The final batch of drawings for Mermay! Thank you all so, so much for the response. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought this series to be so well liked and successful on so many of my social media platforms.
I felt like for the final batch, I wanted to explore how paleontology influenced merfolk would look like, and how they influence ‘modern’ merfolk. (Prehistoric Planet probably influenced my decision haha)
These are the lads and lasses that help found the formation for merfolk culture, from first-of-the-firsts like the Anomalocaris and the Tiktaalik to true giants of the sea, like Shastasaurus, Livyatan and Megalodon. The Megalodon is Kara’s personal idol. (Kara’s the great white shark featured in all previous batches, here she’s teaching kids how cool history is!)
The most important figure here in Merfolk history is actually the Mosasaurus, AKA The Ocean Lord. He was a Barbarian King who hated landlubbers and was the sworn nemesis of "The Tyrant King”. He’s revered by modern Merfolk for his combination of strength, cunning, battle prowess and magnetic personality.
However, a tablet written during his time paints a different picture of the Ocean Lord: One of an arrogant, bloodthirsty ruler whose conquering ways and obsessive hatred of the landlubbers did more harm long term than anyone could have imagined.
A shout out to @miuzes , who motivated and helped me with tips all throughout the way. Another shout out @florence-is-gay / @legendary-disaster , who made fan art of Kara!. I’m STILL freaking out! Never would I expect I’d get fan art for this! :D
(Ok what is with ppls fascination with trying tk find the biggest animal?? Is it ego?? Why can’t ppl be happy with a 20ft estimate, they go right for the big honkin 50ft estimate)
Ichthyosaurs, the famous ‘fish lizards’, were among the first groups of vertebrate animals to become secondarily aquatic. They peaked really early, achieving huge sizes in the late Triassic, and then continuing as the top oceanic predators up into the Mid Jurassic. However, they were displaced in the Late Jurassic by animals like plesiosaurs, and finally went extinct in the Mid Cretaceous. Shastasaurus is an example of the Triassic giants, with one possible specimen measuring up to 69 feet long! However, there are reported fossils of even BIGGER ichthyosaurs that grew as large as blue whales!
Today Xycor brings you ridiculous news headlines from the past week in the Xycly News! Here he talks about the ARK official servers shutdown & the new Shastasaurus dossier!
Ok yknow what i am glad actually that i got a bluesky, getting my daily dose of paleo news back. anyways did you know they found ANOTHER WHALE SIZED ICHTHYOSAUR
This "fossils" pokemon are not revived from bones, but rather they are cloned from prehistoric blood samples, recovered from another fossil pokemon
This ancient Bug/Rock pokemon can be found and revived, to extract blood samples with which you can re-create the ancient pokemons, however, the blood samples recovered from the mosquito are usually deteriorated and to create a complete DNA sequence you will need to mix 2 samples. There are 4 diferente Blood samples: Mammal (Ice), Reptile (dragon), Bird (Rock) and Fish (Water)
Mammal/Reptile becomes Ice/Dragon, it is based on the inostrancevia alexandri the largest species of Gorgonopsid
Mammal/Bird becomes Ice/Rock, it is based on the Aepyornis maximus known as the "Elephant Bird", the largest terrestrial bird that ever existed
Fish/Reptile becomes Water/Dragon, it is basd on the shastasaurus sikanniensis, the largestest species of Ichtyosaurus
Fish/Bird becomes Water/Rock, it is based on the Palaeeudyptes klekowskii, the largest penguin to ever live
The man in charge of this experiment of prehistoric splicing is Professor Marrow, an expert on "Paleogenetic" and the one who discovered the whole process
Professor Marrow is based on a mix of John Hammond from "Jurassic Park" and Dr. Moreau from "The island of Dr. Moreau"
I hate the fact that WoF has modern day animals. like no way are some of these species gonna survive in a world full of dragons
I think WoF should have big extinct animals like the Palaeoloxodons, who is a absolute unit of a elephant, who could probably take down a Mudwing. Quetzalcoatlus so the dragons have some competition in the sky. And maybe the Shastasaurus can munch on some Seawings for dinner >:)
Not seen anyone post about Ichthyotitan yet. A 25m long, if the estimates are right, this thing outclasses fucking Shastasaurus!!! That’s crazy!!!! It is only known from the jaw at the moment though, so we’ll have to see what future finds reveal.
A trio of Shastasaurus ichthyosaurs have washed up onto a Triassic beach. These huge ichthyosaurs rivaled some of today's largest whales in terms of size, but they disappeared at the end of the Triassic. Later ichthyosaurs never reached these sizes again.
A group of Coelophysids have come down to the beach in search of food. They hit the jackpot!
Slow, tanky, one of the harder tames to get, acts as a mobile furnace... Sound familiar? Even the name fits. This thing would be the pride of Magma's collection and of course Maxie would be the rider.
Archie's is a lot harder. This is mostly cause Ark is somewhat lacking in aquatic tames imo, and even moreso in semiaquatic ones. Does he get an ichthyosaur for pure speed and travel, at the expense of combat ability? Mosasaur as the king of the seas? Maybe the upcoming Shastasaurus? (maybe, if the final version ends up like the original design and has a saddle that acts as a submarine!)
In the meantime, I've settled on a rather unassuming but practical tame for him; the Baryonyx. It's fast, surprisingly tanky, hits hard, and excels at both water and land combat, which I felt was a key point.
Fact for Hikari and friends: the name Shastasaurus means 'lizard of Shasta' due to its fossils being discovered in Mount Shasta. It is/was the largest ichthyosaur to ever swim the waters, growing to be 70 to 85 feet long and weighing 190,000 pounds.
