, Andrew probably did remember how he felt about Buck — his attraction to Buck. And that made Eddie’s jaw clench a little and make him want to snap at Andrew. Mostly it also made Eddie a horrible person and a horrible brother. He had no claim on Buck. He had no right to be upset about the way that Andrew talked about Buck.
“Anyway, I don’t remember him, but what I know of him now I like. Did you know he lived in South America for a while? He didn’t say where but I think it’s so cool that he did his own thing and just went where he wanted to. I admire him for it.”
Eddie couldn’t remember if he’d known that about Buck or not.
“And considering the coffee he makes, I can only imagine how good he is at mixing drinks,” Andrew said and he looked thoughtful for a moment. “Also, I keep meaning to ask if that’s a scar on his eyebrow or something else. I can’t remember, obviously, but it suits him, don’t you think?”
Eddie tampered down the possessive monster inside of him that wanted nothing more than to stop Andrew from continuing to talk about Buck as if he actually knew him and as if he liked him or felt more for him even though of course Andrew felt that way about Buck. They were dating. Eddie was just...he was stupid enough to not have good control over his feelings.
“It’s a birthmark, I think,” Eddie said and tried to be nonchalant.
“Must be why it fits him so well,” Andrew said with a decisive nod.
Eddie wanted the doctor to get there and discharge Andrew already. He checked his phone. Hen was giving him the okay to bring Andrew home. Eddie couldn’t help but wonder if Buck would stick around at Andrew’s place, if he was looking forward to having him out of the hospital. Eddie had to push those thoughts away.
“Have you spoken to mom and dad?” Eddie asked, making the effort to change the subject.
“Yes,” Andrew said. “Got my phone charged so I got caught up on a few things and called them. She’s been texting me practically every hour.”
“That’s mom,” Eddie said. “She worries.”
“Yeah, I got that.”
It was another twenty minutes before a doctor finally appeared with the discharge papers and instructions to do with the headaches that Andrew was still having. He had some meds to take for the pain, but he was essentially in good health other than the memory loss.
“Finally,” Andrew said when they were out of the hospital and walking to Eddie’s car.
Weirdly as much as Eddie was glad that his brother was finally out of the hospital and okay, he also hated him a little. Eddie was cognizant of himself enough to realize that at least some of that was to do with Buck and the feelings that sat on his chest and didn’t seem keen on leaving.
“I remember your car,” Andrew said somewhat cheerily. “And I drive—” he took a moment to think about it.
The same moment in which Eddie had to wonder about why none of them had thought to think of Andrew’s car. Eddie should have been the one to think about that and maybe he would have if the hospital had given him Andrew’s things. And actually, come to think of it, Buck hadn’t given them Andrew’s keys even though he was probably the one that had them.
“I drive a Jeep,” Andrew said.
Until Andrew said it, Eddie hadn’t even thought about how Buck and Andrew drove the same type of car. Maybe it was yet another thing that had bonded them. Seeing all those connections, the way that Andrew didn’t remember Buck but already seemed entirely fond of him, it made him want to scream.
“You do,” Eddie said but refrained from telling him that his car had probably been towed in the unlikely event that it wasn’t still wherever Andrew had parked it.
—-
So maybe Andrew was messing with Eddie a little. It was just that Andrew wanted to know for sure if what he’d seen on Eddie the other day was more than admiration for Buck but something deeper. And from the way that Eddie seemed to be both a bit quieter and a bit stiff that he was in his head about something. Likely Buck.
It was interesting. A bit ironic in a way, too, and Andrew had figured out how he was going to punish Buck for what he’d done. If it messed with his brother a bit too, well, that was just a nice side effect.
The drive over to his house was a little familiar and then when Eddie parked, he knew which house was his. Slowly things filled themselves into his head. It was weird the way that things would just fit into place and he knew them. Maybe, it was going to be the same once he saw the dog. Legolas. His phone had given him next to no information about the dog. Andrew didn’t even have pictures of him.
“Familiar?” Eddie asked.
“Yeah,” Andrew said. “It’s home.”
As the words left his mouth, though, they didn’t feel true and Andrew didn’t know what to make of that because this was his home.
“My car isn’t here,” Andrew said when he paused at the bottom of the steps.
Eddie grimaced. “About that,” he said. “We, um, we forgot about it.”
“You forgot about it,” Andrew said.
“Look, I will take care of everything. I think Pepa assumed Buck would have done it but we were all a bit distracted with you in a coma and everything. But I’ll figure all of that out tomorrow.”
Andrew couldn’t even really be mad. It was the whole Buck problem rearing its head again.
They walked up the steps and Andrew noticed that there were a few cracks on the concrete that he knew hadn’t been there before. And when Eddie opened the door, it didn’t glide in like usual. Andrew barely had time to focus on that though because the last thing Andrew expected was to step inside and have everyone yell “Surprise!”
—-
Christopher still had a bandage around his wrist and it was a reminder to Buck of what he’d allowed to happen even if no one else blamed him for it. Not even Christopher who had hugged Buck when he first arrived at Andrew’s house with Isabel and Pepa and then followed him around and tried to help him with whatever Buck was doing.
Isabel had recently been in the hospital too after a bad fall, but she was doing fine and she’d only gone because she hadn’t been able to get up on her own and she thought she might have injured her hip but she’d had her phone close by and managed a call to 9-1-1. Mostly, Pepa was keeping her seated and comfortable because the fall had left her bruised up. It made Buck hesitate on wanting to tell everyone the truth, but then again most things made him rethink it and too much time had passed. Buck needed to tell them.
“You look like you’re worrying about something,” Josh said.
“I’m telling them,” Buck said. “Today.”
Josh raised an eyebrow at him and pat his shoulder. “Things have been going so well lately, do you really want to just blow that up?”
“Andrew is going to remember everything any day now. Him coming home is just going to make that process even faster and then what?”
Josh sighed. “Look, there’s things you don’t—”
“Josh, I can’t keep lying,” Buck said. “It’s too...it’s different now that he’s awake. This has gone on way too long.”
“Yeah, I get that, but maybe wait a little longer or I don’t know, have you considered talking to Andrew and explaining.”
The idea of talking to Andrew about it first had merit, but Buck just didn’t know if would be possible for Buck to do it during a party that meant that Andrew would likely be surrounded by people all the time.
“Maybe,” Buck said.
Hen was the one to get the text that Eddie and Andrew were on their way from the hospital which meant that the last minute details had to be worked out.
“Is she like this at every party?” Buck asked.
Athena chuckled. “Surprise parties, yes. Easier to go along with whatever she wants though.”
Karen nodded in agreement. Buck took it in, the way that Athena smiled and the way that Karen nodded even while he eyes shone with pride and love for her wife. He was going to miss them. He was going to miss all of them.
Legolas started barking when they heard Eddie and Andrew outside and Buck had to wonder if that was because the dog knew that his owner was home. When Eddie opened the door, everyone shouted “surprise!” and Andrew looked taken aback.
“Seriously?” Andrew asked through a laugh.
“We had to,” Hen said and she was the first one to rush over and hug him.
Buck’s attention was on Legolas who did rush over but only sniffed at Andrew before jumping at Eddie who pet his head lightly before Legolas turned back to Andrew. It was curious. Legolas had been more excited to see Christopher when he first got to the house and if Buck was allowed to think it, the dog had been more excited to see him. But Andrew was his owner...his person and the dog was treating him just like anyone else.
Eddie had said it a lot though, Andrew didn’t like dogs. Maybe Legolas could sense that. The whole it was getting more and more confusing. If Buck didn’t know any better that dog had insinuated himself into Andrew’s life just like Buck had.
Andrew hugged Pepa and walked over to the couch to hug Isabel and then his eyes found Buck. Buck didn’t know what to do. Did he rush over and hug him or did he wait to see what Andrew would do. He decided to leave it up to Andrew.
“Hey,” Andrew said.
Buck felt like everyone was watching them. Tentatively, Buck moved towards Andrew. He smiled and went in for a quick hug, the kind that was awkward and unsure because Buck had no idea how familiar he was allowed to be. Andrew leaned into the hug, but he didn’t linger, pulling back and ending the hug quick as it had begun.
“Really?” Hen asked.
“What?” Buck said.
“That hug was pathetic,” Hen said with a roll of her eyes. “It’s no wonder he doesn’t remember you if you can’t even hug him properly. Your boyfriend is home, Buck, you should be kissing him...I bet you haven’t even done that and he’s been awake for a while now.” There was judgement in her eyes at least instead of suspicion.
Buck felt his cheeks go warm. He didn’t know what to say and over Andrew’s shoulder he met Chim’s eyes who looked like he found the whole thing hilarious and couldn’t wait to poke fun at the situation. No one else stepped forward to welcome Andrew home.
“Uh, not doing that in front of all his family,” Buck said in a low tone.
His eyes met Andrew’s and because they were still standing close enough, it didn’t take Andrew any effort at all to take Buck’s hand and pull him even closer.
“What—”
Andrew made a show of rolling his eyes, he was smirking too in a strangely knowing way, the twists of his lips making it seem like he was accepting a challenge and then he drew Buck even closer and he kissed him.
It was chaste, more of a peck than anything else and it lasted seconds and afterwards Andrew laughed and he threw an arm around Buck’s shoulders. Buck felt lost, like he had no idea what had just happened or why. The next few moments were a blur of standing close to Andrew who’s lips had felt fluffy and soft even while chapped, and who was still undeniably hot even after just getting out of the hospital. Kissing him was no hardship and a part of Buck — the part that still had a bit of a crush — wanted the kiss to last longer than it did. The trance was broken only once Andrew let him go and stepped back and then he was gone.
