Somatic resources for healing trauma and PTSD
Tumblr media
I decided to bring together a range of links and online resources in one place to make it easier for people to find their own path to healing. I’ve noticed that certain personality types, especially Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) seem to be more susceptible to trauma. I hope that these tools will help you get started on your healing journey.
Where to start:
EFT Tapping* - Learn it for free here: What is tapping and how can I start using it?
Butterfly hug exercise: The Butterfly Hug (EMDR Self-Help)
5 Step holding exercise: 5 Step Holding Exercise for Regulation of PTSD symptoms
Somatic experiencing exercises: Two Simple Techniques that can Help Trauma Patients Feel Safe with Peter Levine
Voo Technique: Reduce Stress - 2 Minute Voo Technique by Katie Brauer
Felt Sense Exercise: Peter Levine's Felt Sense Exercise at The Art of Healing Trauma
For more in-depth online help:
The Healing Trauma Online Video Course by Peter Levine (Sounds True)
Roland Bal: Resolving Trauma and PTSD
Organic Intelligence
Books:
Reclaiming Your Body by Suzanne Scurlock
Healing Trauma: A Pioneering Program for Restoring the Wisdom of the Body by Peter Levine (book and CD)
Complex PTSD: A Guide from Surviving to Thriving by Pete Walker
The Tapping Solution: A Revolutionary System for Stress-Free Living by Nick Ortner
* Please note that it’s best to use EFT for emotions and thoughts in the present moment, or any memories that come up spontaneously. Intentionally going back to traumatic memories and using EFT on them can be too triggering for many people (putting them into a hyper-aroused state, and possibly leading to dissociation), and if you have PTSD/C-PTSD is not advisable without the guidance of a trauma-informed therapist. This can also trigger symptoms for people with chronic health conditions.

#5 What is Somatic Based Therapy?
CBT is well renowned for its talking, and easily accessible techniques. However, it is also unfortunately known as being ineffective for treating more complex psychiatric disorders. Henceforth, Somatic Therapy became another form of care for those afflicted with their series of unfortunate events. Somatic therapy includes talk therapy, but also concentrates on other methods of working through emotions and events (so is effective for PTSD), for example via the movement of your eyes you can limit flashbacks that could potentially cause a relapse and otherwise considerable emotional distress. It "incorporates body-oriented modalities such as dance, breathwork, and meditation to support mental healing".
Unlike standard mental health therapy, such as CBT which focuses predominantly on the mind," somatic therapy incorporates body-oriented modalities such as dance, breathwork, and meditation to support mental healing. In addition, somatic experiencing therapy sessions include talk therapy and mind-body exercises.
Beyond the standard somatic therapy, numerous subgroups use its framework in specific ways. These include:
Sensorimotor psychotherapy 1:
A comprehensive therapy that uses the body as both a source of information and intervention targets.
The Hakomi Method 2:
Psychotherapy that integrates scientific, psychological, and spiritual sources, focusing on four core concepts: gentleness, nonviolence, compassion, and mindfulness.
Bioenergetic analysis 3:
Body-psychotherapy that combines bodily, analytic, and relational work based on understanding energy.
Biodynamic psychotherapy 4:
A combination of allopathic (medical) and holistic therapy modalities that include physical massage by the practitioner
Brainspotting:
In addition to mind and bodywork, this therapy incorporates eye positioning to retrain emotional reactions.
Those on the ASP tend to benefit from Somatic as I believe many hold forms of trauma similar to PTSD and can allow for those with alexithymia to bring awareness to the ways their body responds to their environment and experiences.

I love taking belly dancing classes with Sofiahishtardance! Her zeal and passion for dance is so infectious! 💖😍
This belly dancing experience has given me space to somatically release heavy trapped emotions, open up my feminine side, embrace my feminine goddess energy, unblock my closed off chakras, and even start to clear past generational karmic lessons. I feel it helping me build confidence in all areas of my life. ✨
Belly dancing embraces individuality and creativity, and allows one to feel the movements through the connection to the music, becoming one with it. 💃🏻
Regardless of the negative emotional or physical state I'm in, when I leave the studio I always feel lighter and brighter, emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. That's the power of dance. 🔥

Individualistic approaches to trauma and mental health that don’t consider the systems that affect us, are only acting as a band aid in a wound that keeps getting bigger and deeper.
The systems that hold societies together, and that have shaped our past, present and will shape our future, are at the core of all traumas. But, as you know, the individual shapes the collective as much as the collective shapes the individual. We are not just shaped by these systems, we become the systems and continue carrying the same dynamics as long as we don’t address them in our body first.
We can’t bypass our individual effect on the whole, as much as we can’t bypass the effects of the whole in our individual experience.
That’s why we do trauma work in the body, because trauma, ours, our ancestral and also the collective, lives in our body now, not in the memories of the past. There is no past other than our body in this moment to moment present experience.
The good news is that our body contains all the answers and healing medicine we have been longing for.

My experience with Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy and further thoughts on healing trauma
Tumblr media
I’ve been reflecting recently on the difference between dealing with more acute PTSD and more long term trauma, as it seems to me that often they are quite different. Of course, there can be some overlap.
In my experience, traumatic memories from childhood sometimes stayed in hibernation, till much later in life when they sprung into my consciousness in a visceral, overwhelming flashback. It’s not that I had forgotten the specific event or completely blocked it out. I could consciously recall it and talk about it previously (and often had done so with various therapists/bodyworkers) - it’s just that it didn’t have the intense traumatic emotions attached, until my bodymind was ready to feel it fully.
Actually, sometimes I didn’t feel ready at all, but I guess on some level I must have been - or it would not have come to the surface.
My experience so far has been that deep bodywork and somatic therapy seems to be very good for dealing with long-held grief and trauma. In some cases it is not just grief and trauma from our own lives, but those of previous generations. Some reputable modalities in this field include somatic experiencing, hakomi, somatic practice, sensorimotor psychotherapy, deep brain reorienting, and more.
However, my experience was also that when I experienced acute trauma flashbacks, sometimes I needed other tools. I found EFT tapping one of the most powerful, especially as I could easily use it on my own and with good friends. I liked that it felt so empowering, and I didn’t always need to do it with a therapist or practitioner. I know many also benefit from EMDR and brainspotting, though I have less experience with them.
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy has been one of the most life changing modalities for me, as it taught me for the first time what true embodiment really felt like. I feel like it was really foundational for me, before I was able to successfully engage in other modalities and therapies.
Up until that point I had tried various techniques, but I didn’t really “get it” fully. My BCST practitioner was able to tune into me so well that she knew when I was connected to certain parts of my body, and when I was not. She knew when to push me to tune in more deeply - especially to my gut area, as I didn’t even realise I was that disconnected from it.
She challenged me to deeper and deeper levels of embodiment and connectedness that I never knew was possible. At times it was incredibly blissful too, like lying in a pool of water, or resting in a womb. It is rare to experience such a deeply embodied, wholistic sense of bliss, so it was remarkable and profound.
My BCST practitioner also challenged me to be present with my pain. Not just emotional pain, mind you, but actual physical pain coursing through my body. At times it was very, very hard to stay with it, but I’m glad I did. I noticed during my sessions, I would often have random, past spontaneous memories pop into mind. Frequently they were not even bad or dramatic memories. Just random events or places I hadn’t thought about in months or even years.
Another thing I noticed was that sometimes after the sessions, I would have intensely emotional trauma-fuelled nightmares. I didn’t know how to handle these at first, as sometimes they happened more than one night in a row. I decided to use EFT tapping, and tap on them as if the dreams were a real memory. I treated them like a trauma flashback, even if they were not actual events, but rather a conglomeration of past events and feelings. This worked very well, and once I figured this out, the dreams would stop and I felt better.
It seems to me that in order to fully heal and resolve our trauma, we need a number of different tools and modalities to work with. There are so many different layers and dimensions of consciousness, that I don’t think it can be encompassed in any one tool or technique or modality. No one has all the answers! We also have unique minds and bodies, so what works well for one, may not for another.
I often found that what worked well at one stage of my journey did not work so well at a later stage, and vice versa. This can take a great deal of patience and experimentation, as well as learning to tune into your gut and intuition. It really is the journey of a lifetime, and we never really finish or “arrive”. I do feel like I’ve reached a point where I am more healed than broken overall, yet I know there is always something new to learn.
