Welcome! Here’s how it’s gonna work:
First, we’ll go through each David Bowie studio album from his 1967 debut all the way up to Blackstar (including the Tin Machine albums) and determine which is the best song on each album. Then, we’ll take each of those songs and pit them against each other until we find the ultimate Number One Song. Then we’ll also find the ultimate Number One Song from all his songs on movie soundtracks and otherwise non-album songs and pit all of those against each other until we find the REAL ultimate Number One Song. It’ll be a lot of fun. It’ll also take forever.
Polls start on Friday, September 22nd, and will each last for a week!
All past, present, and future brackets will be shown under the cut!

You've cut out your soul and the face of thought Oh, what have you done? Oh, what have you done?
The "Hello Steve Reich Mix" of Love Is Lost is in my opinion, the superior version of this song, and is accompanied by a fantastic and terrifying video. The remix has several call backs to earlier Bowie tracks, starting with a sound effect remminiscent to the outro of Andy Warhol and including the famous riff from Ashes to Ashes at the end of the first chorus. The video, shot in Bowie's apartment, includes a life size animatronic puppet of The Thin White Duke, a lifeless puppet of Bowie's Pierrot, and a projection of Bowie's face in the style of Tony Oursler.
The Thin White Duke was a product of Bowie's cocaine period and his exploration of extremist views - he played the character as an authoritarian/fascist and whether due to his extensive drug use or getting too carried away in his character - likely a combination of both - he said some very suspect things about fascism in this time. Meanwhile Pierrot was the central character of the Scary Monsters album. Scary Monsters and in particular the song Ashes to Ashes dealt with Bowie's drug use the most bluntly of any in his career, and he also uses the album to directly condem fascism in multiple songs such as It's No Game Part 1 & 2 and Scream Like a Baby.
In the Love is Lost video, not only does the Thin White Duke cradle a motionless, faceless, lifeless Pierrot, he is lurking behind as if creeping up on the real Bowie's projected face, imagery which I take to represent his mind/conscious. The video represents Bowie looking into the darkness and seeing a reality where his Thin White Duke overtook him, where he was not able to rise with Pierrot from his drug addiction and the extreme views he explored in that time. At the end of the video the puppet's wooden hands are holding and silencing projection-Bowie, and when he sings it is now the Thin White Duke's mouth that is moving. There is no real Bowie, only an empty door way.
Bowie said many times throughout the 70s and afterwards that he would struggle to seperate his characters from his own personality to the point he would sometimes feel he was losing himself in them - and it seems the Thin White Duke in particular haunted him even as late as 2013. All of this is why he felt he had to, as shown in the video, literally wash his hands of characters.

If I didn’t know any better, this song feels like its from Heathen album. (add the backing vocals of Gail Ann Dorsey and it will feel like it really is from Heathen.)
