The Little Book of Hand Shadows

“Discover the timeless magic of hand shadows through this charming volume” - Dust Jacket

This little pocket-sized book, created and drawn by Phila H. Webb with verses by Jane Corby, is reprinted and adapted from the original “Shadowgraphs Anyone Can Make” from 1927. With the help of a bright light, a blank wall (or sheet as the book suggests), and two hands, various characters and creatures can be projected, solidifying the simple entertainment and joy of shadow puppetry.

According to Phila, some of the poses may take more practice to perfect, but there is “nothing hard about any of them”. To test this, I had a self-proclaimed shadow puppet enthusiast try out some of the poses, following the instructions from the text. How do you think they did?

Azriel shadow-walked them to the front door of their home from the River Manor. Typically, he preferred to fly. But with Elain two months from giving birth to the twins, and their adopted Illyrian son, flying became too much of a challenge to do so safely. Especially since Kaden was still learning how to properly fly, having not been taught before he was left at the orphanage, nor during his time spent there.

It was something Azriel could relate to more so than anyone else. That fear of flying becomes ingrained into your mind without realizing it until you’re standing on the edge of a cliff with a looming drop before you.

Kaden had tremendously improved since they began their flying lessons, but he still struggled to maintain himself if caught in a wind draft and Azriel preferred not to have his pregnant wife in his arms should he need to save his son.

So, when it was the three of them—soon to be five, gods spare him—he preferred the easier method of transportation. He still couldn’t believe they were going to be a family of five soon. He didn’t know what he did to be blessed with such a beautiful wife and the most perfect children. Lord knows he had done atrocities for the sake of his court. But somehow, through all the darkness surrounding him, Elain saw the light he never knew was shining inside of him.

A soul to match hers.

Fairytales in French cinema

Pictures from "Princes et Princesses", a 2000 animated fairytale movie by Michel Ocelot. This movie originally was a television series called "Ciné Si" and released in 1989, but Michel Ocelot later decided to compile six of the eight episodes into one full-length movie. This movie is an anthology of fairytales from around the world, retold in various settings ranging from fantasy to science-fiction. This movie (and the series before it) is most notable for actually being a shadow-puppet production, paying homage to the works of Lotte Reiniger.
