I bought this magazine for the Guilty Gear beta article (which I hope to translate soon), but it's absolutely loaded with interesting early fighting game reviews/previews as well as a decent Final Fantasy 7 preview article.

I refuse to accept this blasphemy of Eren killing Carla. After that panel of him reacting emotionally to Carla and Grisha holding him as a baby in 120, and all that longing on his face? Nope. I refuse to accept any further disrespect to the Jaegers 😤.

I had a feeling we wouldn’t see them in the recent snk chapter but I made these regardless. I imagine once Levi recovers these two old veterans will be so tired and done with everything when it comes to fighting. They have been through so much 😢

Human Irrationality (SnK)

I have always loved how Isayama presents human irrationality in the manga - that characters would undertake actions that, if judged rationally, seem decidedly aberrant and not to their best interests; yet it is those actions that define their humanity, and often seal their fate.

Let’s start with Levi. Levi was the one who urged Erwin to stay behind to keep him alive; yet he was also the one who eventually decided to let Erwin die (an “irrational” choice in the eyes of the public). Unable to be at peace with this outcome, Levi developed an unhealthy obsession with revenge, for which he nearly paid with his life.

There’re plenty other examples of characters making irrational choices. It is their irrationality that makes their characters deeply human, beautiful, and moving. Erwin insists on leading the operation to retake Wall Maria in order to see the truth first-hand, despite his physical condition. Zeke delaying the euthanization plan - his ultimate mission - to save his little brother first. Ymir surrendering her freedom and her life to help Reiner and Bertholdt. Reiner revealing his identity to Eren at decidedly not the best place or time. Kenny giving up the titan injection to Levi, which he originally intended to use to save himself.

These actions, motivated by love, or trauma, or guilt, or emotional pain, come from sources that run deeper than reason. Here I have to agree with Nietzsche that “consciousness and reason...play a rather minor role in what humans do, believe and value; far more important are our unconscious and subconscious instinctive and affective lives.” And this is also why I find it almost funny that Eren was wracking his brain trying to come up with a reason of Mikasa’s attachment to him. Some things can’t be explained by reason, Eren, it’s simply love.

All I got from chapters 120 and 121 of AoT was Zeke whining like a bitch, lol.

But in all seriousness, it really was Zeke’s arrogance that was his downfall.  He’s so unbelievably self-centered and self-important, and blames everyone for all his own problems.  And these chapters really highlight one of the main reasons I sympathize with Eren over Zeke.  Eren doesn’t try to blame anyone else for what he is, or pass off responsibility for his actions.  He owns up to them, at least.  He takes responsibility for them and for what he is, too.  Zeke blames Grisha for all his problems, calling him a “disgusting monster”, claiming that he brainwashed both him and Eren, using his anger at his father for not “playing with him” enough as an excuse for all of his own, sociopathic, violent tendencies.  So it’s pretty funny how, as he goes through Grisha’s memories, and discovers that his entire reason for being a psychopathic piece of trash was based on a lie, that Grisha, in fact, always loved him, despite messing up with him, Zeke suddenly wants to embrace daddy and do his bidding by “stopping” Eren.  But see, here’s the thing, with Zeke, it’s still all “me, me, me”.  HE’S going to save the world, HE’S going to “fix” Eren, because of course, anyone who doesn’t agree with and understand Zeke’s point of view is broken and wrong.  He’s going to be humanity’s “savior”.  It’s all just an ego-boost.  A way to make himself feel special.  He’s incapable of selflessness.  He can only ever see things from his own perspective.  Even in the end, when he does the right thing by letting himself be killed, he only does it because Armin makes him remember all the good times he had with Mr. Ksavar.  He does it because he realizes his childhood wasn’t all shit, and so gee, maybe he shouldn’t let everyone die.  But again, it’s only because he finally realized HE had good times in his childhood, because he thought about his OWN happiness.  It’s all funneled through his own perspective still, his own ego.  It’s just a reversal of his thinking before, that because his childhood was pure misery, or so he liked to believe, then everyone else’ would have to be the same. He literally can’t conceive of other people as separate from himself.  Like it’s okay for everyone else to have a chance at happiness now, because he just realized he got to have some of it too, he realizes others can experience happiness, because he experienced it.  He was always too damn self-centered and narcissistic to appreciate it.  He wanted to see himself as a martyr, as the one who suffered for others sins.  What a dick.

Zeke goes on and on at the beginning of 120 about how Ymir is nothing but a pathetic slave who has to follow the will of one of Royal Blood.    He says, specifically, “The Founder can create anything, even these earthen chains.  So long as I, with my Royal Blood, will it.”, before he proceeds to go on for a while longer about how special he is, about how he’s figured out a way around the vow to renounce war, how he isn’t tainted by the King’s ideology, saying over and over “I will save the world”.  He treats Ymir like he treats everyone else, as a tool to fulfill his own desires.  His special dream.  Her suffering doesn’t matter to him, he doesn’t even consider it or care.  All that matters is that he can use her.  This is probably most obvious in the next chapter, I know, when he cries like a total bitch over her ignoring him in favor of Eren, but I’ll talk about that more on my next post. 

Everything this dude thinks and does is only ever with himself in mind.  He really buys it, that he’s some special being, a chosen one, and only he is capable of saving the world from the evil Eldians.  He’s so stupid and annoying.  For someone who whines on and on about being neglected his whole life, he’s sure got a high opinion of himself, and the irony of him telling Eren that he had Mr. Ksavar to “save him”, while unironically being completely oblivious to the fact, just really exemplifies Zeke’s self-centered narcissism.  He admits that he wasn’t alone, that he had someone who cared for him, and yet he continues to cling to this idea that he had the most awful childhood experience ever, because he needs it to continue to justify his own, sick behavior and desire to stick it to his daddy at any cost.  It shows an incredible lack of introspection.  

He revels in thinking he’s won at the end of chapter 121, telling Eren that he’s “as powerless as ever”, bragging about his own ability to control Ymir.  It’s pathetic.  It’s Eren’s ability to consider Ymir’s own suffering, her own pain, that allows him to gain her power.  Zeke’s too self-centered to ever do something like that, to consider another person’s feelings, and it’s why he loses to Eren here.

Anyway, I’m gonna be glad when I get past these chapters.  I’m sick of talking about this guy.  It’s exhausting.

Eren’s explanation of “because I was born into this world” doesn’t even make any sense anymore???

In 120, he told Zeke that he didn’t agree with him because he believes SoY deserve to live as they are. But in the end, he took away the very thing that made them SoY.

Sooo...since the end result was the same (the eradication of SoY as a species), he could have literally saved more lives by taking Zeke’s route.

Like, the people of Paradis would have gotten to live either way. But at least with Zeke’s plan, their identity wouldn’t have been erased in their lifetimes. And millions of people wouldn’t have been murdered for no good reason.

Also, the whole “but no more SoY will be born” argument is irrelevant since this route resulted in no SoY being born anymore too 🤷🏻‍♀️.
