twin au but Danny sorta knew who his father was
(this sounds sadder in my head but)
Danny may or may not have an idea that he was adopted, courtesy of Jazz, but he didn't mind it. It was when he started to grow over the years that he started to have second doubts about those thoughts.
You see, Danny has a dad, a mom, and a sister. A complete family and normal family if you were to ask Danny when he was younger. Now though, after a few years of being cared for by Jazz 24/7 and his parents coming to tell him that they love him before leaving to work all day in their lab had twisted his perspectives of the family to only Jazz.
Then he started having thoughts.
What if he had stayed with his original family?
What if they gave him away?
Can he find them?
Questions turned into a need to find a family that he once had. He doesn’t know for certain if his family gave him away since even Jazz didn’t know where their parents found him, but it was worth a shot trying to find out.
So, he turned for help.
In retrospect, maybe asking both of his best friends to help his search for looking for his family isn’t the best idea when one of them has the funds to do so and the other is able hack a bit too well.
He also doesn’t know if he should cure or bless the fact that Danny has all the equipment needed under his home to scan his DNA and use that sample to find his birthparents.
But it any case they found out who his father was at least.
Bruce “Brucie” god damn Wayne.
The chaos that erupted was just-
On one hand, he was known to adopt orphans left and right, the billionaire label next to his name, and Wayne Enterprises.
On the other he was also known as a playboy.
He gets brownie points when Sam was once complemented by the man on her goth attire when she went to one of their galas once.
I mean, he can’t be all that bad, can he?
Because he’s a playboy, maybe this might hint that Danny was born from one of those nights and he never knew? It would be reasonable and maybe that was why he was adopted or given away. Would mister Wayne want him? Would he be happy to see him?
His friends let he have space and time and Jazz told them that she would always be there for him, so it was nice to know that even if mister Wayne didn’t want him, he still had his family.
Danny decided to wait and watch for a bit and became obsessed with learning all about the Wayne’s, the history, the family and even news on Wayne Enterprises as well. He wanted to know everything about his family (even if they’re not family yet) and to understand them a little bit more before he made his decision.
Was this some form of level of stalking? Yes. Did Danny care? A little. Was he going to stop? No.
Damian wondered what it would be like to have a brother like Dick who seemed to be very sunny. Or maybe a sister like Cassandera who traveled all around the world. Or maybe to have a genius brother like Tim or what it would be like to have met Jason before he passed away.
He wonders and wonders and decided.
Then finally, finally when Danny felt that maybe, just maybe that he was ready something big happen.
Damian Wayne came into the picture.
And the world turned over its head once he saw his face.
Because his face looked just like Danny’s.
Danny didn’t come out of his room for days.
He had a twin? Maybe? I mean, Damian looked exactly like him in so many ways except for his green eyes. But if... if Damian, from what the papers said was true, then Damian was Bruce’s, Dad’s(?), biological son. Which means that Damian is biologically Danny’s brother at least.
To make matters worse, Damian was given by his mom to live with Bruce.
His mom was out there, and she didn’t even bother with him but she chooses to keep Damian?
Was he not enough?
Was he a burden?
Did Damian know about him?
Will his dad even want him?
Would his entry now be bad since it would look like he would be exploiting Mr. Wayne?
Would he even want him now if Damian is in the picture?
Danny didn’t know what to do so he did nothing.
(He was glad he had Jazz to cry on. He was glad to have Sam and Tucker to protect him at school. He was glad that he would still have someone even if his family rejects him.)
So, he watched in silence once again for years to come, falling in love more and more with the family he never reached out to.
A few years pass by and the love for his family grew and grew until he wanted to be a part of the picture too.
He went up to Jazz one day with a smile and told her it was time.
Then...
Then he died and that changed everything.
Why why why whywhywhywhywhWHYWHWYHWYHWYHYW
WHY?
WHY DID HE HAD TO DIE?
HOW CAN HE FACE THEM NOW?
HOW HE CAN HE FACE THEM WHEN HE WAS A MONSTER?
A monster that was now being hunted down!
What good would it be?
What good would it be for someone like him to be a part of their family?
Who would want him?
No...
How can he live with himself if he leads someone like Shulker to their home?
How can he protect them?
How would they love him if he might be the reason they might get hurt?
And the anti-ecto act! Bruce Wayne is funding the Justices League, so they also work with the government. Would try too arrest him? Would they just turn him in?
What does he do?!?!!
...
What does he do....

Marisa backstory right this instant 🔫
People want to know about my original character? The giant scarred lesbian? She’s so scary 😭
I can’t reveal too much until the next part of Pinky Promises is finally complete (I’m juggling 8 fics right now). But she’s a protective and possessive yandere who takes awhile to realize she’s very, very gay.
It also depends on which AU I have her in. But she’s almost always a very protective and quite aggressive woman with ugly facial scars on the left side of her face. She only has a soft spot for her beloved childhood friend and she’s not shy about showing off her feelings at all. She’d lay her life down for her love if she had to. You’ll never find a lover more devoted than her.
She’s not conventionally attractive at all with a prominent dorsal humo on her large nose, cinnamon eyes, and short, crimson hair. She’s more masculine looking than most men.
Tumblr media
But Marisa was once an orphan who was abandoned by her parents because of her blood red hair. People with red hair are believed to have monster blood in them due to their enhanced physical strength. And her parents were scared she’d grow up violent due to her temper she had as a child (she just wanted attention from them). So they left her on the street where she learned how to survive for a few years before the orphanage picked her up.
But she was not a child anyone wanted. She had a horrible temper and was very hostile due to her trust issues. No one wants a broken child… at least until she met (your name).
Marisa was weary at first and constantly tried to shove the other girl away from her but failed. It takes awhile for them to get close but Marisa latches on once she realizes she’s (your name)’s protector. Something about protecting gets her going.
She ruins potential new friends ships and even adoption processes to keep (your name) by her side. She doesn’t give a shit if no one likes her, she just needs her best friend. They’re a package deal.
So when they’re adopted together, she’s so happy. She doesn’t ever want to leave their side. Marisa doesn’t realize it’s love she feels but she constantly crawls in their bed with them to sleep.
The older they get, the more Marisa wants to impress her sweet (your name). She starts to steal again. She’ll steal nice desserts, meals, and once she decides to steal jewelry which makes her run into a particularly nasty guard. The guard shows no mercy as he takes it upon himself to ‘punish’ her.
The left side of her face is permanently disfigured in ugly scars. It’s hard to look at her face for most people now but not her best friend. Marisa adores the affection her friend shows her. It’s when she begins to realize she’s in love with her, that it all makes sense to Marisa.
(Your name) is never getting rid of her. Marisa’s touches become more bold and she’ll start to press kisses all over her shoulders and neck. It becomes an all consuming hunger and she has every intention to satiate it.
She starts to become the ferocious monster everyone believed her to be to everyone else but to her lover. She’d do anything to protect her princess after all.

Random Things I forgot to add in my braindump for my Radio AU:
Twilight is Time and Malon’s nephew. I think I’m going to make his relation through Uli, so that makes Uli and Malon sisters in this AU
Legend used to go to college in Mabe City, but moved away after his Koholint Trauma happened. He still has friends there, like Ralph, Din, and Nayru, but he rarely visits
Sun races cars. Not professionally or for sport, no. She’ll just drive at 80mph down some old country road for the hell of it. Sky and Groose often join her
Sky, Sun, and Groose all came from Sky City. That said, they somehow never met until college. They find this very funny and will call each other “strangers”
Legend and Fable’s biological father is Raven, but he was very inconsistent with his job and eventually left them with Alfon, his adopted brother (and I am realizing I need a family tree for this AU😵‍💫).
Time is an orphan. He was never adopted growing up, but he was closest to the Kokiri family. They had a daughter named Saria who he still calls his older sister. She’s an ecologist now
Time secretly spoils Wolfie
Twilight will take Wolfie for “walks” (aka, he will sneak Wolfie into his and Wild’s house despite there being a strict no dogs policy. Revali has tried getting them in trouble before but hasn’t succeeded yet)
Wolfie is the favorite whenever Wild hosts a party
Time has somehow become emotionally attached to these radio kids. He was not supposed to get emotionally attached
Sky and Sun hope to get married sometime after graduation, preferably sooner than later
First is everyone’s favorite when he’s around. That said, he’s still the oldest and most responsible when having fun.
Crimson swears
Ravio has tried reaching Sheerow to talk
Legend doesn’t drive (anymore)
Warriors has the gaudiest car, according to Legend. Legend’s right
Styla and Legend are like BFFs. They also met when Legend did Fashion Design. Styla often makes costumes for the school plays as well
Shadow hung out with a bad crowd in high school. He’s doing better now.
Where are the colors you ask? Four’s genderfluid so he uses them to indicate his gender. Vio = she/her. Green = he/him. Red = they/them. Blue= any, they don’t care.
Vaati is Shadow’s biological father, who married Four’s mom when Shadow and Four were 12. Four’s mom died when they were 14, then Vaati went into prison when they were 15 (they really are unrelated incidents). They began living with Grandpa Smith after that.
Yuga is Ravio and Hilda’s dad. He’s really strict and not a good person. He wants them both to go into business. Ravio is playing his hand until he can be totally independent. Hilda is a high school senior and wants to major in fine art. Yuga hates this. He especially hates that Ravio is completely supportive of Hilda… and also that Ravio never comes around anymore.
Hilda’s started being invited to Legend’s uncle’s house for holidays. She can’t come to all of them because of Yuga but she does come to Thanksgiving now
Alfon refuses to let anyone be alone over the holidays. He will force Legend and Ravio to bring their friends over if they have no one in the area or anywhere to go
Flora and Fauna grew up under a lot of pressure from their dad. Fauna feels it more since she’s older, but Flora definitely feels it too. They’re both perfectionists
Impa and Purah are Paya’s cousins in this AU. Paya’s very shy so they try to get her to go out more. Paya has a huge crush on Wild and is teased endlessly for it
Flora has this huge crush on this one guy in her anthropology class. His name is Tauro
Age and Wild didn’t get along for a long time after the house fire. Wild got his burns and amnesia from protecting Age but obviously doesn’t remember this. As a kid, Age thought Wild was purposefully forgetting everything. Wild honestly feels horrible for forgetting and is trying to get his memory back, but he hasn’t had much luck
Age and Wild are both named Link. It’s a family thing. They go by their middle names. Wilder is Wild’s official middle name. Age’s official middle name is August.
On the other hand, both Flora and Fauna’s middle names are Zelda. Flora’s full name is Florence Zelda Hyrule. Fauna’s name is just Fauna.
^ this is the same for Dawn and Aurora too
Hyrule, Dawn, and Aurora come from a very small town named Mido. Hyrule would play “Knights of Hyrule” with Dawn in the farm fields all around them. It’s where he gets his nickname from
Hyrule’s friends in high school were Bot, Error, and Bagu

thinking about miss delight x orphan reader (platonically!)
warning! Mentions of broken bones? Idk that’s about it.
It would have the same concept as the player being a former employee and coming back because of the letter, but instead you’re a orphan that grew up there ever since your parents left you there.
you were close with the miss delight bot’s, they were so motherly and patient with you no matter how many times you messed up in class.
though one of the Delights stood out to you, it was hard to separate her from the rest since they’re so identical. But you knew it was always her when she would sit down with you when you sat by yourself at play time, or when she’d pat your head whenever she’d past by your desk.
she would call you all kinds of sweet names! ‘Apple’, ‘barbie’, ‘honey’
she was the closest thing to a mother you could get.
Sometimes you’d even call her mom in class- she didn’t seem to mind though. you’re her child after all!
though eventually you were adopted, only a day before the Hour of joy.
You didn’t know it happened, how could you? You were too busy with your disgusting new family!
she missed you, how couldn’t she? The Hour of joy didn’t bring as much joy if you couldn’t be there to watch her kill those pigs
why did you come back? It wasn’t because of a letter, you only went back for the memories the company brought you. For the nostalgia..
for her.
though when you showed up it was horrific, having to go past Huggy wuggy, mommy long legs and so many other toys you once felt so close to. It’s when you went to the school to get that battery did it really fuck you up.
the silence was too loud, not even your own footsteps and heart beat in your ears could fill it enough. This school used to be so loud, so bubbly.. so much more brighter
full of life.
but now…?
the paints that gave this place colour long since chipped off from the walls, trash and littered around (only wrappers, there wasn’t any wasted food?) and lights flickering.
you shivered, you wish you never came back.
holding your bag tighter you continued on, pointedly pushing down those feelings trying to worm themselves up to resurface. It wasn’t the time to get emotional
you wonder if she’s still here, or did she die too? What happened to the other teachers?
you grit your teeth and before you could think anymore the speakers that filled the corners of the school crackled to life, startling you with a jump as you snapped your head up to look up at the closest one.
“Y-you… I know you! You used to be an orphan here!”
that voice…
“You came back! I’d warn you to leave but…”
somewhere in the distance you could hear the schools front doors slam shut with a bang, making you tense up further if it were any possible. You’re locked in
“I always knew it was too early for you to leave the birds nest! I was beginning to think you died”
Your eyes drifted from the worn speaker and to the camera next to it, pointed at right you.
ah.. so that’s how she could see you. Makes sense..
“But barb always gave me hope!” Who the fuck is barb? “And she was right! It gets so lonely here..”
this was a bad idea.. why are you even helping these toys!? You should just run for it while you still can
and you did just that, turning on your heal of your sneakers and running back down the hall you were just walking through. You jumped over lockers that were fallen on the ground and other junk to avoid tripping.
the exit doors were in sight, yes! Maybe you could wedge them open?
Just as you passed a open door leading to a classroom you once attended you felt someone swing something sharp into your shoulder blade
“Ahh! Oh fuck!” You tripped on your own feet at the sudden pain, falling onto your side onto the dirty floor as you grit your teeth. You squeezed your eyes shut as your undamaged arm came up to hold your shoulder while it leaked blood.
“Watch your mouth! I don’t wanna have to stuff your mouth full of soap, especially since there’s barely any down here!”
you blinked your eyes open, tears spilling down as footsteps approached. Looking up you saw her.
her face was torn up so bad you didn’t even recognise her, her dressed ripped and torn like a bear went at her. Golden hair a mess that stupid red bow still in it..
she had what looked like a makeshift weapon in her hand made from a ruler and multiple colouring penciled, stained with blood. Some old and flaking off, and some fresh, yours.
“Mom…?”
you didn’t mean to sound so pathetic and scared, but as you used your feet to push yourself away while she stepped over you couldn’t help but feel like a little kid again. Bruised and hurt as she’d kiss your wounds..
times change..
“Welcome home apple, don’t worry.”
she stopped just short of in front of you, tilting her head with a pleaded smile on her face (or as close as a smile as she can get). A croaky and broken laugh escaping her like you wish you could right now, eyes wide and pupils blown.
this isn’t your mom.. not anymore.
was she ever your mom to begin with? Or just a machine who was always ready to kill
“I’ll make sure you never leave the nest again, who needs wings to fly anyway when you can just stay with me?”
your eyes widened with fear as she brought up her weapon, and you let out a scream as she brought it down.
after all, it’d be harder to run if your legs were broken.

Not sure if my request went through but I’ll ask anyways. Can I request a vigilante!reader? I honestly don’t care about the gender. The reader is younger than Tim but older than Damian. They’re super smart and do tons of martial arts and just a total badass. the batfam has been trying to catch them for a couple of months since the reader been stealing their missions. So one day when the reader is stopping a drug deal and was about to leave. Night wing and robin (Damian) jump in front of them. They have a fight and Damian manages to knock them out. They take the reader back to the bat cave and put them in a cell or something, and like interrogate them. So they find out that the reader is a kid, orphan and knows their secret identities because like I said, they’re super smart. Bruce sees the potential and gives them a option. Ether be adopted by him or go to jail. Reader and Damian are against the idea but the reader has no choice but to agree?
Kinda got rid of the no choice thing. Since this is non-yandere, Batman isn't the type to force this or actually have reader arrested.
Content warnings: none aside mentions of canon style violence and crimes.
You never thought the Bat would stoop so low. Threatening you with jail time as if *he* and his not so little brood didn't do the same things you did. Vigilantism was a crime but yet there were sanctioned heros too! What you were doing wasn't any different from them. Would he have superman arrested if it was the same situation?
"This is bullshit Bruce." You glared. "Why have me arrested when I've been fucking *helping* you?" Normally you didn't curse so much but you were angry and handcuffed so you couldn't exactly lash out any other way.
He knew you knew who he and his brood were. You'd made that known as soon as you woke up threatening to release the information with proof if he didn't let you go. Which just made him want to help you more. As angry as you were, you were just a kid. A teen with no family who had so much potential, "It's because you were helping that I haven't turned you in yet."
Damien knew his father was bluffing. Bruce was not the type to get someone arrested over this behaivor. No he was more likely to have you leave Gotham or send you to work with a group to learn. "Father let us be done with this. Send them on their way. We don't *need* anyone else on the team nor in the manner. And *clearly* they don't wish to be here." Really Damien didn't want someone taking his place on the team. He was the blood son and the rightful Robin!
"Listen to him, I don't know what crawled up your batty butt; but this isn't fucking cool." You glare felt impressive but the two watching you could only picture a feral kitten hissing.
Bruce relented uncuffing you, "You have potential. If you change your mind and want a place to be taught and call home you know where I am." The fact it had been a bluff now painfully obvious to you.
"Don't count on it old man. I... I won't actually leak you and your family's identities." The second sentence was quieter as you left the cave.
Damien glared at your back as you left, "Father are you certain about this? They're a liability."
"No Damien I don't think they are." Brice hoped eventually you'd join him and the family until then he'd have the team looking after you where he could. Maybe you'd do better with Jason? Regardless he had work to do and was choosing to ignore the way his son was pouting....he meant glaring.

Quick Random Superman thoughts/prompt things after watching Superman and Superman II. (Listen, I love Henry Cavill but Christopher Reeve was also incredibly handsome and I feel like he’s being slept on. But these can work for any version of Superman.)
1. Martha and Jonathan Kent were just driving along down the country road in Kansas when some sort of explosion in a nearby empty field caused their car to get a flat tire and veer off the road. Upon investigating the strange object that left a charred path in its wake, the couple discovered a boy and a girl, naked as the day they were born, climbing out from the crater, lifting their arms triumphantly with smiles on their faces. Martha and Jonathan wrapped the matching red and blue fabric they found in the strange object around your waists to cover your lower halves up. While Jonathan worked on replacing the flat tire, Martha marveled at the two of you.
“All these years, as happy as we’ve been…how I’ve prayed the good lord see fit to give us a child. And now here’s two. A boy and a girl.” She was ecstatic when you and the boy both hugged her, wrapping your arms around her neck and waist.
“Now the first thing we’ve got to do when we get home is find out who that boy and girl’s proper family is.”
“They haven’t got any. Not around here, anyway.”
“Martha, are you thinking what I think you’re thinking?”
“We could say they’re the twins of my cousin in North Dakota. And just now orphaned.”
“Oh, Martha.”
“Jonathan, they’re only babies.”
“Martha… Now, you saw how we found them. Martha Clark Kent, are you listening to what I’m saying?”
Though neither she nor Jonathan could know for sure, they had a feeling you were brother and sister, possibly even twins, if your resemblance in the eyes, face, or hair color was anything to go by. Or the superhuman strength when you both lifted their truck as if it was nothing more than a paperweight after the car jack slipped and gave out. That could’ve given it away too. And so the couple adopted you both, giving you the earth names of Clark and Y/N and raising you as their son and daughter. Your new birthday was the day they found you.
What would growing up with your alien brother and human parents be like? Your human father always used to say you were both brought to Earth for a reason. When you were both eighteen and lost him to a heart attack, you went all the way to the North Pole where you weren’t cold at all, where you discovered the living hologram of your biological father, Jor-El, who explained who you both were and answered any other questions you had. What would your human life be while Clark uses eyeglasses and a job as a reporter at the Daily Planet to disguise himself? How would you and Clark cover for each other when your secret identities almost get exposed, like when Lois throws herself into the rushing water to try to prove Clark is Superman? When she discovers she was right all along after she sees he has no burn on his hand from the fireplace, he’d have no choice but to come clean, not just about himself, but about you too and tell her yes, you’re his biological sister and yes, you’re the other superhero that’s been seen flying around with him. When he and Lois are forming their romance and going on dates, especially in the Fortress of Solitude, your brother doesn’t need to tell you twice. He doesn’t even need to tell you once. You make yourself scarce while he and Lois get intimate. You have much better things to do than awkwardly be around and act as a third wheel.
2. You’re either a citizen of Atlantis or Talokan. Either way, you live deep in the sea but somehow find yourself falling in love with Superman, the last son of Krypton, an alien from outer space, whether you’re aware of it or not. Maybe you met him as Clark Kent first. “A bird may love a fish, but where would they live?” story. A good ol’ “They’re from different worlds and can’t be together…or can they?” romance. You maybe use technology or some sort of powerful object to grant Clark the ability to breathe underwater so he can see your home. For a man (alien?) of such incredible powers, he can still drown. Uh oh if your brother is Arthur Curry/Aquaman and he finds out you’re dating Superman, especially before joining the Justice league. Not because of what he can do to Clark/Kal-El, but what Clark/Kal-El can do to him. Arthur grabbed Bruce by the collar and shoved him against a wall, but Bruce is just an ordinary human. Or you’re Namor’s daughter or sister and don’t have blue skin like the Talokanil so both you and Clark thought the other was human (surprisingly easy to hide your pointed ears with a hat and/or long thick hair and your winged ankles with the right kind of socks and shoes.) But oh no when you each discover the other isn’t human after all. You’re a mutant, he’s an alien. But maybe a match between the two of you could be used to form an alliance between earth and sea and possibly even space even though Krypton has been destroyed?
3. Sorta The Last Of Us inspired: You’re Clark Kent’s/Kal-El’s biological daughter. You’re not the result of some heinous science experiment involving cloning or stealing his DNA or anything of the sort. You were born normally, but during a dangerous situation in which Lois was under extreme stress and, for whatever reason, she had no other option but to give birth alone and cut the umbilical cord herself with a shard of green Kryptonite since it was the only sharp object around. You have inherited all your father’s powers just like your brothers Conner and Jonathan, but you’re immune to most, if not all types of kryptonite. Not just the green variety. Red, Gold, Yellow, Black... It doesn’t weaken or have any effect on you and you can’t be killed with it. You have no reaction to it at all. To you, it’s just a glowing rock. Pretty, but… Scientists are baffled and want to experiment on you to learn more, but no way in hell would your family let that happen. Over their dead bodies. Supervillains are eager to find out what your weakness is, if you even have one, but the villains are also a little terrified of you since they usually rely so heavily on Kryptonite and don’t really have a plan B yet for taking you down specifically without it.
4. In Superman II, Clark/Kal-El is shown to have the ability to give Lois a kiss that inexplicably erases all her memory of him ever being Superman. However this kiss works, what if he uses it on you to his advantage so he can further manipulate/gaslight you? Like a dark fic sorta thing where he can just devolve the relationship whenever he wants to go back by taking away whatever memories of yours he doesn’t like. He can’t put false memories in, but if you ever get too close to discovering the truth or finding out something about him he doesn’t want you to know, he can just kiss you and make it go away. He can alter your reality to a degree. In a softer note, he could use this ability to take away any painful or traumatic memories that you don’t want because they’re proving to be detrimental to your emotional, mental, or physical health and causing you tons of pain and anguish.
5. Platinum Kryptonite was used on you, an ordinary human, and now you have powers permanently and can’t get rid of them. You tried to many times, but none of your attempts worked. Not even when you entered the crystal chamber that harnessed the rays of the red sun of Krypton in the Fortress of Solitude. Whether Clark/Kal-El used the platinum Kryptonite on you because he’s soft!dark/dark and wanted you to be more like him under some delusion of being able to keep you with him forever by making you an outcast among the humans, or you were experimented on by a villain, either way, Clark/Kal-El may be the only person who can help you. The only person you can go to. But even with powers, you’re not as powerful as he is. You’ll never match the power or strength of a full-blooded Kryptonian.
6. Lilo and Stitch inspired: You went to the pet store to pick out a new friend, but when you went to the kennel in the back, there were no animals in there. It was so empty you could hear your voice echoing. Unbeknownst to you, all the other dogs were cowering above you, clinging to the top of the cages or the support beams of the roof. Then you turned around and suddenly, there was a white dog sitting at attention! You weren’t sure if he was a Labrador Retriever, a plain white Dalmatian, or a White Shepherd, but he was a handsome boy.
“Uh…hi.”
Then he started to levitate in the air! Wow!! A flying dog!! You were so amazed you didn’t even care about the melted kennel you passed by, even though the metal was still sizzling. That must’ve been where he escaped from.
“Oh yes, mhm, all our dogs are adoptable. EXCEPT THAT ONE! This one was dead this morning!”
“It was dead this morning?”
“Well, we thought it was dead. It was hit by a truck!”
“I like him! C’mere, boy!”
“Wouldn’t you like a different dog? We have better dogs, dear.”
“Not better than him! He can fly!”
“Dogs can’t fly.”
“He did.”
“Does it have to be this dog?”
“Yes, he’s good. I can tell.”
“You’ll have to think of a name for him.”
“His name is…Skip.”
“No, that’s not a real name…in…Iceland…but here it’s a good name! Skip it is. And there’s a two dollar license fee.”
And that’s how you got your new best friend! He had been living with you for months and you loved him so much! He was the best boy! The bestest boy! He was very smart, learned all these cool tricks and commands with ease. You had some accidents involving his heat vision or flying, but nothing major! Nothing was broken or damaged that couldn’t be fixed or replaced. And hey, he was invulnerable to most things and had accelerated healing abilities, so you didn’t need to worry about vet bills! You were so happy, but suddenly Superman showed up on your doorstep asking you to give him his dog, Krypto, back. He would’ve come for him sooner, but he was sorta…dead. What??? It’s a long story. Too long. He’s very grateful to you for taking good care of him and keeping him safe while he was dead, but now he wants him back. But…but he’s your dog! And his name is Skip! You adopted him, you named him, you have a stamped certificate proving you own him, he has a shiny new license he proudly wears around his neck with the name you gave him, and you’ve been giving him love and treats and walks for all this time. You’ve grown attached, and it looks like…Krypto? (Such an odd name after you’ve been calling him Skip for so long) has too because, despite his excitement at seeing Superman, which proves to you Superman is telling the truth (he always tells the truth), he still whines and stubbornly refuses to move away from you when his master whistles and tries to command him to come. He wraps his tail around you and looks at you with those big puppy eyes of his. Well…shit. What are you and Superman supposed to do now? Share the dog?
7. You’re Bucky Barnes’ sister and are put on cat-sitting and house-sitting duty while your brother is on a mission. You love Alpine and she loves you just as much as your brother. Your boyfriend, Clark, who you know is Superman, comes over with his dog, Krypto. You were a little nervous about them meeting at first because Krypto is a super dog and Alpine is just an ordinary house cat, but they become instant best friends once they get the chance to sniff each other and check each other’s vibe and pass the vibe check. Two sweet babies with white fur ready to play together and fight crime! Alpine is just a normal cat, but you and Clark like to joke that in her head she’s a superhero. She’s not so much startled by Krypto flying and shooting lasers from his eyes, just confused and curious like “What the heck? How are you doing that? Weirdo.” She clings to his back as he flies around, but enjoys it. She likes being tall. You send video of the shenanigans to your brother knowing that he’s gonna run his hand over his face exasperatingly with a smile on his face. But it’s cute, dammit!! And hey, Kryto’s laser eyes didn’t set the curtains on fire this time!
8. 101 Dalmatians inspired: You and Clark Kent meet in a dog park when his dog, Krypto, plays with your female dog. Unbeknownst to you, he’s Superman/Kal-El, the last son of Krypton and an alien, and Krypto is a super dog. Clark has a nifty piece of technology installed in one of his dog’s collars, something to neutralize all his superpowers. (Maybe even Krypto has an alternate common dog name so it’s really convincing just how Average and Mundane both Clark and his dog are). Your dog and Krypto seem to be attached at the hip, only playing and spending time with each other from the moment they meet. They’re both sad when you and Clark part ways. Every subsequent time you meet at the dog park, your dogs end up playing matchmakers between you and Clark. Krypto purposely pulls Clark towards you then wraps his leash around yours and Clark’s knees and lower legs, which tangles you together and causes you to bump into each other’s chests. You put your hands on Clark’s chest to push yourself away from him, but that doesn’t help much and you both end up losing your footing and stumbling. Your dog tries to save you by grabbing the back of your shirt with her teeth, but that only causes your shirt to tear as you fall together in a nearby pond or lake. Krypto feels bad and sheepishly grabs your purse for you with what’s his attempt at a smile, but Clark gives him a look as he takes it from the dog’s teeth and wraps his coat around your shoulders before handing it to you. Not that it helps since it’s just as soaked as the rest of you. You note that Clark’s glasses are all fogged up from the water. You both take out handkerchiefs at the same time, but share a laugh when you realize they’re also soaked. Clark invites you to come back to his place to dry off and have dinner with him as a form of apology for his dog’s behavior. He has some clothes you can borrow. You accept. Krypto goes from being sad and embarrassed to one happy boy!! His plan worked!! He shares a loving look with your dog. About a year and a half later, you and Clark have been dating for a while and your dog is pregnant. The puppies are so cute but then one starts flying while another shoots tiny red lasers out of its eyes. Uh oh. Guess Clark has no choice but to reveal to you his identity as Kal-El/Superman and Krypto’s identity as a Superdog.
9. Suddenly and randomly remembered Christopher Reeve played the Prince in Faerie Tale Theatre’s Sleeping Beauty so going back to the magical Superman kiss thing, what about an AU where Clark/Kal-El is a Prince, but you don’t know this because he and his squire switch and pretend to be the other, or you only know him as Clark Kent? He comes to earth in search of a bride, not because he needs a queen to rule with him (Krypton has been destroyed, so there’s nothing and nobody to rule over anymore), but because, as an alien, time works differently for him and his lifespan is much longer than that of a normal human’s. He wants a companion, and has the technology or other means to make the human of his choosing have an extended lifespan like his. Maybe you’re just an ordinary human who doesn’t know Clark is Superman or maybe you’re an alien princess that’s the last of your kind from a different planet that was also destroyed. (Though, are you and Kal-El still technically royalty even if there’s no planet to sovereign over?) Maybe instead of a literal sleep spell, you’re the victim of a spell/brainwashing a supervillain put on you similar to Bucky when he was the Winter Soldier. Instead of making you forget, Kal-El’s kiss helps you to “wake up” and remember who you are, and who he is to you.
OR
You’re Princess of Asgard and Loki and Thor’s beloved sister (Whether you’re Loki’s biological sister and half-Jotun or Thor’s biological sister is up to you). Whether or not you know this and are raised in Asgard from birth, or are whisked away to Midgard for your safety and raised as a human after a sleeping death curse gets placed on you when you’re a baby, is up to you.
For a platonic version, maybe you’re coincidentally found by Martha and Jonathan Kent around the same time they found Clark, so you’re raised as his sister but you both realize you have great powers, though they’re very different. You come with Clark to the North Pole but, if you’re half-Jotun, you turn blue, your eyes become red, and don’t get cold. You ask Jor-El who you are. Possessing a vast knowledge that spans thousands of years, he tells you that, based on your human-like stature but your blue skin, red eyes, and imperviousness to cold, you must be half-Jotun and come from a planet called Jotunheim, which still exists, though he doesn’t know who your parents are or if you have any living blood family. The curse hits before you fall in love with anyone, and Clark/Kal-El and even your brothers Thor and Loki believe you to be dead. Your adoptive brother teams up with Justice League and/or the Avengers to defeat the bad guys. At your funeral, Clark says goodbye by giving you a kiss on the forehead. You wake up in your casket, which scares the living hell out of everyone. Holy shit, they thought you were dead! The curse only said a kiss of true love would break it. It never said anything about the true love having to be romantic. Somehow along the way you realize Loki is your blood brother when he also turns blue with red eyes and you’re both ecstatic! You have three very cool and protective and loving brothers who are all willing to do almost anything for you.
For the romantic route, maybe you meet Clark Kent on Earth and fall in love but then the curse strikes and Clark believes you dead until your brothers show up and explain who you are and that supervillains somehow found where you are and are after you now. Asgard isn’t an option, but your brothers have to bring you someplace for your protection, so Clark takes them to the Fortress of Solitude in the North Pole. After the bad guys are defeated, Clark saves you with his kiss. (For spiciness, what if you have celebratory sex in the Fortress of Solitude? Clark/Kal-El has a massive bed in there. Even though the colors of the blankets makes it look like tin foil, a bed is a bed, and it can get very cold since it’s in the North Pole. Best way to warm up is to share body heat and exercise and what better way to do both than sex?) He later formally comes to Asgard and presents himself as Kal-El, the last son of Krypton, and kneels before your mother and father, Odin and Frigga, and asks them to let him marry you. This might be the moment you discover he’s Superman and an alien. If you’re aware of your Asgardian heritage from the beginning, maybe you’re deeply saddened and believe you and Clark can’t be together because you’ll live for thousands of years while he’ll live less than a century. Maybe you try to acquire one of Idunn’s golden apples for him, but then he reveals to you he’s a Kryptonian and has the same lifespan as you. Time was measured differently on Krypton than it is on earth.
Maybe there’s a bit of a soulmate AU within the AU, where you lucid dream that you’re in each other’s dreams or you lucid dream of each other.
“Oh, it is my dream. And yet more lovely than I dreamed. Had not the journey been so long, and the dangers so great, and the hazards so many, I…I wouldn’t have believed such beauty could crown my enterprise. And yet for all the time and the hazards and the peril, you’re too beautiful, you’re too pure, you’re too good. Do I dare to wake you to reality? And my dream become real. Or am I dreaming now?”
“What kept you?”
I love fairytale AUs so much and you can’t tell me Clark/Kal-El wouldn’t be fit the bill for it.

Sweet Visions of a flower
Summary: Syulang (OC), an orphaned girl after the destruction of Hometree. She is constanly reminded of this by her amputated left leg and constantly dreams of her deep trauma. Even when she gets adopted by Toruk Makto and his wife, who she resented for over six years before forgiving him.
Part 5 or ?
Tumblr media
Waking up on the mat in the Sully tent, there were multiple bodies around me. I opened my eyes to find Kiri on my right, Neteyam on my left, Lo’ak next to Neteyam and Tuk on top of me. I roused a bit from the warmth waking Neteyam whose face was right next to mine. Using my right hand, I booped his nose even saying it out loud eliciting a snort from him, waking the others who groaned in annoyance. Tuk’s little head raised up with a soft smile.
“Morning little Tuk Tuk,” I whispered to her.
“Morning, tsumuke,” she replied.
After everyone was wide awake, we began our chores. Cleaning up around the tent and eating some fruit. I looked around for Sempul and Sa’nu who were nowhere to be seen.
“They’re preparing an ambush,” Neteyam noticed me looking around, catching Lo’ak’s attention.
“Dude, Dad told us not to tell her,” Lo’ak interrupted.
“It's okay. Dad told me last night. He told me to stay here with you guys,” I reassured them.
“She means keeping an eye on you Lo’ak,” Neteyam chuckled, to which Lo’ak rolled his eyes.
“Children,” Uncle Pawk approached us in singsong, to which Lo’ak groaned out, “I'm here to keep an eye on you.”
“He means you Lo’ak,” Neteyam joked.
“Ha ha, very funny,” Lo’ak laughed out sarcastically. To which Neteyam and I laughed at his reaction.
That late afternoon as we ate, a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach grew. The anxiety of the situation was eating away at me, no one seemed to notice my restlessness luckily. I didn't have any strange visions during my sleep so I wondered if anything had changed. What is going to happen now? Will the ambush be successful? Will anyone get injured? Will anyone die? These were all the thoughts racing through my mind. After we finished eating, I cleaned up with Pawk, who decided to stay with the young ones as I went to wash the pot and bowls. The bad feeling grew as I tapped my foot in anxiety, a nervous gut feeling urging me to go to the old shack, even though we were told to stay at High Camp. There was no one around me, so I decided to silently slip away just for a moment. Just to make sure that everyone was safe.
Checking that I had at least a weapon in Lo’a’s pack, I climbed onto her back, connecting my queue and headed toward the abandoned shack. When we were nearing, I could hear the voices of Jake with enhanced hearing making commands to the warriors. I could see him standing in the clearing with the enhanced sight and we stopped. I sighed in relief that he was still alive but the strange feeling persisted. I waited a distance away listening to their plans. Petting behind Lo’a’s ear she purred a little. I urged her forward to the spot I was at in the dream, a mile east. It was roughly around the same time in my vision and right on cue they came into view. I could hear them talk about the same things from my vision, I looked toward the shack, they were hiding, silent, waiting. The group of intruders entered the clearing. Speaking amongst each other, they turned away holding strange devices in their hands. Then shouts and yells pierced the air. The sound of strange weapons firing into the bushes, I looked around into the chaos. Urging Lo’a forward I could hear a Na’vi who seemed to be the leader yell out.
“There you are, Sully!” He raised his gun shooting at Jake, as he evaded the raining bullets. My head was struck by a vision, the intruder shot Jake's leg causing him to fall. Having difficulty getting up the intruder raised his weapon shooting Jake in the head. My eyes opened in fear and shock as a rage filled my stomach, Lo’a feeling my rage charged forward at the man. Mine and her rage roared out. The intruder shot Jake in the leg who yelled out in pain, and Lo’a leapt at the strange Na’vi pinning him to the ground, roaring furiously at him. Sliding off my thanator I ran to Jake who grit his teeth. I pulled him up as he yelled out in pain.
“You shouldn’t be here!” he yelled over the chaos.
“You would’ve been dead if I weren’t!” I seethed. The chaos soon died down as clan members managed to separate the weapons from the demons, forcing them to kneel with their hands on their heads. I went over to Lo’a who managed to tear the weapon from the trespasser knocking it away from him, growling lowly at him. Jake stumbled to my side, and gestured for me to get Lo’a to back off. I connected my queue to calm her down, slowly removing her grip of the Demon below her. The stranger chuckled darkly, as I could finally see his face.
“Quaritch,” Jake simply stated.

Prompt - Fallenhalo, engagement
Okay, this may not have been quite what you meant by "engagement", but this idea hit me hard and fast and I just had to go with it. I hope you still like it 💙💙
/////
Engagement - Twitch!Streamer Ava au
"I'm just asking you to think about it, Lil."
"No, Ava."
Ava pouted from her gaming chair, staring at her girlfriend sitting stiff-backed at her work desk.  Their apartment wasn’t small, but it wasn’t huge either, and it required certain compromises on space, like combining both of their offices into one room.  Or rather, combining Lilith’s office with Ava’s streaming space, an arrangement that seemed to require more care and coordination than any other aspect of their relationship.
Lilith kept her back turned to Ava, ostensibly ignoring her, while her fingers clacked away across her keyboard. Unfortunate, but Ava was not above turning to dirty tactics to get her attention.  She left her chair, setting it rolling in a slow circle, and crept up behind the taller girl as quietly as she could.  When she was in striking distance, she wrapped her arms tightly around Lilith, being careful to press her tits into her muscular bicep.  Lilith doubtless knew she was coming, but she did nothing more than sigh and lean back from the desk, allowing herself to be held hostage in Ava’s embrace.
“Pleeeeeeeaase,” Ava begged, smushing her chest harder against Lilith’s side, earning a half-hearted glare for her troubles.
“I am not appearing on your streams, Ava,” she said stubbornly, her perfectly shaped lips forming a tight, unyielding line.
“But it could help my channel out massively, Lil!” Ava pleaded.  “It would hugely increase my viewer engagement, I just know it!”
“If you can’t keep your viewers sufficiently engaged on your own, then I fail to see how that’s my problem.”  It was a low blow, one that Lilith seemed to regret as soon as the words left her mouth, but Ava was too single-minded right now to care.
“My subscribers keep asking me about my super hot girlfriend,” she persisted.  “After they heard you talking in my charity stream last month, they’ve been asking if you’ll ever sit in for another one.”
“Shouldn’t their attention have gone more toward the charity they were there to support?”
Ava shrugged.  “I dunno, babe.  All I know is that you’re a big part of how I got 1,000 subs this week alone.”
Lilith huffed, aggravated but notably softening the longer Ava pressed against her.  “What would I even do?  You know I don’t do that sort of thing.”
“That sort of thing?” Ava repeated, pretending to be offended.  “It’s just gaming, Lil.  It’s really not that hard.  Hell, if I can do it with my messed up fingers, then you can do it.”  By “messed up fingers”, Ava was referring to her neuropathy, a condition that had haunted her ever since the car accident that left paralyzed and an orphan.  She had been adopted as a teenager by the brilliant inventor, Jillian Salvius, who paid for her to get spinal reconstruction that restored her mobility and sensation, but left her with chronic pain and intermittent numbness as a result.  Gaming had been Ava’s outlet for practicing her dexterity after surgery, and she was quick to fall in love with streaming and chatting with other people as she played.  While she still struggled sometimes, her dedication and charm had slowly but surely garnered attention for her tiny twitch channel, leading to a steady climb in viewership until she was able to host her first charity stream five weeks ago, the same one Lilith had "appeared" in, albeit in voice only.
Lilith still looked skeptical, so Ava retreated momentarily to adjust her tactics.  “You could do something super chill,” she suggested.  “There are plenty of games that don’t really require ‘gamer skills’ to play.”
“And how are you so sure your viewers would even want to see me playing a game?  They’re there to see you play them.”
Ava waved away her concerns.  “They can see me play on any of my streams.  But if you appeared on one, that would be something fresh, something novel.  It would get them excited!”  She leaned in close to kiss Lilith on the cheek.  “Please, baby,” she whispered against her pink-hued skin.  “Just one stream.  If you don’t like it, we’ll never do it again, and I’ll tell everyone to stop asking about you.”
For all that Lilith was the most terrifying civil court attorney in the city, she was ultimately putty in her tiny girlfriend’s hands.  Sighing heavily, she shut her eyes briefly and rested her head against the back of her chair.  “Fine.”
“Really?”  The way Ava perked up like a puppy getting a new toy was both endearing and unsettling.
“Yes, I suppose.  One stream.”
“Yes!” Ava squealed, bouncing slightly with Lilith still in her arms.  “Yes, baby, thank you!  This will be great, you’ll see!”
Lilith grumbled toothlessly in the face of her exuberance.  “But I get to decide what game it is before I play.”
Ava beamed.  “Of course, babe!  I think I know just the one.  Have I ever told you about Animal Crossing?”

guys. guys. guys.
100yr war mako. guys.
okay so I know I’m already going insane about the dadamon au but. but hear me out. and this one is completely of my own design and I don’t think I’ve actually seen anything else on this (if you have pls pls pls pls send links) but there’s so much I could do with mako in the atla timeline because he’s a mixed kid.
now, I also need to account for how mako looks in my head (completely oc-ified). he’s way more ek the way I imagine him (he and bolin are closer in features, in short, but this post has me being stupid more comprehensively), darker skin, central heterochromatic green/gold eyes, curved nose, etc. for context the ek look in my head is kind of blasian? it’s not exactly but for the sake of succinct imagery, yk.
okay so moving on to au info (under the cut)!
fire nation soldier:
—this mako is an amputee. I haven’t decided which limb(s) but he is missing at least one is.
—he joined the army for the money, but given his appearance could only join closer to the eclipse and is treated like shit
—hates his firebending and the atrocities he has to commit with it to afford to eat
—mother was a fn deserter who left for ek father, hid in ba sing se for a few years where mako n bolin were born and raised, before oppressive class system and denial of war became too much and they moved out to ek town bordering fn territory (mako-5, bolin-3). they lived alright for a few more years, before naoki was recognized and she n san were killed. orphanism.
—mako joined the army at 13, the enlistment age being 16. passed himself off as a really scrawny 16yo. enlistments knew but disliked ‘half-breeds’ and hoped the front lines would just take care of him for them.
—he has to get a tattoo to signify he is not of pure fn blood,,, ohhh the angst potential,,,
—canon starts when he’s almost 13, as it has to get close enough to eclipse for him to join at 13. he only worked about a year in the army by the time canon ends and zuko becomes firelord. as a concession of losing, fn’s army is reduced greatly. zuko’s first choice is to remove child soldiers, esp the kids pretending to be 16. he has a program, but mako ofc slips through the cracks.
—traumatized 13/14yo amputee war veteran struggles to regain normal human behavior with worried brother: the saga, basically.
—maybe throw in a little found family/adoption, as a treat
Im so madly in love w this au btw.
joins the gaang (good start):
—there are two versions of 100yr war mako joining the gaang I have, and this is the happier one. almost no one dies! besides like. his parents. it’s for character development mako, sorry. so basically the plot is that the gaang is in the fire nation for the eclipse, but instead of mako joining the army then, they find scraggly street orphan and decide to drag him and happy brother along.
—to make this better, they originally think he and bolin are fully ek, hiding in the fire nation, and that mako is a nonbender (he still hates his fire) but then they’re like BAM we’re actually the children of a deserter and her ek boyfriend! they’re both dead.
—womp womp, teach me firebending mako!!
—and to literally no one’s surprise, his answer is an enthusiastic shove that stupid idea right back up your
—eclipse fails, but mako and azula freak each other out by being reallllyy similar.
—zuko joins; mako is also on toph’s side and bolin is content to follow his brother (reminder he is 11 at this point, mako is 13) because mako knows (as most fn citizens do) about the story of his scar and would die from guilt if he were to fight and scar the prince with fire again. (he has lightning scars and stuff too from early on after being orphaned, being without control of his fire)
—also mako still knows how to lightningbend, in all the 100yr war verses. Ik it’s supposed to be a royal family exclusive in atla, but either mako encountered iroh on the road and picked it up quickly or he had another version of zolt to teach him/give him the push to figure it out himself. GASP mako learning lightning from the dragons/sun warriors after going to the ruins for a safe place w bolin,,,
—so zuko joins. remember how I said mako/azula were still mirror images here? yeah zuko kinda gets freaked out by the 13yo who’s realllyy similar to his sister.
—mako is super awkward around him, still kind of treating him like he’s a prince (running away). zuko misinterprets this as mako hating him. after mr prince loses his bending, what does this mean? mako gets to tag along on dragon field trip!!
—in line w mako learning lightning from dragons previously, he’s able to navigate super easily into the city, but leaves aang and zuko behind by accident in the process. they do the little dragon dance and mako is the one to find them (with sun warrior supervision, because they don’t want the baby dragon to die encountering someone he didn’t expect) and they are accepted significantly more easily.
—mako watches them meet the masters with stifled amusement. he’s not worried; he knows they’re pure of heart.
—speedrunning everything up to the comet with fluffy gaang relationships, mako tries to blow the guy up back (it does not work)
—day of the comet, mako stays glued to bolin. he’s offered the chance to sit out the attack, they can pull through in units of two (+aang) and he almost accepts. but he’s thirteen, a year older than the inventor of metalbending and the avatar. bolin is a year younger, and takes importance, but-but he needs to do something. he’s been by their side a quarter of what katara and sokka have been, and he doesn’t want to have been dead weight. he joins aang, able to be present after the battle if medical help or a quick escape are needed, and enhanced as a firebender so he’s good enough to fight a bit.
—aang’s energy is being swallowed and mako doesn’t understand what’s happening but he knows it’s not good. he goes running up to aang, bolin at his side, ready to pull the avatar away and save them both. aang wins in the end, and ozai’s bending is gone.
—the rest of the gaang lands, the weakened ozai is still restrained, but the looks of disgust aimed at him from not only his traitor spawn but two peasant half-breeds gives him enough rage to spit threats at them all, a promise that all of them, starting with the little green-eyed brat (bo) will be picked off and tortured to extermination by his sympathizers.
—mako, standing on business as usual, doesn’t hesitate. he relishes in the split second of terror in ozai’s eyes as he realizes his special, hoarded technique, lightning, is being used against him, and he is powerless to stop it, before he’s struck. toph’s earth bounds shatter at the bolstered impact, but it doesn’t matter as the former phoenix king falls lifelessly to the ground. mako’s eyes are hard and cold. he’s thirteen. he is not a stranger to doing what needs to be done, and bolin comes first. who will sympathize with a dead man?
—the end :3
this one is probably one of my favorite 100yr war versions
joins the gaang (bad start):
—this one is probably marginally more tragic. mako’s start towards the gaang is bolin’s death. he died in a night robbery from older firebenders; mako was powerless to stop them, and they didn’t care enough to stop themselves. mako didn’t bother saving up for another travel pack or enough food and clothes to fill it again. he regrets ever having been so foolish as to think that was something he could keep.
—he ends up at the factory that’s polluting the village’s river in the painted lady ep. he works at the factory but lives in the village, just as desolate as the rest (though, again, decidedly more ek-looking).
—based off their harshness upon finding out their savior was katara, the village people don’t take too well to mako either, considering he’s both mixed and works at the factory. when katara is outed (and mako is packing up, because they just lost him his job), he gets pushed to the front with her and met with the same scornful glares.
—sokka defends his sister (common sokka w) and strange, scrawny child. the village distinctly apologizes more to katara as mako gives them all a stink eye.
—he helps the gaang clean out the river as thanks by burning the muck and disposing of the smoke.
—he goes to leave at the same time as them, aang notices, and offers a ride (to sokka’s slight chagrin-he could kiss his schedule goodbye officially now.) mako agrees, thinking he’ll fall off the bison if he gets lucky (yk, and other regular very normal 12yo thoughts)
—a ride turns into ‘oh just stop here with us! we don’t mind sharing dinner, there’s extra!’ and that turns into ‘it’s way too rainy to go on your own, we can just camp together another night!’ which becomes ‘where are you going? if you don’t know, you can just hit a few more stops with us.’ and eventually they just stop making excuses because, if mako is honest with himself, he’s totally gotten attached. they all know he’s not leaving. he’s smiled, laughed, felt joy for the first time in two years, the two years since bolin was killed.
—gaang shenanigans ensue. mako and toph get along like a house on fire, because they’re both grimy, angry, shithead 12yos absolutely out for blood. mako and aang develop telepathic communication within two weeks because mako can’t communicate normally and aang tries so hard to understand that he actually does. they’re bsfs.
—mako is decidedly reckless with his life and katara gets to practice her healing even more regularly than in canon. she’s not too pleased. sokka thinks mako is the best ever (grumpy mini-me) and wants to wrap him in furs and tuck him away from the dangers of the war (he calls mako cute one time(!) and gets set on fire for it)
—zuko and mako bond over scars (lightning+fire to the face) and zuko sibling-izes mako cuz azula parallels
—sozin’s comet goes about the same, but katara insists mako comes with her and zuko so she can keep an eye on him, which actually saves zuko from the lightning scar bcs zuko taught mako how 2 redirect‼️‼️
—I don’t have too much on this au because my brain is being consumed by the next one and thinking too hard abt this one upsets me greatly. also so much of mako’s personality in canon is centered around bolin (oh look that’s an upcoming post too) that it’s difficult to imagine him as more than a shell of a person without him.
dead:
—okay so this one is technically atla and tlok. will elaborate later.
—mako dies with his mother and father (naoki is still a deserter here) but bolin survives on his own. he mourns his brother, but a nice earth kingdom family adopts him, mistaking him for a full ek earthbender, which he doesn’t correct. bolin eventually moves on with his life, scraping by in the tail end of the war. these events take place ~ten years before atla canon, so bolin is 16 by b1 and 17 when the gaang reaches the earth kingdom. mako is eight and dead. for the record.
—so how does a dead kid become part of canon? well, I’ll be making a post about how I think afterlife and ghostly spirits work in the avatarverse, but for the sake of conciseness, the dead who have ‘unfinished business’ become spirits that can interact with the human world at will, because they never quite “crossed over.” mako, not knowing if bolin will survive on his own, has ‘unfinished business’. however, this causes permanent spirithood, which is part of why it’s so rare. a soul has to be really upset to eternally subject themselves to that.
—so spirit-mako isn’t really mako anymore, he’s a guardian spirit of, let’s say, children fending for themselves. you know a group of children fending for themselves that’s pretty relevant in atla. yeah. so he ends up unable to find bolin, because bolin is being taken care of. he’s instead drawn to the southern water tribe, where dozens of kids’ parents traveled off to war.
—he doesn’t reveal himself at all, just preventing little accidents for the most part. the swt nicknames him veiti, deigning him their guardian spirit. he lost most of himself as mako, all that’s really left is a bit of snark left for other spirits and fondness for his brother.
—he follows katara and sokka as they find aang, drawn to the weight of another lonely boy. aang feels something off, lingering in the air around the water siblings, from the start, but doesn’t mention it. veiti doesn’t stop the flare from firing because he knows someone needs to follow it, needs to come.
—zuko arrives. veiti is confused by him, but the scar on his face bears so much weight. they feel familiar to veiti, so much so that the tundra fills with the weeping of a spirit. this actually scares off zuko’s ship before an escalated confrontation (aang going w zuko) happens, so it works out well in the end.
—when katara and sokka follow aang away from the swt, veiti decides he wants (he hasn’t wanted in a while now) to follow them. but he can’t just abandon the tribe that’s come to rely on his protection, even going as far as to offer the occasional fish, so he decides to temporarily possess a vessel. other spirits have told him he should be able to take a human form, but he hasn’t figured that out yet. he possesses a little otter penguin, and tells a mildly disturbed kanna that he is veiti, and will be joining the siblings and avatar to protect them there. he tries to give a spirit blessing on his way, but he’s not sure if it works.
—the wails of a spirit’s grief fill the echoing halls of the deserted air temple along with aang’s rage, and he hopes the avatar can feel the comforting weight of a fellow mourner draped over him when katara talks him down. veiti feels decidedly uneasy (seen) with the statues of past avatars, and is relieved when momo is found and they all leave.
—he clings to aang as he rides the unagi, bats away too-sharp too-close fans when the kyoshi warriors get too aggressive. he nearly smacks sokka upside the head, physical form or not, when he starts blabbering about the male warriors that don’t exist. that one behavior of his had always ticked veiti off, but he tried to be understanding with sokka’s lack of a… well, mother.
—as the gaang experiences the mundanity of kyoshi island, veiti finds himself regaining some sense of… something he lost. he remembers, seeing the face of a boy on the island, that the brother he longed to see again was named bolin. he remembered that he was eight, in human years. he couldn’t gather any more than that, hard as he tried.
—omashu was hell for veiti, the spirit confused as to if he should be defending despite the lack of aggression from the king, and what he should do if he needs to step in. aang recognizes his friend, however, and veiti allows himself a break from them as they travel to an ek mining town. he hovers over zuko in this time, observing him and his interactions with his uncle (what is an uncle, veiti isn’t quite sure. they didn’t have those in the swt)
—zuko finding katara’s necklace on the brig makes veiti rush back to the gaang, relieved to find them all in tact in a different town. however, this town is dealing with spirit meddling, which veiti approaches with some annoyance. he tries to get sokka back, asking the other spirits, but he’s told hei bai isn’t too hospitable. aang enters the spirit world, and catches a glance of a mangled boy around eight who looks a mix of fn and ek. he’s conversing with the spirits casually, which is aang’s clue he wasn’t taken from the village as well. he wants to call the boy over, but has more pressing matters to deal with. hei bai is pacified, and everyone is returned.
—veiti travels with them to the fn, despite everything in him yelling to run the other way. the sages are dangerous, the evil named zhao is far too powerful there, and the children aren’t safe, tied up, beyond his protection. he finds the fire bows to him, and that is another thing veiti recalls; he is a firebender. no harm comes to zuko or katara or sokka when roku’s fury is released through aang, despite veiti’s primal terror when roku’s gaze locks on him. buried deep inside, aang wonders if he is seeing the same boy from hei bai’s forest.
—the scroll is stolen. veiti is, again, halfway to a heart attack (can spirits have heart attacks?) working himself into a panic when katara is captured by the pirates. zuko becomes something else for him to worry about, katara’s necklace in hand. however, apart from numerous last minute saves from slicing blades, veiti barely has to do anything as the situation works itself out.
—veiti is again torn as the gaang meets jet. there’s distant wailing in the forest all the days they stay with jet (and aang recognizes it, the same as in the temple and the tundra because it was from that mangled little boy he keeps seeing. maybe sokka is right, something is off about jet. don’t you hear that, katara?). jet is a lost child, but jet is malicious as well. veiti can’t understand if jet is to protect or harm or defend and it’s making him crazy.
—veiti feels himself grow absent for a while, he resurfaces when aang is captured, choosing to dance through the arrows of the yuyan as they miraculously miss the blue spirit (zuko was to protect, veiti had a feeling) and his ‘captive’, the avatar. the divide between katara, sokka, and aang is one they must fix themselves. the scars on katara’s hands from the terrible lessons of the deserter (he had known a deserter. a mother, his mother. if only he could recall her name.)
—another temple echoes with a spirit’s tears as they visit the northern temple with its gadgets and gears. teo is a bright boy, veiti knows he will fly far with his strange inventions. the nwt is a destination veiti abhors. he finds pakku agitating, and far too reminiscent of sokka previous kyoshi island. the siege by the evil called zhao (veiti wants him gone. veiti can make him gone.) is terrible. he burns tui, and mako runs to her side in childish worry, asking la if he can in some way help. he warms her with licking flames that don’t burn (because he is a firebender, he knows now) and infuses what little of himself he can give. it hurts, almost, and la’s weeping joins his in the oasis.
—it is by design that zhao does not take zuko’s hand.
—yue will give herself to tui, la tells him. but what if yue? he asks. he knows there cannot be a life handed over and a life kept. his fire has warmed tui, but it will not fix her. they will share the burden, la tells him. yue will lend tui the strength tui lent her, just as veiti did, and tui will recover in time. yue will be weakened, but she too will recover. as aang is returned, mako allows himself to jump up and cling to his frame. he is shocked to feel the ghost of a hug reciprocated. aang’s eyes search around veiti, as though aware of his presence but unsure where his eyes should land. veiti allows himself to beam.
—the earth kingdom general seeks to take advantage of aang in a way that greatly discomforts them both. he doesn’t revere the spirits the way he should. veiti makes sure his head gets stuck very firmly in a ditch once the children are safely away, and leaves them to their devices for a bit to make sure the general does not try such foolish exploitation again. he leaves them unattended for a while, not feeling a tug towards them as he normally would in danger. he drifts back around the time aang is being attacked for being the avatar, and it greatly unnerves him. why should he be scorned for being their savior? kyoshi makes an appearance much like roku did. and just as he did with roku, veiti pretends her all seeing eyes do not, for the briefest moment, settle on him. something of being perceived is far too disquieting for him in his state.
—veiti is greatly pleased when the blind bandit joins them. she has the burden of an unguided child, despite having parents. he doesn’t imagine them to be good ones.
—the girl with eyes like his (that’s another thing he remembers. his eyes—his human form has those—are gold, flecked with green. was deserter-mother gold-green, too?) hurtshurtshurts in her soul and in her fire. veiti cries at the too familiar violence, echoes of something that had terrified him once. he isn’t quite sure what, but his sniffles fill the air all the same. veiti cried sparsely in the south, sparing his tears for death and severe injury, but so many things in the rest of the world make him ache in a way he can through no other method express.
—veiti dislikes the heavy presence of the spirit in the library. he fuels toph’s veins with his own fire when her grip slips and somehow, he is enough to let her split her attention; the foul benders who reek of thieves are held up until aang can return, incensed at the muzzle on his bison.
—ba sing se is hell. veiti needs to find someone. he’s so close, he knows, but he doesn’t understand who he needs to find. his senses are torn between protecting the avatar and searching for someone he isn’t sure of.
—he parts ways with the gaang, and he looks. he searches all of ba sing se and the surrounding towns until he finds a small family of five. two parents, though the mother is scarred by fire, and three children. the oldest is a young adult, a boy named yuyi. the youngest is a girl named meiying. and the other boy has green eyes flecked with gold (gold-green, green-gold) and his name is bolin. veiti knows this is who he has been searching for. the world’s tug suddenly applies to him, and he feels his feet touch the wooden floor as he looks up instead of down at the family’s dinner. the creaks alert them to his sudden presence, and bolin’s (brother!) eyes widen, filling with tears. veiti’s voice is high pitched (he is eight in human years, he remembers) and warbles when he asks for confirmation that bolin is his brother. his body stings like bad fire when he is wrapped in a careful embrace, but a tentative smile curls his lips all the same. he asks bolin his name. apparently, veiti’s name is mako. veiti tells bolin that he is called veiti, and asks which name is better. bolin thinks they’re both nice, so mako decides he will use both.
—something tugs desperately for his help (aang needs help) so veiti tells bolin he needs to go, he needs to help. he promises he’ll always look after bolin and his family, and thanks his brother for reminding him of his name. he’ll miss his brother and his new family lots, he says, but they’ll be okay with his spirit blessing. he’s gotten better at those, he promises. with a smile and a wave, the little boy is in veiti’s form once more.
—aang is-was dead. mako wishes so terribly he has been there. he can do lightning, too, another spirit showed him how while he was searching. he could’ve helped. but katara is healing aang with the special water from the oasis. veiti wonders how she’s doing. he thinks about tui being hurt so badly and yue being weakened and aang being dead and mako misses his brother already and sobs fill the clear night air. the sadness weighs too heavily for his spirit form to handle, so he drops into appa’s saddle in the form of a little boy warped by fire.
—aang’s friends are wary at first, but it’s hard to deny he’s a spirit given his arrival. mako finds he like talking to them rather than just watching over them, and katara and sokka’s faces when he tells them he is actually veiti are really funny. the only thing he doesn’t like is how they seem so careful around him. at first, he thinks it’s because they don’t want to be so close to a real spirit rather than a half-spirit like the avatar, but he realizes it’s about how small he is when katara looks at him sad after he proudly announces he is eight human years old.
—aang wakes up and veiti is one of the first to greet, him, bouncing around in a mix of excitement and nervousness at the chance to meet him for real and have an actual conversation. he thinks aang has probably seen or heard him before, being the avatar, but they’ve never actually talked. aang tries to muster the energy to feel the same, but the feeling of failure drowns it out. mako retreats to his spirit form, upset, but understands he still needs to watch out for aang. he drags him to shore when the storm knocks him out, worriedly hovering until katara makes it on the scene.
—mako, as badly as he wants to, doesn’t go into a physical form with aang at the fire nation school. he thinks it would be a perfect chance for them to talk normally, as he’s been staying in his spiritual form since aang first woke. it’s not until they reach the village of the painted lady that he takes his human body again. the mood of the place is somber, but veiti cheerfully (foolishly) offers to try and talk to the painted lady for them. katara is all on board for this, and aang offers to tag along, but sokka is insistent that their schedule cannot take that dent.
—veiti goes to talk to the painted lady anyway. she’s very friendly, but she calls mako silly! she tells him he is to learn an important lesson from this; human affairs, like this, sort themselves out more often than not, and it is a spirit’s duty to meddle only when absolutely necessary. the gaang is there for a reason, and he should let them deal as necessary.
—the rest of b3 goes without much influence from mako. he tries to heed the painted lady’s advice and step back, even on the day of the black sun. human affairs, as they often do, sorted themselves out. however, he does tag along when zuko (who veiti is so happy to have. he was right!) and aang go to meet the firebending masters, because he is a firebender too! zuko doesn’t technically know about him, because katara is the one who introduced him to everyone else at the western air temple but she doesn’t like zuko, so he doesn’t show himself at all until aang and zuko go. he tells aang in secret that he’s going to stay behind to try and talk to ran and shaw, and not to worry when he doesn’t feel mako in the air. he’ll be back in no time!
—it’s on the boiling rock that mako shows himself to zuko, and it’s totally on accident! sokka was really stressing out, and veiti swears up and down that zuko was asleep, so he lets the world’s tug pull him down as human feet touch the ground. he tries to help sokka feel better, but it doesn’t really work because sokka got scared that he showed up out of nowhere and then zuko freaked out about the ‘little kid in a high security prison’. mako tried not to be offended, but eight human years isn’t a little kid! he’s basically an adult already! he’s as helpful as he can be with their escape plans, keeping zuko warm with his fire (and after he talked to ran and shaw, they taught him how to make it colorful!) in the cooler (what a terrible invention) and helping tug zuko back up into the cart when they get mr sokka and katara’s dad and suki with them and zuko battles gold-eyes sister. mr hakoda is kind of freaked out my veiti too, and he tries not to be upset, but sokka sees his eyes water and makes a whole huge deal out of it. and veiti is absolutely not pouting when he doesn’t talk to them the rest of the way back to the temple! he’s just recovering his strength cause zuko’s heavy.
—aang and katara are happy to see him in his body form again, and toph punches him which he’s pretty sure means she’s happy too. katara goes on a field trip with zuko this time, and he’s convinced to stay at the temple after zuko is told he tagged along with the last two. katara comes back not mad at zuko but neither of them are bloodstained so mako decides not to worry. then they go to ember island and see the terrible performance of their adventures by the theatre troupe there. veiti’s a little upset they know about the cabbage guy but not him, but he doesn’t mind too much.
—sozin’s comet comes, and mako knows that human affairs are to be dealt with by humans now. he’s still eight human years, but the time spent with aang has made him feel a LOT older. he tells them good luck, but he has to protect bolin and his family during the comet and he’ll see them later. and-he hesitates to make promises he might not be able to keep, but he tells them that if they really need it, they can call veiti and he will come. he stresses that it has to be the most important EVER because he has to make sure bolin’s okay.
—the cut off call from toph stirs a worry in his gut, but he is physically unable to part from his brother without a firm tug. but the comet passes, as do the fire nation forces, and mako returns to his friends (can he call them that?) to find them all mostly okay!
—the world continues on. veiti learns that eight human years is not, in fact, almost an adult, but he doesn’t grow farther than that despite how many years he lives, so he decides it’s adult enough. he, annoyingly, doesn’t ‘mature’ the same way the rest of his friends or his brother do, so he’s essentially an 8yo for the next 80 years.
—he spends a lot of that time watching the gaang and their kids growing up. he spends a lot of time w aang and katara’s kids on air temple island, especially kya. after he makes republic city his more regular haunt, he particularly fond of lin (who is an adult, at this point). none of the gaang kids see veiti much, but they all know about him from their parents. lin is the most often privy to his presence, kya second. he calls them ‘ms kya’ and ‘ms lin’ but everyone else is just their first name lmao 😭
—and then guess what happens (can you tell I’m getting tired. I’ve been writing this post for five hours straight and I literally had the atla episodes pulled up on my computer) aang dies aww :( and the new avatar is born!!!! she actually has parents and figures of guidance, so mako leaves her alone. but guess who he does chill with!? his grandnephew, bolin ii! family line goes like this: bolin marries an ek girl, they have kids. one of the kids’ names is san, after bolin’s late father. san finds himself a pretty fn girl named naoki, and wow, what a coincidence, huh? not that san ii is aware of it. they have one son, who is named bolin ii, after his grandfather. bolin ii is orphaned when he is 14, but toza is ushered by a mysterious force (dead mako) to find and take in earthbending child after a month or two at the orphanage cause no one wants older kids. or mixed kids.
—this post is actually so fucking long and it’s like ten o’clock at night rn (I’m gonna schedule this to post sometime tmr) so I’m just gonna summarize by saying mako tags along for tlok and freaks everyone out cause that’s what he is. a little freak. I am not rewriting an outline for four fucking season idc. spirit mako vs amon could be really interesting but I’ll just. make a separate post for that.
can you tell I hyperfixated so fucking hard on this au btw. ts has been in the fucking works in my brain for months now. I hate this stupid fucking orphan I need him to die immediately.

The Night and its Moon had the potential to be a good book. The synopsis on the back made it sound like something that would be right up my alley. Unfortunately, though, Piper C.J. took so many wrong turns. Everyone knows about the drama; I'm not going to rehash it again. All I want to say is I'm disappointed Piper didn't take the opportunity to re-publish as a second chance to fix all that was problematic in her book. She had a rare chance to go and do some severe reworking with an actual editor and didn't do it at all. I have the special edition copy of this book, and there were still so many errors and words that were utterly misused. At one point, 'aquatint' is used instead of 'acquaintance'.
The entirety of this book is so convoluted and so wordy. Piper tries to adopt the same lofty high fantasy prose seen in works like Tolkien's or C.S. Lewis and instead comes off as incredibly pretentious and melodramatic. She writes sentences in four rephrased ways, like she doesn't trust the reader to interpret things the way she wants. I honestly think this book could've used a very, very hefty developmental edit and several more drafts before it should've ever been published. I also think Piper needs new sensitivity readers because they did her so dirty.
So, The Night and its Moon is about two half-fae girls, Nox and Amaris. The book's first half takes place in a child-trafficking mill masquerading as an orphanage. Some children get adopted by families, but most are sold to brothels to be sex slaves or to people looking for 'virginal brides' or young boys to do child labor. This 'orphanage' is also associated with the church. A bishop comes once a month to inspect things, and if he finds a child with fae lineage, he'll take them, no questions asked, no money given. And therefore, Nox, the only POC in this orphanage and the Grey Matron's serving girl, is made to protect Amaris from him. Now, Nox is half-fae too, but for some reason, no one can tell that, yet they know Amaris is half-fae just by the sight of her. She is such an anomaly that they don't want to mar her perfect skin because they want to get the most money possible for her.
On the other hand, Nox is considered a trophy to the orphanage because she's the only POC there and is put on display before the bishop. After this ridiculous display, she runs to hide Amaris away, but they're discovered by some bullies who pick a fight with them. Amaris uses her magical whammy power on these bullies to make them disappear forever. This scene serves two purposes. To show Amaris’ power and for Nox to get whipped on behalf of the white girl. Nox has to hide Amaris and take the blame for the mess left behind in the wake of her fight, and the bishop is like, ‘alright, whip her’, and they do. No one stands up for Nox because they all know she has to take the blame, or they’ll find the super special white girl.
It’s almost like Piper tries to undo what she did to Nox by having her back heal entirely and there be no scars. But, like, girl, you still whipped your only POC (so far) to save your self-insert/plagiarized character.
Some years pass and the girls are finally on auction for the market day because Agnes says they’re selling children slower and slower, but she’s unwilling to buy more children. First of all. You could’ve sold Amaris and Nox earlier if you hadn’t been hiding them from everyone, but okay. Second of all. It’s technically an orphanage, is it not? Is purchasing children the only way Agnes can acquire them? Do parents not send their children there if they can’t take care of them? If the church funds this place, orphans are left there constantly; why aren’t they providing the mill with more children? All the adults come, and nobody picks Amaris or Nox, which is weird, considering their specialness is consistently shoved in our faces. It’s not until the brothel owner, Millicent, shows up to take two random girls that she notices Amaris and wants to acquire her. Nox naturally thinks this is the worst day of her life(let’s not think about the day she was whipped, I guess?), and Amaris uses her magic power to not go with Millicent until she’s had her period(why not use the power to NEVER go with her?). Millicent makes Amaris, whom I believe is 12 or 13 in this scene, get naked so she can be scoped for any imperfections. It’s super uncomfortable and creepy. And what’s even worse about it is that THIS is the catalyst that makes Nox realizes she’s in love with Amaris. She states that she always believed their relationship to be ‘a friendship’ until a sudden intimate love sprang out in her…but nothing has happened to trigger this sudden confession except for the fact that Amaris was just stripped naked in front of her so she could later be sold to a brothel. Am I the only one who sees something very off about this? There’s a line where Nox thinks that ‘when Amaris needed her most, she had failed her’ but like Nox…girl…you were whipped for her.
So the girls decide they’re going to run away together before Millicent can come to take Amaris. They start gathering knowledge and supplies, but we don’t get to hear about any of them. Amaris gets her period, and it’s the worst period ever because none of the matrons bothered to teach these girls about their bodies, and now all of the girls think Amaris is dying. Anywho, Nox and Amaris are primed to run away, and an injured assassin with a gravelly voice shows up( I wonder who he could be!), ruining their plans to escape, so they have to delay. Nox confesses her love to Amaris, and Amaris, oblivious, is like, ‘yeah, same!’
Millicent shows up early, and things go haywire Amaris ends up abandoning Nox to run off with the strange assassin who showed up the night before. She also mutilates herself so she will no longer be ‘perfect’ and gives herself the same scar that Ciri has in The Witcher. How odd. Nox is left behind and has to go to the brothel in Amaris’ place. How unsurprising that Nox gets shafted yet again.
So while Amaris runs off with not Geralt of Rivia and his horse Cobb aka not Roach, Nox is forced to work in a brothel. Amaris trains to become a Reever befriends the other Reevers, and generally has the time of her life, not thinking once about Nox save for a random wet dream and trying to bone her ‘brothers’, and in the meantime, Nox is miserable lonely and depressed. Her thoughts are constantly revolving around Amaris; all she can think about is getting back to her. She’s forced to have sex with men, repulsed at their touch, and thinks about women the whole time. Oh, I forgot that she’s also a succubus and steals men’s souls when she has sex with them. So far, the only female POC character has been a trophy item to be put on display, a whipping girl for our special white main, and now an enslaved succubus.
The whole second part of the story— ‘Ownership’- is a lot of exposition that I barely cared about. Amaris learns to become a Witcher/Reever but doesn’t learn much. She knows how to run and wield some weapons, I guess? But she doesn’t learn how to ride a horse or get real-world experience before she takes her vows. She doesn’t even know the proper terminology to refer to things. Amaris never learns to control her power when she has a full-blooded fae at her disposal who could’ve potentially taught her. She never learns how to use her gift of influence nor how to use her special sight, which proves to fuck her over later in this idiotic story.
In part three, Amaris finally leaves Uaimh Reev with zero experience on a quest I cannot even be sure of. Honestly, what the hell is the plot of this book? Amaris isn’t trying to find Nox like she clearly could care less about Nox. On the other hand, I’m pretty sure Nox just ran away from the brothel on her hunt for Amaris. At least this girl is making some moves. I wouldn't say I like her chapters because they feel gross, exploitative, and racist, but I like her more as a character than Amaris. Amaris is the perfect speshul gurl and can’t be blamed for anything. She comes across some dark fae right, and it just so happens that they’re also POC like Nox (because they all have bronze skin in that part of the country, apparently), and their fucking powers are due to NIGHT LIFE (and Nox is now a lady and a creature of the night) and they have nocturnal eyes and like…?? It's constantly referred to how Amaris has terrible night vision too like to try and shove in her face that she's NOT DARK FAE, BUT NOX IS. I’m sorry, Piper, baby. I do not believe for one second that you had a sensitivity reader go over this book. I don’t. I do not. I do not. I do not. I do not. Anywho. Ash and Malik see these dark fae as demons and immediately want to kill them, so Amaris uses magic to make them go elsewhere. How can she CONTROL IT??? Hmmmmm? (Sorry, I’m starting to lose my mind)
I started just screaming at Amaris by this point because she was like, ‘UGH, IT’S NOT MY FAULT. I DID NOTHING WRONG; IT’S ALL THESE DARK FAE’S FAULT BECAUSE I AM BLAMELESS!!!!’ I want to fight her so badly. When the fae find out she’s a reever, and they’re all like, GASP, I TOO KNEW A REEVER, and she’s immediately like, ‘oh, was his hair red? Yeah, that’s Ash’s dad.’ I was about to give up on this bullshit for the third time. But I persevered. She throws a fit that Gadriel and Zaccai keep calling her a witch but then continues disrespecting them by calling them demons.
Amaris never like talks to anyone. Legit, all she had to do when Ash was being all douchey and prejudiced about her having power was say that she was a half-fae just like he was, and that would shut his ass up. But she like would rather wallow in self-pity and constantly whine in super dramatic prose. And then she feels so sorry for herself because her friends are mad at her, and she can’t stand rejection(Piper’s self inserting a little too hard here) that she shows up to Ash’s room in nothing but a towel and then gets nekkid. Like, bro, you could’ve…. I don't know, apologized for lying to him, but no, her solution is ‘I will OFFER MYSELF TO HIM BECAUSE HE’S BEEN THIRSTING AFTER ME’.
After Ash makes out with Amaris while she’s naked for a little while, he stops it, and they cuddle while she’s still naked and crying. It’s weird. Then they go to this temple that worships the All-Mother, much like the temple of Melitele in the witcher.
Nox throws a hissy fit because her powers of seduction don’t work on Ash, so instead, she meets a plot device child who gives her convenient information about where ‘the demons meet’. And Nox…asks this strange child if she can hug her, which is the weirdest shit ever. Who asks to hug a completely random child they just met? Also, the narration surrounding the hug is one of the creepiest things I have ever read. First, she wants to squeeze the little girl until she disappears. She says the hug is the best hug she’s had in years and then FOLLOWS THEM HOME.
Nox hears something about Amaris and…faints. Then she gets kidnapped by Millicent, who uses her slithery reptile hand to put her in a coma. She also killed Emily earlier with that demon hand, and Nox literally never finds out or bothers to try to find out about what happened when she wakes up from her coma. Now while Nox is in this coma, Millicent’s solution is to have a man sexually assault her comatose body, and then Nox kills him, so….girl power. After that, she tries seducing the Captain of the Guard so that she can intercept Amaris while she is visiting the Queen. And Erasmus/Eramus(Piper can’t figure out how to spell his name either) takes her to this torture chamber place, and like she keeps describing this dude as having virginal features, which is so WEIRD. There’s a really weird scene where Nox tries to entice the Captain into basically raping her before torturing her by pretending she likes it rough, so…again greeeaat. She also writes it like it’s a game of chess, and I really don’t think that Piper has ever played chess before. Anyway, she succeeds in getting the guard to try and sleep with her and sucks his soul out and then proceeds to castrate him by depriving his balls of oxygen. But here's the thing that really had me just unhinging my jaw in shock. She constantly is referring to herself as like angelic at this moment. Saying it's 'divine feminine justice' and like...Piper, I think you have a serious case of white savior complex and need some THERAPY.
Amaris, on the other hand, has been chilling in the castle, SUPER concerned about whether or not Malik has eaten. Literally, it is mentioned no less than three times. She says the Queen is too old to wear an ornate belt like the judgmental bitch that she is. The entire court scene was…oof. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a more moronic character than Amaris. She goes into the throne room, realizes that there is an illusion of the Crown Prince and that everyone but her can see it and instead of just…shutting her mouth and thinking it, she starts screaming like a lunatic about how the queen cast the curse on everyone. She has the power of illusion which is the biggest leap in the world. How do you know that someone hasn’t spelled the queen to believe the crown prince is really next to her? Does Amaris’ gift of sight allow her to tell where the magic is coming from? It also makes no sense that she would try and use her power on the queen when the queen is probably also half-fae, and as we learned earlier, her magic doesn’t work on people with fae lineage. So why not use it on the humans around? She’s screaming only at the queen when there are like fifteen human guards around her she could be shouting at. Amaris is such a MORON.
It's revealed the Queen is actually a witch and the reason they can tell is her lack of pointed ears(it actually says she has no ears but I digress). Amaris doesn't have pointed ears and neither does Nox. But they're both half-fae so...it stands to reason the Queen could be half-fae too. There are no specific indicators of a witch in this stupid book and everyone calls Amaris one anyway.
I have a lot of questions for Piper on her perceived notion of how this book was empowering for sex workers in any way, shape or form. Nox literally refers to herself as a wicked whore when she finds Amaris imprisoned and says that she should be the one behind bars. Like…are you fucking kidding me? Piper, you need so much therapy.
Plagiarism  Yes, this book was plagiarized. No, the entire book is not plagiarized, but Amaris’ subplot is. Since Piper wants to keep doubling down with her motte-and-bailey fallacy that her book is nothing like The Witcher, allow me to point out all of the ways that it is.
So, Amaris(Ciri) is half-fae with the whitest skin, hair, eyelashes and eyebrows you have ever seen. She has lavender eyes(like Daenerys Targaryen), a power that emerges when she’s upset and screams(like Ciri), and she mutilates her face with a scar in the exact same position as Ciri’s. Note that white-haired, scarred, action fantasy girl is not the issue here as Piper is trying to whittle it down to. If that was the only similarity, we would have no issue, and nobody would be saying anything.

3 Mandos and a Baby AU: The One Where Fenn Purposefully Adopts A Child
So, while nonsense is happening on Aq Vetina Fenn and a squadron of Protectors are dispatched to Corellia on an escort mission of great importance. Mandalmotors executive Jaor Ordo and senior member of the Ministry of Defense Korast Eldar are to meet with a Corellian ship company to negotiate a joint project.
Korkie decided that just Kom’rks and Fang-class fighters aren’t enough for the Mandalorian fleet. He wants something like the old Kandosii-class Dreadnoughts, just without the obvious weakness to the hyperdrive. Also, he wants a dedicated transport network to move civilians around Mandalorian space, especially now that the young Mand’alor’s Meshgeroya league is finally getting off the ground. Beer and circuses.
The initial meeting goes well, and as they’re heading back to the hotel Fenn hears noises from a nearby alley. He sends the squad on ahead while he checks it out.
Fenn sneaks up quietly to assess the situation and finds a bunch of scrumrats beating up a younger kid. Before he can make his presence known and come to the ad’ika’s aid some feral kid comes barreling in to try and help and just winds up being beaten by the gang instead. At this point Fenn does intervene, shouting “HEY” with his helmet’s vocoder turned all the way up. All the kids scatter, including the brave little one who jumped in to help the other.
A few days later negotiations are wrapping up really nicely. As they’re leaving the Corellian company’s office building a kid manages to slip through their guard perimeter and steal Eldar’s datapad. A datapad that contains so many state secrets, why the hell was it out, by the Ka’ra Korast!
Fenn and most of the other Protectors pursue the kid right down to the Den of the White Worms. Lady Proxima is yelling at the kid who brought the datapad down because he was supposed to steal a piece of beskar from the Mandalorians, not a datapad. Moloch goes to hit the boy when another kid steps between them and takes the blow. Fenn recognizes him as the kid from before – the one who jumped into a street fight he had no chance of winning to help out another kid – and his Mandalorian adoption instincts activate.
It’s bit of a fight, the Protectors take down Proxima’s enforcers and call the Corellian authorities to arrest them, and then they turn their attention to the kids. The feral child who keeps putting himself in danger to save others is standing between the Protectors and the younger kids.
Fenn manages to convince the boy, whose name is Han, that he’s not a threat and they take all the kids back to the hotel to sort things out. Fenn pays for like ten more hotel rooms on Korkie’s dime.
After a few days of the Protectors feeding and sheltering them without asking for anything in return some of the kids put down their guard. Han asks Fenn once, when they’re all eating dinner together, why they’re doing this. Fenn just replies that no Mandalorian worth the name would ever leave a kid to starve on the streets, it’s not honorable.
The kids start getting adopted, because over twenty Mando’ade were left alone with orphans. Garr and Ashara Peskod, seven year old twins whose parents died in an outbreak by the spaceport a year ago, get adopted by Vengo Reeves. Treka, a little Rhodian girl, gets adopted by Jaor Ordo. The human girl Han likes to hang out with, Qi’ra, gets adopted by Kaden Beviin, though she still seems fairly suspicious of the rest of the Mandos.
Han doesn’t trust Fenn that much. He can’t fathom a world in which a guy like the Protector just...cares. It’s not how things are done. Still, Han winds up talking to him more than he intends to. He tries to ignore the Mando, honest, but he always talks about such cool stuff. He even showed Han around the cockpit of his Kom’rk when he heard Han wants to be a pilot.
What really, finally gets Han to trust that Fenn is really just that nice happens on their second to last day on Corellia. Han’s suspicious of where Fenn disappears to everyday for an hour, and he manages to convince Qi’ra to cover for him while he sneaks to find out. Han watches from the air vent in Fenn’s room as the Protector holo-calls some lady named Bo.
This Bo lady moves the holocomm so a little kid lying in bed is visible and Fenn gets all extra soft and happy. The kid calls him buir and Han’s spent enough time around Mandos the past week to recognize that this kid must be Fenn’s son. Fenn sings the kid to sleep and Han’s not sure how to handle how soft and sweet and sappy the normally tough soldier gets.
Once the kid, whose name is Din, apparently, falls asleep Fenn and this Bo lady discuss what’s going on with Aq Vetina, which Han kinda remembers from the big holonews casts on some of the screens throughout the city. Apparently the Mand’alor is ready to go down to Coruscant and personally rip the Chancellor a new asshole, and when she says how proud she is of her nephew Han realizes that Bo must be Lady Bo-Katan Kryze, who he didn’t recognize without her armor. He gets kinda shocked and almost gives away his position because “holy shit Fenn’s on a nickname basis with his king’s aunt and may or may not share a child with her”.
Han refocuses on the conversation only to realize they’ve switched topics. Fenn’s now talking about some kid he kinda wants to adopt. He doesn’t want to push the kid into it but “by the Ka’ra Bo he wants to be a pilot and you should have seen him when he jumped in to save that other kid” and Han realizes with a start that the kid Fenn’s talking about is him. And Han’s…not sure how to feel about that.
He sneaks back and when Qi’ra asks him what he found out Han just tells her the truth. That Fenn wants to adopt him.
Their last day on Corellia Han just goes up to Fenn and asks “So are you going to adopt me or what?” and Fenn looks like he might cry. Han doesn’t know why he asked that, but maybe it had to do with how genuine Fenn had seemed when singing to his son, or while taking about Han.
Anyway, Fenn and company stroll back up to Mandalore with thirty two more passengers than they left with and absolutely no one is surprised. When Fenn introduces 12 year old Han to the Kryzes he’s like “this is my son, Han Rau”, and little Din runs headfirst into Han’s legs and screams “ori’vod”.
Listen, it’s my wish fulfillment stream of consciousness time travel AU and I’ll do what I want.

Sparity babs! The first two are their dracony twins and only biological children, while the rest were adopted. I see them being the type of couple who adopt kids because they want to give them homes and with Spike also being an adopted kid, it’d be something he’d really wish for kids who don’t have any family left/willing to take them in.
Their names are, from left to right: (Top Row) Sapphire “Sappy”, Sulfur “Sulfy”, Dandy, Dia, (Bottom Row) Grace, Yorick, Ruby
Dandy’s based on a tuxedo cat, Dia’s based on a chihuahua and Grace’s bird half is based on a pigeon while I’m still trying to figure out what her cat half is based on.
Some more info below
Sapphire and Sulfur have an interesting story for their birth. Rarity was pregnant as ponies usuly are when they’re expecting, but had given birth to two eggs after five months and then those eggs hatched after six months (I’m going with the headcanon that ponies gestate the way horses do irl)
After the birth of Sapphire and Sulfur, Rarity was unsure if she wanted to go through the whole pregnancy and birthing process once again, but was conflicted since she and Spike still wanted a huge family. After talking about it, with Spike mentioning how being raised by Twilight’s family was the best thing he ever had and that he was also loved and cared for by Night Light and Velvet, they decided to adopt.
Yorick is a yakallo, or a yak-buffalo hybrid, having been born out of wedlock. His parents were forced by their families to give him up, which is how he ended up in a orphanage.
Dandy is one of many Abyssinian orphans who were left to fend for themselves after the kingdom fell into ruin due to the Storm King’s takeover. His parents had died from an illness they contracted. Because Rarity and Spike adopting him gave him a much better life than many of his peers could hope, he’s extremely grateful towards his adoptive parents and the second most affectionate with them.
The kids usually spend more time with Spike, who finds himself often staying home and being the homemaker, as his busyness as Friendship Ambassador has lessened a bit over the years.
Dia, Grace, and Yorick all came from the Canterlot orphanage and were an inseperable trio. Spike and Rarity initially wanted to just adopt Dia, but they saw the close bond she had with her friends and noticed how the griffon and yakallo were bullied and treated poorly by the prejudiced Canterlot natives who would come to the orphanage to adopt. Being unable to stand seeing them mistreated, they also decided to adopt them, which led to the trio profusely thanking them and promising they’ll help around the house. Not that the kiddos had to, the couple were just happy to have new additions to their family.
Ruby was a fairly late addition to the family, being taken in by the family by the time her siblings were teens or pre-teens.
Ruby’s egg was discovered in Ponyville, having washed up on a riverbank and found by Pinkie. The Ponk initially wanted to make it into an omelette until Fluttershy recognized that it was a dragon egg and stopped her before a disaster could happen. The Mane Six met up again to discuss the egg, Rarity volunteered to care for it with spike, and that was how Ruby was added to their family.
Sapphire and Sulfur are very protective of their younger siblings, not hesitating to stand up for them if anyone were to treat them badly, especially if it was rooted in prejudice.
Ruby’s very affectionate with her parents, always nuzzling and cuddling with them, something that they both will not hesitate to return. Rarity especially likes it since her daughter’s very warm to hug.
When they were still very little and trying to get the hang of using their wings, Sapphire and Grace would regularly go on practice flights with their dad, who knew how difficult it could be to get the hang of flying. Even after they mastered flying now, they still regularly go on flights to spend time with Spike, usually doing so at sunset. When Ruby joined the family, she was included in these flights.
Dia and Dandy love helping Rarity with her seamstress work, often by suggesting what accessories or details she could add. They, especially Dia, will even go gem hunting with their mom both so they have something to add to clothes or as treat for Spike and Ruby.

After considering for a long time, I caved in today and decided to create more Twinsomnia OCs!
Tumblr media
Lemme show ya how I made them :D
——————————————————————
Tumblr media
This little kids’ name is Leon! He’s a 5 year old adopted kid who’s obsessed with anything and everything space related. Because he’s an orphan, he’s def got some of that mandatory secret traumatizing backstory that haunts him but I haven’t concluded what exactly. Yet 🙂
Tumblr media
At first, I wanted him to have this toy space helmet that he wears 24/7 and have him have poofy hair that takes up space (pun intended) in there, but I wanted to try something else for fun, so I gave him braids instead because braids are cool 👍🏾 I also switched his little star onesie for an astronaut one ‘cause that’s what he wants to be when he grows up!
Tumblr media
I played with his shape language a couple of times to see how unique I can make him look, however I got stuck so I’m ultimately going with the classic “tiny body big head” look and will hopefully redesign him more along the way.
Tumblr media
(P.S: I know it says his name’s Louie on this drawing but I eventually switched it to Leon because it just. Fits him better 🤷🏾‍♀️)
Tumblr media
This is Nicole! (For now…or not, I haven’t decided quite yet). She’s 12 years old and the older sibling of Leon, who’s adopted to her family, and uh…she’s pretty much your average stuck-up teen girl in children’s coming of age movies. ✨With a soft spot!✨
Tumblr media
The first time I drew her (sketch on the right)—well, I liked it, but the way she turned out wasn’t what I was trying to go with. She looks 16-17 in this one, and I specifically wanted her to look a bit younger.
Tumblr media
Designing her was kind of a hassle, especially because she either A) Didn’t look the exact age I wanted her to look in my eyes, and B) Her hair made her look like Megatron from the Transformers G1 series.
Tumblr media
But EVENTUALLY, I came across a design that I absolutely ADORE! I just changed her hair a bit from straight to a lil curly and BAM! My favorite character of this trio <3
Tumblr media
And now the Shadow Thing…I don’t really feel like posting my process for this thing because I despise it for existing and tormenting Leon and Nicole. And because I ran out of room to add more photos. The closest thing we can get to a design process of it is from my Twinsomnia detective “episode” post.
I didn’t plan on making it an actual OC at first, but I eventually came back to it when I needed a character interpretation for the fear of the dark. The Shadow Thing is basically similar to the Boogieman in the sense that it desires to feed off of children’s fears until they’re left traumatized. Yay. Fun.
Aaand to top this whole thing off, here’s some fun facts about these three! (mainly Nicole and Leon)
Nicole is Jamaican American (she has a Jamaican father and American mother) and Leon is African-American (The ethnicity of his past parents are unknown).
The Shadow Thing has similar shape-shifting abilities as the twins, except it can only take the form of anything scary.
Nicole has braces! And she hates it. She’ll attack anyone who reminds her that she does both physically and mentally. Even Leon.
The reason behind Leon’s left eye being hidden is because there’s a nasty scar on it. The eye already has a bandage over it, but he still hides it because he’s embarrassed by it :(
Speaking of eyes: Leon and Nicole originally were supposed to have each other’s eye shape, but I switched them up last minute!
Leon adore’s the twins. Nicole hates them. (I say hate but we all know she likes them deep down <3)
Nicole’s a complete phone addict and kiiiindaaa spoiled. She was having the time of her life being a pampered only child before her parents adopted Leon. Now she gotta learn to be humble >:(
Yeah, that’s pretty much it. Now Alex has more OC buddies!

I just wanna clarify, I meant A future to the wingfeather story. Sorry, I saw that being used in fic and really couldn't think of another word to use!
(wholy toothy cows I’m so sorry this took so long, my life has been a mess this past month)
You’re good, anon, I just wanted to make sure I understood so I replied the right way! “AU” in fanfic stands for “alternate universe”. The word you’re probably looking for here is “headcanon” which just means someone’s opinion on how certain things in a story might have gone (whether they be in the past, present, or future of the story).
Let’s get to it then. Spoilers, obviously.
*
So! Future Wingfeather Saga headcanons. Well, obviously they take Janner’s body to the First Well and he comes back to life but we all knew that one, haha *eye twitch*.
Hmm, okay, well it seems logical that Anniera starts to rebuild itself, starting with the towns and Castle Rysen. I think that the kiddos stayed as close to the original castle as they could (Nia and Artham and others from old Anniera helped) but they definitely put their own flair on it. They get trees and crops from the Hollows and Skree, Oskar donates books from his shop in Skree and from the Great Library to them and things slowly start to take on some form of routine and normalcy again.
Artham and Aurendelle get married and it’s a lovely little wedding. Artham fumbles over his vows a little and Aurendelle loves him all the more for it.
Janner and Sara finally admit they’re in a relationship and start acting like the cute little 13-year-old couple they are, shyly holding hands and giving each other flowers and cool books they found. Sara lives at the castle with the Wingfeathers and works there, helping out in the kitchens. Nia inevitably ropes her into doing THAGS with the other kids, but Sara actually likes them for the most part.
Thorn and Leeli are the littlest ship that everyone ships. They wander around the fields of Anniera when Thorn visits followed by a retinue of dogs.
I don’t know who Kalmar ends up with romantically, but it’s either Maraly or Galya (the girl who was a Fang that he rescued from the dungeons of Ban Rona). They start out just getting up to shenanigans with each other but it turns into something more as they get older.
I think the leftover Fangs attack Anniera at some point a couple years after the story ends. Whether they do it out of anger or insanity and desperation is unclear, but they do attack. It is a fierce and terrifying battle, but Anniera triumphs soundly and the remaining Fangs are banished again and do not try and attack the Shining Isle ever again, largely because their numbers are now too few and they are too weak to try again. I imagine Kalmar tries to help them, maybe even offers them sanctuary, but they don’t accept. They can’t stand Anniera and knowing what it stands for (and knowing that they could have been redeemed if they had only been brave enough).
Eventually all the kiddos get married and have kids, which I won’t get into because I just answered that ask. Artham and Aurendelle also have kids, either biologically or through adoption because let’s be real they’d be amazing parents.
Kalmar is a noble and forgiving king that the Annierans are honored to serve- well, when he lets them serve him. More often than not he’ll be the one showing up and serving them. Every year there is a celebration at the castle on the anniversary of Anniera’s restoration where everyone in Aerwiar is invited; Hollowsfolk, Skreeans, dragons, trolls, even a few ridgerunners who sneak in. (Oh yes, trolls, because Kal and Janner definitely visit Oood and vice versa. They exchange poetry and get to check out each other’s kingdoms. The trolls straight up adopt the Wingfeathers because Oood speaks so highly of them. The Wingfeathers get really good at fumigating the castle after the trolls visit.)
The Wingfeathers occasionally visit Skree to see Maraly and Gammon and Sara’s former orphans, as well as anybody left who lived in Glipwood when they did (like the Shoosters). They definitely stay in Peet’s Castle a night or two for old time’s sake. Or, the kids do, anyway, Artham struggles whenever he goes back there, so he, Aurendelle and Nia stay at The Only Inn with the Shoosters.
As they kids get older I’m sure they encounter more conflicts from the wider world. The Fangs and Gnag are gone, but there are other evils to be fought and conquered (or befriended and redeemed). The bond between Janner, Kalmar and Leeli only grows stronger as they get older, and their time as rulers goes down in history as a Golden Age of Aerwiar.
Yeah, that seems like a good place to stop. I hope that was what you were looking for! Feel free to send another ask if it wasn’t, and again, so sorry it took so long!
(Unlikely as it may be, if anyone ever wants to use my ramblings to help them with a fanfic or something then go right ahead! Just please credit me if you use anything specific)

Pura Vida: Epilogue
Tumblr media
Maya Solano is about as nervous as she’s ever been in her twenty-four year old life. She wipes her sweaty palms on her khaki shorts and scans the faces of the travelers arriving at the La Pavona riverbank. She’s looking for her first ever guests to take to Pura Vida. Even though they’re not technically guests, her anxiousness at seeing them is still causing her stomach to clench.
This is the first time she’s done this without either one of her parents.
She hears the excited squeal of her childhood best friend before she sees her. Olivia Murphy comes barrelling down the riverbank and throws her arms around Maya, almost knocking her off balance and into the water. But Maya holds on to her, her sister of circumstances, and takes comfort in the embrace. Both of them had been plucked out of dire situations, orphaned, and left to fend for themselves as tiny babies when compassion overwhelmed the couples that they ended up calling their parents. Steve and Connie Murphy gave Olivia a beautiful childhood, full of laughter and love. Ronaldo and Luciana Solano, even though Maya knew that was not their actual names, did the same for her.
Maya knows she’s lived an enchanted life. She grew up in paradise with two parents who adored her. Her mother would take her on the tours through the National Park, teaching her and the young people who came to the camp about the biodiversity that Costa Rica and Tortuguero offered. Her father would carry her on his shoulders, giving her a bird’s eye view of the world and its splendor. She was afraid of nothing growing up. She would spend hours jumping into the pool, knowing her father would catch her, lift her out of the water, and put her back on the side of the pool so she could do it again. She would curl up in her mother’s lap during the afternoon boat tours and fall asleep to the sounds of the howler monkeys, the boat motor, and her mother’s smooth voice.
As much as they showered her with love, they doled the same affection out on each other. As a little girl, she loved watching them sway with each other in the kitchen. Sometimes she would stand on her father’s feet and the three of them would dance together. When she became a teenager, the typical disgust at seeing your parents being handsy and affectionate hit her and she frequently found herself avoiding being around them. But there was hardly any time when they were near each other that they weren’t physically connected in some way. Then, she fell in love and understood why her parents constantly wanted to be near each other. They set the standard for what life could be like and it was magical.
She never did find out her adoptive parents' real names and Olivia’s father, on his last visit, had told her it was for the best. Some things needed to disappear into the past, like names and deeds that were attached to those names. She had seen the scars on her parent’s bodies, the bullet wounds on her father’s chest, arms and leg, her mother’s long jagged scar on her stomach, the reminders of their past lives that they didn’t talk about at all. Maya had tried to reconcile her loving father and compassionate mother with people who could have been part of unsavory situations and actions but she couldn’t do it. That convinced her that Steve had been right, whoever they had been previously was not who they were to her. But now…
“I’m so sorry about your parents,” Olivia whispers in her ear.
Maya’s practiced her response but it still makes her eyes smart. “They’re together now, so that’s good.”
And it is good. Her parents had been inseparable, constantly in each other’s orbit, until death took her mother six months ago. Her mother had been tying her shoelace and telling Dad that she loved him. By the time he had returned the sentiment, Mom was gone. The mainland doctors said it had been a brain aneurysm and she had felt nothing given how quickly it had happened. But at that moment, Maya’s father had lost his world and never recovered. His lungs were not that strong, one of the unspoken stories from his past as to why. Three months later, he caught a rare cold which settled in his chest. Maya knew he wasn’t going to fight it and told him late one night as he struggled to breathe, it was okay to go be with Mom. When she woke up the next morning, he too was gone.
Paola and her husband Ben had come to Pura Vida and helped Maya lay both her parents to rest. They choose a small spot off one of the nature trails to put the above ground stone and tile mausoleum. Paola had gifted Maya a framed pastel portrait of two green macaws that she had drawn in memory of them. She told Maya that she always referred to them as the macaws, two beings that devoted themselves to each other that when one passed, the other just couldn’t carry on without his mate. And as corny as it may sound, this is why Maya believes in such a thing as soulmates.
Speaking of soulmates, Maya releases Olivia and scans the crowd for someone else. He’s extremely easy to find, as if having two duffle bags strapped across his chest and a suitcase in each hand doesn’t help him blend in exactly. Paul Murphy is the spitting image of his father, tall, lanky, blue eyed and blonde. The complete opposite of Olivia and Maya. Maya has been utterly in love with him since she was thirteen and the Murphy’s came down to Costa Rica on vacation and visited the camp. Both sets of parents had thought it was “cute” until they were paying $100 phone bills and the schoolgirl crush lasted well past school age. Their fathers acted reticent but their mothers had soothed whatever worries there had been. Maya remembers hearing her mother tell her father late one night, “You know whatever is going to be will be. Fighting fate is futile. We both know that.”
Paul drops all the bags onto the sand of the riverbank and Maya slips easily into his embrace. That is when the grief hits her. Her parents are gone, she’s an orphan twice over now, alone in a big, large world. But Paul tightens his arms around and all the broken pieces of uncertainty and loss snap together in a comforting vision of the future. Her future. The camp’s future. The legacy of her parent’s future. Cartels are still running Colombia, kids still need a safe place to go. Colonel Martinez had passed away a couple years ago but his son is still active in helping young people leave the barrios. Trujillo’s niece has now taken over his role in Medellín and a nephew does the same in Bogota.
“Alright, alright,” Olivia interrupts, “I’m hungry. Let’s get moving.”
Maya releases Paul reluctantly, a shy grin on his face tells her he feels the same way, and they load the bags into the motorboat before climbing in themselves.
“Dad says he’s planning on coming down in about a month,” Paul says, untying the boat from the small dock. “He said he’s trying to talk Uncle Javi into coming with him.”
Maya starts the motor. “You know all it would take is Olivia to call him and ask.”
Olivia holds her hand up to her ear like it’s a phone and bats her dark eyelashes. “Uncle Javi,” she makes her voice warble, “we sure would like to see you. Please come to Costa Rica?”
All three young people burst into a fit of laughter knowing that the number one person that Olivia has wrapped around her little finger is their Uncle Javi. Maya enjoys the moment, the lighthearted feeling of laughter after the loss of the two people she loved most in the world. But now she has Olivia and Paul and they are going to continue what her parents started. She turns the boat in the direction of home. Out of the corner of her eye, she sees two green macaws take flight from the canopy and glide over the river before disappearing into the thick rainforest on the other side of the riverbank.
“Pura Vida,” she whispers to herself before glancing over at Olivia and Paul. They must have heard her because they both reach out and take her hand that is not operating the boat motor and answer her in unison.
“Pura Vida.”
