7 Sustainable Luxury Designers Disrupting The Fashion Industry
Don’t let the words designer and luxury scare you. While these brands are much more expensive than traditional fast fashion labels and even our favorite affordable ethical brands, it’s worth noting these designers for when you’re ready to invest in a statement piece. Or for when you’re browsing online consignment stores, and secondhand luxury retailers like Vestiaire Collective.
Not only are the designers below creating garments that will last you years (and then some), but they’re paving the runway with progressive production methods and innovative textile inventions. Whoever said environmental sustainability and luxury fashion couldn’t mix?
1. Stella McCartney
Sustainability | Cruelty-free—no fur or leather, re-engineered cashmere & ethically sourced wool, organic cotton & recycled textiles, 100 percent PVC-free, sustainable packaging Best For | Ready-to-wear fashion for all genders & ages, swimwear, sunglasses & bags
Stella McCartney has been reshaping fashion since launching her first collection in the early 1990s. Known for creating modern garments that exude natural confidence, the UK-based luxury designer is a pioneer of alternative materials and eco-friendly practices.
There is no compromise when it comes to sustainability, and pushing boundaries is always at the forefront of the brand’s mission. In 2014, Stella McCartney introduced Clevercare, a simple, five-step labeling system to help consumers care for and prolong the life of their clothing through mindful garment care.
Continuing to set the bar high for social and environmental sustainability in the fashion industry, Stella McCartney regularly conducts audits and measures impact, too. A member of the Ethical Trading Initiative, the brand is also careful with its selection of suppliers, many of whom are small businesses are artisans in Europe.
As an added bonus, the Stella McCartney brand gives back to organizations like Bioplanet, Memorial Sloan Kettering, and Million Trees Miami.

2. EILEEN FISHER
Sustainability | Organic, recycled, & sustainable garments, natural dyes, secondhand shop Best For | Inclusive & petite sizes for women, minimalist staples
EILEEN FISHER is passionate about disrupting the linear production model touted by most luxury fashion brands. The eponymous Illinois-bred designer paints in circular brushstrokes, recycling and giving new life to old textiles and discarded garments.
The result? Luxurious and sustainable womenswear with a particular focus on inclusive and petite sizing.
Loved for her use of recycled fabrics, organic fibers, and natural dyes in production, it comes as no surprise that the EILEEN FISHER brand is a certified B Corp with several sustainable initiatives like secondhand shops called Renew and Waste No More. If that isn’t progressive enough, the team also collaborates with environmental conservation orgs, supports artisans, and empowers women through the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Mara Hoffman
Sustainability | Recycled fabrics & fibers, hemp, linen, & organic cotton, eco-friendly packaging & branding, secondhand shop, sustainability commitments Best For | Designer swimwear, womenswear
Mara Hoffman’s collections, which are devoted to color and sustainability, draw from the inspiration of women. The luxury designer aims to encourage mindful consumption and “encourages consumers to reevaluate the relationship” they have with their clothing.
Employing alternative approaches to fashion production, the brand uses an array of sustainable fabrics, including ECONYL® and REPREVE® in the favored swimwear line—which are regenerated nylon fiber derived from waste, and polyester fiber made from recycled plastic, respectively. Mara Hoffman also uses hemp in ready-to-wear collections, as well as organic cotton, linen, ethical alpaca wool, and fibrous plant-based materials like modal sourced through Lenzing Group.
Additionally, the brand uses sustainable means for shipping, packaging, and branding, and internationally accepted environmental and human rights standards are upheld for responsible production. As an added bonus, Mara Hoffman hosts a secondhand shop called “Full Circle” to keep items out of landfills.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Fe Noel
Sustainability | Natural fabrics, made-to-order options, handcrafted in NY Best For | Tropical-inspired colors & styles
For luxury garments inspired by Grenada, we’re turning to Fe Noel’s work. This womenswear brand based out of Brooklyn, NY combines tropical colors, bold prints, and stunning styles for a gorgeous collection that works from the beach to the runway. Fe Noel’s line includes wide-leg pants, flowy tops and dresses, and eclectic swimwear.
Sustainable pieces are handcrafted out of its New York studio, with typical sizes ranging from XS through XL—but you can also choose a made-to-measure option for a guaranteed perfect fit. And accessibility is important to this luxury designer, too: Some garments start at just over $50 and payment plans are available.
Founder Fe also launched the Fe Noel Foundation, so proceeds from the brand also support underserved youth who want to launch their own businesses and make an impact on a global scale. This is exactly what ethical and social responsibility looks like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Roopa Pemmaraju
Sustainability | Artisan-made worldwide, low-waste, fair trade, sustainable materials Best For | Summer dresses, tops, & skirts
If we had to distill Roopa Pemmaraju’s style in three words, we’d say floral, feminine, and summer-chic. Combining modern and traditional designs, pieces are drafted in New York and then sustainably made by artisans in India using age-old techniques. We love the team’s emphasis on “a world where the traditions that have shaped India’s culture for centuries can continue to thrive, instead of disappearing into the shadows of fast fashion.”
In addition to being fair trade and offering competitive wages, the brand also prioritizes slow fashion values—its clothing and accessories are made with recycled or natural fabrics like cotton, corn fibers, eucalyptus, and silk, which means it embraces low-waste practices as well. Then each piece is detailed with hand embroidery, digital printing, or hand block printing for that gorgeous final touch. You can find out more about Roopa Pemmaraju’s processes, fabrics, and craft here.
It’s worth the investment knowing no two pieces are exactly alike.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Gabriela Hearst
Sustainability | Deadstock and recycled materials, plastic-free packaging, gives back Best For | Timeless, elevated staples and statement pieces
Launched in 2015, Gabriela Hearst is a brand committed to sustainability, from the manufacturing process to the materials used, with the goal that the final pieces will be so loved that their owners won’t ever want to throw them away. This is a brand that values tradition more than trend, where the details matter. “I wanted to create a brand that had that feeling of things that are well made and long lasting,” says Hearst. Still, she looked to sustainable materials to achieve this goal, and in 2017 they launched a collection using 30% deadstock fabrics. Then the company started to examine their packaging, introducing TIPA flexible packaging, which offers bio-based alternatives to the traditional plastic. By 2019, the company was fully plastic-free. The brand is now working towards the goal of eliminating the use of virgin materials. “I like the idea that we’re doing our part by not creating something completely new,” the designer says.
Of Uruguayan and American descent, Hearst uses the wool of her family’s six-generation merino sheep farm in Uruguay to produce piqué and twill suits. The company also has a partnership with Manos del Uruguay, a venerable non-profit and women’s cooperative empowering rural women who work in the production of Gabriela Hearst hand-knits. The brand continues to set aggressive eco-conscious goals for itself, raising its own standards of sustainability, including creating carbon neutral shows at Paris Fashion Week with 60% deadstock materials. With a refined, elegant aesthetic and rigorous attention to craft, these are pieces that you can feel good about owning for decades to come.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. TOVE
Sustainability | GOTS organic cotton, Oeko Tex certified, recycled labeling & packaging Best For | Timeless, luxury classics
Founded by Camille Perry and Holly Wright in 2019, TOVE is a Danish girl’s name that means strength and beauty, the epitome of the brand’s aesthetic goals. Each design is meticulously vetted as part of an edit of signature pieces. With generously cut fabrics and carefully designed details, these pieces are meant to seamlessly transition between occasions and events. Elevated minimalism for the modern woman, this brand is inspired by the women they design for, with expert craftsmanship that ensures longevity.
Sustainability is at the center of the brand’s philosophy: fabrics are sourced from mills committed to low environmental impact. Natural, organic, and recycled fabrics are at the heart of these designs, and manufacture is kept mainly at source to minimize their carbon footprint. Each collection is created with a timelessness in mind, purposefully conceived to transcend seasons. After sourcing the principle fabrics for their sustainability and luxury quality, the collections are created with beauty and durability at the forefront of each design. If you want to build up a wardrobe of sustainable pieces that will never lose their quality or style with time, stock up on everything from dresses to lingerie to outerwear from TOVE.

Some Theories/Ideas on Jolex for 14b
So, I have many many many theories on how Jo & Alex’s storylines are going to unfold for the rest of the season. And I needed to write them down and share them before my brain overheated from storing all of these different ideas.
Some things that I’m pretty positive are going to happen:
- Jo will get a divorce from her husband. Someway somehow.
- Jo is going to take her boards & choose a specialty.
Although I really hope we will, I don’t think we’ll see her physically taking them, but we’ll see her leave for the trip and discuss it with Alex.
This will bring a long the plot line of where Jo is going to do her fellowship. Will she move, will they move together, will they stay? If she moves should they get married or maybe they shouldn’t? Does Alex want to try and go to John Hopkins again? Does he want to create a trial of some sorts? How is his career affected by Jo moving?
- Jolex will have some type of relationship milestone.
Obviously the two top contenders will either be a marriage or a baby. Maybe both, but that’s highly unlikely. My vote is for a mini Jolex.
Oh, I have a whole bunch of theories on how a jolex baby/pregnancy will pan out.
I’m also pretty positive that Jo will be the one to propose whenever it happens. I mean after 3 tries that all ended with a “no” I bet Alex is a little scared and turned off from trying to propose.
I also have ideas on how this proposal should happen. (it includes powdered donuts)
Maybe Jo decides that after this entire terrible divorce ordeal that she doesn't want to get married again. But is willing to commit to Alex and grow their relationship some other type of way. (probably a baby)
(Side Note: Sometimes I’m torn on wether or not I think the proposal will happen quickly, after Paul leaves (or dies), or if they’ll use the proposal as a season finale grand gesture. Or, maybe they get engaged after Paul leaves and then the actual marriage takes place around the season finale)
- I think Bethany Joy Lenz’s character is Paul’s current girlfriend and Jo is going to try and help her get out of the abusive relationship.
Warning - graphic theory ahead:
I also have a theory that if Paul doesn’t die, he may go away for a while and come back during some pivotal point for Jo & Alex’s relationship and disrupt their happiness.
He could come back right before they get married and Jo is beaten and doesn’t make it to the wedding. Thus, making Alex think she walked out. OR we discover Jo is pregnant and then right after, he comes back and beats her. Now we’re worried about her as well as the baby(ies) and bam season finale. But all of this depends on how they’ve already written the Paul Stadler storyline and whether or not he’s dead or in jail by the end of it. Also, it pretty much would need a guarantee that Matthew Morrison would want to return for episodes later on.
Some things that I’d like to see to happen:
Jo and Meredith becoming friends. ( I feel like Alex is going to be wrapped up with saving Frankie when we come back and Meredith is going to be the one to help Jo confront Paul and help her deal with the situation. I picture Meredith becoming protective of Jo and this is where their relationship blossoms.)
Alex doing something really cool career wise. I want him to have a trial or save a baby in some extreme way or maybe take up teaching as a side gig. Maybe he brings back the African program (that’s what it was, right?)
I want them to move to a different house. I love the loft, but now it’s kind of tainted because of what took place there. I want them to have a grown up house like Alex suggested. Where their kids can run around in the backyard with their rescue dog and there’s a treehouse in the back that Alex tried to build but then got fed up and hired someone to finish it.
I WANT A WAFFLE SUNDAY SCENE. BUT WITH JO, TOO.
I really want another scene like in 9x14 where Jo surprises everyone at how smart she is at math.
I want Jo to find out she has a long lost sister because out of all the characters on this show with long lost sisters, Jo discovering she has one is the only realistic scenario in which someone would really find out that they had an estranged family member.
I want to see Alex with his mom or sister. Even so much as mentioning them would be great. I want him to have to go see his mother or maybe she shows up at Grey Sloan in need of help.
NGL I want some hot and steamy Jolex hospital sex because they’re the ONLY ones who haven’t done it in the hospital.
Alright that’s all i’ve got. Maybe I’ll write out my different thoughts on how an engagement and/or pregnancy storyline will happen.

Song # 2 off 'Twerp Verse' is out today! go check it out via <3 @thefader <3 thanks for the kewl words Jordan Darville!
"'Lean In When I Suffer' is about that fun breed of 'ally' who wears out their already exhausted friends by relying on us for excessive emotional labor. They want props for their wokeness, but don’t want to put in any actual work or divest themselves of power [...] and shut down when you try to talk them through their problematic tendencies. Because #selfcare? So you’re stuck in a toxic vampiric loop trying to maintain a relationship--Lean In AND Suffer, why don’t you!"

Why Did Jennifer Lawrence Take a Huge Loss on Her NYC Penthouse?
Compass, Stephane Cardinale - Corbis
Jennifer Lawrence has finally sold her palatial penthouse in Manhattan for $9.9 million. The transaction was reported by Variety. Originally listed for $15.45 million, Lawrence’s lair was most recently on the market for $12 million.
The “Hunger Games” star, now 29, was clearly hungry for a sale—her deluxe digs had been on the market for about a year. And she gave up on breaking even on the sale of her Upper East Side abode, putting it on the market for less than the $15.6 million she paid for it back in 2016.
That year, she was named by Forbes as the “highest-paid actress in the world,” for the second year in a row, and raked in a reported $46 million in 12 months.
So while the A-lister is bankable at the box office, her real estate acumen is up for debate.
If the final sale price is correct, J-Law is out millions, especially when you factor in transaction fees and decorating costs.
We asked some luxury real estate experts to give us their views on the transaction. Here are a few factors to consider with this deeply discounted luxury sale.
Let’s take a tour
First, let’s peek inside. No question, the upscale residence is undeniably gorgeous.
Entered via a key-locked elevator into a vestibule, the 4,000-square-foot penthouse, atop a 30-story high-rise, features loads of light, high ceilings, and 3,000 square feet of outdoor space spread over two floors.
Jennifer Lawrence’s penthouse includes a two-floor terrace.

Indoors, the layout includes three bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, and a great room with a two-sided fireplace. Walls of windows offer East River and downtown Manhattan views. The chef’s kitchen includes a casual dining nook.
Separated by a long hallway, the bedroom wing features two en suite bedrooms, a powder room, and a main suite with a dressing room, terrace access, and a bath. The condo also includes a family room and an in-unit washer/dryer.
Outdoors, the endless al fresco space includes a built-in table tennis table, full kitchen, and multiple seating areas, including an outdoor living area with gas fireplace.
Building amenities include full-time door attendants, concierge, and a drive-in garage that accesses the elevators, a definite must for a star craving privacy from paparazzi.
Other features for residents include a massive fitness center with a pool, as well as bike storage.
Location
Given the apartment’s obvious appeal, why the need for a price cut? It’s a tired real estate cliché, but the location of Lawrence’s place is less than ideal—with one exception.
The very far East Side isn’t exactly a lively locale. The upscale but nontrendy area isn’t where you’d imagine a young movie star winding up.
“It’s not near anything,” says New York City luxury real estate agent Dolly Lenz.
She notes that the desolate destination is situated between the United Nations and a number of health care centers, and not much else.
“It’s not a location that New Yorkers ever were attracted to.”
And for a buyer willing to shell out north of $10 million, there are choices in the city.
“At that price point, you really have your pick of where to live. We would not recommend to someone to spend $15 million there,” says Jennifer Lenz, managing director of Dolly Lenz Real Estate.
However, the area is close to a number of world-class hospitals, such as New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, the Hospital for Special Surgery, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
So if you’re a doctor, or in quick need of one, this location is an absolute dream. And at this price point, perhaps you have a car and driver at the ready, which means the inconvenient location isn’t a big whoop.
Was the price right?
Lenz added that the movie star “paid a little too much when she bought it.”
Which leads to a buyer’s ultimate dilemma—the decision to take a hefty loss. Clearly, the actress knew she wouldn’t get all her money back, given that she placed the apartment on the market for under what she paid. But don’t blame the lovely digs.
“It didn’t depreciate. She paid too much,” Dolly Lenz says.
The pandemic surely added to the stress of finding a buyer, with the Manhattan market grinding to a halt in the early spring. The slowdown may have contributed to the additional price drop.
“Given the price reduction history of this unit, she was likely wanting to unload the property, even if she had to take a loss, which isn’t always a bad thing for tax purposes,” says Cara Ameer, a bicoastal agent with Coldwell Banker licensed in California and Florida. “The New York City market had been slowing down prior to the pandemic, and inventory had been building.”
Ameer adds that the confluence of events “created the perfect storm for someone to find a deal.”
Time to move on
At the same time, the star has been juggling other New York real estate, and certainly didn’t need to pay extra costs for a place she isn’t using. She may not have wanted to bide her time to find the right buyer willing to pay top dollar.
“The market is particularly challenging at the high end. There are limitations to finding a buyer who would want to and could afford to invest in this home,” broker Becki Danchik of Warburg Realty says.
“If she absolutely wanted to sell without waiting out a slow process, it was a smart business decision to accept such a deep discount.”
Lawrence may not have wanted the added burden of managing a home sale on top of her other life plans.
Says Noemi Bitterman, an agent with Warburg Realty, “People sell fast and at any expense in a divorce settlement, an estate sale where heirs are eager to collect, a move, or getting married to a partner who lives somewhere else. Whatever the case may be, sellers are willing to take a loss and move on.”
Actually, Lawrence did get married last year, to the art dealer Cooke Maroney. And yes, the couple were reportedly hunting for a new nest in the city.
The Oscar winner also owns a condo in Tribeca that she’s previously offered for rent. And on the West Coast, she has a place in Beverly Hills, which she purchased in 2014 for $8.2 million.
The listing agent, Pamela D’Arc with Compass, declined to comment.

INTERVIEW: JOHN + GUS OF ACID CAROUSEL
Tumblr media
INTERVIEW: JOHN + GUS OF ACID CAROUSEL
By: Sloane Lenz
I happened to catch Acid Carousel at Saturnalia Festival in Austin a couple weekends back and was blown away by their presence and energy on stage. Lined up perfectly across the inside stage at the Sahara Lounge, you could tell they were there to pump out some sound. Three guitars and a bass on the front line, backed up by keyboards and a drummer, the room was in awe from the first song. Birthed almost two years ago from the minds of John Kuzmick and Gus Baldwin, now based in Denton, TX, the guys have been traveling and releasing music at a shockingly rapid rate ever since. With a current lineup of 6 members (John Kuzmick (21) on vocals and guitar, Gus Baldwin (19) on vocals and guitar, Ian Salazar (20) on bass and saxophone, Lucas Martins (18) on guitar, Fielder Whittington (21) on drums, and Drew Wozniack (21) on keyboards) the stage is always full of a rotating crew of musicians, nearly busting at the seams, but effortlessly getting their point across. They’re a great blend of heavy psych vibes, while incorporating dreamy pop elements and classic rock and roll energy behind it all. They have a new mini record titled Street Cowboy coming out soon on Dreamy Life Records, as well as three full lengths set for next year. I had a chance to chat with John and Gus and hear a bit about how the band was birthed, who inspired them, and what we can look forward to coming from them in the next few months. Check out the full interview below:
-----------------------
INTERVIEW:
Sloane: “How was Acid Carousel born?”
John: “Acid Carousel was born when I decided to record a few songs I'd had for awhile that I wasn't going to use for the band I was in at the time. I released one of those songs as a single on Facebook where Gus saw it. He commented that he was going to play bass for the band and I just said alright.”
Gus: “Yeah, and eventually I wanted to play guitar too so I did that.”
Sloane: “Describe your sound in three words.”
Both: “I guess you'd describe our sound as like enamored, sexy pop. (laughs)”
Sloane: “I read that you guys try to stay on a strict release schedule of putting something out every three months. What made you make that decision to work towards a goal like that?”
Gus: “Three months I guess is just the amount of time it takes John and I to get bored of our last release and get antsy to put out something new. We don't necessarily keep up a release schedule that tight, but we just like the idea of always working on a new release. Always.”
Sloane: “Who are some of your main influences musically?”
Gus: “My main peeps I try to draw inspiration from are people like James Brown, Tim Presley, Captain Beefheart, Ray Davies, Can, Serge Gainsbourg, and some heavier stuff like the Damned and Sabbath and things. But we listen to anything we can find so our music tends to sound like a weird blend of all the different things we like.”
John: “I get a lot of inspiration from Anton Newcombe, The Beatles, mid-sixties Brian Wilson, Brian Jones, Spoon, The Olivia Tremor Control, Syd Barrett, Donovan, etc. I could go on, but we try and draw inspiration from as much as we possibly can.”
Sloane: “What's your writing process like? Does everyone have a certain "job" in the process, or does it vary song to song?”
Gus: “Writing process is usually all John and I. We'll both write songs to either bring to the group to learn, or we'll bring ideas to each other to help finish. Recording wise its usually just a free for all between us two and a few other people, but generally John ends up writing all the bass lines, which I'll then put drums on top of.”
Sloane: “Has music always been something you knew you wanted to do? Or do you remember a moment that you realized it was a path you wanted to pursue?”
John: “There hasn't really been a moment in my life I can remember where I didn't want to be involved in a band or just making music. Even through some of the dumb phases I went through in middle school, like thinking I could play football, I was always thinking about how a certain artist might have gotten a certain sound or how I could write music like my influences.”
Gus: “I guess I started playing music around age 6 and kept playing. Music was the only thing I would consistently be interested in or any good at, so eventually I just stopped doing anything else and made it my full time obsession.”
Sloane: “So you guys started your own label, 'Get With It Records'. What inspired that and how has that been working from both angles?”
John: “The inspiration for the label was mainly just having a platform to release stuff on. We want to record other bands or release other people's music, but we're always busy working on stuff of our own, or playing shows, so we haven't had time. I also feel like it makes more sense to release on your own label, because then you can do whatever you want.”
Gus: “Yeah if anyone wants to be our label CEO feel free to hit us up (laughs).”
Sloane: “If you weren't playing music, what do you think you'd want to do for the rest of your life?”
Gus: “If I wasn't playing music I'd probably wanna be a goat farmer or a butler or something hot like that.”
John: “I'd be a vagrant.”
Sloane: “If you could collaborate on a song with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?”
Gus: “I wouldn't wanna collaborate with James Brown because that would just be silly, but I'd give my right arm to play in the J.B.'s for like ten minutes.”
John: “I'd probably wanna work with Brian Jones, he could play anything he wanted and write such amazing parts. We could make a super Middle-Eastern vibe record together, I feel like.”
Sloane: “Stylistically, were you guys all on the same page about how to dress and how you guys present yourselves? Or was it something that sort of developed into what it is?”
Both: “The street cowboy life chose us, so thats how we present ourselves to the world.”
Sloane: “What's your dream venue to play one day?”
Gus: “My dream venue to play has been the Paradiso in Amsterdamn ever since I went there a few years back. Old church. Sound Huge. Lots of Dutch too, they're really nice. But I think it would be cooler to do a set on the international space station, or one of Richard Branson's spaceships if we could.”
John: “I feel like we need to be the first band to tour space. We can do a several planet, solar system run that'll have the aliens going crazy.”
Gus: “We're gonna throw a huge festival 53 miles West of Venus.”
Sloane: “What's been your favorite gig so far?”
Gus: “My favorite set we ever played was when we played to 15 people after a sold out Walters show and got our power cut after 3 songs cause we got too rowdy.”
John: “My favorite set was when we played a house show festival with 15 or 16 members as Acid Carousel and The Tangerine Dream Machine.”
Sloane: “How was the name Acid Carousel decided upon?”
John: “I came up with the name Acid Carousel from Brian Jonestown Massacre references. "Acid" being another name Anton Newcombe released a few songs with in the early 90s, and "Carousel" which is a song from the If I Love You EP.”
Sloane: “What message do you hope to get through with your music?”
Gus: “I guess my songs don't really have any message, they're just a way for me to have fun expressing all the weird things I find entertaining about life.”
John: “A lot of my songs are about actual experiences I've had or things I see going on around me. There's a lot of memories I write about, just expressing how I feel or felt about those.”
Sloane: “Anything new in the works you can tell us about?”
Gus: “We've got this new EP mini album thingy wingy called Street Cowboys that’s gonna be out on cassette from Dreamy Life Records very soon that we’re really excited to finally be done with and share with people! Other than that, for the new year we’re planning on recording a new record we've been making with a dear friend of ours named John David Bartlett, who used to be active in the Texas psych scene back in the late 60s, also for Dreamy Life. We're also about to hopefully start recording the first parts of this rock opera we wrote about a cult that our drummer is the leader of.”
John: “We're always writing new stuff though, so who knows, we might have even another record this upcoming year, but I wouldn't say for sure just yet.”
