Any cool deep sea creatures ? 👀
YES!!!!
My personal favorite is the giant siphonophore, so I’ll tell ya all about it!
Giant siphonophores are the longest invertebrates in the world— up to 50 meters long (160 feet). That’s longer than a blue whale!
A siphonophore is a type of jellyfish-like creature called a hydrozoan. Hydrozoans differ from true jellyfish in they they are colonial organisms, meaning they are composed of tiny animals called zooids. All these zooids work together as one, and cannot survive on their ownZ
A siphonophore uses its bioluminescence to lure in its prey, then paralyzes it with stinging cells called nematocysts. As a matter of fact, all cnidarians (be they sea anemones, jellyfish, corals, or hydrozoans) have nematocysts!
Since siphonophores live in deep ocean waters, their jellylike bodies are well-adapted to the intense pressure. If they are brought to the surface, they will burst.
All of the zooids in a siphonophore colony come from the same egg! The egg develops into a polyp called a protozooid, which buds into all the other zooids in the colony.
The giant siphonophore’s colony is arranged into the following parts, all on a long stem:
The pneumataphore, or a gas-filled float. This is the “head” of the siphonophore.
Nectophores, or zooids specializes for swimming. The area of the colony containing the nectophores is called the nectosome.
The rest of the zooids reside in the siphosome, just behind the nectosome. They are responsible for feeding and reproducing.
Some siphonophores are either male or female, while others have both male and female structures in the same colony!
There’s still a lot we have to learn about siphonophores! I like them because A) they’re weird and mysterious and B) they’re kind of pretty. I’ve always had a soft spot for cnidarians.
If you want to learn more about siphonophores, check out this website!
And here’s some pictures!

this is the rhizophysa filiformis, my absolute favorite siphonophore.
it is around 4 inches when contracted, and can be a couple feet long when stretching its tentacles for catching prey. it has been reported to be around 500m deep in the ocean, and is in the rhizophysidae family! it is currently found in the mediterranean sea, the gulf of mexico, and in the north atlantic ocean.

opinion on siphonophores? 🌊🪼
finally looked tbem up today and watched so many videos and saw so many images of various types it was mindblowing.
youtube
this video is..there eare no words.. Look at the awe in the man's face. It is like an encounter with god or an angel..
Why is it so hard for us to understand ourselves as thousands of small creatures forming 1. what's really the difference in this structure.... if the zooids cannot survive on their own, because each type has specific purposes and abilities, and lacks others..some can only swim not eat, vice versa.. what makes them different from anything ? I love them, thank you. I love them. It's like a train, a city

I also saw these lithographs on the wikipedia page. It was so funny to me, because the person who made them, Ernst Haeckel, did so much other stuff in his life that in his main wikipedia article there was barely mentions of the fact that he had a 100+ page published book of marine lithograph prints?! So funny. What a crazy life!
Thank you so much. Siphonophores made my life better. I love you. Please tell me what you think of them too.
