A Snippet Of Being A Barghest

Being a supernatural dog is weird. When it comes to being a barghest, I feel more at home with canine therians as a whole rather than otherkin with some exception. I wouldn't say my barghest identity is theriomythic though, it's in an odd grey area. What a barghest even is exactly can vary depending on who you're asking: a monstrous dog, a spirit, something else. The identity is naturally very animalistic, but for me it's the same way a werewolf is animalistic. The human side is always there. Like werewolves, barghests have been reported to shapeshift and take human form. It's because of this (and other things) that I feel very connected to werewolves without being one.

I don't often find other supernatural black dogs, and when I do they tend to be the more well known ones. Black shucks, church grims. I still find it really nice seeing they're out there, but I still wish I knew of more barghests.

Sometimes I feel invalid for being so "tame" when a barghest is "supposed to be" a deadly and terrifying monstrous dog, then I remember it's fine for me to have my own personality independent from what is expected. I'm not physically a barghest, so of course I'm not going to be exactly like one. I was raised by and around humans, I grew up around domesticated animals. Besides, even if monstrous a barghest is still a dog. Even if supernatural black dogs aren't all friendly and tame it doesn't mean we won't ever act like a dog.

Out of all dog breeds I'd describe myself as looking like a pure black german shepherd, with red eyes. The eyes can vary, they can be pure red with no visible pupil, or just the iris being red. The hue can shift, flickering like fire. Sometimes as bright as fire. My teeth and claws at times might be bigger and sharper. For me, barghests aren't much of a "solid" sort of creature in the first place due to the alleged shapeshifting. Combining that with much of my alterhuman identity revolving around shapeshifting, naturally the details of what feels the most accurate at the time can vary over time.

hi, id like a little input from other systems who are therians/otherkin.

so, for quite a while i believed i had a black shuck kintype. i had memories, phantom shifts, everything. but around six months ago, i became aware of an alter who was basically the embodiment of my black shuck kintype. it has those memories, it looks the way i believe i did, everything.

so heres ny conundrum: was i ever really a black shuck kin, or was that just it all along? is it possible that when it split off, it took all of those characteristics, or is it possible that it came first and i, not realizing that i was part of a system, just assumed that was a kintype?

Hey- May I get a pendulum reading for being black-shuck kin and werewolf kin? I really need some help figuring or more like configuring these kins? I've been having signs, urges, dreams of these creatures and I just want some kind configuring- hope It's not too much to ask 😞

aw well im really glad you like our blog friend! thank you so much! your kin seems incredibly cool! i love cryptids a lot and they always seem fascinating to me, and yours is especially cool because its a big black wolf!!! i bet you were very fearsome in your time as the black shuck. im very sorry you have been feeling so lonely lately. it can get tough when it seems like nobody from your past life is anywhere to be found. especially if that person was your mate. i definitely understand why you would be sad about that, as well as missing your body. however, this life is also a brand new one! you can make new friends, and find a new person to be your mate. it obviously wont be the same, but sometimes new things can be even better than the old! i know change can be scary too, but just think of it as a bunch of brand new experiences you get to have. i bet there were many things you couldnt do as the black shuck, like play video games and go to stores and watch movies. now you can do all those things!i know it can be hard, but sometimes its better to focus on all the good things that come out of this. and perhaps in the future you can find the mate you have been missing! im not sure the relationship will be the same, but maybe you can find someone even more wonderful, who can make you just as happy. 

also sure, you arent a big fearsome wolf cryptid anymore, but now you are a completely different being, and that can be really cool to explore! you can do so many things with your new body you probably couldnt before. sure you might not be big and scary and dark anymore, but now you can interact more with others because of it! also, you have hands now, whereas im assuming as the shuck you did not. you can now hold things and do many things you probably couldnt before. i know its difficult and lonely, but i believe in you! i just know this life can be good in its own ways, even if its very different from the one you had before! just do your best to focus on the positive, and the loneliness wont seem anywhere near as overwhelming as it once was! i know you can do it friend. i believe in you. ~mod spooky ♥

Hello! I’m a questioning folkloric black dog kin and you’re one of the few active otherkin blogs I’ve found that’s kin with something similar. How do you recommend finding like-kinned folks? I’m quite a loner by nature but I’d greatly appreciate interactions with other church grims/black shucks/barghests. The hellhounds are fine fellows as well.

I'm a loner as well but j know the feeling, sometimes it just feels lonely not seeing your kind or those similar around. In general I've struggled to find other folkloric black dogs with active accounts, especially other barghests.

Those I have found have mostly been through coincidence (coming across their account while not actively looking for black dogkin for example), but I have found some by trying to search through relevant tags such as barghestkin, black dogkin, black shuckkin, church grimkin etc. or by searching things like "black dog alterhuman", "black dog otherkin" and variations of it.

I think you're more likely to come across other black dogs without actively looking if you often actively look at 'kin content. I've found 'kin discord servers can be good as well if you find a decent one that you like as I think they're good places for talking about your experiences, though currently I'm only in one alterhuman server. So even if you can't find other folkloric black dogs, you can find people who are supportive and interested in your experiences.

I haven't found any discord servers or other spaces specifically for folkloric black dogs yet, but there could be one somewhere as spaces specifically for a "theme" of theriotypes/kintypes/fictotypes aren't too uncommon.

i remember i could change my form.

i had the default form of a big black dog. but i had control over how grotesque or "monstrous" i looked. i could close and merge my extra eyes into my fur, could cover up some of the exposed bones (aside from the exposed skull, which stayed the same). i could add heads and limbs if i desired.

whenever i would come across a child's spirit that i had to lead, i would make myself look as "normal" as i possibly could. i didnt want to scare them, of course.

if i came across a particularly wretched and hellbound soul, i could make myself look like some terrible monster, instill some fear in them.

if rival hellbeasts entered my territory, i could make myself look big and grotesque and intimidating.

i could add legs to give myself (perhaps an unfair) advantage if i was racing and playing with a friend - what, hellhounds can have fun too, you know?
