okay im bored so here are some facts about basking sharks !!
1. second largest fish in the world, behind whale sharks
2. unlike whale sharks, they give birth to a few very large babies, at 6 feet/2 meters
3. scientists believe that they give birth to the biggest babies of any fish, just beating great white sharks at 3.9-4.9 feet
3. there are large gaps in scientists' knowledge about basking sharks life history characteristics because each individual has a very large home range and they don’t stay in the same place for very long
4. they live both north and south of the equator, but not in between those two zones in the tropics
5. through some parts of the range that they live in, for example both coasts of north america, they are uncommon and live in solitude, while in some places and seasons they are fairly common and form large groups
6. it’s likely that some of the individuals that spend part of the year in the deep sea, possibly males, go back and forth between the two hemispheres without ever going to the surface
8. it is believed that male and female basking sharks live in different places and only come together to mate
9. pregnant females separate from other females during gestation, this is believed because nearly every female basking shark caught near the surface is not pregnant
10. they resemble predatory sharks, but they’re completely harmless to humans unless they open their mouths. if their mouth is open they are eating, they do this by sucking plankton and other things into their mouths as filter feeders. if you are sucked into their mouth you will drown :)
11. spend most time on the surface eating tiny planktonic prey
12. they’ve been observed leaping out of the water, scientists believe it may be a way of getting rid of parasites. i think that this is awesome yet terrifying, because imagine a 22-29 foot shark leaping out of the water. and that is just the average length, they can grow to up to 40 feet long!
yay sharks!
(sorry if some of this doesnt make sense, please tell me if something needs explained better :))
if you have a shark species you like, feel free to send an ask about it and i will research it and tell you all about that shark !!

Sharks are like so cool, did you know that sharks' skin is made up of dermal denticles, these are miniscule placoid scales that are similar to teeth, these dermal denticles are even covered in enamel, called vitro-dentine, and they also include dentine and a pulp cavity, which again makes them very comparable to teeth! Sharks are just silly little guys hehehshe!!

Great White Sharks
- known as one of the most dangerous shark species
- fairly common
- the average female grows 15-16 ft long, and the average male grows 11-13 ft long
(Extra fact: in most, if not all, shark species, the females will usually grow to be larger than their male counterparts. This is also true for most other animal species)
- live up to 200 m below the ocean, however they can reach around 900 m while migrating, as they slowly move downwards
- they are actually conflict avoidant
- they’re curious about humans, but not hungry for them. Most assaults from great whites are aggravated or accidents
- they make silly faces :>

Guys give me shark types/breeds to study and post about!!!
I’m starting with my first favorite, the Greenland Shark!!
The greenland shark is also known as the gurry shark or grey shark!! Its scientific name is the “Somniosus Mircocehphalus. It is a large shark in the “sleeper shark” family!!
Uhm uhm. Its full scientific categories are
Domain
Eukaryota
Kingdom
Animilia
Phylum
Chordata
Class
Chondrichthyes
Subclass
Elasmobranchii
Subdivision
Selachimorpha
Order
Squaliformes
Family
Somniosidae
Genus
Somniosus
Species
S. Microcephalus
They have the longest known lifespan of all of the vertebrae species!! Said lifespan is estimated to be around 250 - 500 YEARS!!!!! Like holy shit.
Its meat is actually toxic, however when its treated to reduce the toxins its actually eaten as a delicacy in iceland!!
Historically, it has been hunted mostly for its liver oil, that was until synthetic oil was developed. Now it is mostly hunted for its meat.
Some food they eat
Smaller sharks, Skates, Eels, Herring, Capelin, Arctic Char, Cod, Rosefish, Sculpins, Lumpfish, Wolffish, Flounder.
Small greenland sharks mostly eat squid!! ^^
Hmm…
Thats all for now!! :3

I love that sharks are my special interest because I can apply them to my Autism.
I have had bad imposter syndrome, thinking that I'm not so called "typical" autistic. Well, sharks remind me of autistic experience. There are over 500 different types of sharks like there are many types of autistics. Great white shark, frilled shark and epaulette shark are very different, but they're still sharks. Unfortunately some people dismiss weird-looking sharks as "ugly" and "not looking like a real shark". Like some people dismiss autistic people from "not looking like autistic." People have a certain image of a shark and a certain image of autistic in their heads and that's their problem. Shark knows it's a shark and I know I am autistic.

Basking sharks!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ignoring that I've not done this for ages Today's shark is a basking shark! Found around the coasts of the UK, mostly around Cornwall, these sharks are obviously larger than your average one, growing to around 12 meters, though they feed on zooplankton which is why most photos you'll see of them are mouth open gliding about!

(and if anyone has hopefully noticed they also happen to be what I've used on my banner)

🦈 Daily Shark Fact: 🦈
The Swell Shark (puffer shark), is so named because it is capable of puffing up its body by ingesting water or air, giving it a much larger appearance. This serves as a defensive mechanism when faced with predators, as the shark appears much larger than it actually is.

Sharks are colour blind, because of their photosynthesis they have difficultly differentiating colours!
