Sinners as D&D Classes & Subclasses!
we back at it again so last night @gregorsamsaautism and i ended up cooking up ideas for what classes the LCB Sinners would be in the D&D universe. not necessarily what they'd want to play as if they partook in the TTRPG- think of it as, essentially, what D&D identities would look like for them. i'll give a few explanations on each one as need be bc i know some of them are gonna need it but just bear with us on this NOTE: this doesn't dive into what races they'd be- that's its entirely own separate thing and this is long enough as is with that said. time to make these guys get more fantasy injected in their bones
Yi Sang- Circle of Stars Druid The man seems to be pretty associated with constellations, at least from a few bits and pieces I've seen here and there, so being able to harness their power in the way that a Circle of Stars druid would let him work at maximum efficiency. I could see him using the Dragon Starry Form often, and his Star Map most definitely takes the form of a scroll covered in numerous constellations. All this, and the fact that being a Druid probably gives him more of a natural resistance to the ills of nature, given the class's ability to control parts of it with magic. And given what we learned about him in Hell's Chicken... budding potatoes is going to be much more common a meal for him.
Faust - Hexblade Warlock
Her namesake literally makes a pact with a demon in her source material. She was going to be a warlock no matter what, but Hexblade feels like the one that most closely fits her. Dealing in hexes, curses, and starting out at level 1 already being proficient in medium armor, shields, and martial weapons- even if she does not fully utilize these, the knowledge still rests in her regardless, and that's not to say she will never utilize them. ... also Hex Nail EGO for Faust exists.
Don Quixote - Oath of Vengeance Paladin
Okay, hear me out here. I am of the opinion that a paladin's oath does not necessarily have to be one that's religious-coded, if that makes sense. Oaths can be made to anyone and anything- it doesn't fully matter to what at the end of the day, all that matters is how much power the oathmaker draws from it. Don Quixote swears upon justice and felling evildoers all across the city. We know not what exactly is fueling this sense of justice and heroism (or at least I don't, bc I haven't read her source material- but then again, given how much Project Moon's taking a lot of creative liberties in how they're adapting these stories, that may or may not matter. anyways, back to the matter at hand), but I feel like justice and vengeance can come hand-in-hand in some situations. Both deal with wanting to right a wrong in some way, whether it be more general or more personal. And a part of me feels like Don Quixote's enacting a vengeance she has against the inherent evil of the City by bringing what she feels is "justice" to those she can currently help. And stars know she believes in that enough to swear an oath upon it. And also I just think she deserves the Avenging Angel feature of the oath.
Ryoshu - Arcane Trickster Rogue
I don't think I need to really explain this one. She had to be able to sneak into the casino without anyone noticing she didn't have the Tingtang disguise on somehow, right? And everyone else about her feels like it screams "Arcane Trickster" to me. I dunno. Alternatively, Assassin Rogue.
Meursault - Battle Master Fighter
He's only in it for the Improved Combat Superiority features and nothing else. That's all he needs. He's going to wreck shop in the most average way possible. And y'know what, good for him.
Hong Lu - Lunar Sorcerer
You know he would.
Heathcliff - Battle Smith Artificer
Okay really hear me out here- Actually, no, there's not that big of an explanation for this one. For one thing, and I really must stress this, but Heathcliff isn't stupid dumb muscle, like I've seen a few people in the fandom interpret him as. He's pretty damn smart- being able to perfectly pick apart the circumstances of death for a fallen L Corp branch's few survivors & that stunt he pulled at the casino should be proof enough of that. Second, Artificers are best at making defenses and coming up with ways to magically attune their weapons to hit harder. And let me tell you, I am shocked at how many hits default LCB Sinner Heathcliff can take, and his Smackdown skill scares the shit out of me with how much Power it can stack, especially if paired with his Bodysack EGO. Third, Battle Smith comes with a little Steel Defender guy and I think Heathcliff deserves a little guy. Okay, maybe this was a big explanation.
Ishmael - multiclass of Oath of the Open Seas Paladin & Swashbuckler Rogue
That's right, Matt Mercer's official Homebrew's getting involved in this. Admittedly, part of this is because "oh hey there's two marine-themed classes here and Ishmael's Ishmael, this'll be funny". But there are genuine reasons for both of these. Oath of the Open Seas has a feature that allows you to push foes away by 10 feet, which can bludgeon them if they end up hitting a wall. Have you seen how many of Ishmael's attack animations involve pushing foes back with a bash-push of her shield? (Default LCB Sinner and LCCB Assistant Manager are both very guilty of this.) Not just that, but the lore and tenets of the Oath itself seem to just... fit Ishmael rather well. And Swashbuckler Rogue? Everything it can do feels like skills Ishmael could've learned while on the voyage. And combined with the Paladin's spellcasting and the Oath of the Open Sea in particular needing Charisma in some aspects, the two of them just go together like peas in a pod.
Rodion - College of Eloquence Bard
You know she would. Alternatively, College of Tragedy, perhaps once we get to learn more about her and she opens up some more.
Sinclair - Path of the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian
Shoutout to Grotto (aka gregorsamsaautism) in particular for the idea of Sinclair being a Barbarian. Imagine fighting a guy who's experiencing pure rage but he's also shaking and crying and screaming the whole time "Why Path of the Ancestral Guardian as subclass?" How else would he know Demian in this universe and have a strange and special gay relationship with him, with him being the unknowable deity granting him his power? (don't boo me i'm right /lh)
Outis - multiclass of Battle Master Fighter and Way of the Long Death Monk
She has old woman war criminal energies. You know she would. And unlike Meursault, she classed into Battle Master Fighter for all it's worth.
Gregor - Swarmkeeper Ranger
I don't need to explain this one. You know he would. (Probably not by choice, but still.) (also shoutout to Grotto in particular again for coming up with this. my old idea was circle of spores druid gregor but swarmkeeper gregor slapped ass)
Dante - Order Domain Cleric
Because this group needs at least one person in a dedicated healer role. And since they're the executive manager, why not try and act like it? Alternatively, Life Domain Cleric. Also, it would be very very funny if, before this whole amnesia business, they were an Order of the Ghostslayer Blood Hunter, until life kicked their ass and everyone else bullied them into a cleric.

alec ask game (to be honest many of these have a canon answer but i do kinda wanna hear analysis anyway):
12 (more like: do you think he does anything for his birthdays after he left the heartbreaker household)
19
25
to be fair i am literally always explaining canonical things about alec to people. that is also fun. even the headcanons (true facts that came to me in a vision) are extrapolated from canon details i list off anyway
12. how long have they been around? do you know their birthday? is their birthday the day you made them or another day? what do they think of celebrating birthdays?
he's 15 (more on the younger side) as of worm start and does not make it to his next birthday lmao. i don't know his birthday because he doesn't know his birthday--it's pointed out in his interlude that it was easy to lose track of time because he lived entirely in the cult (no going to school, no calendars, no holidays, etc), and the only indicator he would've had that it was his birthday was his father trying to force a trigger event. he triggered when he was 10 and ran away from home when he was 13, so he had 3 years w/ no way of knowing it was his birthday. it also presumably did not help his sense of time that he was constantly on drugs and severely dissociated. this is why he has to do Year Guesstimation Math when he's telling the undersiders abt his backstory in 7.1--he genuinely doesn't even know exactly how old he is.
so no, he doesn't celebrate his birthdays after he leaves. he knows he Had One, but there's no way of knowing what it was. just one more thing his father took from him forever. maybe a different person in his shoes would've picked a favorite date to celebrate as their new birthday, but alec just tells himself he doesn't care all that much. (and he doesn't, because in the grand scheme of bad things that have happened to him, not having a birthday isn't even in the first 100 worst ones). he just mentally adds a year to each end of his estimated age range for himself every time new years happens.
also, expressing outright desire to reclaim his birthday would be Admitting He Cares, and we all know how much alec does not want to do things that would involve admitting he cares.
19. are they quick to anger? what sets them off?
alec represses his emotions for two primary reasons: - because he's been taught for his entire life that if he shows he's feeling something negative people will use the information to make him feel more negative, and if he shows he's feeling something positive people will use the information to take whatever made him feel that way away from him - because if he had experienced the depths of his own feelings as a child still living in the cult he wouldn't have been able to keep himself together long enough to survive, and now he has no way to approach unpacking them without crumbling under the weight. fuck he doesn't even realize there Is a suitcase to unpack. or 50 suitcases rather.
anger is an interesting one w/ him, because unlike most emotions it's not something he's learned is always dangerous to show, and subsequently, it's one of the only emotions he doesn't near-entirely repress. in fact, utilizing it can actually be useful for survival, and so some of his ability to feel and express anger remains intact. not all or even most but like. Some.
letting someone trying to upset him see they've gotten a rise is something he would unconsciously interpret as dangerous (giving them an excuse to hurt him, showing them they've 'won,' can be dangerously close to admitting he cares, etc). but at other times, depending on the situational context, expressing anger can be a way to place himself in control, a way to unconsciously vent emotion w/o making himself vulnerable, or a way to motivate himself to push through something.
so he's okay with demonstrating that he's visibly pissed at taylor in the hospital--she's the vulnerable one in the interaction--but when cherie is trying to upset him, he shuts down and acts blasé.
as for how quick he is to anger & what sets him off w/ that framework for his behavior in mind: he's fairly quick to be annoyed, but not necessarily quick to be angry. he has poor emotional literacy for himself, so he can't really understand why he's mad beyond a surface level, and at times he doesn't even realize that he was angry until after the fact. (e.g him only realizing that he was jealous of & angry at sophia for not appreciating her normal family days after he had already acted on the emotion.) much of his anger is quick to fade because it's difficult for him to sustain any intense emotion, especially when he doesn't have the self-awareness to determine why he should keep caring so much. he's got a lot of unexamined rage towards Normal Society--for how it failed to help him as a child, for how everyone in it is unaware of how good they have it from his point of view, and for how it rejects him even now--so anything touching on those notes is liable to get him reaaaally seething. (again. with 0 idea that that he's even mad let alone Why he's mad.) Betrayal, Abandonment, His Stuff Being Fucked With, and Him Being Prodded To Provide Any Particular Response Or Action are all also liable to make him varying amounts of ticked. presumably for obvious reasons.
25. how good/bad is their hearing? what about their eyesight?
huh i've never thought abt this one before. he's probably fine in both departments bc lisa would've told him if he had smth going on that could interfere with his awareness during a job but he's certainly tied w/ rachel for undersider voted most likely to mildly need glasses and never notice.
quick everyone give me a chance to say even more things about alec vasil

for the 30 durge questions, is there a particular one you want to answer but no one has picked yet? If yes, i pick that one
LMAO ok yeah fair enough uhhhh let me think
27. How does your Dark Urge feel about giving and receiving orders?
This one is one I've thought about a lot because in general the Dark Urge exists in a position of power that's really very interesting to me and I've written characters who exist there before. There's something very intriguing about the tension of being expected to lead and direct, not just a small group or team, but an entire country or an entire cult, but still remain appropriately obedient to a larger power that determines how much power you actually get to wield. Ballard specifically doubly exists here, because his childhood was being groomed as a future matron mother for House Halvyriin, and then he almost immediately began to rebuild and take over the Bhaalist cult in Baldur's Gate. He was given the tools and the skills to lead, elocution and diplomacy and a broad education, but his ability to utilize those skills is always subject to the older matron mother or to Bhaal's approval.
This got uhhhh long so there's more under the cut. (Question from here)
Giving orders I think feels natural to Ballard. I don't think he gets the thrill of power, or the satisfaction of control, but it wouldn't occur to him to step into a situation and then not direct it. He's used to being obeyed, and again, I don't think it really affects him, but he would be very off-put if someone (say, the Chosen of another god, perhaps) were to just ignore him entirely--especially if it wasn't a behavior he could punish. Orin or the other cultists, Sceleritas, Ballard has the authority to damage them if they step out of line. Random civilians, he has the authority to damage by virtue of might makes right. Even as a child, if he ordered a member of House Halvyriin to do something, his orders could only be superseded by the matron mother herself (even if she was very expansive in the orders she had already laid down, because it is not difficult to out-think a teenager). So if Ballard tried to extend his accustomed authority to Gortash and saw it immediately shot down without even a scrap of effort or concern--it pisses him off IMMEDIATELY but also it's the first time that's happened and it's... intriguing?
Receiving orders I think is another thing entirely. Ballard only took orders from the matron mother, or whoever she had chosen to enforce the order in particular--and he only followed her orders until the day he was able to best her. Might makes right. Before Bhaal's resurrection, his orders were relayed as suggestions through Sceleritas, and that was all well and good. After the resurrection Bhaal would issue firmer directives, frequently to Ballard directly, and as it would never have occurred to him to test his willpower against his Father's, those directives were to be followed implicitly. So when Gortash tries to give him an order the first time (because why wouldn't he? It's in his blood as much as Ballard's, more so because he took that power, it was never given to him) it, like, immediately descends into violence. Kicking the shit out of Gortash doesn't actually make him any less imperious, and it isn't even as satisfying as Ballard thought it would be, for that matter. So he sulks off for like a week to stew on it, and when he comes back it's only after having completed the original directive, though neither he nor Gortash make any further reference to it.
It's not a foregone conclusion, Ballard and Gortash butt heads over control of their co-operative plans constantly, but Ballard does eventually have to accept that he genuinely enjoys handing control to Gortash and letting him issue orders and direction, some of the time. Gortash is the only person he can imagine giving that power to willingly, in fact (and oh boy isn't that is a huge factor behind the infamous prayer for forgiveness). Gortash likes best when Ballard offers his obedience willingly, but there is a satisfaction for both of them in wrestling and fighting for it, not knowing who is going to come out on top. This is as much about actual political machinations as it is about sex, but they figure the sex out much later I think.
Post-tadpole--it's different for Ballard. Because he doesn't have that overarching authority to direct him, there's no one to give him orders anymore. He isn't going to let any of the companions, certainly, not when he could kill any of them without breaking a sweat (might makes right, written still in his bones if not in his memories) but he is constantly second-guessing himself and agonizing over his decisions. This is how he ends up following the Emperor's instructions and advice for so long, in fact. Lae'zel is probably the companion who understands this best, because I think in a lot of ways Githyanki and Drow societies share an approach to surviving a hostile environment, and the authoritarian nature of a society built in that environment. So Ballard is willing to give orders and make decisions all day long, since he doesn't trust anyone else to do it competently, but it's much less comfortable for him thank he feels like it should be.
So when they reach Wyrm's Rock, and they have that confrontation at the coronation, Ballard is made incredibly off-balance by this surge of relief when Gortash explains and outlines the plan, both the previous one and moving forward. He's a huge bitch about it, but it's all bark. Ballard doesn't remember most of what they had, or much of his old life, but enough of him remembers how they worked together that he falls back into that pattern sooo easily. Gortash is definitely banking on that being the case, too.

After getting a good gauge of the Sumeru Archon quest. It inspired me to get a good look at Collei's situation from the Genshin manga once again, except with a little more context applied.
Primarily why her condition always scratched me as odd in those events. Initially I always pictured the Archon residue/God remnants playing a part of just being a force that eventually tries to conquer you. Over time, we've come to learn that without the sufficient defenses, it inevitably just kills you one way or another through healthy issues.
So what was going on in Collei's case? I believe that the AR/Delusion might've established an unforeseen link with the Eleazar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want to break the ice of the initial ability of this black fire delusion and what it does. Above all else, it actively holds the ability to give form to what is imagined by the wielder.
As explained in the manga, despite being called black fire, it doesn't burn as much as its a force that active devours. The utilizes of this technique also never go in with that intent, only to transform it into other abilities to form their use.
This is what I believe the Eleazar is taking advantage of, on top of using Collei Mind/Imagination/Will as a catalyst alongside the Archon residue. Crepus, Diluc and Barnabas all retain their consciousness when involving themselves wit the power of Delusion.
Same goes for Teppei from Inazuma's Archon Quest. In fact the guy seems like the most innocent and lacking in malicious thought compared to all of them, no branches of possession reached for him, only death through the use of these experimental delusions.
Collei on the other hand? She's experiencing Eleazar symptoms like victims in the days of old.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fact it's retaining memory on the happenings of how it got this form is another detail to take note of.
This deterioration of Collei's mind isn't from her desires becoming bastardized through dark powers. (Strictly.) She's facing a genuine inner battle with this entity that I believe is the Forbidden Knowledge itself. It managed to take the Delusion's power and fashions itself a body, a serpent, similar to the affliction of gray scales that encroaching a human's body as it eventually erodes at them.
The power of the Dark Flames were absorbed by this entity, allowing it to branch and break free in this form it takes, power that's genuinely just beyond her control outside of willpower. She holds the trigger, which is why I believe the Eleazar plays upon her hatred to allow her to embrace the madness instead.
And I just find this circumstance unique due to never seeing it before. Not in reports in game, or in any cutscenes. Usually the Eleazar kills the user by mind deterioration or the virus itself, rather than having them meltdown from the intensity and bursts of power.
Same case for those who use Delusions. Where it's simply power for a viciously high price, never the case where you're actively getting possessed by an entity.
So this simply remains one of those moments I want to keep noted. Idk if we'll ever get another chance to explore this relationship between dark powers, but I feel like this may be a mini breakthrough on Forbidden Knowledge's many forms that can be taken. Through the use of human and Delusion power, it gains the wisdom to actually manifest itself and making its madness understandable.

The Others- Headcannon for a story I'm writing
Ok so I am a little nervous about actually posting any of my writings on here. But I figured I'd give it a shot and see what you guys think? So this is gonna be just a preview into a newish species I have for the DC universe where my oc is and such. It will take place in the DC universe within Gotham so of course the Batfam will be involved as well. There will be reference to canon events but I will alter them a bit. At this point I'm rambling... So here is the backstory??
A class of humans referred to as the OTHERS, scientific name Homo Magi (they are an actually thing in the DC universe but I wanted to add my own spin to it) They are different than humans and metas which are an evolution of the homo sapien line. They exist as humans that can access magic or have latent magical abilities. They would be closer to Fae or magical beings of legends
But because they are different than humans and metas they aren't offered the same level of protection in the eyes of the laws. Mostly because those that know about them are few and far between as the majority of them have either been hunted to extinction or were captured and used for there magic.
The ones who were successful in hiding their magic were able to integrate into human society and become a little more that fairy tales and legend to modern humans.
A key thing with them was that their magic had to be awakened before they reached adulthood at 21 years of age otherwise it would be much weaker and harden to awaken. The way for the power to awaken was different for every individual but would most often happen during an event of strong emotions or danger. Before they went into hiding they underwent a controlled trial that would aide them in awakening their power without putting them in a life threatening situation.
One of the last leaders of the Others was proficient in Curse magic and to protect the descendants of Others locked away the knowledge of their species, traditions, and abilities to only be accessed by those of the Other bloodline once they unlocked their magic. Those with this knowledge are able to identify Others on sight.
In this headcannon Zatara, Zatanna, Constantine, and Ra's Al Ghul are all awakened Others.
Zatara - would be classified as having Showman magic where the larger the audience he is performing for the more powerful he is. He awakened after reaching adulthood. And having his daughter, he was able to preform the ritual for Zatanna so she was able to unlock her full magical ability.
Zatanna- would be classified as having Word magic being able to use her words to direct her magic otherwise known as spellcasting. Was awakened at the age of 14 after a test and trial by her father.
Constantine - would be classified as having White magic, or being proficient in the white arts. Specializing in contract magic and knowledge of the occult. He awakened his magic when he received a blood transfusion from the demon Nergal right before his 21st birthday. (that is a canon event but I am changing the when)
Ra's Al Ghul - would be classified as having knowledge magic or the innate knowledge of all magical artifacts and their uses (how he knew about the Lazarus pits) As well as Genius level intellect, and ability to utilize alchemy.
Please comment or message me if you would like to read more!!!!

Thank you!! This one is actually something I've tried to put some thought into so I'm excited to answer it! Based on Durge past life asks here.
8. What was their relationship with Orin like? Did it change at some point?
I had to do some googling again to make sure I wasn't talking out of my ass and breaking canon but for the sake of this, let's just make some assumptions about Orin's age and (my) Durge's age. When Maevris' urges manifested and she killed her foster family, gets taken to the temple by Sceleritas, etc etc, Mae and Orin were roughly the same age (at least in terms of being children together and growing up together, differences of aging between races aside). With Orin being born and raised among the church and being the progeny of Sarevok, she probably feels as close to blue blooded royalty as Bhaalists get. And Mae, being raised in a relatively normal environment with no clue about her lineage, who goes from thinking she was an unwanted tiefling child to learning that she is the flesh of the god of murder almost overnight, is a little overwhelmed to say the least.
I see Orin as imagining she was taking Mae under her wing, in the same way the kid who's king of the playground might. She sees Mae as an equal in status, if not quite an equal in situation - after all, Mae is some pampered, quaking Baldurian child who can barely hold a knife at this point. Mae clings to who is probably the only other child around, probably the only person who isn't bowing to her unholy destiny. They're raised side by side as sisters, trained together the whole time. Over time that feeling of being Mae's superior in status probably starts to slip, with more people deferring to Mae over Orin and Mae rising to leadership over the church. This culminates in Mae becoming the Chosen of Bhaal - something that everyone, including Orin, expected, but it still stung nonetheless.
As they reach teenage years and into adulthood, they start to grow apart a little. No animosity between them, but not as attached at the hip anymore. Maevris has more responsibilities heaped onto her shoulders, while Orin is concerned more with her ideals of glory and her "art." Orin famously has much less self control than Mae and tends to put people outside the cult ill at ease, so she is often overlooked by her sister and by Bhaal for more serious matters. From her perspective, no one respects her anymore and everyone thinks Mae is somehow better than her; and from Mae's view, Orin has the freedom to do whatever she wants without expectation and duty holding her back. I don't think Orin blames Mae or holds this against her at this point, though.
Then Mae starts spending more time outside of the temple. Doing what? Who knows; she's so secretive about it. She brings back some torture racks that had been lost to the Gondians, sure, but doesn't seem keen to explain how she pulled it off. Slowly, she starts bringing up that she's been meeting with the leader of Bane's church. Does this mean we're allying with them? No, she insists, it does not; his support is for her to utilize. Odd, but the Dead Three have worked together in the past. And Mae is more composed than the rest of the Bhaalists to deal with...diplomatic relations.
Orin sees the difference in her sister, though. She sees concessions being made to the god of tyranny's Chosen where sacrifices should be made to Bhaal. She sees Mae withdrawing from the church, withdrawing from her. This petty arms dealer is clearly trying to lure her beloved sister away from her destiny, confusing her thoughts. She was always a bit too soft, too sweet, dear thing; it must be the Baldurian childhood. But the tyrant lord and his peons are strictly off limits; no one would dare to defy their god's chosen, his direct progeny on this cursed planet. That wouldn't stop Orin, however; she's just as much Bhaal's progeny as Mae is. She's got the same training, tutoring, the same bloodright as her sister. She doesn't criticize her publicly, but in private, Orin does little to hold her tongue. Mae doesn't listen, however. And once the Absolute plot is underway and the formal alliance between the Dead Three has taken shape, it only worsens. Mae isn't even bothering to hide the relationship (if you can call it such) between herself and Gortash. It's sickening to Orin.
Maybe she feels petty, or maybe she wants to send a message, or perhaps just testing how far her dear sister is willing to push for her external alliances. Orin stages a small attack on a group of people Mae has expressly forbidden. Not important to Bhaal's goals, only to her sister's little plaything and his own earthly goals. Bodies flayed and displayed, sacrificed to Bhaal (who is rather pleased with this, actually). Mae can do nothing but grit her teeth, but it's clear that the wedge is only being driven deeper between them. When Orin gets too close to Gortash, a warning strike of a few of his personal guards, is when Mae snaps. "You have everything you could want! Why can't you let me have one damned thing for myself?"
Everything she could want? From Orin's perspective, Mae has everything. Mae has the power, the respect, Bhaal's favor. Mae can do no wrong, even when she's flagrantly disrespecting their lord by bowing to the chosen of Bane. Mae is the one holding everything Orin wants in her hands, and she doesn't even deserve it.
And that's the moment that Orin snaps. There's no plan, no grand coup, no lying in wait or laying of traps. The pounce is quick, but the act itself is agonizingly drawn out. Orin flashes between different forms - Gortash, Sceleritas, Mae's shaking child self - anyone she thinks will drive the point home as she taunts and torments her sister. Because this tiefling, this ungrateful little orphan, her sister, has turned her back on her and on them all for a treasonous fling.
And when the Chosen meet the next day to discuss their plans, Orin attends on behalf of Bhaal. Casually, as if she was always meant to be there. Because she was meant to be there, she knows, as she carelessly twists an engraved gold-and-ruby locket in her fingers that she knows the lordling will recognize.
And while Gortash's anger and rage are plain for all to see, less noticeable is the shaking in Orin's hand as she paws at the necklace, or the quiver in her voice when Gortash demands to know where Mae is. The sneer in her voice as she answers the human's demands is easily mistaken for disdain of one so beneath her. "Your little playmate has lost Bhaal's favor," she answers outloud. Because you ruined her, she repeats in her mind. Because you took my sister away from me and you ruined her.

Satoh’s Personal Comment-a-Thon Part 2
About this new series/project: Since not a lot of people comment on my works, I’ll do it myself. :3 I aim to help myself get better by getting more conscious of how I write. One of the ways that I feel like I can accomplish this is to reread my works and post comments here. This not only helps me improve my craft but also promote my works.
Title: Dragonmage Pact
Summary: The world’s most compassionate nymph incarnate and the world’s most selfish noble enter a pact to save themselves from certain death, when an army of tireless, undead soldiers besiege it. Now bound as a duo of a large talking dragon and a nonverbal mage, Rhen and Lars navigate through their new self/ves, regroup with the other nymph incarnates and their guardians, and find a way to safely undo the pact. (And maybe save the world along the way as well.)
Comments: I adore this AU. I so adore this AU.
I absolutely enjoy how Rhen and Lars keep very badly denying how much they're suffering, Rhen because she doesn't want to be a burden and Lars because of his pride. Their personalities clash and it's creating really delicious friction that organically worsen things around them. I'm also so moved by the progress of Rhen and Lars' characters in this fic. They go from barely tolerating each other, to considering their situation as not so bad after all, to actually caring for each other, to actually becoming one in mind and soul.
I also like how Rhen and Dameon are very close here. They obviously hold each other dear to their hearts. His betrayal affects Rhen terribly, while even when hypnotized into doing terrible things for Ahriman, Dameon still thinks of how to help Rhen somehow. It's so bittersweet to see them still stick by each other's side despite what had happened them. They're different now, especially Rhen, and there's nothing they can do about it, but they still like each other to some degree.
Oh, poor, poor Galahad. I think he's easily the best major character in this fic. That backstory alone could carry him to number one. He cares a lot for the nymph incarnates and this is easily the best role that his character could fulfill without being too annoying. I also adore how I used his busybody self to introduce lore.
And of course, easily the best mini arc of the story goes to the fake incarnate of Sedona. I think Lydia is a bit too goofy of a character in the original to fulfill this role, but I like how this is very in-line with how Yoko Taro writes. This is a very complex situation. On one hand, you have a community who is in dire need of salvation, or what looks like it anyway, when the world is going haywire and every other nation is crumbling to ashes. On the other hand, the deceit helps no one when Lydia isn't even an incarnate, her "guardians" are only mind-controlled and don't have powers of their own, and the people are only pushed further into their despair.
And also, surprisingly, I love this Ahriman. He has a very limited range of abilities but he's fully utilizing each one of them, most especially the mind control. He's cruel and he doesn't care about the means, as long as he gets what he wants. He's an actual, active threat and that makes him a very respectable villain. It's just too bad that Dameon's personality really prioritizes Rhen above all.
Overall, I should've properly written this fic. I should've properly written this fic for real. It's a gruelling adventure that, while horrific, I cannot take my eyes off of. The lore keeps me pulled in and I am always on the edge of my seat with every twist and turn of the story. Yes, it has weak parts, but it is just overall GOOD. I love how it starts off strong and ends off even stronger. I already miss Dragonmage Larshen and Galahad. I should draw them.

sunday afternoon, 3:13 p.m.
lorena came by briefly around 11:15 a.m., we made and ate sausage mcmuffins with egg, sang a song together while she played the guitar (dmb’s #41), i gave her a few parting/travel gifts (an iphone car charger and a tire pressure checker), we hugged, and she was gone. and i felt all sorts of bad things. sorrow. loneliness. emptiness. and also a splash of unrequited love as i saw on her location she went back to her gf for one last goodbye. and knowing that despite knowing me, despite spending as much time as she had with me, who she loved most and above all was her gf, reyna. and i was a far far 99th or 100th.
i texted ant. i texted amir. we ended up chatting for over an hour and i felt better.
but as they often do, the things around me just felt stupid and colorless and empty. and i wondered just .... i could never clean things to be as clean as i wanted, and suddenly i kind of just didn’t see the futility in anything at all, of anything.
reading Stephen Cove’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and it’s a book that i can’t/shouldn’t just read all the way through, like a novel. it needs to be broken down, digested, metabolized, in small fragments. and there are certain prompts at the end of the chapters that i think i will want to journal/reflect on before moving on. this will be my first.
“Select a problem from your work or personal life that is frustrating to you. Determine whether it is a direct, indirect, or no control problem. Identify the first step you can take in your Circle of Influence to solve it and then take that step.”
Direct control problems are solved by working on our habits.
Indirect control problems are solved by changing our methods of influence.
No control problems involve taking the responsibility to genuinely and peacefully accept these problems and learn to live with them, even though we don’t like them.
A problem that is frustrating to me is how much I get attached to people/things/situations, even places sometimes that aren’t as attached to me, that don’t care as much when things end. It happened at the end of college when I moved out of the college apartment to go to Korea, it happened when Nida got married, when Grace moved to New York, when Amy’s camping bachelorette came to a close, when Jadai broke up with me, and most recently now that Lorena has gone back to Florida.
Lorena leaving to go back to Florida: No control. Lorena not loving me as much as I love her: No control. Lorena loving her girlfriend more than she ever will me: No control.
i need to gracefully accept these truths. Genuinely and peacefully. I can still love Lorena without being hurt by her not loving me. I can love Lorena by being happy for her and encouraging her and being a good friend to her. I can focus the love that I have had for her onto me or to someone else who just might reciprocate it. Indirect control: I’m not really sure actually what the “methods of influence are.” i think this will be covered in subsequent chapters.
Direct Control: My habit, or tendency, is to sort of ..... drown in sorrow. To cry, to reach out to friends, to bemoan my situation, to drink/smoke/drug it out of me, or to just delve into it and not come out for days at a time. To sleep it out, to wait it out.
but it comes from an overall sense of being left behind, of being abandoned, of not being worthy, of somehow being left out. i hate feeling left out. i hate feeling forgotten. and i tend to sort of get triggered and just go where the feeling takes me which is to core questions about my self worth, of meaning, and rarely do I come out ahead, self assured, feeling better about myself and my situation. rather these situations just chip away at any good feeling I might have ever had about myself.
RESOLUTION: i’ve started working out/strength training more regularly, and it feels like a bit of a release. maybe i’ll just do a rep to get it out. or call a friend, and utilize that time not just to dump onto them all of my feelings, but also to hear them out. i think just wallowing in my pity is not helpful, and sometimes i’ll emerge days later with new found feelings of guilt and shame and embarassment for even having gone through that, so I need to nip it in the bud.

Why Cook at Home? Four Reasons You Should Consider
Truly. With the wealth of cheap taco restaurant food, shop food, frozen bundled food, and eateries all around, why go to the difficulty of figuring out how to cook at home?
The solution for a great many people is that they don't have any idea how. They don't have the foggiest idea what fixings to purchase or what container to utilize. They've watched others battle to put a straightforward feast on the table that turned out to be unappetizing. The examples learned in "home residing" or "home financial matters" classes have for quite some time been neglected. They haven't the faintest idea where to start.
Cheer up, and enter in to the kitchen. It's truly not a frightening spot by any means.
Regardless of whether you haven't gone to a kitchen for quite a long time - to cook, that is - just sit back and relax. Regardless of whether you can't recollect the last time you read through and completed a recipe, that is OK. Regardless of whether you have no time, no extravagant pots and container, no persistence, and no experience, I guarantee you can do this. Indeed, you.
However, what's the point? There are as many motivations to figure out how to cook as there are inexpensive food establishments at your neighborhood shopping center. First off, it's far less expensive to cook at home than it is to purchase take-out or eat at cafés many evenings, particularly whenever you've accumulated a few essential fixings. Assuming you track down a couple of recipes that enticement for you, make a rundown, and purchase just what you want, you can make seven days of suppers for about a similar measure of cash you'd spend in a mid-range café for a few dinners. Look at an eatery menu on the web and include the expenses: dish, drink, tip. Times two. Isn't it obvious?
Another explanation: cooking for yourself, by and large, is better. You control the measures of fat, sodium, carbs, or some other substance. You can purchase foods grown from the ground in season and at their pinnacle of flavor and dietary benefit as opposed to agreeing to seared lettuce or natural product that preferences like cardboard. Segment control is basically as simple as choosing how much food to put on your plate, taking out the impulse to eat that multitude of fries that accompanied your café burger.
Cooking for yourself permits you more adaptability than utilizing arranged food varieties or requesting at a café. We as a whole know something like one particular eater who makes us bonkers at whatever point she arranges at a café: hold the mayo, no onion, additional cheddar, seared to perfection however not excessively pink…you know the sort. At home, in the event that you could do without dark olives in your pasta, don't utilize them. On the off chance that you like additional basil, add it. You can utilize olive oil rather than margarine, or soy milk rather than dairy. The decisions are boundless, and your dinners are fit as you would prefer, without fail. What eatery can do that for you?
At last, cooking at home can quicker than go out. Include the time spent heading to a café, ready to be situated, ready to be served, eating, paying, then, at that point, driving home once more. You might have fixed something straightforward and delicious a lot quicker and been more agreeable simultaneously - shoes off, most loved music on the sound system, loosening up in your own home.
Figuring out how to cook doesn't mean you won't ever eat out from this point onward. Obviously you will, and you ought to! In any case, when you choose to go out, it will be on your conditions: when you can manage the cost of it, when you have taco restaurant the energy, and when you have the opportunity.

Behind enemy lines
Maribat: Robibug, Daminette, Robinette, Damibug Ao3
Part 2
“Who are you? And why do you follow me?” Ladybug asked loudly.
First there was only silence against the background of the distant noise of the night city. Then the figure made a step out of their hiding place.
It was a boy her age or maybe a little older, judging by his height and that facial features which were not hidden by his mask. He was wearing a kind of uniform: a crimson top and a dark bottom with dark green boots and gloves. The utility belt and the inside of the cape blowing in the Parisian wind were yellow.
“I am Robin.” He said. “I’m here for investigation. And that's all you need to know.”
“Not if you continue following me.” Ladybug protested. She couldn’t allow someone just walk around spying on her! What if he saw her detransforming? Her identity was protecting not only her and her family, but the miraculous box with all the powers. “What are you after?”
“As I said, I’m here to find out, why the League didn’t know about your local villain and a bunch of so-called heroes, chasing him unsuccessfully for years.”
Marinette was listening his words with raising anger. Who was this boy, and why on earth did he allow himself to judge the success of her team?!
The furious face of Chat Noir came to her mind, and Ladybug forced herself to inhale deeply and exhale slowly. Now more than ever she needed to control her emotions.
“You don’t have any rights to judge my team.” She said more calm then expected. “They do what they can to protect our city.”
“What they can and what must be done — are different things.” The boy (Robin?) spoke in such a tone as if he knew the correct answers to all the questions and there was no other truth in the world. “So, you are the leader of this circus team of self proclaimed superheroes.” He stated.
“You know nothing about them!” Marinette had difficulties to deal with her emotions again. Like really, who was this guy?! Coming from nowhere, following her on patrols, and insulting her friends without even knowing them at the very first meeting with her?! “My team is great!”
Robin raised his hand and pressed something on his wrist. A translucent screen appeared in the air above his arm, where Marinette could see multiple fight scenes playing at the same time in small windows. There were mostly her temporary heroes, and she could remember some of the videos from Ladyblog.
“Not listening to the commands of your leader, being distracted during the battle, not taking into account the abilities of the enemy.” He said. “Should I continue?”
Ladybug was silent. She knew he was right about that. But they all did what they could in those circumstances. And it wasn’t like she could trust many people with a miraculous to be returned after the fight, so Marinette didn’t really have much choice picking her team.
“Those aren’t heroes.” Robin said in the meantime. “Those are civilians using the powers they don’t really know how to use. Doesn’t make them heroes.” He turned off the screen. “It takes hundred thousand hours of training.”
“You don’t understand who we are fighting with.” She argued, but in a slightly defeated tone. “In this situation what counts most is trust, not skills. What is really important when you face Shadow Math is where your heart is.”
“Making decisions with your heart will get people killed.” Robin said coldly. “From what I’ve learn till now, you’d better give up your weapon to those who can actually use it.”
With the news about miraculous spreading around the world, Marinette expected some villains to come for them. She hoped some heroes would come helping in their fight too.
But she forgot about the third category: the heroes, who could try to take the miraculous from her, thinking they know better.
“Because of people like you, who believe that they know everything, Master Fu gave the miraculous to us — inexperienced, but not corrupted by the greedy power yet.” Ladybug replied, preparing herself for the fight. Just in case. “Because of such seekers of our magical powers, we kept this battle in silence from the world. I am the Guardian now. And I will not allow anyone to take possession of the miraculous, nor those who want to them for evil, nor those who think themselves a hero.”
For a while Robin stood in silence as if pondering what she said, but his face didn’t express any emotion. His eyes were hidden by the mask, and it irritated Marinette slightly.
“I don’t need your weapon to do my job.” He turned his head on a side. “I AM a weapon.”
He turned around and disappeared behind the wall from where he came out before.
Ladybug was staring at the wall. And once she thought Chat Noir was annoying!.. But Adrien was an angel in comparison to this... this... impudent demon!
*
Rena Furtive was hiding behind the wall, restlessly watching her friend surrounded by armored knights.
It was Dark Blade all over again, and Ladybug was all alone this time, without her partner and not able to escape for getting the other team members, standing on the middle of the square.
Shadow Math didn’t make any move for more then two weeks since his name became public. He was probably organizing his new base and preparing to strike, and when he did, it was the worst possible scenario for the heroine.
Gabriel probably knew that Adrien left Paris, and he sure knew Ladybug was patrolling alone, so he picked the victim that was strong where Ladybug was week. And used Dark Blade’s minion power to surround her, preventing from getting any help.
Alya didn’t know what to do.
Running to Marinette’s house for some miraculous, then trying to find some of the temporally holders — seemed too long. Would Ladybug be able too keep the fight until the help arrived?
Revealing herself and entering the fight by creating some illusions to distract the knights meant that Shadow Math would know she had miraculous on her as a permanent holder. And even if he won’t know it was Alya again, all the spying thing that helped them to find his lair would be over.
And all the illusions would vanish once the minions would touch them, and then what?
Rena clenched her teeth and hid behind the wall again, turning her gaze to the ally, and froze.
The boy with masked face and the costume with a cape, just like Marinette described to her one day ago, was standing few steps behind her.
“So you are going to just stand there watching your leader to be taken by the enemy?” He asked coldly.
Rena narrowed her eyes.
“Robin, was it?” She asked. “How did you find me?” Her camouflage was good, no one were able to recognize her figure, blended into the cityscape.
“Not hard to find when you know where to look.” He said arrogantly. “And this is the most obvious spying spot for that square you could pick.”
This was all Alya’d expected from Marinette’s words and worse. The guy really thought to much of himself, or too little of others. Or both.
“And what about you?” Alya was smart enough to try her own game. If this Robin-boy at list half as good as he thought about himself, they could use him. “Just came to tell me about my mistakes, or wanna show what you’ve got?” She challenged, but before he could answer she herd Ladybug’s voice.
“Lucky charm!” She yelled, and Rena turned to see, what was happening on the fighting scene.
Ladybug held in her hands a red sword in a black spot bewilderedly, looking around on a hundred of knights, surrounding her.
“Watch a real hero in action.” Alya heard behind her back and turned to face Robin, but the ally was already empty.

Someone mentioned the idea that if Lady Bone Demon has been messing with memories like theorized, that Host could fix them with the leftover power she got from her possession. Thoughts?
Dat idea comes from starsfic, don't it
Hmm... I don't really have many because I'm kind of a skeptic of the "Messing with memories" theory since it's based on like. One Line. And storytelling-wise it seems kinda impractical to me to do without tellin The Audience because it makes SO Many plot points uncertain which in turn takes away from the characters’ richness n stability, therefore makes them less engaging. The story kind of falls apart at the seams like that. N doesn't make much sense for me why she wouldn't mess with the memories more effectively than what she has goin on rn, too
But aight, lessa say that WBS has the power to earworm her way into a noggin in the first place. I’d really like to first understand how a power like that works. Is there a cooldown? Does it take a lot of energy away? Or is it the same thing like with what I’m thinkin with Six Ear’s time hearing power that some aspects of it are easy to do but some are just So ridiculously hard to properly handle that they just aren’t worth it? There IS the pressing issue that a mind is something that we don’t really understand. Memories may have designated places in the brain n we can somewhat categorize them, but they are still rather confusing
I’d guess that for the Host to properly utilize this ability, she’d have to train ridiculously a lot and with some minor things to be able to really do anything. And even after she does learn or IF she just can do the controlling thing automatically cuz she inherited the skill thru the possession, one still gotta question what type of fuck up happened to the memories. Could they have been just straight up deleted? Are they just suppressed, moved to somewhere else where the subject can’t access them? Repairing is always harder than just destroying a thing.. She can’t exactly recreate something that she does not know how looked - and recreating a memory just from hearing the retelling of the events from another doesn’t seem like a good idea to me because biases are still present, the timeline might not match up, the perspective is going to be weird, there are going to be holes in it because the reteller wouldn’t have known what did the subject do while, for example, darting behind a rock Tho I do suppose that the holes could just be blamed on natural degredation of memories and the brain
But putting the hard realism logistics away, the idea do kinda sounds fun, not gon lie. I’d imagine that it would be difficult to actually get to do it, she would probably seek permission since that is a giant breach of privacy n people like Six are going to make that incredibly difficult. If not by his attitude, he absolutely would have Some kind of shields up against psychic attacks at the post-s3 point. The idea of the Host first explaining her deal, him refusing, leaving and then later he kidnaps her because he thought about it and,,, maybe it would be..,., a Bit beneficial to undergo a thing like this...? Perhaps??
A situation would create really tasty tension between them and worries back home with team Xiaotian. Six’s head must be so fuckin messed up, it’d probably take a good while for her to comb through the memories Just to find the faulty things and then fix them too?? That poor rebenok is going to be absolutely exhausted, might not even get to finish it all

Talks Machina Highlights - Critical Role C2E111 (Sept. 29, 2020)
@eponymous-rose‘s internet is out tonight, so I’m here late and without coffee! Let’s see how many typos we can fit into an hour and a half episode.
Tonight’s guests: Ashley Williams JOHNSON, oops!! & Liam O’Brien!
We open with Brian in light-up vented sunglasses and Henry at his side, as always. Dani is very excited to be back and has fun-buns in her hair tonight. So cute! Everyone talks about how much they’re Zooming these days for work, and Liam mentions he and Matt & Marisha did a digital cocktail night. He and Dani arrange on camera to have a distanced, masked meetup in the park so Dani can see Liam’s dog again.
No announcements! Tonight, we’re discussin’ episodes 110 and 111.
Starting with the end, Brian jumps right to it by asking how they feel that Molly is alive. Liam 100% thought we’d be back to him, but still wasn’t ready when it happened. Caleb doubted he was alive. Both Liam & Ashley marvel at the numerology that keeps cropping up throughout the show. Brian hates not being able to see it at the same time the show happens live; Ashley was biting her tongue not telling him spoilers. (He doesn’t want to hear spoilers unless Yasha dies so he can be there for Ashley if needed.) Brian says he has a little reality trauma from the night Pike died in the pre-stream game; it was the first time he’d realized how much it affected the players.
Ashley’s realized how much she misses unpacking the game with Brian when they get home. She just has to sit with it until everyone else gets to see it. Brian: “Instead she comes home and I have to fill her in on the Real Housewives of Amarillo, Texas.”
Reunion dinner with Trent! Liam talks about how the way things unfolded with Trent is not at all how he imagined it in his pre-game creation; he’d expected more of a fracas, more of an unexpected clash. “Caleb might have been a different person if he’d run into these people earlier in the story. The M9 changed him before [Trent & co] came back and got to him.” He’d imagined Astrid & Eodwulf to be complicated encounters, but says what Matt’s designed has been even harder than that. A fight on a mountain is one thing, but walking into a room with “what Trent dropped, is impossible to cope with.” It also means that if what Trent said is true, anything Caleb does now is effectively of Trent’s design, even killing him.
He doesn’t think Caleb would have gone anywhere near Trent & co without the M9. “The Mighty Nein--it took a long time--but they cracked Caleb open like a walnut.”
He thinks what Matt has done is much more murky than the simplicity of murder, such as the Briarwood arc. He can’t just exact his revenge now.
Liam says that the tempation to tinker with time is no longer as all-consuming as it was. He might still be tempted if Matt dangles a bunch of carrots in front of him, but he thinks that now it might be better to make sure that that kind of thing doesn’t happen anymore for anyone else (!!!). “It’s still a nugget in his brain and it’s still possible he could be tempted by the drug, but what he wanted in the beginning was entirely selfish, but now that the M9 are involved he owes it to them, to the people of the country, even on the Dynasty side--is so complex that if Caleb were to get that carrot and chase it, he would be risking everything.”
Ashley agrees that most of their choices are no longer black and white. Many of the situations feel more like real life. Liam agrees and says he’ll sometimes make decisions that he’s both really happy with and regrets at the same time. They both look forward to what Matt will reveal in Act 3.
Brian feels it’s tough to gauge how deep they are into what Matt’s planned for the campaign. Liam says that thanks to Matt’s skill, he really doesn’t know what Caleb wants right now.
Ashley agrees, and talks about how she created Yasha to have more to overcome than Pike. She loves what Matt’s doing in terms of allowing each of them to overcome more emotional hurdles than physical ones in this campaign.
Going back to Molly’s grave was very exciting for Ashley since she wasn’t able to be there when he died in the game & wanted to do what she could to honor him. Yasha, however, was very hesitant but knew what needed to be done. She’s not very open with her emotions, but both she & Ashley were stressed. They all could feel the energy in the studio & knew Matt was about to do something mind-blowing. Liam: “You could feel all the dust in the air coalescing around Taliesin.”
Brian trips over Eodwulf. Liam tries to help him find some pronunciation shortcuts. Ashley: “You say it so beautifully.” Brian: “Thank you.” Ashley: “Not you.”
Caleb knows how wickedly intelligent & ambitious Astrid is, and was heartened by the wavering he saw in her at the dinner. However, he can’t trust her until he knows why she’s where she is.
He really feels that if they’d had this dinner 60 episodes ago, Caleb might have tilted back along the evil axis and he would have had to retire the character. He had a playlist entirely for if Caleb turned evil and left the party.
The vision of Zuala was a huge deal for Yasha, even along every other instance she’s had of being mind-controlled, etc. “That’s guilt I think she will always carry with her, but at least she’s starting to forgive herself.” Losing the chains, sprouting wings again--Ashley reiterates that she didn’t know that was even a possibility, she just picked the skeletal wings because they were dope--were huge moments in the character development. Ashley’s glad Beau was there at the moment of the first flight; Ashley thinks of the quotation “Happiness is only beautiful when it’s shared,” and because Yasha tends to keep things very much to herself, having someone there to share it made it more impactful. “That was a cool moment. There’s been a lot of healing for Yasha these last episodes.”d
Ashley also says sometimes in that moment, when all eyes are on you in a one-on-one with Matt, everything goes muffled like Saving Private Ryan. “Wub wub wub.”
Dani feels that the only way she could even have the conversation with Zuala was to let her go in the first place.
Liam thinks one of the things that Yasha & Cad share is that still waters run deep. He loves how much Yasha hangs back sometimes, only to then reveal some new moment like the fighting pit. Apparently Ashley also has a knife collection, and uses that metal side of herself when she wants to let that new side of Yasha show.
Cosplay of the Week: Crystal Armstead (@riyuski on twitter) in a Reani cosplay. Beautiful!
How does Liam feel about the return to Rexxentrum? Very, very complicated. Caleb loves magic and lights up when he sees it, which is wrapped in the Soltryce Academy; he brought folks to the dance hall for the same reason, which was wanting the M9 to see the things that he loved about the city.
Yasha felt the same way about visiting the Chantry of the Dawn. It was a memory of a very traumatic moment (almost killing Beau), but given everything that’s happened between then and now it was cathartic to see again. There’s been a lot of healing in the past few weeks. It also felt like a physical representation of Yasha’s growth, the last time she was controlled against her will like that (or at least, until she was mind-controlled by Vokodo. Ashley sighs, aggrieved.)
Brian: “The tower really feels like a love letter from Caleb to his friends.” Liam: “It is, and a love letter from Liam to his friends.” When he looked at Caleb’s spell list, he remembered how amazing the mansion was in Campaign One and how many role-playing moments it led to and knew he wanted to incorporate it. However, he knew it could never be the same as Scanlan’s mansion because Caleb doesn’t have the same improvisational genius as Scanlan does. Liam has been “tinkering with this machine” for over a year, waiting for the moment to reveal it. He loves that he got a chance to see Jester’s room in time to have her tower room reflect reality. He’d discussed the tower extensively with Dani & Matt. Brian: “Hey! What am I, chopped--what’s the saying?” Ashley: “Chopped cabbage?”
Ashley marvels at the design of the dome. Liam talks about how Caleb knowing Caleb has been abused has been slowly getting better, but he also loves now being able to juxtapose that healing with his innate love of magic and how beautiful he finds it, how he loves to use magic as his artistry. The Soltryce Academy wasn’t “Welcome to DEATH SCHOOL,” it was the Sorbonne. It was amazing, everything he wanted. It was only one bad apple within that recruited him and turned it all bad.
Liam also points out how much it means in real life to be able to express his love and care for his friends in person too.
Ashley talks about how much she loves Yasha’s armor in a meta sense because it’s so cool and useful, and great for her armor class, but struggles with what it represents in game. She might not be able to let it go due to its sheer utility, and she may have to find an in-game reason to justify keeping it.
Ashley segues a moment into talking about her velvet top which apparently has a matching velvet scrunchie. She’s asked to demonstrate the scrunchie and ties her hair up in a way that I have never in my life seen someone do with a scrunchie before, and my hair’s been waist-length most of my life. I watch it again in slow motion. How did she DO that??
Caleb’s been looking for the right time to tell Jester about his past for a long time. She’s a good person and makes him feel like he might be capable of becoming a good person at the end, because that’s how she saw him. Liam knew from Laura that Jester wouldn’t condemn him, but Caleb put it off as long as possible. He also wanted to take the time to make sure Caduceus & Yasha knew the whole story too before they went to dinner with Trent.
Liam was also relieved to get it out, because he could never remember who knew and who didn’t, and now he doesn’t have to track it anymore. “Now we can move forward. Now we can heal wounds, maybe.”
Ashley feels Cad picks up a lot, more than most people realize. Yasha was really affected by Cad’s line: “Patience can be good, but it can lead to apathy.” She really feels it opened her eyes, and she appreciated the simplicity of him pointing out her hair’s growing back white again. Having a friend notice “hey, you’re changing for the better” really means a lot. She’s interested in seeing how this means things might change with Beau.
Dani points out that it also reinforced for Yasha that she can want things too--she can be patient and just continue to be with the group, as she’s wanted, but it’s okay to want more than that too. Ashley remembers Veth asking her what her purpose is. There’s a part of her that knows Yasha is still figuring that out, and she’s interested to see how Yasha will continue to change. She’s always spent her life serving somebody--the Sky Spear, Obann--and then even after she joined the M9, it was very centered on “what do you need, what does the group need, how can I help with our next job?” She’s going to have to take some time to figure out what she wants.
Fanart of the Week! Lovely Yasha & Beau flight art by @JMNP7888. The wings look amazing!
Brian: “One of the things we want to talk to you about, Liam, is about the Vokodo fight and the FUCKING disintegrate spell.”
Liam: “That was one of the most insane 60-90 seconds of gameplay that ever existed for the table, and definitely for me, in the entire history of the show. A lot of people think I just went, oh man, just bet it all on black. But what if I told you that...I Larkin’d the first 20 seconds of that fight and then at a quarter to midnight, I forgot that the reflection was a thing? I just forgot it was a thing! I spent that whole battle thinking I’m just here to banish things. I might buff my friends a little bit, maybe I’ll counterspell, but I’m just here to banish. And it didn’t work and it didn’t work and then it did! Finally it did and Jester made it work and then he was GONE. And then everyone got greedy and it was done but we brought him BACK. And it was a quarter to midnight and I’m not an animatronic D&D lesson machine, I’m just a guy playing D&D at 11:45 at night, and he came back and everyone started Goodfellas circling him and kicking him, and Beau & Yasha are gonna kill him, and then it’s my turn? Disintegrate! And then the room was quiet, and then time passed, and Matt asked, you really cast Disintegrate? And I said yes, of course, and Matt started rolling dice, and in the back of my head I started wondering why he asked if I was rolling Disintegrate. Oh no. In the back of my brain, I was like, well, just tell him that’s not what you did. Tell him you didn’t remember the reflection thing. But he’s already rolling dice! You can’t take it back now. Hold on a second. I’m going to take you on the journey I went through. I was thinking: you have a spell save of 17. This thing wasn’t that fast. +1, +2, maybe? Anything under 14 is okay. That’s 70%. 70%. That’s okay, right? And still no one said anything to tip me off that I was in ELDRITCH MADNESS at that point, no one said anything about the reflection! And then I realize it can reflect back on us, and I realize this is...disintegrate. And then I started becoming morbidly, macabre-ly fascinated at the puppet dance of death I had created. Well, this is a mess. I have made a mess. Let’s just sit in it. And somehow, nonsensically, spectacularly, it worked out in my favor. I went home that night and I got in bed next to my wife, who was fast asleep, and I stared at the ceiling going, dude. Duuuuuuuude. Duuuuuuuuuude.”
He apparently also told his therapist about this and how terrible it was and how close he “danced myself to the precipice like a crazy person!” Marisha (as told by Liam): “Epic roll, though.”
Matt told Liam that night that if it had been reflected, it would have gone back on him. “If a player throws an M80 in the middle of a room, it would reflect on that player who threw it.”
Ashley talks about how interesting that Yasha is not performative, and yet has been doing these public performances with the harp. It’s a great experiment for Ashley--Yasha doesn’t like the attention, but feels like she is making something beautiful for the world.” She’s trying to change something about how she views herself & her place in the world. She was raised to be a weapon for the Sky Spear, but she’s also extremely gentle and loves flowers & beautiful music, and the further away she’s gotten from the tribe, she’s falling in love with gentle, beautiful things.
Liam also points out it easy (real, but simplistic) to make an entire character centered around a single personality trait: “I’m angry all the time. I’m sad all the time.” He thinks it’s more realistic to see nuance in personality.
Liam can see some paths for Caleb to find peace & do good. He doesn’t know if Caleb is conscious of those. He thinks it’s a huge step forward to admit he was molded in this direction at all and that it wasn’t all his choice, but doesn’t know if this is the same possibility as redemption.
He also mentions Essek in this answer: there was/is attraction there, both intellectual and physical--the forehead kiss was a big marker of that--and he’s interested in seeing where that goes because he’s invested in Essek’s redemption arc on its own, but Essek is not as high on the list as other things Caleb/the M9 need to work on. He loved the “high spy times” of the Essek arc and the tangled-up-ness of feelings getting involved at the same time as intense commitment to duty.
Liam always felt Matt would bring Molly back in some aspect, even though Caleb always demurred because he doesn’t believe in fate. Dani and Brian agree that this is the start of a new act.
Ashley cried at the Vilya reunion. She thought that was an incredible moment and was so glad to see Keyleth. Liam: “Keyleth as part of our story is everything to me. That story is really important to me, so getting just a glimpse of her again was so important to me.” They could all see how that affected Marisha & how special it was to her. Liam: “It was such a great note in her song or color in her painting. She achieved magnificent things and was powerful and great, but had a very heartbreaking and sad ending, so to have this sliver of joy go back in is so complex and beautiful and masterfully done.”
Aaaaaaand that’s all for tonight! Remember, no Critical Role this week. Talks will be back in two weeks. As always, don’t forget to love each other. <3
