Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) review
Tumblr media
Someone should call child services, as Kong uses a baby monkey as a weapon and flails him around like a whip, using the poor little fella to bash against incoming enemies. Granted the little chap is durable, but like….. I’m sorry, this movie is ridiculous. Like I can’t even!
Plot: Godzilla and the almighty Kong face a colossal threat hidden deep within the planet, challenging their very existence and the survival of the human race.
2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong holds a special place in my heart in that during COVID-19 it was one of the first and only films to come out during lockdown. I recall sitting in my living room suffering from high depression (I mean, who wasn’t at that time, am I right??) and I stuck on the Godzilla vs Kong film with low expectations……and I had the greatest time ever. By no means was it a masterpiece. It’s even far away from being a good film, but at that time when I was cinema-deprived and life was in a constant state of limbo, a big trashy Hollywood blockbuster with two massive CGI monsters beating the living crap of each other was exactly the entertainment I needed.
In cometh Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Naturally we’re no longer in a pandemic so the WOW factor is gone, and also Godzilla Minus One only recently came out reminding us that Godzilla can be sophisticated when need be. That being said, am I opposed to seeing some ridiculously over-the-top kaiju brawls for absolutely no other reason other than Hollywood wanting to throw money against the wall and seeing what happens? Yes. Look, from the set-up the whole thing doesn’t make sense in the first place. I get it is fantasy and suspension of disbelief is required, but it’s a giant walking nuclear power plant that holds the title of king of the monsters against a bloody monkeh. I don’t care how cool or likeable Kong is, if we’re being realistic he’d get smushed just by touching Godzilla. Like, ain’t that lizard boi radioactive?? Last time I checked radioactivity is pretty fatal. Kong should have developed multiple forms of cancer since the 2021 film, I’m just saying. But again, that’s if we’re thinking logically, however as we’ve learned from these MonsterVerse movies, logic isn’t a word that exists. So let’s enjoy the lizard and monkeh for what they are - bring it on!!
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is exactly what you expect it to be… in the last 30 minutes. The first hour and a half is actually a casual sequel to Kong: Skull Island, with Godzilla a fleeting cameo just getting up to random shenanigans, with every appearance lasting no longer than 5 seconds. I’m serious, Godzilla to this movie is like Scrat is to the Ice Age movies. If you recall the little saber-toothed squirrel hardly ever connects to the main plot-line of those films, and instead is only obsessed with getting his stupid acorn. Same with Godzilla, he fights random kaijus just cause. He takes naps in the Colosseum just cause. He eats nuclear plants for breakfast just cause. He turns Barbie-level pink just cause. His entire role in this movie is just cause. Otherwise this is through and through a King Kong movie. Not that I’m complaining, if you want to make a somewhat engaging and emotionally resonant narrative (as if this movie has a plot!), it’s easier to focus on Kong as he has the baggage of being lonely and wanting to find a home and more of his kind, so there’s something there to work with. So we spend most of the movie wit Kong as he explores Hollow Earth that’s discovered from the previous film, and I quite enjoyed all that. Does the movie need to be 2 hours long? Nope, as the whole Hollow Earth story-line is dragged out so much when in fact all that happens could have easily been told in the size of a short film. Essentially nothing much happens is what I’m saying. Like the whole thing is a set-up for the inevitable and highly anticipated final showdown that we’ve all paid for.
About the final showdown - it’s so dumb. I mean the whole movie is dumb, but the final battle breaks any last remaining realm of reason and turns into this crazy bonkers monsters v monsters smashy-bashy bonkers beat ‘em up, and it was absolutely fantastic! Again, I fully admit the stupidity of it all, but watching this movie’s finale in a crowded theatre with everyone cheering, laughing, clapping and howling alongside all the CGI madness that is thrown at our faces - it was awesome! I’d give the final 30 minutes a 10/10 score easily, as it is exactly what we want from a Godzilla and Kong movie. Godzilla spears Kong through a pyramid and then immediately follows that up with a suplex. That right there is cinematic genius!! The rest of the movie is fine and has its moments, but is just a meandering set-up for that ending.
This being a MonsterVerse movie naturally there are also some human characters that we are forced to care about. Like I give a f***, gimme me more lizard and monkeh!!! I want them here, and I want them now! To be fair the producers must have listened to the audience feedback as there is much less human stuff in this movie. There’s a useless sub-plot with Rebecca Hall and her adopted daughter that was so boring and generic and was the dullest part of the movie. Brian Tyree Henry and Dan Stevens are a delight though, providing some enjoyable comedic tongue in cheek, with Stevens especially excelling at the one-liner quips. Nice also to see Stevens teaming back up with director Adam Wingard, the two having previously worked on the wonderful indie thriller The Guest. Honestly if you have not seen The Guest you’re missing out big time - a delightful slice of action horror with a fantastic atmosphere that sucks you in with a dash of dry black comedy edge.
Speaking of Adam Wingard, he’s evidently a good match with these goofy Fast & Furious-level silly monster flicks. He directs the movie using a fun colourful visual palette, with some fantastic sci-fi set pieces, and Hollow Earth is reminiscent very much of a Jules Verne-type adventure locale, very much in the vain of a Journey to the Centre of the Earth, or a Mysterious Island. There’s also a strong 80’s retro vibe to the movie with the techno-synth music score from Junkie XL that had strong Thor: Ragnarok feels to it. I must say through all its stupidity, visually the film is really cinematic and looks awesome on the big screen.
I had a solid time with Godzilla x Kong, especially with those last 30 minutes. Satisfyingly entertaining blockbuster fast-food. It does get a while to get there, and also the movie is fit with so many plot holes and inconsistencies, and also it really did feel like the writers were making things up as they were going along, but I don’t care. This was never intended to be high calibre award worthy filmmaking. It’s only a monkeh, standing in front of a radioactive lizard, asking him to fight together. Really entertaining and super fun. Best part was when it was revealed that Kong could talk and screamed “it’s KONGIN TIME!!’
Overall score: 6/10

Ok here is an official Ice Age ranking
Rankings + Explanations under the cut, starting from best going to worst. As always, this is all my own opinion, and you are free to disagree.
1. Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
This is heavily biased but also I think Ice Age 3 has the perfect balance between completely wacky and actual heartfelt moments in an Ice Age movie. It didn't go totally overboard, and Buck is a wonderful addition to the series. Who can forget the story about how he lost his eye? Simon Pegg absolutely chewed this role up, and he really makes the movie what it is.
Ellie isn't sidelined because she's pregnant, she's allowed to be badass, and Manny learns some important lessons about not always being the protector. One thing that sticks with me is that Manny misses the moment Peaches is born (only Diego is there). I know that can be, like, a huge thing for some people, but even so, he sees his kid and feels nothing but love and relief. He doesn't feel emasculated by having his best friend there instead of him or resentment for missing that moment or some other petty bullshit. It didn't matter to him, what mattered was that his family was safe. That fucking gets me, y'know? I think that's the perfect encapsulation of what he had to learn - like I said, that he can't always be the protector, but also that he can rely on others when the going gets tough and he can't be there or can't do anything. It's important to show that, I think. D'you get me? You get me.
As much as Scratte's existence is, like, a meme, her and Scrat's sideplot was great, too. The tango? The fucking tango? Hello? I love the tango. The tango is great. And so is the "Alone Again" sequence, it leaves me in stitches. Having the acorn be like an actual character was a great choice in this case.
Finally, it's very visually distinct to the other movies thanks to its new setting, and it actually goes out of its way to give us really cool shots sometimes (see Buck's story). It really sets itself apart from the other movies. Also, how can you beat fucking dinosaurs!? Living under the ice!? Still the coolest shit. AND, the cover of Walk the Dinosaur is STILL the best credits song in the series.
2. Ice Age 2: The Meltdown
This one is simply a treat. It's an amazing follow-up to the first movie - it's got higher stakes, more energy, and more funny moments, and rounds out the herd with Ellie and the possums. Queen Latifah does her job voicing Ellie perfectly, and she's a GREAT character. Beyond that, it absolutely nails the emotional moments, too. Goodnight Sweet Possums is just... it's such a great scene, scored wonderfully. Hell, this is probably the most iconic Ice Age movie. Food Glorious Food? Sid's Sing-A-Long? Hell yeah. And... God, that scene at the end, with all the mammoths? Chills. Chills every time. Even so, I feel like it doesn't quite hit that line of greatness 3 did. I'm blaming Crash and Eddie. I don't really like Crash and Eddie. Also, this a total aside, but the ending sequence with Scrat in heaven haunts me to this day. It's the worst I feel for him. Anyway.
3. Ice Age
I could never hate this movie. It's unique in the series for being the most serious of them all. And, it gave Blue Sky its big break (RIP, hope Disney dies now and forever). Really, its biggest crime is that it's just boring in comparison to the sequels. There are gags and hijinks and the whole dodo sequence, but everyone is way more serious. The plot is way more serious. I mean, the saber-tooth tigers wanted to kill the baby! That's fucked up! And it's different to the monsters in 2 and the dinos in 3 because they were thinking, plotting, all of that jazz. Also, it gives very solid foundations for all of the characters, which I think helps make the next couple of sequels so strong. Overall, not that much to say! It's Ice Age 1. The opening travel music is a total bop, and, of course, everyone knows Send Me On My Way. It's just a solid movie.
4. Ice Age 5: Collision Course
I went into this one expecting it to be absolute dogshit, given it's the last numbered sequel in the series. But it's... actually pretty good? My biggest gripe is that the feathered dinosaur side plot didn't really add anything substantial and could've been done away with. Like 3, it really embraced how ridiculous the plot was and did it pretty well, imo. Buck is back! Peaches' fiancée is GREAT, and bringing back everything to focus heavily on the actual herd and its dynamics was a very smart move. The pop culture references date the movie, though. Also there is a Jessie J sloth. Who is also a GILF. Scrat's plot turns into straight up hody horror at some moments. The song at the end of the movie is pretty good, though. Anyway, sure, it's obviously not the best movie ever, and it's totally ridiculous, but I'm glad I gave it shot.
5. Ice Age 4: Continental Drift
I just... ugh. I'm gonna be honest, when I was younger I watched this one over and over, and I don't know if I made myself sick of it, or if I wisened up when I got older, but this just... sucks. Separating the herd was a horrible choice. The plot on the mainland with Ellie and Peaches is TERRIBLE, which sucks because you go in excited to meet Peaches properly. Sidelining Ellie to begin with was a horrible idea, since we KNOW she's a badass, and having her in on the pirate plot could've ruled. Also, jumping from baby Peaches in 3 to teenage Peaches in 4 was a bad move. I think an adventure with a younger Peaches could've worked better. Generally, separating the mammoth family was really not a good idea.
Well, I can give this movie one thing. It gave us Diego and Sid kissing. And they LIKED IT.
Speaking of mammoths! Every single mammoth celebrity voice actor seemed to be chosen exclusively for the song at the end of the movie. Which would've been fine if the song didn't suck with all of them included, it's like a cacophany of chaos. The version with just Keke Palmer is so much better. That's just me though. Also Josh Gad was a fucking rat and I hated his incel ass, so glad he wasn't in 5. AND, the plotline involving the other mammoths sucked sucked sucked sucked SUUUUCKED. I don't know how exactly we'd do a plotline about Peaches wanting to fit in (then realising she and her wacky family is fine just the way it is), but this was NOT it. This would have been a better story to do after a movie has been made with a younger Peaches, after we become very familiar with her dynamic with everyone in the herd, especially Manny and Ellie. Generally having a movie like that between 3 and 4 would have prevented a lot of the issues - such as separating the mammoth family.
Overall, the pirate plotline should have been the main focus, especially because that way we could have gotten more Peter Dinklage. The pirates were sorely underutilised, which is such a shame, because they were a very interesting addition to the story.
If you'e gotten this far, thanks for reading my ramblings on this series!

You have one F/O Gush ticket! Gush about your main F/O!
OMG THANK YOU, ANON! This is right up my alley! :D
So, as I'm sure most of you know at this point, Scrat's been my all-time favorite character/main F/O since I was 12.
Tumblr media
And he's just. SO fucking cute y'all, I love everything about him. I love his nervous and frantic nature and of course his "nutty" personality. :3 I love how he becomes this blissfully sighing lovestruck dork when it comes to his acorn and of course Scratte.
I love that in spite of his hilarious yet unhealthy nut obsession, he grew to care about two others aside from his acorn in different ways. I'm of course talking about Scratte and Baby Scrat. <3 And that's the other thing, he can be a selfish little shit sometimes but he ain't too bad a father still! And he was a pretty good husband to Scratte for a while before he made that one really big fuckup that I love to make fun of him for along with some other stupid decisions he made. XD
There's just so much charm and personality to his character and I swear that I wouldn't have loved him as much as I do now if he spoke. I mean I'm sure I'd still love him obviously but him being this silent comic relief character and with no dialog from him in any of his scenes just adds so much more charm to him and I'm really glad that they stuck to that by not having Scratte or Baby Scrat talk either! And Chris Wedge does such a fantastic job voicing him and will always be THE one and only Scrat! ^w^
I also love that no matter how many times he failed to get his acorn and how unlucky he was, he never gave up and kept trying with all his might to acquire it. And now, after so many years of failing his goal, he finally eats it and gets the happy ending he deserved all along and I couldn't be happier for him. ;w; He definitely has his flaws when it comes to how he interacts with others when it comes to his acorn, but he's my ultimate meow-meow and his flaws make me love him even more tbh! It's part of his charm and the comedy of his character. UwU
So yeah, there you have it. Sorry it got kinda long but if you ask me about my f/o's, let alone my main one and I'll go off on a tangent for sure! Hope this was a good enough gushing over him. ^w^ Thanks again for the wonderful message, anon! <D

So for some reason my brain really wanted me to rewatch the first three Ice Age movies (I'm not going past 3 because I heard 4 and 5 are pretty much unnecessary + I didn't watch them as a kid so I have no nostalgia bait to yoink me in) and man, I forgot how much Scrat made me laugh as a kid.
I should watch the last short Bluesky did where he finally gets his acorn at one point.

This is pretty much the perfect send-off for Blue Sky, as well as a great resolution for Scrat himself. I like how it's so underplayed, and not some huge moment of triumph to finally eat the darn acorn. Like it's no big deal. He just smiles a bit and hops away. It does draw attention to how it was never explicitly stated that Scrat's been trying to bury it for the winter this whole time. I love the attention to detail with his animal-like body language. The quick peek to see if anyone sees him, the scratching of the ear. I do consider this canon, since Blue Sky animators made it. It's just a shame that Disney hasn't made it more widely available by putting on Disney+ (although I'm not sure where they'd put it). I suspect Disney is a little peeved that they made and released it in such a sneaky, "unofficial" way. (Although I think this might Disney’s official Brazilian channel? I’m not sure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tScdAQsVMpkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tScdAQsVMpk) It makes me wonder if Scrat had finally managed to get far away enough from Baby Scrat (wish he had a better name) to be able to eat it when he wasn't looking. It is implied to take place after Scrat Tales.
Tumblr media
It does beg the question- is this a different acorn here? Well, the continuity of the Ice Age series has always been a little iffy. But it's still bizarre to think that this is Scrat's ultimate fate, to find himself on an island thousands of years later. Hopefully not at the cost of being separated from Baby Scrat. Of course, I'm thinking about this sort of thing too hard as usual.

On the 30th April 2022, Dad and I watched Blue Sky Studios Ice Age.
This year, Ice Age was released 20 years ago back in 2002.
It is followed by:
Ice Age 2 The Meltdown (2006)
Ice Age 3 Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)
Ice Age 4 Continental Drift (2012)
Ice Age 5 Collision Course (2016).
The following weekends, we watched  Ice Age 2 The Meltdown and Ice Age 3 Dawn of the Dinosaurs.

In April 2021, Blue Sky Studios was shut down by its parent company Disney, who acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019.
The reason for the closure was due to the economic impact of the pandemic on the Walt Disney Company.
Blue Sky Studios was founded in 1987.

Scrat tales is the best thing to come out of the ice age franchise since my beloved ice age 3, and the goodbyes animation from BS where Scrat finally gets the acorn just tugs at my heartstrings.
It says something about the direction Ice Age took that six shorts about Scrat and his baby endangering and attempting to steal food from one other has more creativity and heart than the actual movies, but I'm so glad Blue Sky got to go out on a high note.
(Also, I'm really happy Baby Scrat is by all indications a baby squirrel he adopted and not his biological kid. I never dared to hope that he might be.)

I previously briefly talked about Rio's personality. So, continuing from my last post, here's two versions of my character's personality inspirations. The only difference between them being Rio's appearance with and without his crown.
Like King Julien from the "Madagascar" franchise, Rio sings "I Like to Move It Movie It" in both "Rio" movies. If "Rio 3" happens, I'll try to find a way to fit it in, unless it doesn't get featured in the proposed third movie.
Like Emperor Kuzco from "The Emperor's New Groove" franchise, Rio narrates his own stories as a voice-over. But he will occasionally pause the movie sometimes and show up to either explain things in further detail, or just poke fun at some of the characters or even the setups.
Like Deadpool, Rio's fourth wall-breaking is used in-film and during the times when he pauses the movie. He even points out the obvious on how the whole thing is a movie, or even mentioning the audience from time to time. He'll also mention stuff that Fox owns like "X-Men" and "Ice Age". There's even a logo joke I thought of for either "Rio 2" or "Rio 3" where after Scrat falls off the Blue Sky Studios logo, Rio will sit on the "e" in "Blue", which breaks off, due to Rio's weight. Thus, the logo would now read "Blu Sky Studios" before fading to black.
Like Mufasa, I thought my character could have some similar papa wolf kinds of features. Even going as far as banishing Nigel for attempting to murder Blu, which should be punishable for attempting to murder royalty. But he isn't without his loving qualities, as well as the attention he gets from the birds and humans. Not only is he beloved and respected, but he's also a fair monarch who knows what's best for his subjects, including his son, and his family. He will occasionally give good advice if he needs to, like any father or parent would for their son(s)/daughter(s).
I guess he's also got some of that flair that screams "game show host", to some degree. He also acts as if he were an animated movie star, like how in some movies, like "A Bug's Life", "Toy Story 2", "Monsters Inc.", and even "Mr. Peabody and Sherman", they show outtakes during the end credits, which depict some animated characters like they were actors from a live action film (Click here to learn more about where I'm coming from with this). I don't know if I should do fan outtakes for "Rio" and "Rio 2", but I don't think it's a bad idea, if I could find what I think would work best (ex. After Blu's drawing in the dirt, Rio would draw an acorn in the final film. But for the outtakes, he would draw different things like Wonderbot ("Robots") and maybe a sloth that almost looks like Sid ("Ice Age") before drawing an acorn.).

Disney has announced  the release date of the final Blue Sky Studios project before the shutdown, Ice Age: Scrat Tales
This is a series of six all-new animated shorts starring Scrat, the hapless saber-toothed squirrel of the “Ice Age” adventures, who experiences the ups and downs of fatherhood, as he and the adorable, mischievous Baby Scrat, alternately bond with each other and battle for ownership of the highly treasured Acorn.
Featuring the vocal talents of Chris Wedges as Scrat and Kari Wahlgren as Baby Scrat, the series is produced by Anthony Nisi, with Robert L. Baird and Andrew Millstein serving as executive producers.
“Nuts About You”
Directed by Michael Berardini and Donnie Long. Story by Michael Berardini.
In “Nuts About You,” Scrat meets his son Baby Scrat and experiences the pure joy of being a new parent—until Baby Scrat sees The Acorn for the first time.
“LoFi Scrat Beats to Sleep/Chill to”
Directed by Donnie Long and Matt Munn. Story by Donnie Long.
In “LoFi Scrat Beats to Sleep/Chill to,” Scrat pounds out a percussive lullaby to get a crying Baby Scrat to fall asleep.
“X’s and Uh-O’s”
Directed by Donnie Long and Drew Winey. Story by James Young Jackson and Drew Winey.
In “X’s and Uh-O’s,” Scrat demonstrates for Baby Scrat how to plant The Acorn, but Scrat is really the one being taught a lesson.
“Nutty Reflections”
Directed by Donnie Long and Eric Prah. Story by Galen Tan Chu.
In “Nutty Reflections,” Scrat and Baby Scrat run after The Acorn into a dark cave, which resembles a creepy funhouse hall of mirrors.
“Teeter Toddler”
Directed by Jeff Gabor and Donnie Long. Story by Galen Tan Chu.
In “Teeter Toddler,” thanks to a dodo bird, Scrat and Baby Scrat end up on opposite sides of a log held up by a single branch.
“Nut The End”
Directed by Lisa Allen Keane and Donnie Long. Story by Michael Thurmeier.
In “Nut The End,” The Acorn goes flying off a cliff. With it seemingly gone forever, can Scrat and Baby Scrat live in harmony?

Honestly? 2022 was probably one of the most eventful years I've had in a long time. I mean where do I even start? The Cuphead Show got released, the actual Cuphead game finally got its DLC, Scrat Tales came out, Scrat finally ate his acorn, Ash became the Pokemon World Champion and they announced his journey was finally coming to an end, I went on a mini vacation with my family to Great Wolf, I received wonderful/meaningful gifts from Jeff Gabor...
Ice Age's 20th anniversary was this year as well as Ice Age 4's 10th anniversary, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet came out, I finally got a PlayStation 5, I got into Amphibia and witnessed its finale, Kirby and the Forgotten Land came out, Nimona got revived, a few former Blue Skyer's made a new animation studio out of it, I got Farmageddon on Blu-Ray, and probably lots more that I can't think of at the moment.
As I look back on all of it I can't help but think "That was all in the same year?!" tbh. But I'm really glad it all was because like I said, it was very eventful for me as a result and I feel like I hardly ever get very many eventful years these days. As a result I kinda consider it to be a good year as well. Sure it had its negative moments as every year does but yeah, I'm pretty thankful for how 2022 turned out for me.
So here's to hoping that 2023 will be just as good if not better for me and everyone else! And if not too eventful, at least chill cuz the world just always really needs to lol. But anyway, Happy New Year everybody. May 2023 treat you all right. ❤️🎉🎊

Okay so, some ramblings that are ice age related today. For the first time in recent history, I finally got to see somethings that are ice age related that didn’t sucked!
okay so first i wanted to talk about the scrat tales short, my opinion, i thought some parts of it was funny and cute! also the animation is just freaking great to look at! the animation looks so much better than that whole buck wild spin off thingy... also i’m not sure if this baby scrat is actually scrat’s son or just some random squrriel pup he found but dang it, imma say this baby squrriel is his! this baby is honestly adorable in my eyes! and also just want to mention that, I like to think that scrat tales took place after dawn of the dinosaurs mainly cause 1. It would make sense due to the fact it wouldn’t make sense to have this baby be born after colision course, and two, I much rather like to think that the ice age christmas speical, 4, 5 and even buck wild, not being canon to me. (it helps me sleep at night...
also another good thing is that one finally animation blue sky had made where they had finally gave Scrat his nut! seeing him finally eating that acorn just feels me with joy! we can all finally die happy now.. finally inner peace!
but in all, These were all great I’m happy with these, yeah I know that Diseny is gonna make yet another awful Ice age sqeual and its gonna get worse but for now, I’m just happy with the two good recent ice age content I have..

2023
This is my copy of the Ice Age Essential Guide (featuring 1, 2 & 3).
It is a movie guide book written by Glenn Dakin. It was published by Dorling Kindersley (DK books) in 2009 following the release of the third film. The book features 64 pages.
In this post I will talk about the two menacing aquatic dinosaurs from Ice Age 2 The Meltdown, Cretaceous (an Ichthyosaur) and Maelstrom (a Pliosaur).
Cretaceous and Maelstrom are first seen frozen in a block of ice during the waterpark migration scene. These two have spent millions of years trapped in an ice berg since the Mesozoic era, but due to the warming weather they're beginning to thaw out and are very hungry. Along with the vultures they are seeking to eat all the mammals they can during the flood. Stu (a Glyptodon) becomes their first victim.
They work together as a team to bring down their prey. Both reptiles split up to try and hunt the herd in the movie and Scrat in the games. They can also defend each other for example If either Cretaceous or Maelstrom get hurt the other stands in to attack. Cretaceous is shown to have more strength and courage to take on Manny the Mammoth, whilst Maelstrom tries to take on the rest of the herd.
Their fate at the end of the Meltdown involves a fight with Manny who is trying to save Ellie from the cave. As they attempt to attack him, Manny wedges the tree trunk into the rock. He quickly gets out of the way as they bite onto it instead and are then taken down by the rocks as they crumble down saving Ellie in the process. Both reptiles are then sucked into a whirlpool as the ice dam breaks open thanks to Scrat. As a result, these two reptiles end up becoming a snack for the Mini Sloths (in the essential guide) and the Lone Gunslinger Vultures (in the movie storybook).
Cretaceous and Maelstrom also appear in the video game adaption of Ice Age 2 and are featured in Scrats Nutty Adventure (2019) as bosses. 3D rendered models which were used for the Scrat's Nutty Adventure videogame can be found here:

In the videogame of Ice Age 2, Scrat navigates through Maelstrom's digestive system to escape when he is eaten along with his acorn.
Cretaceous and Maelstrom's sound effects were a mixture of whales, tigers growling and human voices, which was used to give an eerie quality. In an early script, both reptiles could talk but this was removed from the movie as the studio didn't want too many characters with speaking roles.
The Art of Ice Age book published by Titan Books and co-written by Tara Bennet, features an early concept of Cretaceous and Maelstrom revealing that they were going to be alongside another character known as a Axolotl. All three characters are called 'The Villainous Trio' in the art book. The 3D sculptures were created by Michael Defeo and character drawings were done by Peter De Sève.
A Axolotl is only featured in the videogame of the second movie. Here is a screenshot featuring an Axloti in the Mud Bog stage alongside Scrat. Image from Sierra Chest.

More recently, Cretaceous and Maelstrom are depicted chasing the herd in cave paintings in the opening sequence of the sixth Ice Age spin-off movie called 'The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild' which was created and released by Walt Disney Studios in January 2022.
Disney's 'The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild' was followed later by 'Ice Age: Scrat Tales', a collection of short films produced by Disney with the help of a small team of Blue Sky Studios animators. Scrat Tales was Blue Sky Studios final farewell production following the studios closure.

KatrinaHood Rewatches Ice Age (2002)
So, I suddenly remembered watching the 2002 animated film, Ice Age. And now, I’m gonna rewatch it to see if it still holds up. Don’t worry, I’m not gonna summarize every single thing that happens in this movie. I’m just gonna make my own little comments on parts I find interesting throughout it and answer the question of if it still holds up at the end. Also, I’m doing this whole rewatch thing and my little commentary all at once because it doesn’t make sense to make one post per comment. Also also, I’m putting this under a read-more to not clog up your dashboard.
· And we start off with that ol’ squirrel doing its thing.
· So far, the animation looks decent.
· Will that dumb squirrel ever learn that sometimes, it’s best to leave that acorn? (Spoiler alert, in the third movie, yes, he does, but that lesson doesn’t stick for very long)
· “How do we know it’s an ice age?” “Because of all the ice!” Someone should introduce these two guys to the definition of a glacial period.
· And that there’s Ray Romano as Manny.
· And John Leguizamo as Sid.
· Awww, Sid’s family abandons him every year. How can someone not feel sorry for someone like him? I guess that’s why the character named Sylvia got cut out from the final cut of the film. His interactions with her would’ve made him seem too much like a jerkass.
· Yes, there was a cut character. If I do a re-read of the novelization of the film (yes, there’s a novelization of the film, yes, I do own a copy, no, you may not ask how or why), I’ll talk about that.
· But not here, since Sylvia doesn’t appear in the film proper.
· Ewwww, Sid stepped in a pile of poopy!
· Nope, nobody’s above finding toilet humor funny, not even me.
· Ewwww, Sid’s smearing the poopy all over the rhinos’ (?) lunch!
· You know, I’m starting to get why many people (as well as the rhinos) don’t like Sid.
· I mean, I wouldn’t be the biggest fan of someone who smeared poop all over my lunch.
· “I thought rhinos were vegetarians.” Important lesson to learn, kids, just because an animal is an herbivore, that doesn’t mean it’s not dangerous.
· Hippos are herbivores, but they are 100% capable of killing animals.
· Elephants are herbivores, but those big-ass tusks are not just for show.
· And the aforementioned rhinos are herbivores, but again, that tusk ain’t just for show.
· I mean, the whole “herbivorous animals can be dangerous too” should be an obvious point, but apparently, the “all herbivorous animals are friendly” misconception is a lot more widespread than I thought.
· Told ya those mammoth tusks weren’t just for show!
· And that there’s Denis Leary as Diego.
· Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, last time I remember watching this, those were just names of guys who voiced characters from this movie.
· Note Manny’s lack of response to Sid asking if he has family.
· The day Scrat the Squirrel’s antics stop being funny is the day…the day…I’ve got nothing.
· “She’s gone.” Damn, this scene still has that emotional punch.
· Hey, Sid’s not just annoying Manny. He’s actually willing to return the baby to his family.
· These three have no idea how to take care of a human baby.
· Exhibit A, them thinking that a human having a dry nose is not normal.
· Exhibit B, Sid’s little prank involving the diaper.
· Exhibit C, Diego scaring the baby in a failed attempt to cheer him up.
· “I’ve heard of these crackpots.” I think that line’s funnier now than when I watched this last.
· And that’s why dodos went extinct, kids!
· The designs of those lady sloths are so cursed.
· “I thought you were gonna eat me.” “I don’t eat junk food.” Ha, this film still has its comedic moments!
· Kinda weird to see these three actually interact with Scrat.
· “It’s easy to get lost in here.” And cue Sid getting lost!
· Awww, babby did a vulcan salute!
· I remember the cave painting scene, and, yup, still as emotional now as it was when I watched it last.
· “We are the weirdest herd I’ve ever seen.” Oh, it’s gonna get weirder later.
· Surprise snowman!
· Diego, no!!
· Eyy, Diego’s still alive!!
· And here we go again with Scrat’s antics!
And now, for the million-dollar question, does the movie Ice Age still hold up? Yes, yes, it does. Even though the animation hasn’t aged well in some parts, the story itself still holds up. It’s still got its comedic moments, and it’s still got heart. So in conclusion, I’m glad I got the chance to rewatch it.
(I might do a rewatch of the sequels eventually, but don’t expect it.)
