Penelope getting all weepy when Eloise confronts her irks me because it reminded me of Sierra Burgess is a Loser when Sierra “apologizes” to Veronica saying how she’s a sunflower but Veronica is a rose. As my friend pointed out roses and sunflowers are equally beautiful flowers but that’s not the point. Both Penelope and Sierra hide behind and are absolved because of their insecurities and are so allergic to accountability.
Context matters, but just I don’t like characters who are never meaningfully challenged on the whole, “sure, I screwed you over but you need to understand I’m sad,” thing because Effie we all got pain.

so i was rewatching sierra burgess is a loser because as someone who is plus-sized and was in high school, it's something i relate to so, so much (minus the cute romance), and i noticed that in this final scene where sierra and veronica are hugging, veronica is wearing a SUNFLOWER RING. and that just makes me so emotional..
because it's one thing to tell your plus-size friends that they really are beautiful despite the stupid stigma of society (which no matter how true it is, they will never believe) and it's another to show them that they are beautiful BECAUSE of the way they are
Tumblr media
maybe i'm making this into more than it is because i want so badly for it to help me heal, but this movie (and especially the song "sunflower") were already so touching to me and veronica's whole-hearted love and support just makes it all the more meaningful

Movies where they wannna make me feel sorry for the pretty attractive girl, really piss me entirely off. They make it seem like because this attractive girl has a terrible home life or because she has been through some traumatic things, that excuses her being an asshole to other girls. That somehow now excuses her for being a bully. Absolutely Not
This is the effects of pretty privilege. So because this girl is pretty, people wanna make excuses for her behavior and defend it.
Sierra Burgess is a Loser is a movie that did this. I'm dumbfounded that so many people defended Veronica and just simply forgot that this girl bullied and made fun of Sierra all the time. Sierra has issues. Every plus size girl who has been bullied has them, but she was not the enemy in this. That was Veronica because all of this bullshit started with her. If I had a chance to embarrass my bully in high school, I would 100% take it. I would feel no ounce or regret and I would laugh in the face of people who had a problem with it.
I'm sick of this ideal that bully kids must take the high road.
FUCK THAT

it’s been a few years and i’m still thinking about the sierra burgess controversy. like yes it was a terrible netflix original teen flick but the fact that the main response to it was ‘but if it was two men tricking a woman we’d all call it sexist… standard feminism, right?’ is so insane given that it was openly, obviously, blatantly, a gender-flipped cyrano de bergerac. like down to the name. i’ve not seen any comparable response to non-genderflipped adaptations (which do exist! #roxy is just the same thing with boys!) and i just can’t imagine why

i guess i’m just watching mediocre netflix rom coms now. in conclusion, “sierra burgess is a loser” was underwhelming. it had more than a few insensitive jokes in it and it lacked any real imagination. it’s like the production team sat down and was like “hey what if we made a movie where the main character is tall, overweight, and smart” and they didn’t provide much depth to the film aside from the that. i feel like it could have been a spectacular movie but the writing sunk the quality of the project. i’m also not a big fan of the trope “she was perfect because she found herself BUT she’s even more perfect now that the hot male actor likes her” so that kind of ruined it for me if i’m being honest.
