Sooo... Where's the coffe shop AU where Goncharov and Katya are in a lavender relationship and they keep going on "dates" in this little cafe specifically to see the two cute baristas???? Sofia sensing this totally not cute regular is unhappy so she tries to befriend her to learn what's going on??? Goncharov mentioning he needs someone trustworthy to help him fix something or other in their apartment while trying to make small talk with andrey who says "I'm trustworthy"??? Sofia and andrey smoking and drinking and laughing and maybe crying a little bit after their late night shift while talking about how they got themselves into this mess??????

Goncharov understood the problem /w mafia films
After a few days watching Goncharov trend here I decided to give it a try and I watched ALL 3 HOURS of this absolute MASTERPIECE and I would like to add something that I don't see people talking about: I hate mafia films because every time the plot goes towards romanticizing said mafia, and I find it disgusting (I live in Italy and for us it’s not a fucking game, it’s a plague, tragedies occurred that scarred our nation) but I would never have imagined that a 1970 film could portrait the horrors of the mafia system so REALISTICALLY! It shows that it’s not cool, not sexy, not fun, it’s draining, it’s gruesome, it kills you slowly and kills the people around you. The time imagery is SO spot on in this case because every major character is constantly running away from this system that trapped them; they all have a dream life they would like if they could, but the mafia spiral is a constant threat. I absolutely LOVED the scene where Mario Ambrosini a few moments before his betrayal told Goncharov that he would like to open a bakery in his next life, to which Goncharov responded saying that he prefers alcohol to pastry and Mario stated that he would gladly make him a babbà (an alcohol-based small pastry). Even in extremely calm and slow paced scenes you can feel that they are ready to jump and run again. It’s unnerving and anxiety inducing and it’s perfect. This film is absolutely majestic, it was able to touch all the problems that the rest of the mafia film have. It doesn’t romanticize the mafia, it shows that what they do is a-moral, but they don't have a choice, it shows growth, it shows that you can overcome the worst situations together, it shows that feeling vulnerable towards who you love it's not a weakness. But sadly this love will never be fulfilled, because the vicious cycle of violence caught them. They ran out of time.
What Sofia said during her death, in the back of that car, summarize it perfectly: “We didn’t have time to begin with Katya, the hourglass was empty since the beginning”

me: and Sofia is Jewish and was born in France, and when WWII started she was sent to live with nuns in a monastery in Italy! and we think she lost her leg in some kind of riot around this time, but its also possibly she just was born without it! there's also trivia about the prosthetic leg and how special effects weren't that great back then so we only see the prosthetic very briefly.

Honestly, I love the conflicting information that without context so insane but I cried so hard at the part when the scene at first shows Sofia Toussaint walking into the empty, unwelcoming and hollow home as if she finally got away from her tragic past and is turning a new leaf, a new life only for the movie to take an abrupt turn back to the cold lands of Iceland showing the aftermath of Kayta performing her betrayal against Sofia. That combined with the way that the camera slowly panned out to show Sofia's dying body while Kayta walks away shedding a single tear to juxtapose Sofia's near blissful smile as her last icy breath is drawn hurts in a special way.
