what are your suggestions for starter poetry for people who dont have strong reading/analysis backgrounds
I've answered this a few times so I'm going to compile and expand them all into one post here.
I think if you haven't read much poetry before or aren't sure of your own tastes yet, then poetry anthologies are a great place to start: many of them will have a unifying theme so you can hone in based on a subject that interests you, or pick your way through something more general. I haven't read all of the ones below, but I have read most of them; the rest I came across in my own readings and added to my list either because I like the concept or am familiar with the editor(s) / their work:
Staying Alive: Real Poems for Unreal Times (ed. Nick Astley) & Being Alive: The Sequel to Staying Alive (there's two more books in this series, but I'm recommending these two just because it's where I started)
The Rattlebag (ed. Seamus Heaney and Ted Hughes)

Kara and Lena try to spend a day away from everything, but it's not always that simple.

"Go, I'll be right here when you get back."
She had urged the words quietly, hesitantly.
"I'll be back — I'll be right back."
The words had seemed to stay right there in the air beside her, keeping her company as minutes became hours, as the promise of time away from the chaos of their lives started to fade below the tree line.
Kara's feet return to the ground beside her with a muted thud, the last bits of sunlight just touching the edges of the shoulders.
In her hands, Lena can see a bundle of wild heather, still damp with the earth it was pulled from, still smelling faintly of the salt air it was washed in.
"Here." Kara's hands push forward the small lavender flowers she had been holding onto so carefully. "I'm sorry I had to leave."
Lena accepts them, fingers brushing against hers as she does. A slight frown creasing her brow when she sees the small bits of dirt and blood staining her hands.
"They're beautiful," Lena reassured her, her voice softening as she shifts the flowers to one hand, reaching into her jacket pocket with the other, pulling out a navy handkerchief embroidered with a small 'L' in gold thread.
Another gift from Kara.
But instead of wrapping the flowers in the fabric, she takes Kara's hand in hers.
"You don't have to," she tries to protest but offers no real resistance.
"I know." Lena mused simply, avoiding eye contact as she continued anyway
She rubs away the blood from her knuckles.
Thinks of all the violence she has seen.
Wipes the dirt from the creases of her palms.
Thinks of her picking flowers one by one.
All the strength it must take to keep fighting.
All the control it must take to still be gentle.
Kara shifts her weight from one foot to the other, suddenly shy beneath Lena's perceptive gaze. The wind rustles through the trees around them, sending a shower of leaves spiraling to the ground.
She folds the handkerchief and tucks it back into her pocket, her fingers lingering for a moment on the smooth fabric.
"Thank you," Kara whispered, her cheeks flushing with a hint of embarrassment.
She clears her throat, nudges her chin towards the flowers Lena is holding.
"Purple heather is supposed to symbolize beauty and admiration... I just - I just wanted you to know how much I care about you — how much I love you — that's what this whole day was supposed to be about really. I didn't want it to end without telling you that."
Lena looks down at them again, eyes searching through the hues of lavender and lilac and plum before carefully pulling out one along with two stems of white that had found their way in between, the fragile petals almost translucent in the fading sunlight.
"Scottish legend says that white heather is a symbol of protection," Lena explained, as she twisted them together and then wove the flowers into Kara's hair, fingers brushing against her temple, tracing the curve of her cheekbone before retreating once again.
"I love you too you know." Lena smiles, leaning in to press a soft kiss just below the flowers now intertwined in her hair. "I'm also not above asking for a little help keeping you safe."

okay but pls say more about codependent situationship jopzer in purror & erebark, i crave lore.
you know that part in seaside improvisations by richard siken where its like "tell me you love this, tell me you're not miserable" well thats like the tagline of jopzier in my catboy au. "tell me the life we've built together is something that makes you happy, tell me i'm not a huge disappointment to you, tell me that being together is enough even if you can't tell me you love me" and this mutual desire for a happy ending but the inability to articulate those desires. lore under cut:
in this au crozier has decades worth of feelings that he's always turned a blind eye to in favour of work, and then all of that is over after the failed expedition. no more work, no more exploration, no more social climbing. even the possibility of marrying sophia has disappeared (though crozier refuses to voice this outloud) and all he has is a half renovated cottage in fuckall nowhere and 5 catboys that he never asked for, one of which might be the greatest thing that's ever happened to him (and thus something doesn't deserve). and jopson knows crozier is unhappy but he doesnt know how to fix it, and crozier is unhappy because he feels like he's holding jopson back. he saved jopson from the arctic, mutinied for jopson, quit drinking for jopson and left the navy for jopson, and now jopson's doing what? stuck taking care of an aging old man who can't even afford to get him a tea set that isn't secondhand. theres a part of him that wishes jopson would leave, that thinks he could convince fitzjames to adopt jopson and make him undergo lieutenant training, but there's another part of him where, if jopson himself asked to leave, would be so incredibly angry that he would probably start drinking again.
meanwhile jopson has what could be charitably described as a deep gratitude for the man that changed his life and uncharitably described as an oedipus complex (which is what hickey calls it at every opportunity) with full awareness that he can never act on his feelings because it would legitimately ruin crozier's life. and hes hidden it well from crozier (because crozier doesn't know what normal catboy behaviour is like) but his possessiveness is obvious to nearly everyone else, whether they interpret that as love or duty or both depends on the person. at one point in tasmania crozier is called away by sir john so sophia and jopson are alone together and sophia stares at the door crozier just left through and says smth like "i think his greatest fantasy is for me to be his wife and for you to be the creature who rests beside me, half guard-dog, half lap-cat, as we wait for him to come home" and then she looks at jopson and smiles and says "maybe that's your fantasy too" and jopson is too stunned to respond.
in summary its just a constant cycle of "tell me what you want" "i want what you want" "i dont know what i want" for jopzier here, neither of them can answer the "what are we" question, thats their codependent situationship realness

Yep, you're so right...a drabble for nailing the entire dynamic right on the head.
Henry's mouth is dry, their expression one of surprise, of confusion, their gaze locked onto you. Nothing's said, and for the briefest of moments, you think he didn't hear you.
The silence is shattered by laughter, Henry's shoulders shaking as he tries to stifle the noise, a hand rising.
"What's there not to understand, buttercup?" Henry asks, his tone earnest. "I love you. I love you so much. I would do anything for you."
You're shaking your head, your posture stiff as you hug your arms, eyes downcast. "That's my point; I'm scared of what you mean by that. What wouldn't you do?"
This gives Henry pause, his head tilting slightly. "What's there to be scared of? You know I would never hurt you."
You're shaking before you realize it, teeth chattering as you force your words out. "But would you hurt someone else, Henry?"
It's silent again, but this time, the silence is awkward, heavy. You can't stop shaking; you know Henry's answer already, and that terrifies you.
"Of course I would." Henry's voice is low, a strange gleam to their eyes. "You're everything to me, buttercup."
Your lip's quivering, your throat closing in on itself. "That's not right, Henry. That's not right..."
You can't bring yourself to ask the quiet part aloud; and yet, upon looking upon Henry, upon really, really looking at him, you're more than certain you already know the answer.
If you really, really picture it, it's all too easy to imagine blood coating the lengths of Henry's arms.

hello ! my name is third king january but feel free to call me third or january ( or any other nickname you'd like ) ! i'm a twenty two year old black lesbian pursuing a graphic design major with a minor in art history and creative writing—considering media studies—who uses they/them pronouns !
ദ്ദി ˉ͈̀꒳ˉ͈́ )✧ :⠀ 🍓. i think this may be my third or fourth time trying out a writeblr, but the other attempts didn't go well since i was busy and didn't put a lot of effort into interacting with my mutuals </3. this time around, i really want to be a part of the community and be more supportive of everyone's writing! my goal for this account is to share my wips, any writing, and keep motivated to do more than just stare at a blank document for hours </3.
i'm a big reader and i plan to share some of my recently reads on this blog. please feel free to send me book recs if you think it's something i might like or if you just wanna ramble about something you read that you really liked! my favorite genres are horror, magical realism, fairy tales and fantasy. i love beautiful prose that's almost poetic and ambiguous writing that has you questioning everything until the grand reveal.
my favorite books are: bunny by mona awad, deathless by catherine m. valente, and how to win the time war by amal el-mohtar and max gladstone. the last two books helped me understand the kind of writing style i want to strive for as did poetry !! i don't have a whole lot of fav poems, but worm king's lullaby by richard siken is one that's always spinning in my head.
alongside reading i like manga, webtoons, videogames, and anime. my all time favorite anime is hyouka followed by angel beats and clannad. my favorite webtoon is omniscient reader's viewpoint and i can't recommend it enough. it's soosososo good! ( i started with the webtoon before switching to the novel bc i was too impatient to wait for the updates ) my favorite games are the halo series and oxenfree.
other interests of mine include music, drawing, art, watching youtube videos, journaling, horror movies, and sleeping 😴. i have a few graphic novels / webcomics in my wips so i'm learning how to draw to make them a reality! i also have a video game that's tied to another wip so i'm getting into coding as well !

the story follows two ex band mates reconnecting in their adult years after they parted ways when their front man signed a major record deal.

sisyphus stars three siblings at the center of a conspiracy 1!1!1 the oldest sibling, an astronaut, goes missing during a privately funded space mission embarking to a new planet found in the solar system. i wouldn't call this a greek retelling, but it does a feature a lot of nods to classic greek myths!

atwe follows the mother of a teen superhero getting revenge after her kid is killed by an unknown villain. though it's my own special take on superheroes featuring my personal criticisms on teen heroes, it's also a study on family—in particular—distant family relations and saying i love you a little too late.
📝 𖹭 ⠀ֵ⠀ wip four ; march marchen ( title will definitely change )
march marchen is my sort of alice in wonderland / fairy tale retelling that follows an unnamed girl in what might be wonderland trying to figure out who she is and who she isn't. ft parallel worlds, escapism, the fear of childhood, and the fear of adulthood.
📝 𖹭 ⠀ֵ⠀ wip five ; neapolitan ( title will definitely change )
neapolitan is a magical girl webcomic / graphic novel. the story follows a trio of girls becoming the successors of a long line of ice cream inspired magical girls. ft a bright fun palette, gore, and cannibalism! though it's a webcomic, i intend to give it a novelization from the perspective of a different set of magical girls.
