Loving reminder to everyone to buy micro-spikes, hiking poles, down jackets, snow boots, and anything else you need to survive snow if you live somewhere that lacks the infrastructure to cope with it.
Every sidewalk and street in my neighbourhood was an inclined sheet of ice last winter because the city seems to have one (1) snowplough and also no one owns snow shovels because no one ever needed to before.
I was comfy and prepared because I am a skier and a hiker, so I just have snow gear kicking around my closet. But you, too, should feel safe and comfortable this winter 💙

Me in 2023: Can’t believe we had a modern day news story that was so closely aligned with a great tragedy of the past. Good thing that will never happen again.

This pic was taken almost ten years ago to the day just a few miles down the road from me. I just love how it shows that a measly 2.5 inches of snow renders this whole area helpless and throws us into chaos.

Everything about Portland General Electric's failures during the 2024 MLK weekend artic blast started to make more sense when I learned about how much Enron's greedy fingers were involved 25 years ago
1) They lobbied for deregulation and lied about the implications
2) They used Oregon's power grid as a tool for the fraud they perpetrated in California (read about Cali's rolling blackouts in the early 2000s)
3) They sacrificed the financial integrity of Oregon's power grid by going bankrupt from massive fraud, forcing spending cutbacks on repairs that were probably definitely needed
4) All the poor PGE workers at the time lost 99% of their company stock value, crippling their retirement potential
Enron is an example of the fraud happening all around us. Learn from it.

❆ SEATTLE (ep44): unexpected sleepover at SEA
Now that we are confirmed to be staying overnight at the Seattle airport. .. We went around looking for more food.
Tumblr media
Beecher’s Homemade Cheese shop.
Tumblr media
I forgot which terminal this was located in bcos DL & I walked around a LOT. Good thing we didn’t check in anything, so we had all our belongings!
Tumblr media
I have never heard of Beecher’s before but it’s basically an artisan cheese shop that sells a variety of cheese. Their location here also has actual menu items that feature their cheese/incorporates their cheese in some way. I was pretty excited to try it actually.
Tumblr media
You know how most airport shops are quite small, this Beecher’s took up quite a big space. They had these large photographs on display on their wall & they were like. .. I don’t know.. 24 x 36in?
Tumblr media
Cheeses!
Tumblr media
Saw some interesting ones but didn’t buy any. Prices were steep!
Tumblr media
One of their latest items at the time: the Breadzel
Tumblr media
Looks . .. alright. Kinda dry, if you asked me.
Tumblr media
Their menu~
Tumblr media
We got the Mac n Cheese. It was SO CHEESY (& creamy)!!! Almost. .. artificially cheesy lol it’s so hard to describe. You know the cheetos cheese. .. the ‘fake’ cheese powder stuff that’s like. .. over the top? But you know it’s not real cheese. This was ‘real’ cheese but it was sooooo cheesy like the cheetos products haha it was so weird! I didn’t care for the macaroni much but . . overall, it was just okay.
Tumblr media
Found a spot in the corner at Terminal A, near Gate 20 to spend the night. ..
Tumblr media
Literally had this whole terminal to ourselves. ..
The time didn’t go by slow, which was surprising. I was catching up on my diary/travel journal so I don’t forget details for this blog post LOL I also called my family, DL called hers as well. We both did our own things for the rest of the evening, & discussed the idea that Edmonton should send Seattle a guide on how to deal with snow at the airport. ..
We took turns taking 2-3 hr naps in our corner for the entire night. DL was able to nap but I couldn’t so when it was my turn to ‘nap’, I just rested my eyes but my mind was fully awake. It was very quiet. ..
& THEN MORNING CAME~
Tumblr media
We went over to Terminal B for McDs. When we were doing our rounds last night, we realized that the airport only has 2 places open 24 hrs. One was McD’s & the other is a cafe called Mocha Cafe. Both were in Terminal B.
Tumblr media
Admiring some McD’s wall art lol
Tumblr media
Okay. .. 0830h: we were actually in front of Gate B21. Someone from the Air Canada desk told us that Gate B21 was gonna be used for another flight & that our flight got relocated to .. . yup, you got it! Back to A20. So we had to travel back here lol just can’t seem to leave A20.
More things. ..
Our air craft (the one that’s coming from Toronto) is delayed coming in bcos they were slow/delayed on the boarding (when leaving Toronto) so the wait continues.. .
& then we got another boarding pass???
Yeah I don’t know. Things got so “messy” here =(  but basically, what happened was: they said they over-booked. So some passengers from our ‘original’ flight got taken off, & we were 2 of the unlucky ones. We got boarding passes for the next flight, which supposedly was like leaving an hr after this one. I mean. .. not that we had an option to refuse anyway but. .. what the heck! It’s an extra hr!
Hope (the Air Canada desk agent) found us in the crowd sometime shortly after & booked us back onto the original flight........ ?!?!?! Yes.
Our “FINAL” boarding pass: AC8090, departing 1030h.
Tumblr media
** putting this picture here bcos Air Canada offered us free check-in of luggage due to limited space on air craft so both DL & I checked our carry-on in.
1010: okay so, departure time was scheduled for 1030h & it’s 20mins away but we haven’t started boarding yet. In fact, there was no air craft around that pulled up at the gate...... omg
1030h: we took an airport bus from gate A20 to a remote place on the take-off ground lol it was nearly a 5-min ride & we were like.. . “where are we going?” & then once the bus stopped, we continued to wait inside the bus.
Tumblr media
1100h: boarding the Air Canada Express plane!
Tumblr media
I’ve never been on one of these. It was super tiny o.O The air craft looked like a jet, honestly. I can see why they offered free check-in service bcos our carry-on suitcases would not fit on the overhead compartment =/
Tumblr media
1125h: air craft warmed up & we are ready to go!
1135: OFFICIALLY IN THE AIR! :D honestly wasn’t 100% confident that we were even gonna make it/land in/arrive at Vancouver. .. but we finally left the Seattle airport haha
Tumblr media
1208h (YVR time): we landed safely despite being a very bumpy ride. It was kinda scary! I guess smaller air crafts aren’t very stable compared to larger ones. Anyway, we arrived & the scenery looked exactly the same as Seattle.
Tumblr media
Again, we landed on a random part of the airport...
Tumblr media
This temporary gate was set up & it was quite a distance away from the ‘building’ =S
We went thru customs, picked up our checked bags & then headed to the Skytrain station
Tumblr media
Yup. .. SNOW!!!!
Tumblr media
MORE SNOW!
But yeah, we took the Skytrain from the airport to the Downtown core, specifically the Yaletown Roundhouse station.

jesus christ y'all today was so much that i think i am gonna stay put here for a day and try again sunday
i don't like being out in public for like, any length of time, and i am mad it is less risky to stay holed up in a hotel than drive more tomorrow, but... i have One Of Those Feelings. and also today scared me. a LOT. and i grew up in alaska. where the first time i drove a car was on snow and ice and i drove for 100 miles and that's just how we broke me in. but this storm, these roads, the drivers... good god, no thank you. i have siped and studded mud and snow tires and i couldn't stay steady. it took 16 hours to go 600 miles today. i am all done
started out with such determination, but goddamn i am gonna rest.

Current temp: -4F, with real feel at -23F. The girlies survived the ice storm last night. Everybody had unmelted snow on them, which is a good sing everyone's thermoregulation is working the way it should! Alapcas do seem a little cold still, they're shaking just a bit, but they should warm up once they settle back down into the bedding in the shelter. Their legs and undersides aren't super protected from the cold, but they curl up into themselves almost like you see sled dogs do. Mary doesn't seem cold at all to be honest, I think she wishes she had some horsey friends right now to be mischievous with. She seems to want to be active, whereas the alpacas just want to hunker down.
Girls had warm soup grain for breakfast, and are now munching on lots of hay. Basically continuously boiling water on the stove to keep dumping in the water through to try and keep it from becoming a huge block of ice.

A Nuclear Approach Pt 1: The Plague
by Liz Berry
A lot of things were supposed to happen in the last almost-three years.  Humanity missed births, deaths, weddings, funerals, human interactions both formal and casual, concerts, ball games, huge swaths of careers that had previously never seen the outside of a cubicle farm suddenly had to be tailored to the inside of private homes.  You know.  You were there.
The pandemic wasn’t supposed to happen, we all howled, though statistically we were almost overdue (“once in every generation, the plague shall fall among them,” thanks, Mother Abigail!  M-O-O-N, that spells COVID.)
For Dallas music staple, Salim Nourallah, the thing that was *supposed* to happen was his album, “A Nuclear Winter.”
***
Tumblr media
A Friday evening in January 2020, from a table at YAM (YOGA-ART-MUSIC in Dallas) I watched Salim preview material for his upcoming east coast mini tour with Rhett Miller.  The music making machinery in Salim’s head never stops, but the part that translates that live – especially when the live bits are far from home – requires a whole other set of switches, levers and pulleys.  Material. Polish. Present to audience.  Gauge reaction. Refine.  Wonder if the reaction will stay true for 1400 miles away.
The feeling that night was hopeful.  Salim would showcase the best and ear friendliest bits from the new Jesus of Sad EP, take said show on the road, and ranks of new fans would fall in behind him – the pied piper of Indie rock astride his velociraptor, resplendent in tennis visor and bathrobe.  All part of the plan: world domination one catchy song at a time.
Tumblr media
(Collage by me: Stickerhead Salim from: artist, Eric Edwards , Pied Piper illustration from this weird 70s human behavior book I have, veloci-Jesus is from Salim's Jesus of Sad Ep)
Easy peasy.
In February, I was fortunate enough to follow along behind Rhett and Salim for this tour.  My husband and I lucked in to being able to sell Salim and Rhett’s merch for them— bless them, what do you do when people invite themselves along to your party?  Put them to work, of course.
It was a week of shows, living the very lightest definition of the rock and roll lifestyle (for someone who’s dreamed of that very thing since age in the single digits, you might as well call have called it On the Road fantasy camp.  If they’d asked US to pay them to do it, I would have started looking for a handy ATM), taking care of Salim’s tshirts and traveling merch display case – I didn’t find out until recently that suitcase is on the cover of Rhett Miller’s: The Traveler (thank goodness Salim didn’t tell us at the time as there’s no way I could have carted it around quite so blithely with the massive extra weight of that particularly kind of responsibility.)
We raced to have as much fun as possible with the specter of COVID breathing down our necks:  a flight attendant with a runny nose, people at the airports wearing masks (and, oh dear, it hit EXACTLY where we were not weeks after).  And we were successful for the most part.  There was a blizzard in New York (blizzard to a person from Texas, at least), but even the idea of the blizzard filled me with longing after the pandemic really, truly hit – though Texas had its own Snowpocalype February of 2021 and I stopped wishing for things because the intervening dumpster fire years all seems to have weird senses of humor (like nesting dolls, each year seems to be a bigger dumpster that the previous year fits in and it’s all a-flame.  It’s fine, everything is fine).
Our friendships went almost exclusively online – since the pandemic, since the world stopped/ended, since The Plague, since the Shit Went Down… call it whatever you want, but there’s one thing to be said for these unifying kinds of experiences:  we did it together.  Masked and sanitized in line at the grocery store, small talk turned in to “remember that time we almost froze to death? Almost died?” (subtext being “… and could still die” but only if you believed in science/germs/whatever – which a lot of Texas apparently doesn’t.)
Salim would call me.  We’d occasionally wax wistful about that time we had a blast on the road:  Logistics that were annoying to plan at the time, but felt absolutely crucial afterward because I honestly don’t think I could have made it through the last two years without the amazing memories we made.  How the planned future fun was now on hold.  What about the record? On hold (though Salim has produced enough material in the time I’ve known him, at times it was hard to keep the EPs and the album straight.)
More time passed.
The pandemic stretched on.
Since touring with and befriending Marty Willson-Piper (former guitarist with The Church) in 2018, Nuclear Winter was meant to be The Album With Marty.  Well, Marty Willson-Piper was a million miles away – or might as well be – doing Marty Willson-Piper things.  I don’t even remember.  At some point he was in Penzance – which I actually had to Google because I probably thought Gilbert and Sullivan made it up.  You know… for their pirates.
Out of sight.
Out of mind.
We all had things to worry about.
At some point, humanity decided the pandemic was boring and inconvenient so we declared it over and went about trying very hard to ignore it and the wheels of life that had ground to a screeching halt chugged gradually back to life.  At some point, there had to be a reckoning.  Years of labor pain is too long not to see some sort of result or a the very least some sort of closure.
And the signal of this?  A Kickstarter campaign.  The album would be born in October 2022 when the finish line of $10,500 in pledges was crossed.  I watched the Kickstarter tick down from Salim’s own Galactic Headquarters – the listening room next to his recording studio—as he performed a show with former Travoltas bandmate, Paul Slavens (the band called it quits in 2019, but with new perspective brought by the pandemic, suits that still fit and a desire to give people the fun they crave, perhaps a revived two-piece affair might be in the offing in the new year.  Enquiring minds want to know!)
The goal was met and exceeded by $2357:
A Nuclear Winter is go.
You, reader, may enjoy ANW in May 2023.
In one of the few times in my life where I can marvel at the truth behind these words: I am special. I have this gorgeous work right. now.
Let's begin
(see part two)
