the Toghrol Tower in Rey, Iran (1063),
A Building to tell the time...
The Toghrol Tower is a 20 meters high tower located in the city of Rey in Iran made of bricks and Sarooj, a water-resistant mortar.
It was erected in 1063, and according to some sources, it was conceived as the tomb of Tuğrul Beg, the founder of the Seljuk dynasty.
Other scholars report that it was used as a lighthouse to guide the travellers of the Silk Road during foggy days and nights.

We Love Oman: Enjoy Nakhal Hot water Springs
Near Nakhal Fort, along a winding road framed by palm trees as far as the eye can see, are the hot springs of Ain Al Thawarah. This spring is used as a trusted water source and there is even a small pool to enjoy the therapeutic properties of mineral water.
Beyond the date plantations that surround Nakhal Fort, this hot spring emerges from the walls of the wadi and is channeled into a falaj (irrigation channel) for irrigation of the surrounding plantations. It is a series of hot springs that spring from Mount Silud all year round and flow through the valley for a distance of 300 meters before branching into two tributaries: Falaj Kabbah and Falaj Al Sarooj. Wilayat Nakhal depends on this source and its tributaries to irrigate its cultivated land. Spring is one of the most popular tourist spots in Al Batinah South Governorate.
Hot springs have been prized throughout the ages for their ability to provide relaxation and relieve pain, and if you are looking for these types of amazing therapeutic treatments in Oman, Nakhal is the place to go. Located about 90 km from Muscat, Nakhal hot springs have grown in popularity among the people of Oman and are surrounded by some of the best scenery in the country. visit more information at https://mountainvalleyholidays.com/

Yakhchāls, ancient evaporation coolers, came into being around 400 BC. The giant conical structures allowed ice to be made and collected during the colder months and used throughout the year for things like preserving food and making faloodeh, a traditional Persian frozen dessert made with thin noodles and semi-frozen syrup.
Different design features kept different yakhchāls cool, from spiral structures to wind towers and vents. Some yakhchāls had holes near the bottom, to keep cool air flowing into the vast underground portion of the structure where the ice was made and kept, and holes near the top through which hot air would be funneled out.
Walls were often built to keep the water shaded as it was channeled in to the yakhchāls so it would freeze faster. Yakhchāls also served as places to store ice that was brought down from nearby mountains and often food as well. The extremely thick waterproof and heat resistant walls were made of a special mixture of sand, clay, egg whites, lime, goat hair, and ash called sarooj.
Many of these monuments to ancient Persian ingenuity are still around today, hundreds of years later. One of the easiest to find is the one near the Narin Castle in Meybod, Iran, but there are also some in Iranian cities like Yazd and Kerman.
I live in the HOT desert near Death Valley.  I was wondering, if anyone or group has used the idea of Yakhchals (which I have not known about, till now), to keep water cold, or tried to freeze, currently. What a great energy-saving idea Yakhchals are!
The engineering is not clearly explained, especially the part about “evaporative cooling”. It seems more likely that the owner applied straw on the sunny side to protect against solar heating, and cooling was by radiation into the north sky at night. The rest of the structure was merely well insulated. A fairly cool ground temperature was also part of the deal, as the water system was rather elaborate in those areas. If you want to experiment you could try Styrofoam insulation with foil on the sunny side. Any lumber yard carries that material.

Teacher run over on first day of school in UAE
Tumblr media
A teacher suffered from injuries after she was hit by a car as she crossed the road in Al Ain on the first day of the new academic year. The incident occurred in Al Sarooj area on Sunday afternoon as the teacher had just moved out of a public bus. She then crossed the road as she headed to the parking lot where she had left her car. The parking yard is on the other side of the road As she crossed from the zebra crossing, a car suddenly knocked her down. Other vehicles in the first and second lanes had reportedly stopped at the pedestrian crossing spot after seeing the woman. But the driver who was in the third lane didn't bother to stop his car, according to an eyewitness. The teacher sustained injuries in different parts of her body. Police and an ambulance rushed to the scene after being notified about the incident. The woman was taken to Al Ain Hospital where she is receiving treatment. Police blamed the crash on the driver, who didn't stop at the pedestrian crossing. He will be charged for causing the accident and for violating traffic rules. Police has urged motorists to respect the rules of the road and stop at zebra crossings for pedestrians. Pedestrians have also been told to always cross roads from designated areas such as foot bridges and pedestrian crossings to avoid accidents. Not giving way to pedestrians carries a Dh500 fine and six black points. Those caught stopping on crossings and obstructing pedestrian movement face a Dh400 fine and three black points. The penalty for pedestrians crossing roads at undesignated spots is Dh400. Read the full article
