Calm before the storm pt 2
I'm back again with more SPAU
I have made more soft leviathan and Shadoc cause I need to balance out all the angst
this one needs no warnings other then fluff and comfort feels
He sighed at the bland bricks around the room, he may be a master trap builder but his decorative skills were very weak.  There were a few weapons and chargers he had stolen from Doc and a few sheets of music that Solo had given him and Clamour and a painting of a creeper peeking over a dune.  Shadoc never said anything about it though so he must have done something right or so horribly wrong.
‘Where is Shadoc?’ He sat up where he was and thought for a moment.  Shadoc and him had parted ways in hermanville but it was more of him just leaving the underdeveloped monument to a place he never knew.  Shadoc told him all about places on the old server and how the old hermitville had houses reaching to the sky and a plant similar to the one there now, he said the other plant was way bigger and cooler though…  Back on track! Whenever he and Shad hung out he would always leave first while his mirror would just continue to sit there as if for the end of time. Thinking on it he didn’t actually know where Shadoc stayed.  Puzzler made his infernal home in a sprawling city that seemed to rise from the ground from nowhere with one entrance and an expansive maze built to confuse. Tripwire and Red stayed with him, he was starting to suspect they were his lackeys.  Joyfull stayed with joe in small camps. Nobody could miss the volcano the hoarders had made in a day and filled with riches. Clamour lived on a cliff and solo made camps near every residence of more than one shadow.
But he has no clue where to find his… Brother, for all intents and purposes he had no way to find him if something went wrong.  With that goth disaster threatening people for loyalty he should really find out where he stayed. Since he never spoke about it he should probably ask him next time he sees him.
“Freedom la la la la freedom follow me, Freedom la la la la freedom follow me. Cut it!”
He hummed and air guitared as he walked along the gravel streets of spawn,  It had a very open feeling with a few stater homes scattered with a few humble shops.  The shopping district was in the distance with a lot more buildings and foot traffic. He and his brother in origin decided to meet up and head to day care.  He wasn't fond of daycare at first, it seemed childish with all the blankets and shadows choosing to sleep.
Another reason he was so stunned when shadoc brought a shadow with a pair of chords and one with a guitar, Clamour and Solo.  Solo had played don’t mine at night somehow and he couldn't help but run up with him and join cause how could he not? Its a bop.  Clamour proved his mettle with one hell of a chorus.
They were good friends of his now and he actually enjoyed spending time at the daycare with Shadoc and them now.  The other hated when Clamour was there but they wouldn't have to worry about this time. It was just him and Shad, he needed to ask about his base.
“Heya my clumsy companion.” He swung himself into a curtsy when he created his opposite.
“SHArk- ha hey Levia-nathan” Shadoc looked at him with mirth while he pushed himself off the side of the light shop
“Levia-tha-niel Levia-nathan what's next a Levi-O-Sa joke?  Im wounded”
“A what?” Shadoc and I walked down towards a dock that lead to a very small rock and wooden castle with ice creeping up the sides.  His mirror always looked at it kinda funny like he had deja vu. He didn't bother to ask he had other questions.
“Hey,  Where is your base? I know where most of the season 7 shadows live but i’ve known you  better then even all of them and i have no idea where to find you other then running into you?”
He watched for a reaction from the corner of his eye as he clinked down the dock, he did not see the response he was hoping for.  No realisation, embarrassment, or goofy smile. Justa deer in the headlights expression that made him want to keel over or shred whatever put such a vulnerable look on his face.  But that would be him.
“Uuuuuhhhhhhm hmmm,  I-I live s-somewhere?...”
He stops and flips on him and steps in front of him.  This is no longer a conversation for daycare. Shadoc stumbles to a stop and his scarred arms twitch as he shifts backwards on one leg and holds his arms slightly in front of himself… He has to be careful about this, or he’ll run.  He straightened himself out from his hunch so he looks less predatory and relaxes where he stands across from his mirror.
“Thats bull-shit and we both knew it the moment you said it.”  He was worried now… Did.. did he not make a place? Why wouldn't he?
“...”
“Shadoc…  It’s alright if you don't want to tell me why but at least tell me you have a place? Even for a shadow not having a safe place can be very risky… Your not normally risky.”
“I- I stay with solo sometimes? O-or joe or cleo”
“Solo lives in a tent.. That works for him because he stay near everyone's bases and joe is constantly exploring and camping out in shacks.. Cloe lives on a goddamn boat!  Have you never thought to make your own place for you?’
“I tried once.  It didn't go well… I'm no good at building and jigsaw had it out for me at the time.  I haven't tried since” Shadoc had calmed down after he saw the worry on his face and realised there was no hostility.
“Rain check.  No daycare today we have a place to build”
Leaves and vines draped down from rock and moss,  a giant maw of a great beast stood forever preserved in stone.  Two black wisps skirted around it from all sides to rise and leave material only to slip away again.  Piles of lanterns, fences and item frames laid around and sun bounced off the latches of chests and water steaming through the dense woods.
A leaf drifted down onto the stone reptile and a shadow slunk up and brushed it away while setting a lantern into the socket of the skull where a wooden floor could be seen held up like rafters.  The other wisp seems sluggish and tired. Like he was missing something.
Leviathan had swept past and asked clamour what would go good with a giant homey stone skull.  He had pointed him in the direction of an older shadows house. Russy he thinks he was called? He looked at how the house was built before getting an idea and racing 2d all the way to his base to get material and go back to where Shadoc was clearing space.
The two of them had spent days isolated in the jungle building a skeleton of some sort of dragon and filling it with wooden floors a fireplace coming out one eye and a bedroom full of comfy stuff and carpets in the other eye while down the ribs there was room for storage and a small open bungalow with shelves and beds under one wing that was full of parrots and cats they had tamed while building.  Shadoc liked them and he thought the cats were awesome.
“Thanks…  I don't think I ever would have done this at all on my own.”
He smiled for next to him was a sun
“Of course, I haven't built anything like this before but it feels right.  I care about you too much to let you wander the world with no place to come back to.  No home. Ya know?’
“Yeah.  I've had a home for a long time though.  It just moves and sings obnoxiously a lot. Ya know?’ his mirror smiles brightly with a yawn of a sleepless creature.
...
Another cliff hanger for today. I'll make more soon again and I'll post art of Shadocs new base soon!!

Research: game characters and 2D platformers…
For today’s lesson we are to look into characters from a whole host of media and find those we like and are to also look primarily at platfrormers of the 2D variety. In this post/s I will look at some inspiration that I have had for my project that I am to now refer to as “The Cult of Grosse.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first game I’m going to look at is Hollow Knight, a favourite to many players. It’s a 2D metroidvania, set in a world full of bugs where you, after stumbling across it, must help its inhabitants by killing a slew of enemies and taking the place of their long corrupted protector, at lest that is one of a few endings. The style is very noticeable in a crowd, with its more simple yet expressive characters, a small rim of black allows the characters to stand out against the expertly drawn back rounds. Near all enemies look distinct from one another, the only exception being civilian bugs who have been infected, who do get slightly repetitive, but only slightly. All the bosses feel memorable with unique moves and style, with some having a full area related to them making the fight feel more impactful. When looking at the characters you can feel that their smaller and more simple designed let Team Cherry make their animation better and quicker, allowing theme more ease what could be used in other areas such as cleaning rougher edges of other mechanics. When playing the game you don’t even think about how some areas are less than original, such as the gardens and green path, rather, your drawn into it’s almost mythical, dark world and don’t bat an eye, it is truly magical to look at. I would be inspired by the games simple character look and try and replicate its simplicity, however, while they were able to use more mixers to make their characters look smoother and cleaner, and with my games 64:64 pixel limit it would be hard to make them fit so well together like they accomplished, cans in all, they are better artists than me. And while the game is not heavily based on platforming in general, it dose have a few moments some would call platforming such as the movement upgrades that allow you to traverse better, some small puzzles found throughout such as a few found in Deep Nest and, of course, the memorable kings palace full of buzz saws, because why not? These test your movement capabilities and and sees if you have the skill, or patients, to survive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another game that I love as much (or even more) is Enter the Gungeon, the bird eyes view rouge like. This game is more fitting with its style, that being pixel based, but less with actual platforming. The only platforming your going to see is barrel rolling over pits unless you count escaping gunfire as the game is also a bullet hell full of pain and suffering. The game’s simple style allows the characters to look cartoon, fun and cute while also allowing them to look threatening, this also allows their bullets to be noticeable to the player with their simple round look and red texture, (some don’t abide to this but it is extremely common.) the characters are almost comparable to bobble heads but with actual soul and character, with portraits showing more detail allowing you to get a better look at them and see their personality, also their normal outfits tell you a lot about them even though the host of characters do look out of place together, however this odd group of characters actually leads into the story of the game, what is a joke yet climatic. The pilot exudes a personal charisma, similar to Han Solo what is understandable with the two being space pilots, even his items complement this such as getting discounts at stores for being hot. The convict, fittingly, is a criminal with her orange jumpsuit and her angered domineer. The hunter comes with a dog and has 2 starting guns, one bing a crossbow showing that she has business to attend to. Then there’s the soldier, wearing futuristic armour from the future and has an ability to call ammo. These character designs allow the player to quickly analyse their situation and know what they are getting into before even getting to the end of the game what tells you the characters reason for being here, that is to rewrite a mistake they made in the past by fittingly shootings themselves in the face. Amazing. Because of this I’m going to try adding more defining parts to Agent Cole Gates (the main character) such as a colour twirl to make him stand out, however he already has the smithy shades.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kirby, perfect old Kirby, one of the most simple, bland and uninteresting characters named after a lawyer. Even in his own games he’s know as simple, one even shows you how to make a Kirby step by step. However, Kirby is a beloved icon of gaming, many not on the plinth of characters like Mario, link and others like Kratos and master chief, but pretty high. That most likely comes from his simplicity and likability, he’s pink, lazy and likes food, what is there not to love? Lots of Kirby enemies and friends are similar to him, they are balls, balls with a defining feature like a mouth, eye, fire, spike, so on so on. This shows that almost lazy designs can be good if you make them well with an effort for cuteness, at lest till the end where Kirby games lose themselves. Because of this I should try and make my characters more human so people can relate to them like so many do to Kirby and his personality, also I shouldn’t make them too creepy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While this isn’t a game, rather a piece of music, I believe it should be talked about due to how it inspired me. The song Cabinet Man by Lemon Demon, a.k.a Niel Cicirega, tells the story of a now deceased person who have shoved their organs into an arcade cabinet and are living as a game. This is an odd song strongly based on polybius, the secret government game made ages ago and became a conspiracy by the people. Niel uses this to tell a story of grief and sadness what blossoms to a live and satisfaction what rots away and replaced with greed, anger and fear as he is to be replaced by home gaming systems. This song follows the tale of a villain, of a character who goes too far and starts abusing the power they have been given, but even at the end where he is beaten he doesn’t die, the song ending on a unknown end, with them presumably killing the robbers and continuing on with their murderous rampage. I’m a big lemon demon fan, and when hearing this song play when thinking of the idea for my game, it hit me like a cement truck, I had the perfect backdrop for my game.

Niel’s Interview With GQ Korea

“Fed up with being young” — NIEL
Whether he’s the young guy who says “don’t wear perfume,” or the man who says “don’t make me cry,” Niel always sings with Niel’s voice.
Tumblr media
Even though 5 years have gone by, it seems like it’s only been a few months. We met for the November issue of 2011, right?
Yes. When I was still a minor.
Do you remember what it was like to be 17 years old?
I think I was really oblivious. I just did everything my company told me to, no questions asked. All I can really remember is having a hard time…
What was hard about it?
Mostly, when I first started this line of work, I wasn’t able to sleep. Also, there was so much practicing. When I think about it now, those are the things I remember most clearly.
Could you do it again?
I don’t think I could live like that now, but sometimes I think I’d like to do it all over again.
Even though a lot of time has gone by since you debuted, you’re still pretty young, right? This year you’re only 24.
Lately, when I go to broadcast stations for my solo activities, it seems like I’ve been in the business longer than anyone else there. It feels really weird, y’know? Everyone greets me with all this respect, because I’ve been an idol for longer than they have, but they’re all older than me. It makes me think, “When did I get so old?”
Do idols still come to each other’s backstage rooms to greet each other?
Not nearly as often as when we debuted. I don’t really care though, whether they’re newer than me or not, I go and greet people…
How does it feel to do a photo shoot without the rest of Teen Top?
It’s nice that it finishes earlier, but it’s really boring. I like it better when I have people to laugh and joke around with, that way I don’t even feel the time passing.
You guys don’t even live together now, right?
After living together for almost 6 years, we all live separately now. I live with a friend who does music, and the others all live by themselves.
After living in a dorm for such a long time, you finally have your own place. What’s that like?
I mean, it’s great. I like having my own space. Honestly though, living in a dorm was really fun at first. But after a while, we kind of stopped talking to each other. It got to the point where we’d use our phones to say things like, “Wanna get some food?” — even if we were right next to each other. But, now that we don’t live together anymore, we see each other outside, and it’s really nice. We hang out a lot more often, too.
Last time, you said, “I think it’ll be a little weird if my voice is still sweet like this when I get older. I want my voice to be more like C.A.P’s.” In your new EP “LOVE AFFAIR...,” your voice sounds kind of scratchy. That sort of rough singing style stands out, but is it what you were going for?
I love that style of singing. In the past, I was really young, so I always went along with any suggestion my company gave me. Now that I’ve got more experience, I want to really express myself with my music. I researched a lot of singing techniques to make my voice sound more expressive.
When singing, what percent of your focus is on vocal texture? About 70 percent?
It can be really important, particularly with a vocal texture like mine. As soon as you hear my voice, you know it’s me. Regardless of that, in this EP I put effort into making my voice sound different for each song.
Tumblr media
How is this experience different from when you promote with Teen Top?
When I’m working with Teen Top, we need to consider the expectations of the public and our style as a team. When I’m working as a solo artist, I really get to focus on my own expectations and my own style.
Is it alright if you don’t place as high on the charts during your solo activities?
Completely. I think of myself as a rookie. When you’re a rookie, you don’t worry about the charts.
Turning 24 is something of a milestone. It’s the age when you do things like coming back from the military or graduating university, and you become a full-fledged member of society. Do you think about that sort of thing?
For my friends that are the same age as me, this year is definitely a milestone. But compared them, I became a working professional a lot earlier. So, it kind of feels like… I beat them to it? Ah, it sort of feels like I forced my way ahead of them. I wanted so badly to turn 20, but, now that I’m actually in my 20’s, it feels like every year goes by way too fast. It’s a little scary, and it makes me feel anxious.
When you were that age, did you want to fall passionately in love too?
I still don’t think I need to fall passionately in love.
Have you?
I’ve been in love before, of course. I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t. But, I don’t think I’ve ever really been passionately in love before.
When did you feel like you’d become an adult? You can say that it hasn’t happened yet.
When I meet with friends that are the same age as me, it can be hard to have a real conversation with them. Is that an answer? That kind of thing happens sometimes. I think I must be a little stubborn. When my friends say things like “it doesn’t matter what you do,” or “it’ll be fine if you do that,” I’m apprehensive. I think, “I have more life experience, and I don’t think that’s a good idea….”
Are you straightforward about it?
I could go either way. It really depends on the situation.
In your position, you’re probably pretty cautious.
Yes. If I make one mistake, people might say things like, “Wow, he’s so arrogant.” Somehow, my friends from school are really jealous of me. It’s hard to get a job right now, you know. On the other hand, there are a lot of times when I’m the one who’s jealous of them.
Do you think of being a singer as a lifelong job?
Yes. A lifelong job. I’ll continue singing, but later I’d like to try writing and producing music for other singers, too.
How is that different from using your singing as a stepping stone to becoming a producer or businessman?
I prefer to be the one singing the songs that I write. With producing too, rather than giving my song to another musician, I’d prefer to work together with them instead. Since my song are written with my own thoughts and my own emotions, isn’t it better if I’m the one who sings them?
But isn’t it more common to sing songs written by someone else?
I haven’t been writing my own music for very long, but it’s a completely different experience. There are limitations when a songwriter is explaining their vision to me. There are times when I don’t even understand what they’re trying to say. Of course, in those cases I try to consult with them about it. Anyway, since I know my own songs inside and out, even if something doesn’t come out right, if it feels good I can just go with it.
Tumblr media
You’ve released your second solo EP in the 8th year since your debut. In the studio, are you able to make your own decisions now?
No. I do exactly what the songwriters want me to do — since it’s their vision. Sometimes I’ll try singing the song a different way, but only as a suggestion. If they don’t like it, I give up pretty much right away.
Is that how it is even with the title track?
Yes, I had to re-record “Love Affair” like four times. The songwriters and producers need to like how it comes out, and I think it’s a really hard song for me to sing.
How would you feel if someone called you an R&B singer? Your second solo EP in particular has an R&B feel.
I’d be grateful, of course. Just hearing that makes me really happy.
In the press release, “Call Me” is described as “using Motown style for inspiration,” and “In The Rain” and “Disappear” are described as “Neo-Soul,” right?
That’s all fine, but I want to try lot’s of different styles: R&B, pop, and dance music, too. But, for now, if people are saying I can do R&B well after listening to this album, I consider that a success. “Niel is cool when he sings and dances at the same time,” — that’s also something I like to hear.
Are you already thinking about your next release?
I’m preparing a “breakup” series. I think my next song will be a breakup song too.
Why, did you breakup?
No. After settling on this concept, it felt like the title track had to be a breakup song. I’ll be making around two more releases this year, and they’re all break up songs, so… The recording is already finished.
How does it feel when you sing breakup songs?
Uh… Honestly, since I’m dancing and singing at the same time, breakup songs are easier. Because, it’s really difficult to smile and dance at the same time. So instead, I can just have a pained expression on my face, and it matches the song.
So, you’re able to freely express the pain of dancing?
People watching think I look like this because I’m singing about a breakup, and it makes them interested. This way, it’s a good thing.
Are you getting fed up with being called young?
Yes, especially in reference to Teen Top as a group. We’ve all gotten a little fed up with it. Since we debuted so young, people still think of us that way. When I tell people how old I actually am, they’re always surprised. They can’t believe how old I am. I wish people would remember how long we’ve been active and think about how old we must be now compared to when we debuted. In an effort to outgrow that “young boys” image, we’ve been allowed to change our concept a bit in our more recent albums. That really started with our song “Missing.”
Out of Teen Top’s members, you’ve changed the least.
I’ve barely changed at all.
You’ve never had your hair cut short, right?
Yeah, I thought about cutting it short once, but my fans were adamantly opposed, so…
You asked your fans first?
Yes. When I did, they all said to only cut it short enough so they could see my eyes. Honestly, when these promotions end, I have a hairstyle I want to try. It’s super short. I’ll have to talk to my company about it first, though. Sometimes, I think about just shaving it all…
You want to shave it all off?
I mean, not like that. Just, a style that’d feel really short to me? Get rid of the sides and the back. I saw some foreign model with a style like that, and it looked really cool. I want it cut like that.
Tumblr media
Your voice dropped a while ago, right? However, as an idol group member, or even just as a singer, sometimes it seems like you’re only just reaching maturity.
That was especially true while I was making this album. There were a lot of times where I felt like I had no idea what I was doing. In the past, it was like, since the album was coming out, there was just a list of things I had to do. But this time it started with, “So, what should we do?”
As you continue to work hard, don’t you gain more confidence?
I guess, but when I’m working with Teen Top, everyone contributes something different. I don’t want to feel like just one piece that’s missing a bigger whole. On my last EP that I worked on with Lucid Fall, I also tried to fill it with really diverse tracks. I really enjoy hearing things like “Niel does that kind of music, too?” The goal for all of my albums is to be as diverse as possible.
The songwriting duo Black Eyed Pilseung — who wrote Teen Top’s “Missing” and “Ah-Ah,” and the title track “Lovekiller” from your first solo EP — also wrote TWICE’s hit song “OOH-AHH,” which has been insanely successful. Why didn’t you get another song from them?
They were going to write a song for me, but they were busy, and while my comeback was in the works, they came out with a good song for someone else. So, I naturally chose “Love Affair.” My company agreed with me. It’s not that I need to pick a song from a certain songwriter — if there’s a good song, then I’ll sing it. Even if the songwriter is a rookie.
As someone who’s planning to complete a “breakup trilogy,” do you have any tips on channelling your feelings?
Actually, I write a lot of my music between schedules. I wrote the song “Signal,” from this EP, while I was in the van. I write lyrics and melody at the same time, so I use the car’s bluetooth to sing a little bit to the staff and see what they think. If they like it, I can go right to the studio and start recording.
Whose feedback is the most important to you?
All the staff who ride in the van with me. Since we’re all pretty close, they don’t mind being brutally honest. If they only said nice things to me it wouldn’t do me any good, so I ask them to tell me exactly what they think.
When your schedule’s done, what do you do?
I do a lot of gaming.
Overwatch?
Yes. Actually, just now, Chunji texted me asking if I want to go to a PC room with him. After this interview ends, I have to wash up and get going.
You don’t do it alone?
No… I even bought a computer, but doing it at home is no fun. It’s more exciting when you’re with someone else, cheering each other on. I feel really relaxed when I’m gaming. All I think about is, “I have to beat that person, I have to beat that team…” That’s the best, most carefree feeling. After clearing my head like that, I go back to the studio and start using my head again.
Is that why you need to leave now?
Ah, it’s not like that! (he laughs) I also have to eat, and Chunji’s probably waiting for me.

[💋]  Arena Homme January Issue - Lightchaser
Arena: You’re turning 24 years old on your 8th year since debut. Niel: Yeah, I debuted at 17 years old, it feels strange.
Arena: Surely a lot has changed since then. Your voice seemed to have changed a lot as well. Niel: Yes, my singing has improved. I grew taller too. I’ve grown at least 7~8cm since debut.
Arena: It was said that you were tone deaf before debut but now you are the main vocal. Niel: Haha I received a lot of scolding from my vocal teacher so I practiced a lot.
Arena: Did you know that you were tone deaf? Niel: I really had no idea. Even my dad and older brother were tone deaf as well. I used to sing in choirs, too. Same goes with my mom. My whole family is bad at singing so I really had no idea. I was clueless as to why my vocal teacher kept scolding me then. When we started recording, that’s when I found out but I was already at it (singing) anyway.  Had I known earlier, I wonder if I would’ve had the guts to debut. Come to think of it, I was really young when I debuted so I didnt think much.
Arena: Is it any different now? Niel:  It’s definitely what I wanted however, my desire changed. When we were rookies, I had a hunger to get first place on music shows. Right now I’m still trying to find what is it I really want and by all means do my best at it. I want to be a good musician.
Arena: We heard you’re coming out with your second solo album. Niel: I’m still preparing for it. We still can’t decide on the title track although there are already a lot of finished works.
Arena: Can you give us a brief introduction about this album? Niel: It is somewhat a continuation of my previous title track ‘Lovekiller’. It has a  little deeper lyrics than the previous one. I personally wanted it to be something more powerful, including the dance.
Arena: In a previous interview with us here at Arena, you mentioned that you’ve developed a habit wherein when a melody suddenly comes to your mind while walking, you try to record yourself humming it. Niel:  I still do it. There are actually a lot of voice files on my phone that I have lost count on. When I suddenly come up with lyrics, I also either record them or write it on a note. I have a lot of them saved so I can remember them.
Arena: Have you been using the keyboard and monitor that you bought before the release announcement of “Love Killer” to compose songs? Niel: I bought myself a MacBook and learned to play the MIDI keyboard. I’m not very good at it yet, though. To be honest, the only thing I did for the track is write the lyrics. There are some songs I wrote for the new album too. I also have one song that didn’t make it to the album, its working title is ‘Television’ so I have it on a mixtape. “When I appear on TV~~” I wrote it in this kind of motive. It goes like, my parents are happy when I appear on TV but it’s like I’m running out.. (full lyrics translation here - cr. sunshiniel). There’s another track I have on a mixtape but I still haven’t decided on the title. It’s a song with words of gratefulness to our fans and the kind of music that I am really into.
Arena: You want to write profound music? Why? Niel:  I’ve come to like strong and meaningful music. I have been into The Weeknd. I’ve listened to all his songs including the old ones. Needless to say that he has a good voice and good songs as well. His music is similar to the kind that I want to produce. I am also into Taemin sunbae’s music. I’ve seen all his interviews and stages. While I was watching his performances, I decided that I want my stages to be as strong as his.
Arena: Taemin is very confident on stage even during his solo promotions. How about Niel? Niel: I am a lot more nervous than when I stand on stage with the members. Actually no, I am so much more nervous. At the beginning of the song, I am all alone and I dont even have backup dancers. It was so scary. Haha.
Arena: What did you do after you finished your stage? Niel: I watched my performances. To be honest, during my ‘Lovekiller’ promotions, there was not a single performance that I was satisfied with. I feel that there was always something missing and it leaves me with a heavy heart.
Arena: Are you concerned about anything this time? Niel: So much more. I want to do so much better than before. I have been continuously recording but as I was about to record my self-composed song, I caught a cold. I think I was nervous all throughout the recording of the song that after it, I was down with a flu.
Arena: Did you eventually finish recording well? Niel: I wasn’t fully satisfied with it so we did a little modification. I’m a kind of person who slacks a lot but when I start doing something, I want it done perfectly. I do not want to show that I am unprepared when it comes to singing on stage.
Arena: What have you been slacking on? Niel: My looks. I don’t really care how I look. Things like that, I dont mind.
Arena: We heard that when the team asked you to take a selca earlier, you were embarassed. You said you don’t take good selcas. Niel: I don’t really like taking pictures of my face. I feel uncomfortable. Besides photos that the company requested of me, I don’t have any selcas saved on my phone. It’s not just selcas though, just any kind of picture of myself. Much like today’s photoshoot, I feel the same way about it. Every time the camera is on me and there are a lot of people looking at me..  “Am I a celebrity?”, this is what comes to my mind.
Arena: You are actually a celebrity! Niel: I don’t think much of myself as a celebrity. Maybe that’s why I dont mind how I look on photoshoots or broadcasts. My face has always been like this ever since I was in grade school.
Arena: Don’t younger people normally like to look cool? Niel: Really? I don’t think I remember myself being like that. I think I’ve almost never had that moment.
Arena: You must’ve been a cool and popular student. Niel: A little? When I was in grade school. Haha. I was really something back then. Every time a girl asked me to hang out, I said ‘okay!’ but I never showed up so they don’t ask me again. I always just hung around my guy friends. It was a lot of fun.
Arena: By the time you’ve announced your album, you would be 24 years old. What kind of guy do you think you will be? Niel: A guy who doesn’t give much attention to himself but rather a guy who loves going out with his friends. A guy who likes fashion but when there are two pieces of clothing in front of him, he will only buy one and use the remaining money to buy yummy food.  I think I remained to be the guy I was since grade school.
Arena: What kind of guy do you want to be then? Niel: Rather than the kind of guy, I think a lot of what kind of person I want to be. I want to become a successful adult and I want to be the kind of person who lives with a positive attitude.
Arena: What is success to Niel? Niel: To get a house and a car after my name.
Arena: That’s very simple. Niel: It’s not that I want to earn less money but I also don’t want to earn too much. It’s just I would like it better if I got myself a house with a garden and a swimming pool. Hmmm.. It would have an underground space where there is a PC cafe where I can hang out with and play games with my friends. On the second floor there will be a cocktail bar. On the 3rd floor, a billiard table or something similar... On the 4th floor will be an attic with a bed where I can sleep on and it doesn’t even need to be too big.
Arena: You’d have a huge house then. What about the car? In a previous interview with Arena, you mentioned that you like Bentley, do you still? Niel: I still like Bentley but there’s another car I want to buy. It’s the Porsche 911. The white one with the red roof.

EMU Design Studio Arc En Ciel Folding Table
Tumblr media
Arc En Ciel, or "rainbow" in French, is a small-space solution inspired by the chairs and tables that have filled Parisian parks and cafés since the 19th century. Weighing about 18 pounds, this durable, hardwearing Arc En Ciel Folding Table (2011) is produced with great attention to detail. The steel frame has a baked-on polyester powder-coated finish that stands up to the elements and withstands being folded and unfolded as your needs change. The Arc En Ciel folds completely flat for convenient storage and is suitable for outdoor and contract use. From sidewalk café to city balcony to backyard patio, the Arc En Ciel is a well-priced solution for any outdoor dining need. Made in Italy.
Studio Tolvanen Terassi Dining Table
Tumblr media
The husband-and-wife team of designers Julie and Mika Tolvanen works out of Studio Tolvanen in Helsinki, designing everything from furniture to accessories for companies around the globe. Though they share their lives together, each one approaches design from different directions. "We are both very independent minded," Julie explains. In fact, the Terassi Collection (2017) was their first project together. Inspired by 1930s-era furniture they came across on a visit to Timberline Lodge in Oregon, they endowed the Terassi Dining Table with a spaced-plank tabletop for excellent outdoor performance and round tapered legs for a leaner profile and rustic yet crafted appearance. "We wanted the overall feeling to be familiar but a bit lighter, a bit friendlier," Julie says. Terassi is expertly fashioned in high-quality teak with a beautiful straight grain. Includes a removable plug consisting of two concentric rings to accommodate umbrellas of various sizes. Made in Indonesia. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Stua Deneb Teak Bench
Tumblr media
Jesús Gasca is the principal designer at Stua, a furniture company that he founded in 1983 in San Sebastián, Spain. With his company’s name standing for solo tengo un amor – "I have only one love" – it’s Gasca’s mission to improve the habitat in which we live. His Deneb Teak Bench (2003) celebrates materials in their purest form, combining austere aluminum with smooth, slatted teak. The precision-engineered frame is assembled from four components that fit seamlessly together in support of the teak top. Clean-cut V-shaped legs are configured to increase stability and allow two or more benches to be put together for a unified ensemble. Sustainably harvested teak slats can be oiled to maintain their color or left to develop a beautiful silver patina. This bench can be used both indoors and out, on its own in an entryway or garden or with the Deneb Teak Table. Rubber glides protect floors. Assembly required. Made in Spain. Dougan Clarke Tuuci Ocean Master Rectangular Shade
Tumblr media
Protect yourself from elements but keep your view with the Tuuci Rectangular (2012), which is more horizontal than traditional dome-shaped umbrellas. Dougan Clarke, a consummate sailor who spent over a decade working with sails, rigging and boat design, knows what will stand up to sun, rain, salt and wind, and he designs his shades accordingly. This shade system is easy to use and maintain but constructed of replaceable marine-grade components to ensure a lifetime of serviceability. It features a clever cam cleat and pulley system to raise and lower the shade with ease. "I sought to redefine what was previously known as an umbrella," explains Clarke. "The resulting shade sculptures embody both form and function." As with other shades, keep it in a closed position during storms and when not in use. DWR is not responsible for accidents or damage caused by misuse or weather. Commercial quality. Made in U.S.A. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Skagerak Bell Lantern
Tumblr media
"A product has to be useful and realistic to be considered as good design," says Martin Solem. With this in mind, he designed the Bell Lantern (2018), a versatile nod to the traditional lantern. It consists of a glass jar set within a groove on a powder-coated steel base with a handle locked in the upright position. Suitable for use indoors and out. Candle not included. Max candle height: 3" for small, 4.5" for large. Made in China. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Design Within Reach Sommer Chaise
Tumblr media
Copenhagen-based designer Chris Halstrøm has a special knack for creating things for people she’ll probably never meet yet making them feel as if she knows them somehow. With her Sommer Outdoor Collection (2019), which she designed for DWR, Halstrøm wanted to give people the experience of indoor furniture in outdoor spaces. "I was intrigued by the idea of bringing the look of paper-cord weaving, often found on Danish indoor furniture, to the outdoors, but in a weather-safe material," she says. "I wanted it to feel natural, and open up that wall between indoors and out." This duality gives the collection an openness that she says makes it very easy to live with. "I find it interesting to create something that people can read their own stories into, and make it their own. For me, furniture is at its most interesting when you see it being enjoyed by people." Made in Indonesia. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Obeetee Indra Outdoor-Indoor Rug
Tumblr media
Named for deities of the heavens, Indra (2018) is a lightweight flat-weave fringed rug fashioned from polyester yarns with a soft feel, dyed using a special technique that imbues each yarn with multiple tones to produce a striking heather effect. Obeetee employs skilled artisans to craft handmade rugs using skills that are passed down from one generation to the next. To give back to communities, the company also spearheads Women Weavers, a program for teaching the art of carpet weaving to women in need. Lightweight, easy to clean and suitable for use indoors and out. Rug pad recommended. Made in India. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Plodes Studio Geometric Fire Pit
Tumblr media
Growing up in a resourceful do-it-yourself family, John Paul Plauché learned how to design and create objects at an early age. A man with an inquisitive, artistic mind, Plauché earned a degree in architecture before starting Plodes Studio. Today, this multidisciplinary workshop provides clients with architectural, interior and product design solutions. Whether he’s working on a limited-edition piece of art or a mass-produced shelving system for Google’s offices, Plauché’s approach is about simplicity. "My work is the result of a coalescence of art, product and architectural design," says the designer. His handcrafted Geometric Fire Pit (2004) is available in a choice of two sizes and two metals – A36 low-carbon steel or Corten steel – and can be used with seasoned wood or charcoal. A pipe-shaped plug is included for preventing coals and ash from falling through the opening while allowing enough airflow to fuel the fire. For outdoor use only. Made in U.S.A. Loll Designs Lollygagger Chaise
Tumblr media
"We make outdoor furniture for the modern lollygagger," explains Loll founder Greg Benson. "Our furniture is for people who are looking for fresh design that’s made in the U.S.A. with sustainable manufacturing practices. At Loll, we strive to inspire people to appreciate the outdoors both by the way we make our products and how they are intended to be used." Starting as a side project, Loll was founded in 2006 by a custom skate park manufacturer as a way to repurpose excess ramp material. That original company is gone, but Loll still designs and produces durable all-weather outdoor furniture made from 100% recycled and recyclable plastic, mostly from reclaimed post-consumer milk jugs. Since the company’s founding, its dedication to the environment has kept more than 100 million milk jugs out of landfills. The Lollygagger Collection (2014) is waterproof, fade-resistant and maintenance-free, making it perfect for use indoors and out. Each piece ships flat to save on packing materials; simple assembly required (Allen wrench included). Made in U.S.A. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Dusen Dusen Towel
Tumblr media
Ellen Van Dusen studied the psychology of design and the brain’s reaction to visual stimuli at Tufts University. After graduating, she launched Brooklyn-based Dusen Dusen, a clothing line that soon became known for its lively original prints, then expanded the brand in 2015 to include bedding and towels. Dusen draws her inspiration from a variety of sources, such as midcentury resort architecture, Italian industrial design and Scandinavian textiles. Her wonderfully playful Dusen Dusen Towel (2018) is marked by vivid colors and bold patterns that captivate. It sports a jacquard weave, so its sides are opposites of each other. Machine washable. Made in Turkey. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Skagerak Cutter Bench
Tumblr media
In the 1990s, Danish designer Niels Hvass became a leader in the Nordic design scene by creating furniture that earned him awards and recognitions from Bo Bedre, Georg Jensen and The Design Foundation. He designed his teak Cutter Collection to challenge overly nostalgic wooden outdoor furnishings, bringing elegance and simplicity to outdoor spaces, as well as interior ones. Originally intended for gardens and patios, the Cutter Bench (2008) is also fitting for kitchens and bathrooms. This piece features specially engineered mortise-and-tenon joints and metal rail inlays for durability. Like all teak products, it will develop a rich, silvery patina over time, or it can be treated with teak oil to maintain its original luster. Like all teak products, it will develop a rich, silvery patina over time, or it can be treated with teak oil to maintain its original luster. Please note: At first, the wood will be lighter than what’s shown in photos. Made in Thailand. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
HAY Palissade Dining Armchair
Tumblr media
Brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec founded their Paris-based design firm in 1999, where they design architectural projects, large-scale art installations, furniture, rugs, tableware and home accessories. Their work has been exhibited worldwide, from MoMA in New York to Centre Pompidou in Paris to Tel Aviv Museum of Art. For the Danish design collective HAY, the brothers designed the Palissade Collection (2015). Designed in color and form to integrate effortlessly into a natural landscape or urban setting, this collection stands out for its combination of visual simplicity and core strength. Palissade is strong without being bulky, elegant without being fragile. Stacks up to eight high. Made in China. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Case Eos Rectangular Table
Tumblr media
When we asked Matthew Hilton to identify the common elements found in his work, he replied, "Functional, stackable, it has to store easily and be a good price." Fast-forward to today, and he’s still staying true to those ideals. Seeing a need for durable outdoor furniture at accessible prices, Hilton created the Eos Collection (2011), which is sleek enough to work in an indoor dining space, as well. Eos is lightweight – literally and visually – smartly proportioned and very comfortable. Certain to inspire leisurely outdoor living during the long days of summer, this collection was named for Eos, the Greek goddess of dawn and bringer of light. It’s constructed of powder-coated aluminum that won’t rust over time. Rectangular and Square tables fit seamlessly together to create a longer table when needed. Photo Courtesy of Design Within Reach
Serralunga Cup Planter, Large
Tumblr media
After a brief career as a watch designer, Naoto Fukasawa moved to the United States to work for the design firm IDEO in 1989. Still learning English, Fukasawa used visuals to communicate with his Silicon Valley coworkers as they designed computers, medical devices, furniture and sporting goods. In 1996 he returned to Japan, where he launched IDEO’s Tokyo office, and seven years later he started his own company. Fukasawa’s approach to design is based on careful observation of people’s actions and feelings. It is in the study of these behaviors that he is able to create products that fit into people’s lives so naturally that they are "Without Thought" – a concept he now teaches at two universities and to clients worldwide. In designing his Cup Planter (2003), Fukasawa was inspired by the curved shape of ancient wooden bowls to create "a cozy atmosphere for plants." The double-walled construction is crafted of UV- and weather-resistant polyethylene that is 100% recyclable. Cup can be drilled in the center from the inside out to allow drainage. Made in Italy. Brown Jordan Sol y Luna Lounge Chair
Tumblr media
Sol y Luna (1954) is an adaptation of Dan Johnson's Gazelle Collection, which was originally offered in wood or bronze, both with woven caning for the seat and back. However, due to the high cost of production and the intense hand labor involved, fewer than 150 pieces from the Gazelle line were ever produced. Now made in durable cast aluminum by outdoor manufacturer Brown Jordan, the design maintains Johnson's comfortable organic form. These pieces are shaped with the body in mind. The Lounge Chair back wraps around you, and the seats are comfortably sloped for support in a relaxed position. Photo courtesy of Design Within Reach
Menu Well Watering Can
Tumblr media
Former members of the studio Norway Says, Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll started their own studio in 2009 after collaborating together on several successful international exhibitions. Their work in furniture, lighting and accessories has brought international accolades, including "Designer of The Year" honors in Norway. Simple yet functional, their Well Watering Can (2015) features an ample handle for easy carrying, large opening for fast filling and an extra-long spout for reaching into all those tight areas. Made in China. Photo Courtesy of Menu We love the products we feature and hope you do, too. If you buy something through a link on the site, we may earn an affiliate commission.
