culture tips for writing asian settings: calligraphy (pt i)
i love chinese calligraphy, to me it is just so gorgeous and i've dedicated a few scenes of my own fics to it, so here are just a few quick 'n' dirty calligraphy tips:
Tumblr media
the calligraphy scene in sokka's master (illustrated by korean animators!) is a pretty good depiction tbh. you write using a brush (the brushes can be hung up on a stand too)—it can be jarring to see fics mention quills or parchment. one excellent detail from the show is that sokka, who seems left-handed, has to write with his right hand—the left hand holds the sleeve out of the way. the ink is not liquid/bottled, but is in a solid stick form and has to be ground on an inkstone mixed with water
Tumblr media
traditionally, chinese text is written downwards, and goes from right to left across the page.
as with any other form of calligraphy, chinese calligraphy emphasises beauty of form over legibility—in the same way you wouldn't really consider times new roman font 'calligraphy'. there are different types of script in chinese, and for someone like piandao to master them is a reflection of his education and gentility. the semi-cursive below i see quite commonly in calligraphy:
Tumblr media
then you might have something like the cursive below is quite technical but seriously hard to read
Tumblr media
contrast that with something like this seal script, harking back to an older era of chinese script:
Tumblr media
any calligrapher worth their salt will be putting their stamp on the work, quite literally! name seals, also called "chops", are carved out of stone; ink it up with cinnabar paste and stamp it onto your artwork to get that iconic red signature. (i got one made a couple of years ago and there's a trick to stamping: breathe on the stamp surface after dipping in the paste to warm up the pigment, and when stamping put some circular pressure on the stone to get the print to come out evenly)
Tumblr media
i'm going to do a second part focusing a bit more on scripts from the atla world, so keep your eyes peeled...

My friend is watching ATLA for the first time and was complaining about "Katara's many boyfriends." I had to stop and remind her that not only is Katara 13 and going through puberty and hormones, she's also never interacted with a male her age besides her brother. She never really thought romance could be an option for at least a long time, with how small her village is
Ugh, i genuinely have a deep rooted disgust for people who complain about Katara being a normal teenage girl in this show.
I also really wonder where they get the idea that she has many boyfriends, because the only guy she truly had a romantic connection with besides Aang was Jet. I'm assuming for the other "boyfriends" they mean Haru and Teo, both of whom were literally just friends with her and happened to help her with something. It's also not even about "suddenly romance being an option", it's not like she threw herself at every handsome boy she happened to stumble upon after leaving the south?
Haru and Katara bonded over lost parents and Katara did Haru a great service by inspiring him and his dad to get out of prison, and Katara never did any of that because she had a crush on Haru. She did it because she has an incredibly strong sense of justice and hates standing by when people are suffering and families are torn apart. A crush on Haru was never even implied, except for when Haru told Toph that Katara inspired him and his people to break free, and Katara blushed. But even that, she could just be bashful bc Haru gave her such high praise. With Teo, yea he literally just helped her get on a glider for the first time, i do not see a romantic connection whatsoever. Jet was truly the one guy that Katara fell for, because 1) he's older, 2) he saved her from fire nation soldiers and showed up her older brother, and 3) he's a good manipulator that knew Katara found him attractive and used it to his advantage.
It always seems like Katara specifically is being held to such high standards. She's a skank bc she has too many boys around her, she's annoying bc she brings up her mother a few times, she's bossy bc she tells Aang and Sokka not to do anything dangerous, she's overbearing bc she told Toph to help out while setting up camp.
It's misogyny 101. Sokka is allowed to be loud and obnoxious, Zuko is allowed to act out of anger and grieve his mother, but Katara apparently should just sit down and be quiet. People say all of this when Katara is easily one of the most fleshed out female characters of cartoons in the early 2000's, but because they're not used to women being fleshed out suddenly she's "too much".
Sorry for going on such a tangent but ppl like this truly do piss me off lmao.

I'm gonna say it. It's a bit weird that the ATLA fandom's reaction to the news "Sokka's sexism was toned down for the live action show" was essentially "how DARE! that's my emotional support sexism!"

i feel like the biggest reason that dimartino and konietzko left live action atla production was bc the show runners wanted to make zutara canon

Now that everyone is talking about atla again I wanna say wasn’t a big fan of Anng and katara being a canon ship
I feel like the writers should’ve just added a scene where we see katara just look at aang doing some regular shit and realizing that she likes him but since we don’t get that it feels weird

why tf do we live with people in this fandom, pretending that sokka being sexist and "overcoming it" is sokka's SOLE ARC on the show???

as a natla enjoyer (i have my own critiques im keeping elsewhere but it's basically the same lmao) im enjoying your commentary and salt so fucking much like yes actually…we do deserve better…and imo the actors need chiropractors from doing so much carrying after all this
High five!! No really I am not even mad at the show bc whenever they did something dumb, Aang would smile or say something cute or jump around or do a really good bending move and make me go "OOOH WHAT A SON!! <3<3<3" and I'd stay unbothered and happy

okay at this point we're gonna have to accept that any attempts of a live action ATLA will always be cursed and will never be a good alternative to just watching (pirating cause fuck nickelodeon) the cartoon because what the fuck do you mean they're taking out gigantic chunks of Sokka, Katara and Aang's arcs/development/characteristics, showing the genocide at the Southern Air air temple and more of the Agni Kai between Zuko and Ozai while simultaneously having the gall to say "I mean, the characters, we had to dimensionalize them-"

The Big Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender Producer Interview: 'This Is a Remix, Not a Cover'
Tumblr media
There are certain scenes that you never saw in the original, whether it's the attack on the Southern Air Temple or the Agni Kai between Ozai and Zuko. And those are things that I knew we needed to see in order to make it feel much more grounded as a live-action show. So it was about feeling your way throughout the process. Where can we take the story into the new directions that still feels true to the spirit of the original? And that's what it all comes down to, making sure it feels like it was Avatar in spirit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bending the Rules
And going back to those narrative liberties, was there anything in particular where you were like, “no, this is set in stone. This can’t change”?
AK: There's a lot of things like that, starting with the characters. I mean, the characters, we had to dimensionalize them, but there are certain core ... I would say there's a core DNA to the characters that you don't want to mess with, whether it's Aang, like I said, his childlike goofiness, his sense of humor, the burden of his responsibility, Sokka and his humor and his pragmatic outlook on life, Katara's warmth and her optimism. Those things had to carry through into our version. So you start with the characters, and you say, "What's the essence of the characters that got a big change? And what's the room where we can expand it a little more?" The cartoon, for as great as it was, was 15 years ago. And so, things have changed. There are certain roles I think that Katara did in the cartoon that we didn't necessarily also do here. I mean, I don't want to really get into a lot of that, but some gender issues that didn't quite translate.
My friend just watched it for the first time, and she's like, "Sokka's an asshole." I was like, "Yeah, no, he kind of is."
JR: Yeah, especially in the first season.
AK: Yeah. So we had to guard against that kind of stuff. And so, those are things that aren't really changing a character as so much as updating them a little bit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think one of the big questions is, despite all the remixing, is the point A and the point B still the same as the original?
AK: Pretty much. Yeah, I mean, I think the state of the world and the stakes of the world are still the same. So we decided to make Aang's narrative drive a little clearer. In the first season of the animated series, he's kind of going from place to place looking for adventures. He even says, "First, we've got to go and ride the elephant koi." It's a little looser as befits a cartoon. We needed to make sure that he had that drive from the start. And so, that's a change that we made. We essentially give him this vision of what's going to happen and he says, "I have to get to the Northern Water Tribe to stop this from happening." That gives him much more narrative compulsion going forward, as opposed to, "Let's make a detour and go ride the elephant koi," that type of thing. So that's something, again, that's part of the process of going from a Nickelodeon cartoon to a Netflix serialized drama.
And they say in regards to the original creators leaving: "But sure, having them leave was a blow. And we had to think about whether or not the vision that we had set forward really reflects and honors the spirit of what they had created. And we felt like it did, so we went forward with it. " idk y'all should've taken the hint goddamn ...

Tumblr media
If you could send fans who are anxious about the live-action show any message, what would it be?
JR: I think, as a fan of the show, they're going to get the live-action version of the show they've always hoped they would get.
Albert, anything to add?
AK: This is the version of Avatar that I would want to see as a fan.

Obsessing over the idea of zukka kissing under the mistletoe and upset that I can’t find any fics with it >:
Anyways, thinking about sokka and Zuko visiting their shared friend and parental figure Piandao over the holidays. Little do they know, Piandao has seen these two idiots pine over each other for too long and he’s sick of it, so he strategically plants mistletoes around his estate in the doorways they are most likely to bump into each other under, hoping they’ll finally sort things out during their stay.
(it totally works, but he begins to regret everything after walking in on them making out under said mistletoe on multiple occasions)

This has probably been said before but I really hate/get a laugh out of when people say shit along the lines of:
“Well yeah the Fire Nation was bad and all but they employed female soldiers so at least they weren’t sexist yk 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️”
Like,,,,, my brother in Christ,,,,,
I feel that I don’t even need to explain this but I will.
The Fire Nation from 1-100AG was an imperialist selfish conquest. They committed genocide over one nation, leaving a single survivor. They killed and tortured and traumatised millions of innocent citizens just at the notion that they were ‘spreading their glory’. It was a mass regime that took away culture and community from what was a beautiful and peaceful place to live. The Firelords from Sozin up until Zuko were cruel and autocratic and only wanted what their twisted view of love and fame was from the world. This all continued for one hundred motherfucking years and only came to a stop when the Avatar finally returned, only came to a stop when someone was brave enough, had nothing to lose, was so shamed and guilted by a genocide of their people that wasn’t even his fault. That’s what the Fire Nation was.
So to hear some people say shit like ‘well at least they weren’t sexist’….
Maybe they weren’t. Maybe they did employ female soldiers and treat them like people. But you know who they didn’t treat like people? The rest of the entire fucking world.
They dehumanised the airbenders, made them seem violent and warped their citizens views of them to make sure there was no empathy. They discriminated against the Water Tribes, thought them weak and inferior and didn’t even bother with the South after they’d wiped them out due to their own cockiness. They destroyed and damaged the Earth Kingdom, forever traumatising and devastating so many citizens to the point where some resorted to robbery and murder and crime.
So maybe the Fire Nation itself didn’t treat women unfairly, but they did to the rest of the world. It’s okay to make that as a general statement, but to use that as a justification for everything they did?
Completely fucking insane.
To bring some light to this, one of the responses I could’ve come up with when I saw shit like this was just:
