Marine Biology Story of the Day:

Hey guys.

Wow, thanks for all of the follows, reblogs, and shares.  I’ve always wanted to do more science outreach like this but I wasn’t really sure how on social media (I’ve always been real bad at social media.  I’m not a good millennial). So this is making my day guys:)

So, we are gonna kind of switch gears here--my husband suggested that I talk about a recent research trip that I went on last September.  I got the chance to go on NOAA’s shark and red snapper long-line research trip.  

Ya’ll, I got to tag tiger sharks. 

We left out of Pascagoula, Mississippi and our trek took us out into the Gulf of Mexico.  This time I didn’t have to do any sailing, instead we left on one of NOAA’s R/Vs (research vessel), the Oregon II.  What happened to the Oregon I? Idk. 

Long-lining is a pretty simple method of fish capture.  It involves one “long line” with two buoys on either end (this line is a mile+ long in length) and on this long line are hundreds of secondary baited hooks.  The great thing about long-lining is that you can catch faster and larger fish than other conventional fishing methods, and often, if you have a short “soaking” time (that’s the time you leave your long-line in the water, i.e., it’s fishing time) you can release most of the animals alive and relatively unharmed.

So the main goal of this research is to survey large swaths of the gulf and get a better idea of how many sharks are out there and how the shark populations are doing from year to year.  We also take small fin clips and get genetic data on the populations--this way we can understand more about the genetic health of the population as a whole.  The more genetically diverse the population is, the healthier it’s going to be in the long run and the better the population can survive disaster level events.  We also tag sharks--this way if another fisherman or scientist catches them, we can get a better idea of their movements through out the gulf. 

SOOOO anyway, I once again got put on night sampling (from Midnight to Noon, I was dying.  My body was like, “why did you do this to me?”). A night of sampling went like this--we’d go to our stations in the gulf, put out our longlines, let them soak for one hour, haul them up, and process the catch (measuring, tagging, fin clipping, releasing). And boy, did we get some cool stuff.

Blacktip Reef Shark that I was struggling with.  When you held them like that, you would get “shark burn” from their skin--it was kind of like getting a mild rash, but with the bigger sharks, that’s the only way you could handle them.  

For the larger sharks, we would pull them onto a large cradle to handle them because it was waaaaay to dangerous to handle them ourselves.  The cradle also weighed the animals for us.

For those of you who have concerns about handling the animals out of the water--we did it as quick as possible, it was like being on a pit crew.  One person would get the hook out, another would take data, and another would fin clip and tag, and if we had an extra person, photographer. We couldn’t necessarily dive on these stations to try to tag sharks like you can in tropical reef locations, this was the open ocean essentially, pretty deep, often with less than ideal diving conditions.  NOAA takes a lot of care in the safety of the crew and the animals, so this is essentially the best way to get the amount of data needed on a large population while releasing animals alive.  Large datasets like this allow for better management of regulations and laws surrounding these amazing animals.

shared intentions: leveling up at helping

Today a friend installed a sink in my basement. I know nothing about plumbing, so I hung around to watch. When it was clear I could help him with some action, I did: holding a pipe steady while he cut, sanding the second end after watching him do the first. It was tempting to pick up the installation instructions and try to contribute ideas, but I knew better.

This works with pairing on code, too: when someone else has all the context, I’m not gonna make them explain to me top-down what we’re doing, not at a level detailed enough that I could contribute. If I can participate in the action they’re currently taking, then I can help. As I gain context, I can contribute at a higher level: suggesting a different path when one gets hard, recognizing potential problems as we embed them. If I try to contribute at too high a level, then I force my partner to justify decisions they’ve made. Even if I’m right (unlikely), they don’t experience that as help.

Next time I join a new team, I’m going to remember this. I don’t have to have all the context to help with actions in progress. As I gain context, I can help at a higher level.

The ability to shared intentions is what makes us human. (from The Righteous Mind, by Haidt) This applies at many levels, from a mission statement down to a task. (seamaps illustrate this.) I can help at the levels that I understand, and gain understanding in the process.

LÀM SAO TỰ HỌC TIẾNG ANH GIỎI - không cần đi học thêm ?

1. Mục tiêu của việc học:Bật kênh truyền hình nước ngoài lên hiểu được hoàn toàn. Đọc sách bằng Tiếng anh cũng hiểu hoàn toàn. Gặp người Mỹ nói với họ thoải mái và không cảm thấy khó diễn đạt ý của mình. Đừng bao giờ học chỉ để lấy IELTS hoặc TOEIC. Ngôn ngữ là phải dùng được, ngôn ngữ chỉ để thi là ngôn ngữ chết.2. Phương pháp tiếp cận:Cái gì mình phải yêu thì mới giỏi được, ghét thì không đời nào. Vì thế nên đừng cắm đầu vào học quyển Grammar xanh xanh của Raymond Murfy nữa. Phải bắt đầu từ những thứ mình thấy thích như nhạc, phim, truyện…3. Học cái đầu tiên: Phát âm. Phát âm. Phát âm. Chăm nghe là chắc chắc giỏi tiếng Anh. Và nghe là cách học ngôn ngữ tốt nhất. Nghe ngày nghe đêm không cần hiểu. Bắt đầu nghe bằng cái thật chậm trước đã. Sau 2-3 tuần nghe liên tục thế có thể bắt đầu nghe nhạc và phim.

5. Từ mới là chìa khoá:

Phải có 1 quyển sổ siêu đẹp siêu cute (cả con trai cũng nên mua sổ cute =))) ) để cho mình thật thích viết vào đó, nên viết bút đỏ. Chuyên ghi lại những gì mình học được trong ngày, những “tín hiệu” tiếng Anh mà mình gặp được và học được trong ngày. 1 ngày 10 từ trong 6 tháng chắc chắn là nghe hiểu được khá khá rồi. Dùng cả giấy dán loạn xị trong nhà nữa nhé, viết to đẹp và trang trí lên nữa.

Ngày xưa mình học 50-100 từ/ngày . Do áp dụng kĩ thuật âm thanh tương tự trong quyển Tôi Tài Giỏi ấy. Nhưng không phải ai cũng học được theo cách này,cần sáng tạo 1 tí. Học từ mới qua phim và nhạc, thấy cái văn cảnh nào mình thích thì ghi lại, nhớ là chỉ thấy cái nào mình thích và cho mình nhiều cảm xúc thôi. Học qua quyển Vocabulary in Use trình độ elementary cũng hay.

Sẽ có những thứ các bạn biết thừa các từ lẻ nhưng đọc chẳng hiểu (ví dụ as long as hay là work out…) thì đó là idioms.

6. Nói:

Grammar kills your speaking. Nói dở cũng được nhưng phải nói ra thật nhiều.

Để nói có ngữ điệu hay thì không gì bằng nhại phim, người ta nói gì mình nhại theo đó là tự dưng sau 1 tháng sẽ có ngữ điệu tự nhiên. Khi người ta không nói thì mình ngồi bình luận phim hoặc diễn tả hành động diễn viên bằng lời. Cách nữa học nói là luyện nghĩ bằng tiếng Anh. Dịch toàn bộ câu mà mình nghe dc từ người nói chuyện với mình sang tiếng Anh. Dịch keyword thôi nhé, không thì lại không kịp.

Đi các câu lạc bộ speaking như Seamap cũng hay. Không thì ngồi nhà lẩm bẩm 1 mình hoặc nói chuyện với đứa cùng phòng cũng được

7. Đọc và viết:

Đọc truyện đê. Manga là thứ rất lôi cuốn và dễ vào đầu. Search Doraemon hay là Dragon balls, Naruto… (cái này cực kì cực kì hay :D)

Đọc Harry Potter bằng English cũng hay, miễn là cái gì mình thích đọc là được. Hoặc truyện cười .

Đọc sách Kinh Doanh bằng tiếng Anh. Phải chấp nhận là 3 quyển đầu đọc chỉ để học. Quyển thứ 4 đọc là sẽ hiểu hiểu.

Đọc nhiều là viết sẽ lên .

* MỘT SỐ TOOL LUYỆN VIẾT

1. Daily Page sẽ gửi mail cho bạn mỗi ngày vào một giờ nhất điện để nhắc nhở bạn viết về một chủ đề gì đó. Sau khi viết xong bạn có thể share hoặc giữ lại đọc. 2. 750 Words là một trang khuyến khích bạn viết 750 từ mỗi ngày về bất cứ gì bạn có thể nghĩ ra. Trang này như kiểu duoLingo ấy, bạn cố gắng duy trì thói quen mỗi ngày để nhận được điểm.3. Twords cũng tương tự như các trang trên, có thêm một tính năng là bạn có thể kết nối cùng người khác.

3) Listen and write: giúp bạn luyện kỹ năng Listening theo phương pháp nghe chép chính tả

4) VoiceTube:  giúp bạn luyện cả Listening lẫn Speaking. Mình thường dùng để luyện Speaking nhái lại giọng đọc của người bản xứ qua các video Ted.com, CNN student news. Rất hay. Thậm chí là luyện Speaking qua các video tạo động lực nữa.

5) IeltsSimon: Quá nổi tiếng. Simon có nhiều bài hướng dẫn cả 4 kỹ năng rất bổ ích. Writing theo mình thấy là hay nhất. Bạn nào chịu khó lục tung những bài viết của Simon từ 2009 đổ lại đến giờ. Đọc hết -> ở nhà tự học Writing cũng được.

6) English Page: trang hệ thống ngữ pháp tiếng Anh có thứ tự lớp lang và rất dễ hiểu

8. Không bao giờ được bỏ cuộc

Thuốc có thể hợp với người này không hợp với người nọ, bạn không học có hứng chỉ là do chưa tìm được đúng thứ mình thích và chưa nỗ lực đủ thôi. Không được trách hay đổ lỗi vì 1 cái gì đó mà 10 năm học rồi vẫn không giỏi tiếng Anh. Tất cả là do mình. Đừng đợi đến khi ra trường rồi mới học vì chắc chắn chẳng còn thời gian đâu. Việc hôm nay là của hôm nay.Nhớ là không ngừng tìm cho mình chỗ học mới, phương pháp mới và tài liệu mới nhé. Mình ngày xưa mất công down và mua tới gần 200GB tài liệu cơ đấy. Tiếng Việt đã là ngôn ngữ khó nhất nhì thế giới rồi đấy. Tiếng Anh là còn dễ chán. CHẮC CHẮN bạn có thể giỏi mà.Trong 1000 sinh viên chắc chỉ có khoảng dưới 100 sinh viên là giỏi tiếng Anh, 80 trong số giỏi ấy là từ khối D và có sẵn năng khiếu nào đó về ngôn ngữ rồi. Và 20 là từ khối A, và trong 20 ấy chắc chỉ có vài ba người là tự học thành tài - số này hiếm như lá mùa thu. Những gì bạn được đọc là thuộc vào hàng rất hiếm đó.

The strategy, according to Pentagon spokesman Johnny Michael, will detail how the Department of Defense (DOD) “can best defend the U.S. national interests and support security and stability in the Arctic,” in line with the announcement last year of a new defense strategy that would put a military focus on the “great-power competition” with Russia and China as opposed to a worldwide counter-terrorism focal point. Both Russia and China have, in recent times, increased their military presence in the once hushed pocket of earth’s northmost terrain. Russia has ramped up its fleet of icebreaker ships and revived military bases built during the Cold War era. By comparison, the report states, the only functional heavy icebreaker belonging to the U.S. is the Polar Star, “which was built in the 1970s with a 30-year life expectancy.” Moreover, “China has significantly increased its strategic research and development in the Arctic” with hundreds of scientists posted between Norway and to its Polar Research Institute in China (PRIC). "The Arctic is experiencing the most unprecedented transition in human history," report lead author Emily Osborne, chief of Arctic research for NOAA, said Tuesday. What's happening is a big deal, said University of Colorado environmental science program director Waleed Abdalati, NASA's former chief scientist who was not part of the NOAA report. "It's a new Arctic. We've gone from white to blue," said Abdalati, adding that he normally wouldn't use the word "scary" but it applies. And that means other problems. "Continued warming of the Arctic atmosphere and ocean are driving broad change in the environmental system in predicted, and, also, unexpected ways," the NOAA report said. One of the most noticeable problems was a record low sea ice in winter in the Bering Sea in 2017 and 2018, scientists said. In February the Bering Sea "lost an area of ice the area of Idaho," said Dartmouth College engineering professor Donald Perovich, a report card co-author. This is a problem because the oldest and thickest sea ice is down 95 percent from 30 years ago. In 1985, about one-sixth of Arctic sea ice was thick multi-year ice, now it is maybe one-hundredth, Perovich said. University of Alaska Fairbanks marine mammal biologist Gay Sheffield not only studies the record low ice, but she lives it daily in Nome, far north on the Bering Sea. "I left Nome and we had open water in December," Sheffield said at the American Geophysical Union conference in Washington. "It's very much impacting us." "Having this area ice free is having this massive environmental change," Sheffield said, adding there's been a "multi-species die off" of ocean life. 02: what’s your current job? I teach English at public junior high and elementary schools in a decent-sized city in Japan

03: what are you talented at? I’m good at making stories; I write fiction (mostly erotic and vaguely supernatural) in my downtime. And I’ve got a knack for picking up new languages, or breaking a language down to see all its moving parts and tinker around with them. I do poetry sometimes, but far more often I do geeky analysis of internet speech for fun. And I’m not half bad at translating from one language to another. So, essentially...words. I’m talented at words.

04: what is a big goal you are working towards (or have already achieved)? Right now my big goal is getting to where I can make a living at least partially off my writing. It’s still a ways off, but I’m chipping away at the planting-seeds stage, gathering up a few stories to write/polish for self-publishing, and I’ll see how they do before making any big moves. Oh, and there’s my big fanfic; in addition to fun, I’m using it as a test run for finishing a long project.

05: what’s your aesthetic? oversized sweaters and warm drinks in mugs and sitting in shabby old cafes run by hippies and windy days and late mornings and long walks through quiet neighborhoods and cool colors hit by warm natural light (but also black/pink combos and cat ears and pastel hair and everything else you could imagine from the words “emo teenager at an anime convention” including the bits about being a human disaster)

06: do you collect anything? nothing on purpose; books and stuffed animals and art prints seem to be the things I accumulate and can’t let go of

09: good advice to give? don’t close doors on yourself before you’ve even tried to walk through them. If there’s something you want to do or become, but you’re scared (of what others will think, of how you might change, of whether it will even work), do yourself a favor and just give it a try. Even a little try, a quick tiny step onto the threshold to see if it’s something you want after all, even if you’re still scared the whole time, don’t let it stop you. I promise, it’s worth it.
