WIP - Álzaga Unzué Palace
In 1916, Mr. Félix Saturnino de Álzaga Unzué (1885-1974), a member of the prominent Álzaga family, commissioned the construction of this residence to Scottish architect Robert Russel Prentice, who had studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, was based in Buenos Aires since 1910, and had just started his independent career after working for the architectural firm of French architect Louis Faure-Dujarric, who graduated from the same Parisian school. Prentice had also collaborated on the design of certain important railway stations in Argentina.
The residence commissioned by Mr. Álzaga Unzué was built on his property in the Retiro neighborhood, which had been chosen by the upper class of Buenos Aires since the end of the 19th century. On May 6th of that same year, Álzaga Unzué had married Elena Peña Unzué (1892-1982) - his second cousin - at the San Agustín Parish in Buenos Aires (built in 1910 by Mercedes Baudrix de Unzué, grandmother of the bride). At that time, he was 31 years old and she was 24. One version said that the mansion had been Félix's wedding gift to his wife. The construction took four years, and they moved into the property in 1920.
The Álzaga Unzué-Peña marriage did not have children, although they had planned the bedrooms of the ones they thought were going to be born. That's why they lived with many pets, such as several dogs and birds, and entertained themselves by traveling the world frequently. The domestic staff consisted of around 20 people, including Italian chef Nicola Argentieri. The couple lived in this residence until their death, after which it remained uninhabited for several years.
In the 1970s, although the opening of the last stretch of 9 de Julio Avenue raised fears of the demolition of this property and others like the Palacio Ortiz Basualdo, the neighborhood residents resisted and ultimately the buildings were preserved.
