so according to the rules and from what I understand, if you are the child of two powerful demons or a powerful being, it doesn't matter, you have to achieve everything yourself because the skills and magic will not be inherited to you, maybe only the strength, but beyond that, you inherit nothing and must achieve it for yourself.
I understand that Chenxiang, being a demigod, only inherited strength but had to train anyway. Are there exceptions, or is this the case for everyone? What about Redboy? Or the son of the white snake?
Well in a sense. I have said before that it does affect on what pieces you are that also affects what kind of power you are inclined to have. Like the Scorpion Demon having poison and the Yellow-Tusk Elephant King being able to use his trunk. The same could be said with demon offspring if they have any genetic effects of their partners. Red Boy most likely got his fire performance from his mother Princess Iron Fan having her cave located on Flame Mountain and being able to control them with her wind powers. But when it comes to things like gaining power then YES they would have to train for that on their own. It's like that they are born with the POSSIBILY with being as great as their partners but they are not born automatically with that power, they must train, which could be easier for them in all honestly.
Chenxiang had more natural strength but he didn't know how to use it and thus, in his earlier versions, accidentally killed another boy. He had to be trained by the Thunder God (or Sun Wukong now) in order to master his strength and have the skills and techniques to save his mother. A bow and arrow are a strong weapon to someone with perfect eyesight, but useless if they don't know how to draw the string.
Red Boy is said in the text that he trained with his powers as well, took him 300 years to master his Sahamdi fire, he wasn't just born knowing how to use it. He had strong parents and thus had an advantage but he still practiced long and hard.
Tumblr media
Xu Shilin is a later addition to the Legend of the White Snake as the story usually ends in tragedy with White Snake and Green Snake being caught by Fahai who trapped them in a pagoda. It is in the later version does White Snake gives birth to Xu Shilin and he grows up to become strong enough to save his mother from the pagoda. I cannot find anything that really gives a clear story on how or if he was ever trained but from what I gathered that "His filial piety moved heaven, and What Snake was able to get out of the tower and see the sun again." Hard to say if he had anything magical powers to really aid his saving mother or just that his spirit was enough to do so.
From this we can gather that Red Boy, who received formal training in the span of 300 years, is so strong not because of his heritage solely. His parents being power demons does gives him that greater potential but he was only able to live up to that potential because of his hundreds of years of training, making him a threat to even Sun Wukong. Chenxiang was given far less time (I've seen him training from 1 to 3 years) BUT IN THAT TIME he was able to go head to head with Erlang Shen, one of the greatest fighters in heaven. I would like to note that Chenxiang did have both his Axe of Pangu and the Lotus Lantern on his side and perhaps those heavenly treasures were able to help his fight as well. Xu Shilin has such little information and no formal training despite being half-demon half-human. Most likely he would have great potential but I cannot find any stories of him fighting Fahai head-on or not and thus cannot say how powerful his true strength can be. What I can say is that without a teacher he was given no feats of strength or anything of physical or magical powers. To be this suggests that without proper training he could not live up to that potential.
From this, we can gather that having cultivated parents can give you a potential boost, but without former training then it cannot be utilized. Erlang and Chengxiang are prime example of how having a cultivated parent can increase your potential, Erlang Shen being one (if not the) strongest gods in heaven, and Chenxiang being able to learn and cultivate in accelerated speeds. Both being quite young in their training to save their mothers. Red Boy having two powerful demons was able to utilize his potential though it took far longer, centuries at that (we don't see a lot of natural-born demons and I personally believe that it is harder for demons to conceive a child with other demons compared to having a child with a human, hence why they are target more often for spouses (that is just a theory)). And sadly I have no examples of what power Xu Shilin could have had as he had no formal training and thus what potential he could have can only be speculated.

I’m watching you are desire right now and as a big kuch kuch hota hai enthusiast I really wish they actually watched it in the cinema and not just use it for comedic relief bc I just know shen juan would relate so hard to rahul. Both having a best friend who they deep down had romantic feelings for, said best friend leaving and cutting off contact, both going through a period of grief and missing their emotional support friend due to the lack of contact like it just makes so much sense he already seemed to like the movie in my head he’s a #1 fan now

since im at it and since im obsessed: 海市蜃楼 (mirage)
you’ve gotten used to pushing and pulling; that’s the performance of a sentimentalist
hiding behind a mask, acting deaf and mute
I try to keep my expression natural, pretending to be elegant
and leave behind what I cannot take
...
The deserted navy blue sea attempts to swallow
the vanity and prosperity of my dreams;
this mirage is like a fairy tale
painting the years in my eyes

New Post has been published on https://china-underground.com/2012/11/20/21-crazy-buildings-in-china/
21 crazy buildings in China
Tumblr media
Chinese website 163.com compiled a gallery of the 21 craziest buildings built in recent decades in China.
In recent years, cities’ urban development become a hot topic because these constructions are related to a large amount of money. Many times, mainly because constructors and local authorities distinguish these buildings from classic skyscrapers, they present whimsical shapes, which also lead to an increase in construction costs.
In this gallery, there are public buildings, Chinese private companies buildings, and also copycats of famous western architectural designs.
The weirdest buildings in China
Tumblr media
Shenyang Finance and Trade Development Zone, and in particular the building of Fangyuan Mansion. This building with a cylindrical shape was designed like a coin because the owners work with money. On 10th January 2012, CNN classified the structure in the top ten of the ugliest buildings in the world. The building was designed by renowned Taiwanese architect CY Lee designer of the Taipei 101 Tower. CNN reported that Fangyuan Mansion tries to merge Eastern and Western styles, but this merger has not a harmonious appearance.
Tumblr media
Cuiping Wuliangye, Yibin city, Sichuan Province, a company’s factory that produces liquor has a building shaped like a bottle.
Tumblr media
Yiling, District of Yichang City, in Hubei Province, the offices of a local group is located in a building shaped like a bottle.

On 15 December 2009, in Hebei, Yanjiao, was opened the most shocking hotel: the Hotel of the Emperor, with the appearance of three gods. The structure of 41.6 meters in height has been designed in 2001. The hotel is classified as “the largest pictographic building” and therefore entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the best project, the largest in the world which is both a sculpture and a building.
Tumblr media
Many Chinese Internet users have expressed their disapproval of “the East Gateway of Suzhou” structure still under construction.
Tumblr media
The list included also Taihu Pearl – China Huzhou Sheraton Haikou Resort.
Tumblr media
Exterior design of the building Linda Hai Square with the shape of fish wasn’t appreciated; located on Dongsi ring.
Tumblr media
Sanya, Hainan Island. “Phoenix Island Real Estate” sells apartments t an average price of 90,000 RMB per square meter.
Tumblr media
Nanjing, Yuhua. The government building is similar to the Capitol in Washington DC.
Tumblr media
A Wenling People’s Court Building is similar to the White House.
Tumblr media
The second ring road east of Changsha, Hunan Province, the customs office resembles the U.S. Capitol.
Tumblr media
In Fujian, Fuqing was built in Lin Yi Park an “Eiffel Tower” tower renamed Tiancheng.
Tumblr media
In Jiangsu province, Funing County, Seongnam, in the park White Swan has created a cottage reminiscent of Sydney Opera House Swan Harbor.
Tumblr media
Shandong Rizhao water tower is called “Sail of the Century”.
Tumblr media
Chongqing, Guotai Art Center, Center of Bashu Culture Art, which will be completed later this year. CFP
Tumblr media
Henan province, Yichuan, netizens have reported that the project of the north gate of the city looks like a belt.
Tumblr media
Beijing Olympic Park watchtower, still under construction, consists of five independent towers with different heights: the main tower reaches a height of 244.35 meters. Many have compared the structure of five big “pins.”
Tumblr media
Located in the south-east of Beijing, on the fourth road ring, Zhuoen Sen Oriental.
Tumblr media
Chongqing

Again in Chongqing. Netizens think that a recent construction project look-alike a zip pullover.

How different boys planet trainees would ask you on a date; a thread!
Tumblr media
sung hanbin, gunwook, ricky, taerae, hong hai, keita & gyuvin x gn!reader (all separately) (established friendships with all of them)
genre: tooth rotting fluff, implied school au with hai and gyuvin
wc: 2.4k
a/n: for my friends lani yen and lulu 🫶
Park Gunwook
Tumblr media
swore he was a rizz god
not that he was overcompensating, gunwook was just a confident man!
“im an attractive guy! i dont see why i wouldnt have a shot?”
that was, until he met you
the reality was.. he was anything but a rizzler 💀
giggling like a schoolgirl at a joke you had made, gunwook covered his mouth and quickly cleared his throat. he was not gonna give himself away! in his head, the stone face could come off cool and mysterious. like, he was imagining your very inner monologue! ‘woah! this guys different.. he doesn’t laugh easily. i wonder what he finds funny… i wanna kiss him right at this moment!’ yup! that was definitely you and surely *not* his own thoughts. just to really sell his tough guy-sona, gunwook knew he had to make eye contact. intimidation worked on his dog, why wouldnt it work on people too! although.. he didn’t remember his dogs eyes being this mesmerizing…
“gunwook! are you even listening??”
“i would love to.”
your eyebrows furrowed in confusion, causing gunwook to snap back to reality. he sheepishly smiled, blinking a couple times before laughing.
“sorry i-“
“you’d love to what??”
gunwook laughed. not the ‘😭😭’ or the ‘😂’ laugh, the ‘ha.ha.ha’ laugh. he waved his hand, clicking his tongue while trying to think of a bluff. not like that! he would not love to take you on a date and most definitely would not love to date you! so why couldnt he say that out loud?? his mouth seemed to betray him, coughing out pathetically, “ha! what do you… how.. youre.. are you free this friday?”
You chuckled, a sound that melted his heart and any remaining tough-sona left in him. dammit! where did he go wrong? gunwook swore his intimidation was foolproof! still, he couldnt help but shyly bat his eyelashes as you responded to his simple request.
“id love to.”
Ricky Shen
Tumblr media
ricky doesn’t strike me as someone who’d make the first move
“i dont chase, i attract” sort of mentality
it usually worked out for him
that was.. until he saw you getting too close to someone else
you barely made it around the corner before being jumpscared by the tall blonde, who was leaning against the wall waiting for you. his eyes practically burned with envy when you appeared in his view next to them
he frowned, looking at you and simply ignoring their existence. “you ready?”
“for..?” you tilted your head in confusion, giving him a slight side eye.
“Our date.” ricky frowned, no hint of sarcasm in his voice. this only proved to confuse you more, giving a couple of hard blinks before being dragging along by the taller male. you quickly waved bye to your friend, whisper-yelling at ricky once you were down the hallway.
“are you serious right now?!” you yanked your hand away, making him stop. he turned around, still looking as stoic as ever. ricky nodded, pulling out his card.
“a steakhouse or italian?”
Sung Hanbin
Tumblr media
a very romantic man
wants everything to be perfect. you already know he bought a box of chocolates and everything
“so what if its cheesy? its sweet!”
he had valentine’s day marked on his calendar, hyping himself up with each day be crossed off leading up to it.
hanbin gulped, nervously fidgeting with the gifts he bad bought you. you already had a foot out of the electric doors of the building he was waiting at the entrance of. your eyes lit up seeing him, awkwardly waving while walking up to the boy.
“hey!”
“hanbin! whatre doing here? are these.. for me?” you look up at him curiously, eyes softening upon seeing his exicted smile. hanbin was quick to nod, handing you the flowers. then the chocolates. then a teddy bear. then the bag of candles and bathbomb. than the valentines card he handmade. all you could do was shake your head in shock. “you didn’t have to..”
“but i wanted to!” and its true! hanbin had spent so much time and energy into trying to make everything perfect that he came across overbearing. you had gotten used to it with his absurd amount of gift giving, bit even this left you in awe. he resembled a puppy, his imaginary tail wagging excitedly.
the sight was something you couldnt help but shyly chuckle at. “well thank you. happy valentines” hanbin.. hadn’t planned this far. his brain was sent into overdrive trying to find an appropriate segway to pop the question. he found himself opening his mouth, but not words coming out.
you tilt your head at hanbin, waiting to see what else he has in store. knowing himself, he was surprised he didn’t end up buying all of korea just for you. he awkwardly held out his hand, gesturing for you to take it (how he thought you would with your arms filled, youre not quite sure)
“shall we?”
Terazono Keita
Tumblr media
doesn’t hesitate
“what good would stalling do?”
such straightforward thinking
“if you like me, you like me! if you dont, you dont”
he never second guessed his philosophy until he met you
keita shook his head in disbelief, shoving the singular flower he had bought into his friends face. “what do you mean? i thought you couldnt go wrong with flowers??”
zhang hao smiled condescendingly, pointing at the shriveled petals. “not when you had them for *weeks* now and never had the guts to actually use them” he responded flatly. keita clicked his tongue, mumbling “everyone finds them romantic hao…”
“i dont find a half wilted daisy very charming” keitas head was already ready to retort, but he quickly hushed hao away once he saw you walking towards their direction. he smiled, his personality flipping a switch as he met you in the middle.
“oh! keita, here’s that cd you let me borrow“
“nah, keep it.” he hummed, quickly shoving the white daisy in his back pocket. keita was sure hed come around to giving it to you next time! just like the last 5 times..
your eyes beamed, your grip on the plastic softly tightening. “..really??” keita nodded, taking in account your excitement. “what, do you like that band?” your pupils were practically sparkling, nodding wordlessly.
“not like. *love*” jackpot! fuck the flowers, keita had a new plan.
“well y’know.. they’re coming around town next month.” he shrugged nonchalantly, glancing at you to gauge your reaction.
“deadass??”
“ill buy a ticket if you do”
you laughed, nodding along in agreement. “alright, sure! tell me which seat you get so i can be next to you”
“okay, why dont we talk it out over dinner?” you were left unable to resist his not-so-hidden advances. his cheesy 😎 expression had you giggling like a child. “you bet. should i wait for you?”
he waved you off, shaking his head quickly. “ill catch up with you.” after you exchanged thumbs ups and you had vanished, keita turned around to zhang hao with a giddy smile.
“am i smooth or what???”
hao sarcastically clapped
“only took you 6 tries”
Kim Gyuvin
Tumblr media
so thoughtful and organized
“i spend too much time thinking about you to not be this thorough!”
and thorough he is
has a backup plan for his backup plan
now he just needs to courage to actually do it
gyuvin mumbled under his breath the speech he has rehearsed for when you left class. he nodded once satisfied, proud of the script he had memorized. that night the boy had created a chart of every scenario and outcome depending on what you’d respond with. once he felt satisfied, gyuvin wrote all the answers and cue words onto his hand with some pen. even with all his planning, he still feeling those butterflies as hard as ever watching you leave your classroom.
“you know that bowling alley that opened up recently?”
“why, wanna go together?”
“oh it’s just down by- what?”
this was NOT a scenario he had memorized, and gyuvin quickly glanced to his hand to see what he should say.
“i asked if you wanted to go to the bowling alley with me.”
gyuvin hadn’t found his answer in time, and decided to just wing it.
“oh! umm, it’s just-“
alright winging it over. his brain seemed to turn to mush in your presence and without a guide he’d honestly end up scaring you away. what he *didnt* expect was you scaring him away instead.
you gently grabbed his wrist, pulling it closer to you to read what was on his palm. “what is this?” he quickly yanked his hand away in embarrassment, shoving it in his pocket. “oh y’know! just uh.. to help me on a test next period.. ?”
“i didn’t know your test had my name on it.” you chuckled at him, seemingly very amused at his now completely flushed cheeks. not only did he have your name written about a thousand times, he put hearts around each one. gyuvin opened his mouth to respond, but words seemed to fail him. you put a hand on his shoulder, bringing him back to reality a bit.
“gyu. you never answered my first question.”
“what is it?”
“do you. want to. go to the bowling alley. together?”
Dang Hong Hai
Tumblr media
so shy
like please save him
he’ll talk about every little interaction while twirling his hair
“i borrowed a pencil!!” “… a pencil?”
fails to actually be able to speak to you though
hai had always been awkward when talking to you, so it was no surprise when you waved to him in the hallway he said nothing. it was also not a surprise when he never mentioned it later in class. what *was* a surprise was seeing him talking with a friend at the end of the hallway, resting against the locker nonchalantly. the nerve of that guy! and he didn’t even seem to notice your waving. you’re not sure why he suddenly switched up, but you’re gonna get answers out of him.
the answer you were not expecting is walking up to them and hearing your very name come out of his mouth. “we’re basically friends now!”
“really? arent you using the term too broadly here.”
“no i swear! we even wave to each other in the hallway now!” he cheered, seeming to gush at the idea. his friend pretended to be shocked, dramatically putting a hand over his mouth.
“woah, we’re taking big steps here. from pencils to waving?? might as well be official”
hai frowned, shaking his head. “i’m telling you all that’s left is asking for the insta!”
“you downloaded insta just for-“
“what??” that’s all you could say, caught completely off guard by their conversation. honghais mouth fell open, slowly turning to you with a :0 expression. “how much of that did you hear…?”
you looked between him and his friend, then him and his friend, back and forth back and forth.
honghais face was completely pink, burying his face into his hands. there was a moment of silence between you two.. both at a loss for words on what to say.
“i’m *so* sorry! i just-“
“you could’ve just asked..” you mumbled, pulling out a paper and quickly writing something down.
“please just- forget this! again i’m so-“ you placed the paper against his chest, waving to him before turning around and walking to class.
“well, you fumbled.” hai quickly hit his friends chest, looking at the paper in a panic.
on it laid your insta and number with a smiley face.
“let’s hang out :)”
Kim Taerae
Tumblr media
always wondering how you won’t pick up on his flirting
the flirting in question: sending you tiktoks he finds funny
one of his usuals is making songs for you and having you tell him what you think
at this point, he wants to get straight to the point and finally pop the question. his method of choice is through song like always
the two of you had picked a spot to hang out together, to let taerae “show a new song he’s been working on” for the most part it was true! and you had never questioned his intention for the serenades, chalking it up to ‘he liked the genre!’
taerae began the rhythm, humming along to the guitar he began to play. you nodded along, closing your eyes to truly listen to the music. the lyrics were a lot more direct then normal, straight up sounding like a cheesy love confession. when you heard the strings no longer make a noise, you opener you eyes and began clapping.
“your lyricism is improving! it’s a lot more poetic this time!” you noted, earning a chuckle from the boy.
“are you curious why it’s better?”
you shrugged. “i guess. what is it?”
“this time i had someone in mind~” he gives you a look, one that screaming there’s more questions he was begging you to ask.
“is that right? who’s the lucky one” you entertained, resting your hand on the palm of your hand. your elbow rested on your knee, giving taerae your utter attention.
“guess.”
you jokingly started to look around you two, examining everyone else walking around the park. squinting, you pretending to consider some options in the crowd, only to turn back to him with a cheeky grin. one last glance from the left and right, you landed on one last option. you slowly raised your head out of your palm, pointing to yourself with only half sincerity. taerae shyly nodded, giving you all the confirmation you needed without saying a single word being exchanged between you two.
“seriously?” you pointed at yourself with more emphasis, and he softly laughed before pointing to you as well. you both continued to feed each other giggles, seeming to telepathically communicate. you finally cleared your throat, trying to silence all the leftover snickers. “well? what’re trying to say mr. singer?”
taerae straightened his back, running his hand through all the strings of his guitar before saying in a sing-songy voice (that did not go with the riff at all) “will you go out with me? ♪”
you began to cackle, clapping in laughter at his cute nature. you pretended to ponder the question, tapping your chin with an index finger. “sorry what was that? i didn’t quite catch it.”
“will you go out with me? ♪”
you leaned over to him, plucking a random string and mimicking his singing.
“yes i will ♪”

ABOUT. here's the thing about soulmates, once you meet the one that is meant for you, you start to age. the biological clock starts to tick, and you are no longer a fresh faced 20 year old. years go by, and next thing you know it, you've grown old and wrinkly – right next to the love of your life. y/n hated this concept.
y/n has had many soulmates in her lifetime. chapter zero explores the soulmates that came before she stopped believing in the concept entirely.
⋆୨♡୧ series masterlist/about the series. ⋆୨♡୧
Tumblr media
You used to believe in the concept of soulmates.
It could be a beautiful thing, really. In theory, you build your entire future with this person, remaining young until you meet the one that is meant for you. In this world, your biological clock remains frozen – physical and mental aging included.
Life doesn’t start unless you have your other half along with you. Your soulmate.
Growing up, you hear and experience multiple love stories around you. You are taught to look forward to this life changing moment, watching out for the tell-tale signs of your other half. Your chest tightens around them, pulling you closer, drawing you in. Others say it’s as if the universe is physically trying to draw you closer together. But you liken it more to a ‘gut feeling’; There’s no other way to describe it, you just know.
That’s how you felt about Park Gunwook – the first boy you ever came to love. The first soulmate.
PARK GUNWOOK. TWELVE YEARS OLD. YEAR 1920.
Gunwook lived in the same farm town as you, and everyone knew him.
He was the favorite son in his family. He wasn’t the eldest – but he was reliable even from a very young age. He ran errands for the neighbors often and was kind to all the children and elderly. If anyone needed some help with carrying hay bale, starting a fire, or cleaning out the barn, Park Gunwook was the go-to, in which he happily carried out his duties with a large smile on his face.
You first met on a sunny day when you had trouble with your farmwork chores. You were struggling to wrangle the pigs back to their pen, tripping over the mud, and eventually falling into a large puddle.
He must have been watching over from a far, as the next thing you know an, arm is outstretched to you. “Need some help, Y/N?”
You look up to see Gunwook, and you take his hand so he can hoist you up from the mud puddle.
“You know my name?” you ask innocently. Gunwook was fifteen at the time, and you, only twelve.
“Silly girl, of course I know you.” he says as he fixes the bangs on your forehead, temporarily disheveled by the fall. At that moment, you felt it. The undeniable tug at your chest, drawing you to him. You had a feeling he was your soulmate, and your cheeks warmed at the thought.
You reckon he felt the same. For as the years went by, he stayed as a close friend to you.
When you reached fifteen years old, marrying age, he started to see you more often.
He would ask you to join him as he saddled up the horses by the stable, and you’d ask him to accompany you as you picked flowers by the meadow. You often talked about your dreams of seeing the world, leaving this small town and meeting new people. You dreamt of seeing all sorts of buildings, appreciating all kinds of art, trying new food, and experiencing new music. He always listened to you in awe, smiling at how passionate you become when talking about your dreams. He knows it’s your favorite thing to talk about.
Gunwook on the other hand, spoke about inheriting the farm land from his father. He excitedly spoke about starting a little bed and breakfast inn where he could increase tourism in the area, allowing other folk to come experience the beauty of farm life. He once showed you the blueprint sketches he had of his proposed business venture, and with a gummy smile on his face, pointed to a house right by the meadow where your favorite flowers resided, “and here’s where we would live” he said. his cheeks were flushed red, nervous to see your reaction.
It was beautiful. He had promised to build it for you, confirming that he too, felt the same about you. That the both of you were meant to be together.
“I know you’ve always wanted to get out of here. So I’ll save up for it, and we can both go on a large adventure someday” he reassures you.
But you pictured the little farmhouse by the meadow where the two of you would live, running the bed and breakfast, and caring for the horses, pigs, and sheep. You suddenly didn’t mind having this quaint little life at all.
“It’s perfect, Gunwook. I love it.” You reassured him too.
Sadly, these were the last words you shared with him. The wedding never happened, the house was never built, and you were unable to experience being loved by Gunwook like you were meant to.
Gunwook died the next morning, at the age of 18 years old. He was helping out the local lumberjack with a project in the forest, and fell victim to a horrible accident. The townspeople and your family spared you of the gory details, so you never got the full story of how he passed away.
All you remember from that day was waking up and immediately feeling an emptiness in your heart. The tug at your chest was gone, a confirmation that he was dead. You cried.
You wondered if the universe was giving you a sign, an out from the farm town life that you dreamed of leaving. And you couldn’t help but think: what a sick, twisted, way to communicate, universe.
˚。⋆⋆ ˚。⋆⋆ ˚。⋆⋆ ˚。⋆⋆ ˚。⋆⋆
You tried to continue living life as you once knew it. But everything in this small town reminded you of Gunwook. You’d often visit the meadow where your forever house with him was meant to stand, journalling or speaking to the wind – hoping Gunwook would hear you.
Your family let you grieve for two whole years, allowing the pain to fully wash over you so that you can learn to move on. Gunwook was your soulmate, everyone knew that. And at that time, the concept of having more than one soulmate was unheard of. You had already lost yours, and there was no way the universe would have another one for you.
You weren’t exactly a widow, so you would have to live life as an unmarried woman – which was difficult in that day and age. This is why your father and mother brought up the prospect of arranged marriage, even if it’s just for the sake of living comfortably. You agreed.
KIM TAERAE. SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD. YEAR 1925.
You came to know Kim Taerae at seventeen years old, when your father was sorting out marriage candidates. He had visited a local psychic who had given a shortlist of all the eligible bachelors in the area who would be the perfect match for you – insisting that ‘your soulmate would be one of the names on the list’.
You would have called her a quack if the list didn’t include a certain Kim Taerae, a young gentleman three years older, who had a voice of an angel. You officially met at a chaperoned luncheon, with both your parents and his. He was soft, kind hearted, and had a gentle nature to him.
You met several times after that before your families settled the marriage agreements. You didn’t mind marrying Taerae, in fact, you were scared to admit that he might actually be your soulmate too after all. You felt it during your first few meetings without your parents, the familiar pull at your chest. Eventually soothed by his singing and soft hums he would whisper into your hair.
“Do you think we could be soulmates, Y/N?” he asked you one evening, you were both sitting on the porch of your family home with the stars as your audience. While he strongly believed you were his soulmate, you had a hard time. You weren’t sure if the universe allowed such a thing.
“I don’t know, Taerae. I wonder if the universe is kind enough to gift you as my soulmate” you truly meant your words. He knew about your trauma with losing Gunwook, and would often accompany you as you visited his grave. He’s been patient with you, and was content with spending the rest of his life loving you, even if you weren’t soulmates. You felt the same way.
That year, Taerae turned 21 years old. He was a year older, no longer frozen at 20. Likewise, you turned 18 years old. He got his blood tested to ensure the aging wasn’t a placebo effect, that there was indeed biological change.
Everyone celebrated Taerae’s aging, the confirmation that the both of you were truly soulmates. You couldn’t believe it at first, but considered it as the universe’s way of saying ‘sorry’ for the loss of your first one.
Taerae was excited to build a future with you. He even bought a house for the two of you at the capital of the country, and you were both eager to experience city life as a married couple. But that day never came. He died from a tragic car accident, a drunk driver crashed into his vehicle when he was on his way to see you.
You woke up that day feeling like you were stuck in a recurring nighmare. You were drenched in sweat, and let out the most gut-wrenching scream of grief. You despised how this was all too familiar to you, the loss of the comforting tug at your chest. Taerae was dead, and you wailed for him.
The car company gave you a free vehicle as part of the grievance. As if a free car would cure the immense grief and anger you had been feeling. To make matters worse, the community mocked you with a new nickname: soulmate killer. Because the mere idea of being your soulmate was an automatic death sentence.
˚。⋆⋆ ˚。⋆⋆ ˚。⋆⋆ ˚。⋆⋆ ˚。⋆⋆
You hated the universe. You were angry at its seeming generosity, rather cruelty of losing two soulmates at only 18 years old.
After Taerae died, your family felt anguish for you. They had immense sympathy, and let you do whatever you wanted to do. You spent another two years grieving Taerae. Though you mostly stayed at home, staring into empty space. You still visited the meadow, this time with a guitar in hand to strum familiar melodies as you thought about the two men you loved. You felt that it was only fair to Taerae that way – if you had grieved him the same way you grieved Gunwook.
It took you years before you could even feel like yourself again.
In 1930, you would have been 23 years old. But you still look, act, and feel like a 20 year old. As if the universe was mocking your unfortunate situation. As if aging was a reward and a privilege you receive after meeting the love of your life. As if the universe was blissfully unaware that you have been ripped away from the opportunity thanks to its cruelty.
You revisited your journal entries from when you were fifteen, talking about your big dream of seeing the world. You felt cursed, and you were determined to make the most of the seemingly short life you would have. After all, if your soulmates kept dying on you – who is to say that you aren’t next?
So you took your free car, and set off on a road trip. And that’s when you met Seok Matthew, a man who sadly, understood you a little too well.
SEOK MATTHEW. TWENTY YEARS OLD. 1930.
Matthew’s soulmate also died in a car accident earlier that year. His chosen method of grieving was to travel the world – discovering new places and meeting all sorts of people. That’s how the two of you met, line dancing somewhere in the south america.
Matthew wasn’t your soulmate, you knew that for sure. But you spent the next five years traveling the world together, making love in cities he took you, and living life as reckless twenty somethings. With him, you were finally able to live out your dream.
As you lay naked in the arms of Matthew in a hotel somewhere in Paris, he asked you “what if one day, one of us meets our soulmate?”. You adjust yourself to see him more clearly, fingers softly running through his hair. The thought has crossed your mind before, more for Matthew’s sake than your own.
“It’s been five years Matt, I highly doubt I’m going to meet anyone else. But you might.” you try to foster a small smile, reassuring him he could still have a chance. Matthew has only lost one soulmate, while you’ve lost two.
“No, I’d never leave you.” He sits up, a large pout on his face. His stubbornness amuses you.
“That’s what you say now, sweetie.” you laugh as you kiss his pout away. "and you know it's probably for the best, people in my hometown call me soulmate killer, you know?" you try to play it off as a joke.
"soulmate killer? that's cruel. it's not your fault y/n. you know that right?" Matthew's brows are furrowed. You smile as you hold his face, releasing the tension in his forehead by massaging his eyebrows with your thumbs.
That night, he promised to stay in your life no matter what.
But this promise turned hazy when on one of your trips to South Asia, he met the actual love of his life. You didn’t protest when he came back to your dingy hotel, head down and in tears. You didn’t argue as you watched him pack his bags, for a trip that you weren’t going to be part of. And you didn’t push him away when he asked to kiss you one last time before he left. You let him go, and you sobbed out of loneliness.
Kudos to Matthew, he did keep his promise. He sent letters every few months to your PO Box, but you didn’t have the heart to open all of it. Last you’ve heard, they had baby number one on the way – and that was your last straw. You changed PO Box addresses shortly after that, unbeknownst to Matthew, who still sent you letters every year until his eventual death.
This was the first man in your life to have a happy ending. He died of old age, with 3 children and 10 grandchildren.
Something changed in the five years you spent with Matthew. More than falling in love with a person who wasn’t your soulmate, you fell in love with the world. You could never, ever imagine yourself going back to the domesticated life at home. The years after Matthew turned you into a cynic, and you didn’t believe in love anymore either.

PRESENT DAY. 2023.
“Got anything that’ll get me drunk in the next ten minutes?”
You plopped down on the bar stool, haphazardly placing your purse next to you. The bartender is eyeing you strangely, as if in disbelief that you’re even inside their establishment.
You sigh and pull out your identification card, a laminated piece of junk that tells you how old you really are. Scratch that, how old you are meant to be. He picks up the card and raises it up next to your face, comparing the woman in the picture to your face. It reminds you that you need to get it renewed…again. After all, the last time you updated your photo was sometime in the 80s. True enough, your ID card reflects a version of you with big hair and large colorful earrings. You don’t blame him for wanting to double check, contrasting the all black ensemble you have currently.
“Listen pal, I just buried my daughter today. I would appreciate it if you could get on with it”. You might not blame him, but you are impatient.
He slides your ID card back and pours you a whiskey on the rocks. “Sorry for your loss ma’am” he solemnly extends his condolences as he places your drink in front of you. You pick it up, raising it and nodding a “thank you” before taking a large gulp. It burns.
You outlived your daughter. And you wonder if you’ve been going about life in all the wrong ways. Atop the alcohol display at the bar is a small TV, flashing a report about a young woman named Somi who was murdered and found dead at her home – leaving her husband a widower. The news station flashed a photo of the blonde couple, sharing that they had just gotten married a week ago. She was beautiful. A shame.
As the news report slowly drowns you, your mind confronts you with the memories of your past soulmates and lovers.
PARK GUNWOOK. The soulmate you never got the chance to fully love, and died in the year 1923.
KIM TAERAE. The soulmate who was your second chance at life, and passed away in 1928.
SEOK MATTHEW. Who helped you live out your dreams from 1930 to 1935.
KIM JIWOONG. A man you married in the year 1940, who died from alcohol poisioning that same year.
ZHANG HAO. The one who gave you your daughter in 1952, but unfortunately fell victim to a house fire.
SUNG HANBIN. The husband that raised your daughter like his very own. But experienced a very fatal heart attack on the day of your daughter’s wedding in 1973.
Of course, there were others – flings and boytoys along the way. None of which were worth reminiscing about, except maybe for Kim Gyuvin.
At that moment, a tall man enters the bar and decides to take a seat next to you. His presence effectively drew you out from the thoughts circling your brain. Other than the fact that he too, is dressed in all black – you feel a deeper sense of similarity. Like kindred spirits, you recognize broken souls like yours. You order two more rounds of the whiskey the bartender gave you.
“I heard about your late wife in the news, I’m sorry for your loss.” You feign sympathy and slide the glass to the man next to you.
He looks taken aback at first, but accepts your offer. Now facing you, he raises his drink to you. You do the same. He’s strikingly handsome, with platinum hair and dark eyebrows. You also don’t miss that he’s dressed in Yves Saint Laurent from head to toe. He takes a peek at your ID card still laying on the table, making sure to catch your name.
“Next one’s on me, Y/N” he says, taking another swig at his whiskey, finishing his glass. He calls on the bartender, and buys an entire bottle for the two of you. The bartender returns his credit card, with the name ‘Shen Quanrui’ engraved.
“Thank you Quanrui, that’s very generous of you.”
He puts on a small smile, almost no one calls him by his legal name. “You can call me Ricky” he says as he pours into your glass.
“Alright Ricky. Here’s to life.” you raise up. It feels inappropriate to be clinking glasses on the day you buried your daughter, but you figured you could make an exemption. Ricky too, seemed to be going through the same thing with his late wife.
“To life.” he responds, tapping his glass against yours.
Just two broken souls who had lost someone important in their lives, drinking to fill the hollowness. You almost don’t feel the familiar bloom in your chest, tugging at your entire being like a magnet trying to find its other half. And if you do feel it, you pretend it’s the whiskey burning its place in your heart.
RICKY SHEN. TWENTY YEARS OLD. 2023. The man who you assume to be your next soulmate.

I just watched Yang Jian, soooo.... we're talking about that today.
More specifically these a-holes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Buckle up.
Known as the 4 Heavenly kings, the 4 Diamond Kings of Heaven, or Fēng Tiáo Yǔ Shùn (風調雨順; lit. 'Good climate'), these guys play a pretty big part in the Buddhist religion. They are often depicted on doorways, two on each side, and like many other groups of 4 in Chinese myth are linked with the cardinal directions.
Mo Li Hung/Duōwén Tiānwáng/Vessavana/Bishamon-ten: Protector of the North and ruler of rain, as shown by his fancy umbrella, the Umbrella of Chaos. Opening it turns the skies pitch dark, and turning it upside down causes massive storms. (Fun fact: also one of the Japanese Shichi-fujin/7 Gods of Fortune)
Mo Li Ching/Zēngzhǎng Tiānwáng/Virūlhaka/Zōchō-ten: Protector of the South and a god of plant life and growth. He has a super special sword, Blue Cloud, that can cause massive black winds and turn into a bunch of spears that turn people to dust.
Mo Li Hai/Chíguó Tiānwáng/Dhatarattha/Jikoku-ten: Protector of the East and god of music. As a result, his main weapon is his sick guitar that can mess up nature and cause all sorts of weird crap to happen.
Mo Li Shou/Guăngmù Tiānwáng/Virūpakkha/Kōmoku-ten: Protector of the East and an all-seeing deity that watches over everything. His tools are a magic bag and the goodest little guy Hua-hu Tiao, a white mink. His shoulder-buddy can also be a snake or dragon, depending on the version, but I like the fluffer.
Now, these guys have important jobs and are well respected in their own rights and stuff, but their most famous Chinese myth seems to be that time they got their asses kicked by Erlang Shen.
Okay, I guess that isn't entirely accurate as he and Nezha were mainly helping some guy named Huang Tianhua, but still. (Also don't expect any info on that Tianhua guy, I got nothing)
Anyways, the story starts when some guys pray for help in battle and for some reason the 4 brothers decide it's totally worth it to go down to the mortal realm themselves along with 1,000 celestial soldiers to kick some ass. Mo-li Shou sends his little floofer to go around and eat the opposing army's soldiers while the big boys kicked butt, but unfortunately one of the soldiers Hua-hu Tiao ate was Erlang Shen, here called by his other name Yang Jian. Erlang doesn't like that very much, so he rips his way out of Hua-hu, killing it, then transforms himself to look like it and sneaks back to his 'master,' waiting for the moment to strike.
Back at the plot, Nezha manages to break the 4 kings' divine weapons, making an opening for Tianhua to kill 3 of them, leaving only Mo-li Shou. Turning to his trusty fur-buddy to bail him out, Shou tries to sic Hua-hu at them, but surprise! That's actually Erlang Shen who bites his hand clean off. The ensuing agony gives Tianhua the distraction he needs to un-alive the last brother and win the day.
And then I guess they got out of the underworld on good behavior or something, because they continued to be important gods in the pantheon for many centuries to come.

Zhu Bajie's First Wife
In JTTW chapter eight, Zhu Bajie tells Guanyin that he inherited his cave from a mysterious figure:
It's called the Mountain of the Blessed Mound," said the fiendish creature, "and there is a cave in it by the name of Cloudy Paths. There was a Second Elder Sister Egg originally in the cave. She saw that I knew something of the martial art and therefore asked me to be the head of the family, following the so-called practice of "standing backward in the door." After less than a year, she died, leaving me to enjoy the possession of her entire cave (Wu & Yu, 2012, vol. 1, p. 212). 叫做福陵山。山中有一洞,叫做雲棧洞。洞裡原有個卵二姐,他見我有些武藝,招我做了家長,又喚做倒蹅門。不上一年,他死了,將一洞的家當,盡歸我受用。
I'm surprised that I've forgotten this "Second Elder Sister Egg" (Luan erjie, 卵二姐) considering how many times that I've read JTTW.
Yu (Wu & Yu, 2012) confirms that Zhu and this figure were married, for the practice mentioned above is a "colloquialism of the Huai'an region, referring to a man living in the woman's house after marriage" (vol. 1, p. 517 n. 31). This means that Zhu had a wife prior to "Green Orchard" (Cui'lan, 翠蘭) from chapter 18.
I was interested in learning more about her and found this Baidu page. It mentions that the luan (卵, "egg") part of her name is actually a transcription error, for the original 1592 edition of JTTW shows a different but similar-looking character. I checked my own copy, and found that it reads Mao erjie (夘二姐, "Second Elder Sister Mao") (see the right side of page 105 here).
Like Baidu, Pleco notes that Mao is the fourth (of 12) earthly branches, which is associated with rabbits. Therefore, Zhu's first wife could have been a rabbit spirit. Can you imagine the kids? They would be a strange pig-rabbit hybrid, pretty much an aardvark.
The Baidu page also mentions that their pairing may be an allusion to yin-yang theory since the fourth earthly branch, Mao (夘/卯, rabbit), is associated with yin wood, while the 12th, Hai (亥, pig), is associated with yang wood (i.e. they complete each other). This kind of stuff is over my head, so I don't plan to delve into it further. But this page does give an overview of the stems and elements.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On a related note, if we were to apply this yin-yang/earthly branch dating approach to Wukong, his partner would be a chicken! This is because the ninth earthly branch, Shen (申, monkey) is yang metal, while the 10th, You (酉, chicken) is yin metal.
