INGREDIENT

Spomegranate and ginger spritzer (Winter)

4oz LyftED Lemonade

1 cup of fresh pomegranate juice (juice from 2 – 3 pomegranate)

2 t lime or lemon juice

1/3 cup sugar (you could add 1/2 cup)

5cm piece of fresh ginger thinly sliced

lime/ lemon wedges to serve

pomegranate seeds for garnish

It’s impossible to think your way into sober living, we must live our way into sober thinking. Prior to getting sober I could explain to you the psychology behind addiction. I knew all about the causes, signs, symptoms, effects. I could list the pre-dispositions, the theoretical frameworks, the scientific reasoning, and the medical explanation for addiction. I knew all about who, what, when, where, and why. Unfortunately, and to my great disdain… none of that helped me in the slightest. I may have intellectually understood all the components of addiction and recovery, but knowing the who, what, when, where, and why but I was missing the most important piece… the HOW? Active addiction is lived, it’s survived, and so is recovery. Sure learning all about recovery, sobriety, addiction healing is great, but at the end of the day we have to put that knowledge to use. I THINK I'VE QUIT ALCOHOL...

Last month, I told my friends that I’m doing Dry January.

I got some raised eyebrows. I'm known for being the party girl who's always up for having a drink. Happy hour? I'm there. Boozy brunch? Yes please. Skeezy round the nightclub smoking area pounding vodka redbulls until 4am?

I've been guilty.

My closest friendships have been formed while riding the merry-go-round of casual drug taking and binge drinking. YES, everything's cooled off somewhat now we're all approaching 30. But if I told people I was thinking of quitting drinking forever, they'd actually think I'd lost my mind.

They wouldn't know who I was anymore.

And, truth be told, the first time the thought occurred to me, I wondered if I was losing my mind.

I didn't know who I was anymore.

And that made it feel like quitting drinking might actually be valuable and important in terms of helping me grow and develop as a human being.

Anyway, it's February now and I still don't have the urge to drink. I know I’m really going to get some raised eyebrows if I tell my friend's I've decided to follow up Dry January with Feb Fast.

But I might have to.

The truth is that I haven’t enjoyed drinking alcohol for a long time.

The truth is, I’ve gained a new perspective on drinking that makes me wonder if, after the age of 23 or so, I ever really enjoyed alcohol at all.

I know I’m not the only former party girl out there, who’s approaching 30 and starting to have these revelations.

At first, I guess, I wondered if it might just be me.

Am I not cool any longer, because I don’t wanna kick on after the pub and get a bag and talk shit around someone's outdoor Bunnings set and smoke cigarettes until the first rays of Sunday sun hit my filthy creature hide?

Is the problem me - that the drunken banter's starting to give me groundhog day vibes?

That if I have to say 'How's your night been' at 4am to an Uber driver, one more time, I really might fucking snap?

That I don't wanna start the workweek already on the back foot, not feeling really 'myself' until late on Tuesday (which I promptly counteract by treating myself to a few drinks that night)?

It’s one thing to start to recognise the problems created by your drinking.

It’s quite another thing to get yourself into a headspace when you find yourself actually capable of disentangling yourself from the problem.

As recently as six weeks ago I never thought I would be actually capable of giving up alcohol.

This is even though I haven’t enjoyed drinking alcohol for about eight months now.

I started making a concerted effort to cut down about three months ago. Even then, I never thought I'd make it through the week without the ‘reward’ or ‘stress-relief’ of a couple of weeknight drinks.

It felt even more impossible that I might stay sober over the weekend.

But something has happened to me recently. I’ve discovered I’m able to abstain from alcohol and I’m starting to enjoy it.

I started this blog to connect with others experiencing the same change. I want to explore and make sense of the highs and lows of going from sober curious to loving a sober lifestyle.
