Yunmeng Shuangjie shadowbox!! It may be Sad Times for Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, but they look so pretty when they’re dressed in beautiful patterns and thinking angsty thoughts. :D
I really enjoyed making the shuangjie last year, so for this year’s holiday sale I knew I had to make them again! I paid extra attention to the lighting and layering, and I’m really happy with how they all come together to look like the (craft pearl!) core is faintly glowing.
This artwork will be available in my upcoming holiday sale, lovelies!
Recently, I began working on a Shadow Box concept using paper, resin, and various mix-ins in a 4" square coaster mold.
Mistborn has such a dynamic and bold aesthetic that it felt like a wonderful place to start. It was also my first Cosmere book.
At least if it's Ruined, it's still perfectly in setting.
I started by drawing out a high-contrast, dynamic silhouette of Best Girl Vin above Luthadel.
Each layer was cut out of card stock. I picked a shimmery metallic for the skyline but it doesn't read through the resin so I'll skip next time.
I poured a layer of resin mixed with gray and black mica powder for ash into the channels around the rim of the coaster.
I alternated resin and paper to space the pieces out, swirling white ink between the rooftops for Mist.
A quick peek through the bottom of the mold shows nothing shifted out of position...
The last layer has a lot of red and Garnet ink swirled in. I deliberately under-blended it to get some variety in the pockets of color.
Something I didn't anticipate is the difference in density between the paper and resin. Thin spots tried really hard to float leading to some odd curling in the corners, but nothing deal-breaking.
And the big reveal!
... kinda underwhelming. I went too hard on the mists, and a lot of that ash escaped containment making the whole effect muddied and hard to see ...
BUT WHAT IF WE BURN TIN!?
Awww yeeeah, there's our girl. The red background being transparent and irregular really let's that fiery red sun POP.
A softer background mutes those lovely Allomancy lines but the effect is just too pretty to fault it.
I learned a lot from this project and already have some exciting ideas for more!
Just a little shadowbox featuring ridiculously tiny figures and an over detailed bridge because I really love “The Lost Boys” 🦇 🌉 Wood, paint, cotton stuffing and a tiny bit of clay, 5”x7”
Some shadowboxes I've been working on as of now.
Reigisa is nearly complete, I have a sticker right now and some keychains ordered. I'm thinking I should get another sticker of similar size and place it like I did on the Touyuki one.
Touyuki is mostly done, just missing the matching enamel pin of Yukito. The seller was out and I'm waiting for them to restock.
The Elfen Lied is the first one I made not dedicated to a ship. It's just the series as a whole. These are the pieces I can find at the moment but I can certainly fit more in there.
I'm currently collecting stuff to make a single character one for Yuki Sohma (Fruits Basket). I knew there would be like no Machi stuff out there and I just am a huge fan of Yuki.
Completed shadowbox of my favorite Hazbin Hotel character, Alastor. This bad boy with be available for purchase at a craft market this weekend at Huntington Beach! Season 1 was so much fun!!!
Finally, pictures of the shadowbox I ordered to hold my latest miniatures! I have another shadowbox I bought back in college, which holds all the minis from *then*, but it's full and I needed somewhere safe for these guys.
It was advertised as for rock collections, which meant the cubbyholes are big enough for all the oddly sized minis like Boone and Legate Lanius, who are bigger than 2" on at least one dimension. It's got a hinged clear plexi door (on left) so that they're less likely to get dusty or fall out somehow.
Top row is all Fallout New Vegas: Craig Boone, Vulpes Inculta, Legate Lanius, Lucius, and Arcade Gannon.
Next row is Rowan Dane (The Outer Worlds), a character I haven't yet talked out (oops), Gunnar Volk (Fallout New Vegas, and who I want to redo next time I have spare cash to throw at Heroforge), an earlier Arcade Gannon I made from a vintage Ral Partha whitemetal figure, Willow Ironwood (Fallout 76)
Next row is an NCR soldier (another vintage Ral Partha repaint), a large white dog/wolf, and Nick Valentine (another vintage Ral Partha repaint). The Ral Parthas are slightly smaller scale than the HeroForge plastics.
I still have room for 12 more, and I want to do more, I just have to get the minis :)
I've made quite a few 3d cards in the last couple of months, so now I'm getting around to posting them all. I'm excited to see what people think. The furst one is Purrloin.
