And Alex and Henry learning a lot about each other in the process — Mind the tags, y'all. I feel like podcasts have kind of gotten longer in general, is that just me? Maybe it's the pandemic, or maybe just my tastes shifting. In any case, a lot of mine run long now too, but looking at my playlist here are some shorter podcasts I recommend:

PEMcast -- put on by the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA, they cover a wide variety of artistic and local cultural topics (their latest is about the bats the museum is hosting!)

99% Invisible -- about "invisible" designs that shape our world. "Used To Be A Pizza Hut" is a great episode, and their partnership with Articles Of Interest about Hawaiian shirts was brilliant.

Criminal -- True crime reported on by an extremely smart woman with a beautiful voice. It's not the typical true crime podcast in that she approaches it more like longform journalism, and sometimes the crimes themselves are very whimsical. She also does "Phoebe Reads A Mystery" where she reads one chapter of a public domain mystery novel each day; I recommend Dracula and The Portrait Of Dorian Gray, although there's a variety of lengths on those.

Bridgewater -- A fiction podcast featuring Misha Collins as a skeptical specialist in mythology who delves into the mystery of his father's death many years before. I stopped listening after season one, a bit disappointed in the denoument, but most of season one is great and I am actually going to try to listen to S2 as part of NaNo.

"City Cast" Your Local City -- not every city has them, but City Cast is a locally hosted show in most major cities about what's happening. City Cast Chicago is EXCELLENT.

Mailin' It -- the official podcast of the USPS, which sure is....something. It's fascinating to listen to in an anthropological sense, but also the subject matter is occasionally quite compelling. I especially like episode 7, "Stamps, An American Obsession".

The Allusionist -- all about how words shape our lives. I got into it with 145, "Parents", about gender identity and pregnancy/birth, which informed both Infinite Jes and Royals/Ramblers.

Levar Burton Reads -- Levar Burton reads SFF short stories charmingly. (This is on the longer side but most are still under an hour.)

Cautionary Tales -- Tim Hartford looks to history and what it can teach us; I run hot and cold but I stick with it because of gems like "The Art Forger, The Nazi, and the Pope", "Wrong Tools Cost Lives" and most recently "Photographing Fairies" (about the Cottingley Fairies and how Elsie Wright was, actually, the photoshop genius of her day.)

Mob Queens -- I will forever recommend Mob Queens, a single-run series about Anna Genovese, who dunned in her mobster husband, took over some of his business, and lived a queer and fabulous life with her butch partner as a gay nightclub doyenne in midcentury America.

Also most don't include lengths but the Participation Form Results Sheet has a spot for "what media are you going to use" and people have been putting suggestions. Readers, feel free to add your own suggestions in comments or reblogs. (Remember, I don't repost asks sent in response to other asks!)

Is it me or dose Pink RS and Toxic Princess from the princess’ jewels feel similar

Note the authors in two different webcomics are different, RS has an unhealthy celebrity crush and a Lolita Fetish and while the Princess’ Jewels author Alove is a disgusting human being and she is a pedo.

Both of them are sexy and beautiful Mary Sue girl boss and they show toxic femininity and girls look up to them as role models, for example Pink RS bullies all the nymphs for liking her man meat and Toxic Princess treats men like toys and she forced one of them to join her “Jewelry Box” and she bullies and fat shames her fiancé (because he’s not hot).

They have beautiful art style and cute clothes. 

The Red guy with great personality and he’s a 10, but He’s a simp to the main Mary girl.

Look we got POC with no personality and not treating them like they are real humans and they are there for points (sick)

The only likable characters (don’t know about Toxic Princess’ mother though)

We got toxic relationships like Christian Blue and Pink RS, and Toxic Princess and her poor Jewels.

Sex sense that some how not getting censored or banned from breaking Webtoons rule which is no sexual themes and romanticize abuse and it is on app that his for kids to look at.

Another girl boss like Hera and Yellow queen who are friends with the main girls who are way worse then them.

And again they are the role models of very young girls to up to which it’s bad, because there are no beautiful, sexy and girly female characters in today’s American entertainment and they flat out go to Webtoon, because they have beautiful and sexy female characters on here, so they can look up and they look up Pink RS and Toxic Princess, because they are pretty and didn’t look past their pretty faces to see how awful they are. If you want to look up to any female characters then I would recommend you to watch Japanese anime and read manga, because they have a hand full of amazing writing female characters who are feminine and the opposite of a Mary Sue/Toxic feminine here are the list.

☆ As an au pair, you'll be tasked with a whole whirlwind of responsibilities. Most of them will revolve around caring for Anya, but that doesn't mean that your attention won't be diverted to other areas of the Forger home as well. ☆ It also means that you'll be living on the premises, so almost all of your day will be spent with Forgers in one way or another--you might be helping Anya with homework, or cooking with Yor, or bringing Loid a cup of coffee while he works at his desk. They'll all get so used to you being around that you'll basically be a part of the family, and it'll feel a lot more sincere since none of them are blood related as it is.

☆ While you're certainly not seen as a child, Yor and Loid will grow to baby you a good bit. They're both fiercely protective of you, but in different ways--Yor is more likely to casually mention "eliminating" someone who stepped on your foot or caused you some kind of other inconvenience. But Loid is much quieter and sneakier about it, he'll investigate any and every tipoff or clue that involves you and someone who might harm you. You might find people around you apologizing more frequently or even disappearing entirely, but at your skill level there's no way you'll be able to trace it back to the man of the Forger family.

☆ With Loid and Yor having separate bedrooms, it works more to your own disadvantage. When one of them wants to sneak out and pull you into their room, they won't have to worry about the other waking up or finding out. They both think that your relationship with them is secret from the other, so it's probably better if you don't go around blabbing about it to either one. And in both cases, it'll probably start with each of them coming on to you and admitting their feelings for you, while also revealing that their marriage isn't exactly the "traditional" type you thought it was.

☆ Kisses are mandatory once your relationship crosses that boundary from professional to romantic. Loid kisses you on his way out the door for work, and Yor saves her kisses for when you're making dinner together or when she can get you alone in her room. They hide them pretty well--except when Anya reads their minds and is scandalized to find out her babysitter is kissing her Mama and Papa. But then again, she's a kid, so she just assumes that it's more of a friendly kiss. Or maybe it's one of those "cultural differences" that Papa sometimes talks about? Maybe you're secretly French!

☆ Yor is always watching you. There isn't a moment in the day that she isn't aware of what you're doing or who you're with, and if it's someone she doesn't approve of, she will have to fight to stay her hand from killing them immediately. She's so protective over you in a way that's quite similar to how Yuri treats her, although she doesn't really make the connection because she's so sure that it's for your benefit.

♡ Loid is probably the last person you want to be home alone with. He'll invite you to sit next to him on the couch and lay a hand on your knee, or help you cook dinner and brush against you at every opportunity. He never imagined he'd find fucking the babysitter so hot, but it is, and if you try to move away you can bet you're gonna be pinned to the sofa and fucked within an inch of your life. Blubber for mercy and call him "Mr. Forger" while he does it and he'll probably leave some possessive handprints on your ass, too.

♡ Yor isn't much better, though. Being home alone with her is more common, and thus she feels there's more she can get away with. She'll make it a habit to touch herself near you when she thinks you won't notice, even though you can hear her little moans or feel how wet her fingers are when she finishes and comes over to touch your face, or even push them inside your mouth to pretend it's just a silly prank. When she gets more bold, though, she'll sit you down on the couch and insist on taking care of you by shoving her face between your legs and putting her mouth to work.

♡ If, somehow, they find out early on that the other has been messing around with you, they thankfully won't get jealous of each other. No, the couple will work together with an idea in mind immediately--Loid and Yor will start having sex when they know you’re around, and when you can hear it. It's rare, but when Anya is off at a friend's house for a sleepover or something of the like, the two will leave Loid's door cracked open and fuck in full view so you can see them. You can try to pretend you don't notice them, but in that case they'll keep going until they're finished before calling you in, and asking you with flushed faces to please clean up the sheets as Loid pulls out and spills cum all over them. If they're feeling generous, they'll leave it at that and revel in your embarrassment as you obey. But if not, Loid will grab you by the hair and shove your face between Yor's legs, and order you to lick up his mess until you're done so he can then get you to lick him clean, too.

♡♀️ Anytime Loid fucks you, he'll ask if you wouldn't mind giving him a baby so his daughter can have a sibling. You can say no every time and he'll just chuckle, without telling you whether or not he's going to try anyways. Yor will sedate you and carve "Forger" into your back so it'll scar permanently, and to be a little sweeter after she's done listening to your screams, she'll tattoo you with her and Loid's names on your inner thighs. Loid might also break your mind by fucking you and forcing you to repeat a myriad of phrases, probably while holding a gun to your head. "I love you", "I'm a Forger", "I'll never leave you", "You're my family", and "I'm sorry" will be common ones for him to brainwash you with, along with a few more indulgent ones like "I belong to you" and "Please make me cum, Mr. Forger".

‼️ Ultimately, if they can brainwash you, they will. The realization that both of them have been involved with you will come in second, because the most important thing is to work together to keep you in their clutches. They want to convince you that you don't need a life outside of them, that other people don't matter, and to just welcome the life that they can so easily provide you with. They at least know that Anya won't always need a caretaker and it terrifies them to think of that, so they'll take whatever extreme precautions are necessary to keep you safe and sound in their care.

☆ So just be their little companion, ok? It's much easier that way, and they really don't want to have to go so far as to eliminate the people in your family or your friends (romantic partners are different though, they'll thoroughly enjoying getting rid of them). They just want you, and that's it. That's not such a bad life, is it?

SpyxFamily Season 2 OP is finally here! Also, my attention kept honing in on the teapot & teacups, so here's an analysis.

(Possible spoiler ahead--you've been warned!)

What I've noticed is that the teapot is only held by Twilight, who I see is the leader of the family, and he's solely the only one pouring the teapot. We've already established in season 1 that the teacups are symbolic of the characters' bond/identity in the Forger Family and closeness with one another. So, each time the family is seen holding teacups, it's a Forger family moment (if that makes sense). The way I perceive the teapot is that it's Operation Strix.

SS1: In the beginning, Twilight is seen as very cautious and protective of the teapot (he even puts it under a sleeve to keep it warm -- furthering my understanding that he has control/is very protective of it).

SS2: It isn't until the car scene that we see the teapot again w/ Twilight. This time along with Anya and Yor's teacups. Everyone's cups are filled with the same beverage which could represent their ties as the Forger's. Twilight's crazy driving represents him driving the wheel of his mission. The turbulence in his driving along with his teacup and teapot moving could represent his control of his spy life (the car), control of Operation Strix (teapot), and control as Loid Forger (teacup).

SS3: When Loid pours the teapot and we see water, I perceive it as Twilight/Loid probably experiencing failures (despite how cute and upbeat this design and seen is). This is b/c the tea inside the teapot has been washed away by water. We also notice that Anya is holding her cup and it's not being poured into. So it may also be a sign of discord in the Forger family. Also, I love that the Forgers "drowned" which represents drowning in their respective missions/problems in their involvement in the mission or with each other.

SS4: We have a clear view of all members of the Forger's with their teapot and teacups. Twilight/Loid is missing his teacup here. I may be stretching a bit, but my analysis of this scene is that regardless of having his teacup (Loid Forger), he doesn't forget his role to care for Anya. We also notice that Yor's cup is empty, and yet both she and Twilight prioritize saving Anya. As a result, I see this as the family still working together even if they're not on the same page with each other--not being on the same page represented by the absence of tea in their cups.

SS5: Twilight has redeemed himself as evidenced by the piping hot teapot, and he also has his teacup too along with Yor and Anya. I also like they used airplanes here b/c it could also have a symbolic meaning that, together, they're figuratively on top of the world.

SS6: Twilight is now more relaxed when pouring the content of the tea (Operation Strix) out to Anya because he can now trust that his family (Yor, specifically) will have his back.

SS7: When Yor sips the tea, I see more of a symbiotic relationship going on here. When Yor is seen drinking her tea, Anya is happy. I see this as "papa is trusting mama" from Anya's perspective, and of course, she just wants her parents to be happy (and possibly in love with each other). And when Anya is happy, Operation Strix goes well (recall that Anya's emotions easily influence Twilight).

SS8: Same thing is happening here. Twilight pours tea for Anya but Yor catches it, which is a lovely transition that this will be a Yor-centered season (aka Cruise Arc).

SS9 & SS10: Harmony / being on the same page together / united as a family from henceforth regardless of their crazy adventures (shown with them upside down) together.

TLDR; I love this teacup/teapot engagement with the Forger family because it essentially summarizes the Forger's relationship with one another from S1. This is such a good OP b/c whatever ep is shown will show the growth in their relationship w/ each other.

Yor is an assassin and, while Loid is a spy, he's also the one who takes care of their kid and does all the cooking and a lot of the cleaning.

She's a badass assassin by trade and he's a spy living that undercover domestic bliss life with a lil daughter and a dog... Loid: 'yes i do the cookin yes i do the cleanin--' also a note: they are legally married (marriage of convenience), but do have mutual feelings for one another (just haven't confessed yet). But it's basically accepted that they'll officially air their feelings to one another by the end of the story.

I just love them 🥺. They're both hot and cool and love their lil family so much.

Mission #??: A Forger Family Christmas

Loid heard how normal families spend Christmas and does all of them with his family to “keep his cover.”

Him and Yor take Anya to the mall to sit on Santa’s lap, tell him what she wants for Christmas. But she hears Loid’s offhand thoughts about how Santa isn’t real, but it’s admittingly cute that Anya’s still naive to believe in him. Unfortunately, this results in Anya screaming and crying about how Santa isn’t real. Loid wonders how she could have possibly reach that conclusion, but gets distracted by the other kids screaming/crying over the same thing, all because they heard Anya. He looks to Yor for help, only to find out that she’s crying too. Unbeknownst to Loid, Yor was inspired by how stealthy a fat man like Santa could sneak in and out of places undetected, and it was that level of skill that she wanted to reach one day.

They all decide then and there to get hot chocolate. Help calm the nerves.

They all go ice skating, with Yor and Anya especially having a good time as Anya holds onto Yor for dear life as they skate.

During a walk through the snow, someone pelts Anya in the back of the head with a snowball. Him and his group laugh at her...and immediately regret it once Yor join their little game.

Loid and Yor inevitably find themselves under a mistletoe. For the sake of the mission, Loid goes in for a kiss...and then Yor punches him through a wall because she was too gosh darn flustered about the whole ordeal. Don’t worry, he walks it off.

Anya pressures Bond to give her a vision of what she’s getting for Christmas. He does nothing, but Anya still gives him his belly rubs. He deserves it.

PRESENTS TIME!

Loid gave Yor a set of knives due to her newest interest towards cooking. He still fears her cooking for his life, but she still seems happy to receive them.

Loid gave Anya a dart gun based on her favorite spy show. She loves it and immediately shoots Loid with it.

Yor gave Anya a doll that Yor made herself. It’s ugly looking and is comparable to roadkill, but Anya still says that she loves what her Mama made her. Yor nearly breaks into tears.

Yor then gives Loid a “World’s Greatest Father” coffee mug. She wasn’t too sure what to get him, but she DOES know that he is in fact the world’s greatest father. Loid thanks her and promises to drink from it everyday. A promise he does indeed keep.

And Anya gives them both homemade Christmas cards, both featuring a drawing of Loid and Yor with lists of why she loves them both. Yor finally cries when she gets hers and Loid said that what Anya gave him is acceptable. The fact that he has it framed and put up on his desk is purely to keep up appearances. Yes, that is what he tells himself. And no, the smile he gets whenever he sees it doesn’t clue in for him about his true feelings.

In short, Mission #??: Forger Family Christmas was a success.

I love when people make designs for Zanpakuto Spirit Nozarashi. It's interesting. However my problem is that many of them just seem to be "Yachiru with tits." And that's a bit weird. Of course she'd resemble Yachiru, she split off her. But Nozarashi would not look identical to Yachiru, however they would look feasibly related. Think about our other obvious example in the series of the Zanpakuto spirit splitting in 2; Katen & Kyokotsu.

We know that Kyokotsu split off (or Katen gave birth? I'm assuming they're using 'birth' as a metaphor considering Katen isn't a person.) from Katen. Granted, the nature of Kyokotsu is different from Yachiru, but there's the same general idea; the Zanpakuto became two people. Nozarashi split herself in two; Noza herself being the Shikai, and Yachiru being the Bankai. Nozarashi made Yachiru so that Kenpachi could always have her with him, even when he wouldn't communicate with her. Katen made Kyokotsu so that she could hide Shinken Hakkyoken (as......weird as that was.)

Why bring them up?

Because they are a pretty clear blueprint for how character design would work under the concept of the Zanpakuto splitting in two.

Katen and Kyokotsu are not identical. However, just by looking at them there's obvious similarities. They have the same eye color, hair color, skin color, and have almost the exact same color pallette in their outfits. (Kyokotsu does not have pink in her outfit, but Katen does.) They even have similar decorative hair pieces. However, they have slightly different eye shapes and obviously different haircuts. They both cover their eye, but not only in very different ways, but also the opposite eye. They reflect each other. They don't look like the same woman but older, they look like sisters.

It's safe to assume that Nozarashi and Yachiru would follow similar designing conventions. Nozarashi would have Yachiru's eye color, hair color, and skin color. She'd probably have a hairpin similar to Yachiru's. The color pallette of her outfit likely doesn't apply as Yachiru is in a shihakusho, due to passing as a Shinigami.

So, when you see fanmade Nozarashi designs, often they are just Yachiru with long hair and big tits, shihakusho and all. And it's fine to design a woman that looks like Yachiru with big tits and call her Nozarashi. Nozarashi probably would have big tits, I mean most BLEACH women do! But it has the same vibe as people turning Anya Forger into a 'hot 20 year old.' It starts to kinda reek of lolicon shit.

To me, I've always envisioned Nozarashi looking like Yachiru's punk mom. (Especially if Katen "giving birth" was literal, rather than metaphorical.) For a few reasons. It says a lot about Kenpachi as a person. He had that protective, parental instinct over Yachiru since day 1. He's her dad. Nozarashi split off Yachiru so that Kenpachi would have a piece of her with him, so she could always be there for him. She loved him dearly. Kenpachi was Nozarashi's baby, while Yachiru was Kenpachi's. An older, parental vibe from Nozarashi would make sense to me. Not just judging by Katen & Kyokotsu, but by how Kenpachi's story played out.

The point at the end of the day, yes Nozarashi would look like an older Yachiru. But Nozarashi wouldn't just look like Yachiru with slightly longer hair and a nice pair of tits. At least put her in an outfit that isn't a shihakusho. Maybe an extremely ripped up kimono that's to the point it almost seems scantily clad. With it loosely tied so that her boobs are out. Make her face less childish. Put some creativity into it. Nozarashi is more than just Yachiru! If you're going to make a design for a character that doesn't have one, what's the point of just copying an already existing one in a way that makes you look like a lolicon?

What I've watched recently (spoiler warning - see bold titles)

Before the tragedy of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 episode 18 happened I had actually started watching Great Pretender. However, after the loss of a specific someone (Gege when I catch you) and a few days of mourning and crying at tiktok edits and angsty tweets, I couldn't bring myself to keep watching Great Pretender (I will get to it once I feel capable enough to commit to another series in a few days probably). I have instead caught up with some weekly anime that I've been watching this season as well as (finally) started reading MXTX's The scum villain's self saving system. Since I haven't posted in a few days, I wanted to share my opinions on the media that has been keeping me sane since the tragic loss of my favourite character (considering the situation as well as the fact that my average state of sanity is still slightly insane - take this with a grain of salt).

Jujutsu Kaisen (season 2, episode 18) - every Thursday on CrunchyRoll

The production team went above and beyond and I thank them for it. Nanami looked so peaceful in his imagination and I highly appreciate that they extended the couple pages from the manga into 7 minutes of perfection (I'm in so much pain)

Jujutsu kaisen (season 2, episode 19) - every Thursday on CrunchyRoll

Episode 18 felt like a fever dream and so did this one. To keep it short and sweet again (aka I don't wanna cry again), the production team did incredible work once again.

The apothecary diaries (season 1, episodes 1 to 8) - every Saturday on CrunchyRoll

I really wanted something short and more light hearted to watch - hence I finally decided to start this series. In reality I was planning to binge it when it finished airing but I was impatient. The story of an apothecary knowledgeable about poisons and medicine who serves one of the emperor's concubines - with the added bonus of a handsome fool who is in love with her while she doesn't seem to be interested at all! (Jinshi is so madly and hopelessly in love with Maomao it makes me die laughing every time she cringes at his flirting but also I LOVE HIM). THE ANIMATION AND COLOURS of this anime are incredible, there is literally no reason for anyone to not like this show. Absolutely watch this if you have even the slightest hunch you'd enjoy it

Spy x Family (season 2, episode 8) - every Saturday on CrunchyRoll

As a lover of season 1, I've been very excited for season 2. Up until episode 5 of season 2, I couldn't see what the plan with this season was but after the start of the cruise arc (I'm afraid to google the actual name of the arc - spoilers haunt me) my faith has been restored. We're back to exiting ventures with the Forger family, this time more focused on Yor's assassin adventures. Even more so, this episode was extra incredible as we got to see Yor in real action, fighting a storm of other assassins looking to kill the family she has been assigned to guard and looking hot while doing it. Spy x Family is truly an incredible shounen.

Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductions (season 1, episode 9) - every Monday on CrunchyRoll

I started this anime on release day and I started it for Ron. And I stayed for Ron. And mysteries (I do love me a good detective story). Overall, this anime is a good way to take a break from your daily routine by watching a mystery being solved in a comedic way while slowly also unfolding the bigger mystery of why the renowned Kamonohashi Ron stopped sleuthing. This week's episode finally gave us a good hint to his past! Honestly I wish more people were talking about this anime this season, it's so underrated.

And finally! I've been reading The Scum Villain's Self Saving System (Chinese name: Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong), Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's first novel series. I've read both Heaven Official's Blessing (Chinese name: Tian Guan Ci Fu) and The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Chinese name: Mo Dao Zu Shi) and every time she impresses me with her writing skills. While I really want to share my opinions on her novels, I would like to make a dedicated post for MXTX's novels once I finish all of them, as I've actually not read most the extras for either TGCF or MDZS and I've not finished reading Svsss. I'm also very (im)patiently waiting for my copies of TGCF volumes 5-8 to get here in the mail in the next few days. I do have to say tho, Svsss has surprised me as I find it to be quite different from MDZS and TGCF, which is valid considering it was her first release.

the actual showdown between satsuki and yor would be intense. they’ve both been honing their craft since they were children. and when it comes down to it, they’ll fight with everything they’ve got. one fights to make the world safe FOR her family, the other fights to make the world safe FROM her family. strength, tenacity, perseverance—they’ve both got it in surplus. but satsuki’s constitution is inhuman. yor would realize that, she would realize she’s beaten. this was a battle she never wanted to fight.

who is this terrifying child with eyes like ice and a body of steel? no sign of a weakness, no blow seems strong enough to make her falter

back to the wall, on her last ounce of strength, yor’s thoughts would be filled with anya and loid and yuri. she’d be heartbroken and devastated, and that’s when satsuki’s weakness would break through. her resolve cracking at her disgust over who she’s become. pummeling a woman on reflex, because she’s a soldier, an emperor. the woman in front of her is a mother, a sister, and a wife.

satsuki sees her reflection in yor’s tear-filled eyes. the face of ragyo smiles, amused, back at her. this is when she truly falters. it’s just for a second, but a second’s worth of pause when faced with an assassin is the same as laying aside your weapon and standing eyes closed, arms out-stretched.

yor strikes. satsuki falls.

it weighs heavy on yor’s heart. but this is her life, she’ll do whatever it takes to keep her family safe.

favorite thing about them i quote this a lot but it’s because it kind of just fits with how i see him: whatever works. i like his adaptability. he’s a forger, he’s the tech guy, he’s the gopher. he struggles with the world he’s been forced into but he still fights, however he can. gun out of ammo? headbutt. can’t kill yourself the old fashioned way? listen to what the CIA guy has to say. his adaptability hurts him but it helps him, too, and it makes him as important a part of the group as all the others.

I get anime-only complaining about the lack of assassin Yor screen time after 25 episodes of the anime. However, to downplay her role in the series since, as they say, she only became the "housewife" in the story is to miss the point of Yor's character entirely. She finally has the chance to be "normal" and to be appreciated outside of her just killing people. Loid and Anya are both aware and focused on the mission such that their interactions with others might still be less genuine (Loid with his family and Anya with Damian). For Yor, her every interaction with other people seems to be more sincere since the only thing she hides is her true job but not who she is. She also has no underlying motives. That's why Yor's relationship with Anya as her mother and to Loid as his wife are probably one of the most genuine relationship Anya and Loid have in the series since Yor never pretends or hold back in caring for them. Yor trying to be a mother and a wife is also a start and a step for her to develop and see her own worth as a person and not just a tool for the Garden. This development, of course, is still incomplete but it is one of the development I look forward the most in the story.

Of course, I also want more assassin Yor (can't wait for S2!) but at the end, the assassin and spy part are less important than the central theme of the whole story which is the family itself. It spice things up for sure, but I don't think fans like me stuck around this long in the story just to see Loid and Yor be badass and kick some ass. Yes, it could be part of the reasons but not the main one (at least for me).

I do agree though that Endo could have written more Yor killing scenes in the pre-Cruise arc (there is one with her in the butt-shot date but that didn't make it into the anime). But I also feel like Endo didn't because it will shift the tone of the story and could be harder to support Yor to be a part of this family (especially in the manga with how sketchy and ambiguous the Garden's allegiance and methods seem to be). Of course, he could have written Yor not to be an assassin, that's a valid criticism, but it does take away from the fun and potential angst (and seriously, people will still have the same complaints about Yor being just a housewife). And given that he already written her to be an assassin and the series took off more than he expected, I think Endo might have realized too late the responsibility on his part and the conflict it arises to him in a moral aspect. The thing is, I think Endo does not seem to like killing for the sake of just killing. He could only pass murdering people as comedic and lighthearted for only so long since, afterall, murder does require some moral dilemma to justify it. Even for a comedy series, this might feel gratuitous if he kept Yor killing people and the Japanese audience might seemed less inclined if he took this direction (I remember some Japanese tweets pointing out the way the main mcs in Buddy Daddies just kill people without any moral implications on their part. Perhaps the delivery is too lighthearted for them since there seemed to be less complaints regarding this outside Japan).

Anyway, these are something to think about regarding Endo's choice to not include more Yor assassin scenes pre-Cruise arc. I think the criticisms of assassin Yor in the early part of the series are valid but simply dismissing it as poor character writing on Yor's part is not really seeing the entire picture at all. Moreover, with how Endo is setting up Yor and the Garden in the manga, we might actually explore the gray area of Yor's profession, and its eventual conflict in her role in the Forger family. The manga is not even 100 chapters yet and it is a slow burn in plot and character relationships. Yor is just not there to be stabby stabby. She is a character on her own right and I think people should appreciate her more than just being the hot, assassin mom/wife.

I have a bunch, but the ones I thought of first are any combination of Gaara, Rock Lee, and Sakura. I like the dynamics between all of them. There's a lot of healing that can they can help each other with, plus their personalities are all very different which makes things fun (ex. super stoic Gaara with super energetic Lee).

(And yes that does include all three of them together, although that's something I have yet to see in fic or fanart for some reason.)

Headcanon: What Anya calls Yor

Okay so some of this is headcanon and some of this is drawn straight from the Anime and Manga.

In the Manga/Anime, Anya calls Yor "HaHa" which does translate to Mama, but it's the incorrect term in Japanese. According to THIS video, the term "HaHa" is reserved for when you are talking about your mother to someone else and is considered disrespectful to use in conversation with your mom. That's the background.

Now onto the headcanon.

Yor accepted very quickly that Anya wanted her to be her mother. The moment the little girl called her "HaHa" she repeated it back with a stunned, almost reverent air, as if she couldn't believe that someone like her would be genuinely called that. It wasn't until the interview at Eden that Yor understood why she had been granted the title "HaHa" and not "Mama". Because Anya loved and always will love her first mother.

This is something Yor accepted. She's just a player in the game called the Forgers after all. And Anya loving her Mama more makes sense. A little girl should love her birth mother, even if she is no longer around. Yor wouldn't dare try to take that place from the original Mrs. Forger.

So if there ever comes a day when Anya calls her Mama... she will be confused. Maybe this happens when all the secrets are out in the open, maybe this happens right before everything comes crashing down, maybe this happens in one of the quiet moments when it's just the two of them in the apartment drinking hot cocoa. But whenever it does happen, Yor will freeze. "What was that, dear?" she'll ask, not quite understanding. And should Anya repeat "mama" back to her... she'll question why and whatever Anya's reason for changing how she addresses her Step Mother will probably break Yor.

Because she'll know then that she became the one thing she didn't want to at the beginning - she replaced the original Mrs. Forger (or if she knows that Anya is adopted, her birth mother). That'll be both heartwarming (to be accepted as she is and loved unconditionally by the girl she has always considered her daughter) and heartbreaking (because she never wanted to replace the woman Anya shed tears for).

HOW THE PANDEMIC SHOOK HAWAIIAN TOURISM

Waikiki was like a ghost town in the middle of 2020. Instead of sunburned bodies sardined on the Hawaiian beach or the high-pitched squeals from tourists as their feet touched the warm ocean, there was just the sound of the wind and waves crashing on the shore. For Starr Kalahiki, Native Hawaiian jazz singer and activist, those early quarantine days fostered healing—for both the land and the locals. “The response was immediate. The land was so, so happy,” she says from her blue-walled bedroom in Moanalua, about 10 miles northwest of Honolulu’s famous beach. “In Waikiki, you could smell the lipoa, you could smell the seaweed. You didn’t smell suntan lotion.” Two hundred miles away, on Hawai’i Island, photographer Kapulei Flores felt the same: “It was so nice to be able to go to the beach and not have to worry about if it’s gonna be crowded. Just being able to freely walk around your own community, your own ’āina, was the best part.” But for others, the change felt apocalyptic. Airports had no traffic; neither did the freeways. Streets weren’t flooded with people, hotels and restaurants were desolate. With tourism as the state’s biggest industry, Covid threw Hawai’i for a loop—and the islands already struggle with the effects of visitors. A 1973 Seattle Daily Times article proclaimed the 50th state an ideal travel spot for Washingtonians: “Hawai’i is a destination that has just about everything for the vacationer, from the high-rise finery of bustling Waikiki to the quiet scenery of the neighborhood islands.” In 2019, Hawai’i had a record year, bringing in 10.4 million tourists from around the globe—two million of those from Washington. Pre-pandemic, 170,000, on average, left Sea-Tac Airport for the islands every month. But when Covid hit, Hawai’i governor David Ige proclaimed a 14-day quarantine for all incoming travelers. The slightest violation of his restrictions would be met with a pricey fine or up to a year in prison. For those first 10 months of 2020, total visitor arrivals in Hawai’i dropped 75 percent, from 30,000 to less than 1,000 per day. Travel from Washington to the islands declined only 35 percent to about 730,000 for the entirety of the year. Though the pause in travel kept Hawai’i as one of the lowest Covid-infected states in the U.S., its unemployment skyrocketed, going from two percent to 20: “We went from the lowest unemployment to the highest in the whole United States in one month,” says Jerry Agrusa, travel industry management professor at the University of Hawai’i. Then quarantine exceptions expanded, allowing visitors to bypass it with a negative test. The pre-travel testing program led to the highest number of visitors since before Covid in just the first month, and nearly half of those travelers flew out of Sea-Tac. By the time 2021 came around, talk of a “hot-vaxxed summer” lingered in the air. Although Seattle logged record-breaking temperatures in June, nothing stopped Washingtonians from trading Golden Gardens for the North Shore. Yet visitors cheated isolation requirements, ignored mask mandates, and even falsified vaccination cards—one forger was arrested with a fake card that read “Maderna” instead of Moderna. As delta spiked, the state saw some of the highest case numbers they’d seen all pandemic and Ige pleaded, “Now is not a good time to travel to Hawai’i.” Covid cases and hospitalizations can be tallied and the number of tourists that entered each island can be counted, but it’s harder to determine a diminishing land. “How do you quantify ’āina that is eroding because there’s too many hikers?” says O’ahu singer Pōmaika’i Keawe. At Diamond Head State Park near Honolulu, a park coordinator counted more than 500 people on the trail one day last summer, despite Hawai’i’s social distancing measures. In 2020, Hawai’i Tourism Authority tried to remedy the tourist problem, announcing a six-year plan that consists of reservation requirements for state parks, conservation fees, and even educational videos that spread cultural and environmental awareness. The plan hopes to change the stigma surrounding tourism and challenge visitors, giving them a more authentic experience. Agrusa thinks the real problem is there are just too many tourists. Tourism has never been a black-and-white issue for Hawai’i. For many, the hospitality industry is their main source of income and is the main driving force for the state economy. But its effects are complicated. “Everyone equates Hawai’i with tourism,” says Agrusa, “but our real problem is housing.” It started with short-term vacation rentals. During the 1980s, O’ahu was littered with STRs. Visitors intruded residential neighborhoods and by 1989, the island made them illegal. But in 2019, there were still an estimated 33,118 STRs statewide, and they contributed to the shortage of affordable full-time rental homes. Some renters in Hawai’i spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing costs. Home value and property taxes continue to rise, pricing out many local residents who already struggle to stay in their homes. Still, out-of-state investors continue to buy up houses, condos, and apartments, especially in Waikiki. “We’re being uprooted for corporate foreign entities and companies who do not care about the land or the people or the effects,” says photographer Kapulei Flores. Struggles over land are nothing new in Hawai’i, nor are how they intersect with its tourism. Mauna Kea, the globe’s largest mountain, is a premier site for astronomical observatories—and a popular visitor attraction. It is home to more telescopes than any other peak. When plans for another observatory were announced, Native Hawaiians protested the additional intrusion on a sacred space. Kia’i mauna, mountain protectors, have been protesting the installation since 2014. “We are doing our best to preserve what we can so you can continue to come back,” says Keawe. “But you’re not going to have the same Hawai’i to come back to if you’re not helping us care for this place, and learn who we are, and why these places are important to us.” In late 2021, locals in the state’s biggest city were dealt another blow. As tourists worried about restaurants being open for indoor dining, 93,000 people couldn’t even drink their own water—it was laced with petroleum from the nearby Navy fuel farm on O’ahu. This isn’t the first occurrence either. Since its creation in the 1940s, the well has leaked 180,000 gallons of gasoline into Hawai’i’s drinking water. As mask mandates fell across the country, Hawai’i has remained the sole holdout with a statewide rule ending March 25. Two years into the pandemic, singer and activist Starr Kalahiki still has hope for a change in how outsiders affect life in Hawai’i; she imagines a world for both outsiders and Natives. “What I wish is that it would be understood how sacred this place is and that it would be honored as such,” Kalahiki says, crying. “I don’t blame the world for not knowing how Hawai’i should be seen. I want to share the beauty of this place with the world, but in a safe way.”
