Finding the Light. (Defining Megabird #1)

I've mentioned the term 'loremoth' quite a lot, but haven't really elaborated on my definition of it. Within Sky's in-game social community, being a 'moth', or a new player, is a visually traceable status, showing on their backs and of their clothes, showing by the lack of seasons they've experienced and glitches they've overcome. But the Lore community is a Space held externally from the game, leading to it not being so much of a visual dogma, but rather more of... An Experience.
Hungry new lore theorists are fueled by their own personal preferences of thumbnails, baits, and key words; pulled in by what they find interesting, and after they devour that magical initial subject, they hopefully will look and then find the next thing.
Each of these sudden lore hooks end up being their Drive to have more, to dig for more, and to understand more. They feel it's become special to them; that they're in on 'the secret' now.
And one of the best topics to make loremoths feel like they're in on an absurdly colossal secret... 
Is the topic of the Megabird.

In the early crazes of Lore, during the first year of Launch, interest in the Megabird skyrocketed, and when curious Sky players asked others who seemed more involved and invested in theorizing about the story, many users of Lorechat in Skycord would casually reply, "Well it's basically the god of Sky". 
Most murals and concept art depict the Megabird as a giant flowing golden angelic thing, with extravagantly long wings or tails. Sometimes it would be made of feathers, sometimes it would seemingly be shown as made of Creatures of Light.

Early concept art refers to it as "One", some concepts say "Megabird", while others say "The Megabird", and late-stage concepts begin to refrain from calling it Megabird or 'The Megabird' at all, instead detailing a concept of "The Light" that was still unarguably the same 'character' from before. Post-launch content has never described it as The Megabird.
Despite this, Megabird ended up being heavily personified from 2019 to late 2021 by the community, and fans gobbled up anything about Megabird, especially Megabird as a character; as a god who would interact with the Elders and skykids. Megabird's fanbase grew to the point where it'd be given nicknames; it's most famous moniker being "Megan the Megabird". If only for the sake of having a character to use as a foundation for bountiful headcanon and fanfics, people seemed to cling fanatically to the idea of Megan; to the idea of having a deity. Perhaps there are or aren't some further psychological takeaways from the eagerness of the fanbase to have a 'god of Sky', but let's move on to a different notation for a while, and head back into the game.

For the 4 years that players found themselves in the Descendant's era, creatures of Light have always been seen migrating at all times towards the beacon of Ascension in the Eye of Eden, but this isn't an absolute rule. Creatures often will be found frolicking and soaring wherever they want, far from the main path to Eden. Mantas will take elegant laps around wide open areas, and rarer creatures are either hardly or never seen ascending up into Orbit.

But water doesn't halt its cycle, and Light shouldn't either. Water rushes down mountains, through valleys, flooding plains and reservoirs, yet not all of the water gets to the Ocean like it should. But though it gets stuck in spots, underground rivers and evaporation ensure the water cycle will always occur. It has to be the same for Light.

The lore community has long since determined that all beings in the world of Sky (so far) all are made of Light. {There can be a post explaining that on another day, because not everybody is so willing to believe this.} This includes: creatures of Light, Ancestors, Descendants, and yes, even dark creatures are made from Light; just warped light, to be exact.
If we're to continue with our comparison to the water cycle, then this means all of those living Beings are made out of {metaphorical} water. Water flows from the Source and descends until it reaches the Main Body of the ocean, and all Light cycles throughout the world until it can get to Orbit again. This cycle of the life energy of Light flowing in and out of a main body is exactly what we need to focus on, and lo and behold, quite a few pieces of concept art confirm this.

The meaning and purpose of some of these concepts have been long forgotten, and don't reflect the lore of the game today in post-launch, but there is one big theme going on here that they still intend to this day; all Beings of Light will eventually journey to rejoin the Megabird.

We talked before about how they slowly transitioned towards using a simple base word to describe the megabird instead of giving it an almost characterizing name, and I believe they had to have done this intentionally. (Well, as intentional as TGC ever gets.)
We can and may still call it 'the Megabird', but from now on we understand that we are referring to 'the Light'. So, why did they depersonalize Megan into a character-less thing? As we ascend through orbit and into the Ocean of Light, the Main Body of our life energy; lore theorists all over the interwebs would still be looking for the character Megabird. "Where is Megabird? Surely it's that constellation above us? Maybe it's the giant gate that sends us towards rebirth? Maybe it just hasn't shown itself?" But as the voice of Aurora calls to us and the warmth of the ultimate Light pulls us in, vaporizing darkness as we come, I just have to ask:
"Isn't that the Megabird that we're entering?"

A pure, deep, limitless orb. We are drawn in by its intensity, and as we get closer to being Absorbed we can see creatures swimming in and out of its surface. In the Sea of Light. All things here in unison, all things belonging to One; each moving speck of Light, a drop of water in an endless pond of pure harmony.
Whenever we enter the Light; when we enter the Megabird, we become dissolved into that sea, and we join One in it's neverending song.
But we'll have to research further into proving THAT on Thursday, because unfortunately, this post has gotten way too long.
You might notice we're not going to end with any solid Defining going on, and that's because you're supposed to take this in and think about what you make of it. It'll be important for part two.

I finished watching Shaman King 2021 yesterday! Some scattered thoughts on Episodes 38-52!
So much happened in this episode but absolutely everything has been wiped from my brain because WHAT is Marco's battle outfit —

Man, the X-Laws' reveal was a big deal but again, it went at a 100 miles an hour so there wasn't much space/time to absorb everything... and I can't believe how huge that table has gotten, lol
Marco is. A dope.
Episode 40
For me, a Team Horohoro fan, this episode was... truly a lot. I want to know his full story (and despite what Yoh and Ren say, I know that they do, too). He was seriously amazing and guh, just such a fantastic character. I loves the kanji and etymology lesson from Hao, too.
I'm still kinda shocked that Yoh is back in the Shaman Fight as I thought that his being out of the game was a massive divergence that was going to set the series apart, but the way things have worked out is pretty cool!
And the Five Elemental warriors are gonna come from Gandhara, huh? Nice!
The new ending is GORGEOUS. Whoa whoa.
(Also, finally getting some closure for why Yoh has felt so off — poor chilled boy is so stressed.)

BUT BLOODY HELL THIS BATTLE. TBH I really want Team The Ren to win because I do feel that they've got Yoh outclassed... the Ren/Horo lightning/ice combo is just too good. Though wow, Horohoro is MAD.

I'm so close to the end and I'm so sad!
Phew, so we find out which elements the boyos are going to have! I was fully expecting Yoh to have fire, so I was super surprised that it'll be Lyserg instead. Joco with the 'Wind of Change' makes sense, as does Ren with lightning (though I'm surprised that this was an element over metal, tbh, especially since Ren made some comments about Yoh's mastery of metal where Spirit of Sword was concerned) and Horohoro with water. Yoh as the sturdy earth guy is good.
(I'm slightly angsty for Ryu... there wasn't much of an explanation from Sati and Gandhara about precisely why the Elemental Warriors had to be kiddos, apart from the established conversation about adults knowing their ceilings. I assume that there's a bit more detail in the manga.)
This fight against the rest of the world, though? Huh, dramatic! I'm a bit sketchy about the whole laser thing becaaause I thought that was spiritual energy that was fired at the island, but it couldn't have been if the whole world is aware of it? So I have questions!
Everyone chillding in the hot spring is so cute, good gracious.

The tone changes are so odd to keep up with; one second, Redseb and Seyrarm are dying and the next, Kalim is bringing everyone dinner and the guys are taking a break to recover mana when it's been explicitly stated they have 15 hours to save the world! This is so whack to me.
WAIT I nearly missed that there was a ton of stuff after the credits and djhff Horohoro doesn't like his full name?

Oh man, the way Tamiko died was actually harrowing and then she's revealed to be Kororo and Ren's just like. Horohoro is now in dope mode we must ignore him fhfjjlfj
Ren has been taking on most of these fights and his battle against Nichrom was swift, but cool; I loved Joco vs Thalim though — and Thalim himself was adorable!

I'm weeping Shaman King is so special the whole thing is just WE WILL DEFEAT THE BADDIE WITH THE POWER OF LOVE.

Episode 52
I definitely cried during the last episode because parts of the ending were so beautiful; everyone coming together to show Hao that he could be saved — that salvation is in accepting your humanity and believing in the humanity of others. And I found Hao's mother's words so freaking soothing... I'm glad that Hao missing his mother was foreshadowed earlier, but we could have had more of that, I think.
And sure, they haven't fixed the world by 2007, but that is OKAY — most of them are around 22 and at that age, I was a wreck! So they have time and their lives to look forward to and... and I guess I disagree with the folks who say that the end of Shaman King is bad because they feel 'everything was pointless'; there's a lot to do and, even with guardian ghosts, shamans can't do everything alone.
I think this is an anime I could definitely rewatch, at some point. Wow. I love these characters and, as much as I griped about this, that and the other, I loved this story.
And I think it's so interesting that Yoh just. Didn't end up as the Shaman King djbdfh that;s definitely not what I was expecting!

China's sixth-generation hunting concept follows the same design of USAF's NGAD

Images leaked in China reveal a tailless design for the Chinese sixth-generation stealth hunt (at the top of the image). The fighter has several similarities to the sixth-generation secret fighter of the U.S. Air Force (at the bottom).
China's military aviation industry has increasingly launched conceptual arts for a future stealth hunt on social media. Although these computer-rendered designs are anything but finished, one thing seems clear: the future of China's sixth-generation stealth hunt is probably tailless - just as seems to be the case of America's Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) stealth.
On January 31, 2023, the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) posted a video with the CGI conceptual art of a sixth-generation stealth. The depicted bimotor jet fighters had low-reflection diamond-shaped wings, such as Northrop-Grumman's promising YF-23 Black Widow demonstrator fighter, a mixed-wing body configuration - and without a tail.

Another video shared by AVIC on Weibo on Tuesday revealed an optimized tailless and stealth fuselage under test in the FL-3 high-speed wind tunnel.

Other signs and omens are abundant. In early January 18, a photo of a tailless fighter on a computer monitor - apparently at the China Aeronautical Radio Electronic Research Institute of China, based in Shanghai - circulated on Weibo.

The aircraft on the monitor apparently corresponds to a mysterious demonstrator without tail or mockup seen in a satellite photo of the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) factory in October 2021. CAC manufactures the fifth generation J-20 stealth fighter from China.

Meanwhile, in November 2022, a tailless hunting mockup was shown at Zhuhai's air show.

These works of art and models should be interpreted only in the broadest features at this stage. Many conceptual projects do not reach production and those who do so inevitably undergo substantial revisions.

In fact, Lockheed-Martin's conceptual work on a tailless manned fighter test called X-44 MANTA (or Multi-Axis No-Tail Aircraft) has never been carried out, except perhaps in the form of a tailless demonstrator drone also called X-44.

Rick Joe, who writes many in-depth articles about Chinese military technology and force structure, commented on social media that the art of a generic "future great tailless fighter"... is 'significant' only in the sense that AVIC would not show a high-level CGI if they were not working on a significant next-generation fighter. The details are probably not as important as 'tailless stealthhunt' is something they are signaling in a conformal way."
In general, the next sixth generation of jet fighters are expected to again emphasize stealth fuselages such as the fifth generation, but built for greater range and payload, reflecting the geographical realities of a potential US-China conflict in the western Pacific Ocean.

New expected features include artificial intelligence piloting assistance, drone control features, even more extensive network of sensors with friendly forces than that found in the F-35, which can be networked, and flexible combined cycle engines capable of sustained supersonic cruising while generating enough electricity for powerful blockers or targeted energy weapons such as lasers.
The next US Air Force NGAD fighter already exists as a flying demonstrator, but it has not yet been revealed to the public. However, the recently published conceptual art suggests a large triangular flying wing comparable to a Dorito with steel bark when seen from above. In theory, the manned NGAD fighter will be built alongside support drones and ground platforms (a "system of systems") with which it cooperates to carry out its missions.

Although China has a history of industrial espionage and imported reverse engineering combat aircraft and helicopters, its apparent inclination towards a tailless design probably reflects the convergence in similar obvious technological solutions, rather than "stealing" itself.
Lockheed recently revealed conceptual images of NGAD.
Tail fins, or horizontal and vertical stabilizers, provide stability and expanded maneuverability options for aircraft. This is traditionally important for fighter aircraft designed to maneuver opponents in combat within the visual range. The vertical stabilizer or rudder allows lateral turn movement (and helps neutralize this movement of crosswinds), while horizontal stabilizers help tilt the aircraft up or down.
But the reflective surfaces in the stabilizers also complicate and limit attempts to reduce the cross-section of the radar of a warplane, especially when examined from behind or from the side. For this reason, "flying wings" without stabilizers appear in the U.S. B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and in stealth drones such as the RQ-170. Removing the stabilizers also reduces weight and drag, increasing the range and sustainable cruising speed.
Tailless aircraft usually rely on computer-assisted fly-by-wire systems to manipulate the flaps on the wings to maneuver and compensate for reduced stability. An article in China's Global Times suggests that split brake flaps and thrust vectorization engines (which have mobile exhaust nozzles) can also be used to provide an additional maneuvering mechanism. China has made efforts to develop and test native thrust vector control engines in J-10 single-engine and J-20 twin-engine fighters, although it still does not seem to be a standardized

Although these methods may not fully restore the maneuverability options offered by the stabilizers, the U.S. Air Force and China seem to agree that the future air war will be fought and won mainly in combat beyond visual range (BVR). For this premise, the benefits of greater stealth outweigh the loss of maneuverability.
When it comes to air-to-air combat, the U.S. still leads in stealth technology and much more mature engine manufacturing capability. But in one respect, China has an advantage due to the launch of the PL-15 and PL-21 long-range missiles, while the production of long-range AIM-260 missiles is not expected until 2026. Modern Chinese fighters, unlike Russians, also have stealth and jammer-resistant AESA radars, although their capacity level compared to more mature AESA radars in U.S. fighters is unclear.
A recent series of war games from the think tank CSIS, simulating an attempt to invade Taiwan in 2026, found that American bombers throwing missiles hundreds of kilometers east of the island could inflict massive damage sustainably on the People's Liberation Army Navy. Therefore, the PLA Air Force probably wants long-range stealth fighters that can pass through air defenses and fighter patrols near Taiwan to attack U.S. bombers that launch long-range missiles out of visual range.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Air Force wants the NGAD to have the extended range (more than 1,000 nautical miles) necessary to escort these bombers through the Pacific Ocean operating from bases out of reach of most of China's powerful ballistic missiles. Therefore, it is no surprise that both air forces are apparently seeking widely similar sixth-generation hunting concepts.

2022 Plans
Hi all, it's been a while! As this post is a bit long, I will put it under a 'read more'.
TLDR: Secret Manta 2022 may not occur unless I can get myself motivated again or more volunteers are brought in. There will be changes to the rules from last year despite this, and people that were kicked/banned from the event due to certain content on their blog may be allowed back into the event.
While it's been typical of us to go quiet until autumn rolls around, I feel it's worth mentioning that Secret Manta may be going through a few changes.
This was the first big fandom event I've ever organized in 2020, and I was happy and excited when people flocked to join the event I had cooked up to help unite the community. It was rough running it all on my own, and things were hard to keep track of.
When 2021 rolled around, I wanted to try being more organized and strict. I brought in friends I felt I could count on to help run the event, set up rules, made forms for people to join with, and even made a while discord server to keep everyone in one place.
With autumn of 2022 coming around now, I at first considered rule changes, shifting things around, and building a new discord. Now, I find that I may not have the motivation to host the event, even with the help of my co-hosts.
I will be making changes to the rules, being more lenient on people who can join the event [I felt some restrictions were too harsh, and built on a sort of irrational thought process at the time]. People that were kicked/banned from the event last year due to content on their blog can reapply this/next year as a participant.
If, by November this year, I continue to lack the motivation to run the event myself, the event may not pull through this year. I will open moderation and '''staff''' positions for the event if there's people that want to help with bringing the event to light this year.

I am also working on a demo for a plague doctor dating sim called "Plagues", rendered in two separate ways, one version being a choose your own adventure text game and another version as a typical visual novel.
A smaller project of mine is a comic called Sky Lit Skies, which is based on Sky: Children of the Light with lore differences. I also run @secret-manta, a secret santa event that I started up in 2020 to bring some joy to the community of Sky.
HOW CAN I SUPPORT YOU?
I currently have commissions open [which will be more important in the future] and take them exclusively through my Ko-Fi account. While I don't have a subscription-based supporter system yet, it'll be in the works eventually when I can configure account settings better.

Blank Manta #4 DC Comics 2021 Written by Chuck Brown Illustrated by Matthew Dow Smith Coloured by Marissa Louise Lettered by Clayton Cowles    Devil Ray has his sights set on Atlantis, and he races to put his grand plans into motion before Black Manta can unlock the secrets of the mysterious and deadly orichalcum metal. Meanwhile, Torrid forms an uneasy alliance with Manta and Gallous the Goat following their throwdown in Ethiopian airspace. But perhaps her reticence is not unfounded, as Manta’s villainous nature emerges on their quest for the truth.    I am a fan of the story here.  Torrid and Manta have an uneasy alliance now and while neither trusts the other they do share a common goal.  This of course is the deadly orichalcum metal and how to destroy it.  I like the way Chuck is managing to weave the entire story around this metal and in doing so making some strange bedfellows including, spoiler alert, the longest living and creator of the Global Guardians Dr. Mist.  Side note, now I want to see Primal Force make a comeback.  We also finally see Aquaman making an appearance as he goes after Devil Ray for what he did to the Council.  I mean with all these folks running around this book I’m impressed with how Chuck manages to streamline the story so that nothing feels rushed, over crowded or glossed over.      The way that this is being told is extremely well done.  The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information are presented exceptionally well.  The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does a wonderful job keeping these ever changing and evolving personalities at the forefront.  The pacing is excellent and as it moves the story forward and we see more of the story being revealed we are more intrigued than ever before.    I am pretty impressed with how we see this being structured as well as how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen.  I am also liking the way that we see these layers open up new avenues to be explored.  Whether they all will be explored or not they all add this great depth, dimension and complexity to the story.  How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward are impeccably handled.      I am not a fan of the interiors here.  This isn’t something that I think fits this story or would find myself gravitating towards.  A lot of the linework is thick and one note and there are many times when Torrid doesn’t seem to be shown very well and looks very generic.  I know Matthew has some artistic chops so seeing this being so basic surprises me.  I am more impressed with the backgrounds that we see being utilised than I am by the characters themselves and it should be the other way around or all should be done in the same fashion.  Again this is MY opinion I am not speaking for anyone else and I’ve seen Matthew do some fantastic work in the past so this baffles me.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows a talented eye for storytelling. ​    Thankfully the story is so strong and the art isn’t so bad so it can still be an enjoyable read.  It is most definitely worth reading and who knows maybe you’ll love Matthew’s simple style here, let me know what you think of it.  I am loving the way we see Black Manta and how he makes no bones about being a villain with no intentions of being mistaken for someone who can be heroic.  With some strong, interesting writing and stellar characterisation this is an intriguing little story.

2021 Entry Form!
Here's the form this year everyone!
The link to the Discord server is at the end of the form and is the only way into the server. There are options for people who want to enter the server and not join the event.
Before You Enter!
When you first open the form, there will be a list of rules that count for the event and server, and it is important that you read through them for qualification purposes. If you are found to break the rules in any way, you can be banned from the server and possibly the event.
Backup Artists are not a part of the main event. Signing up to be a backup artist means you are on standby in case of someone dropping out.
If you sign up saying you are unsure of how you want to participate, you have until December 1st to come to a decision, or else you will be counted as an observer.
Dates
Pairs will be made on December 1st, and the event will end on December 31st, like last year. Heart Trades can be set up whenever people interested want and will end the same day as the main event, however, hosts must be informed when a pair or group is made for tracking purposes.
Extensions can go up to January 4th. If that doesn't work out for you, or you need to drop out before the posting date, you can hand over the prompt to a host and they will fill it themselves or offer the prompt to backup artists.
